While this facility was a good fit for my loved one initially, we ultimately made another choice. Some of the staff was more attentive than others; Nichole, Vanessa, and Jessica were great! My loved one felt comfortable here especially when her hospice moved with her from home and it was better than home alone while we had a couple of out of state trips to make. I also live out of state and visited my loved one about every 7-14 days. However, as dementia progresses an assisted living facility is not safe unless they are in memory care unit; this facility does not have one. There's no RN on staff or on call so assessment was totally dependent on our hospice RN twice a week. Our hospice recommended a camera in her room and I'm thankful I did get one. I'm an RN as well so I spent most of my days watching the camera and calling the staff as necessary. I could see my loved one was not able to advocate for herself and they wanted her to be able to do more. While staff tried to be encouraging for her to be as mobile as possible, they are not geared for someone who is or becomes bedbound. They tried to feed her when she was asleep, fed her solid food when she progressively needed soft food. As she declined, it was unclear who would give her morphine as needed or assess when it was needed. I definitely did not feel comfortable with an "elder caregiver" making that determination or administering that medication. One of the aides continued to unplug the camera when she came in. To the credit of the care coordinator/LPN, she provided care instead when I demanded the aide not ever give care again for the last couple days my loved one was in this facility. As far as I know the employee was not terminated. Basically, if your loved one cannot or becomes not able to advocate appropriately (end of life, diminished consciousness, etc) for herself assisted living is not a good option. Specifically, this facility may be ok for individuals still able to walk around. Also, not sure how well they are trained on CPR, DNR or how well they follow what's listed for each resident. One resident died while I was visiting my loved one and it was a chaotic scene.

Mom and dad have been up here since about 5 - 6 months. They love it or more exact, they love the ladies that work here. Sometimes dad or mom will say that they wish they could be home again but dad will follow that up with: I know we cant take care of ourselves anymore but these nurses here take real good care of us up here...we love them and because of that we love them too. Also, if something is not right with either of them or their medicine they are quick to call us to tell us of their concerns. Honestly, they are really like part of our family. We made the right choice by choosing Pleasant Valley. They are fantastic!!!
