Tips for Choosing Minnesota Senior Living: Ask Questions
Be prepared with questions about the facility when you schedule a tour. Talk to several staff members, how long have they been there? If none of the employees have been there longer than a year or two, there’s probably a high rate of turnover. Good employees don’t stick around, and bad employees provide bad care.
Ranking The Best Senior Living Facilities in Minnesota
Ranking senior living facilities is not easy. There are multiple variables to consider, and then you have to weigh their importance. We combed the Internet in search of reviews from Google and Facebook, then combined them with reviews from our own users. While reviews are extremely helpful, they rarely tell the whole story. We also researched complaints and violations from the MN Department of Health, Office of Health Facility Complaints.
Money is always a concern, but the good news in Minnesota is the average cost is $2,948 per month. This is lower than most states for assisted living. Minnesotans can expect to pay less for senior apartments and independent living that provide amenities, but no care. Memory care, nursing homes and other facilities with skilled nursing can be thousands more a month.

Simply the best! We moved my mom into the Homestead assisted living 3 years ago. She was living all alone in a great big house and was completely isolated. When she first moved in she compared it to summer camp. She was always doing something and we never heard from her because she was so busy. Now she is getting older and her dementia is progressing and I am thankful to Angie and the rest of the assisted living staff for keeping me updated on how she is doing. I love the fact that she can truly age in place at the Homestead. With her dementia, it is good to know that she can go to the assisted living memory care or the skilled memory care based on her care need. This puts our mind at ease. I cannot recommend the Homestead enough!

I have family here! When we were looking at assisted living, The Rivers was immediately my top choice. It took a little convincing, but after several months in residence my relative has admitted that this was an excellent move. The staff is kind and engaging, the food is fresh and varied, and the chefs actually ask what residents like. This place is SAFE, clean, and well appointed. The grounds are beautiful with several walking routes and well-tended gardens. There are seating areas and reading nooks everywhere with full book shelves. Every public space welcomes activity and engagement. My teenage son came with me to visit one day, and as we were leaving commented that he wasn’t used to people smiling! Even with masks, you see a smile from staff members and residents. I think that says a lot.
