The intent of this post is to provide an honest review (pros and cons) of the Artis Senior Living in Chestnut Ridge, NY, and is based entirely on my experience, observations, and personal opinions during the time I cared for my beloved Dad, who resided at this facility from October 2022 through May 17, 2024. My sincere hope is that Artis ownership/management will heed this review and take it constructively. Pros: The Facility has a good floor plan. Residents can go to various rooms/spaces and not feel boxed in or constrained. There is a nice walking path outside and decent lighting throughout. The people that work at the front desk are very helpful and nice, including Kam, Annette and the relatively new Executive Director, Jessica. The Chef, Jorge, as well as the Maintenance Director, Orlando, were also very nice and professional. The Community Center is excellent; Sheree does a great job of keeping the residents engaged, often having fun activities planned for them. She cares about the residents and has a good heart. Serena, who no longer works there, was a true blessing. The food was decent and serviceable. In general, some dishes could use better quality ingredients (note: I was there mostly at dinner) in my opinion. I am not sure if ownership is charging enough money to residents to increase the food budget (lol- yea right!) This is in no way a reflection on the Chef, who is very talented, and I think did the best he could. Cons: Caretakers (a.k.a., Aides): Several of the Caretakers (Melinda being an exception), in my view, who worked there at the time of my father's stay, (especially the ones assigned to my father's wing) displayed really poor attitudes and were very moody; they were not always willing to assist me with my Dad. If they did, they seemed to show resentment and acted like they were doing me a favor. Although financial tips are not endorsed by Artis and are against company policy, I would often do so as much as I could, in an effort to get some of them to assist me consistently and in a friendly manner. Most of them happily accepted the money; coincidently, when I stopped tipping (after my Dad's monthly fee was proposed to increase from $10,000 to $12,000 a month after only 12 months there), the Caretakers were not as willing to help me, and complained to a former Director of Health Services that I was making too many requests. Nursing In my experience, and over the 19 months of my Dad's stay, there was inconsistent Nursing Staff and high turnover. The facility often had to rely on a third-party agency to help fill shifts. One of the Nurses employed by Artis (Dawn) is very nice; a few of the Agency Nurses (such as Stepanie, Kim and Vannessa) were wonderful and caring. Although I strongly feel every wing at Artis should ALWAYS have a Nurse stationed there, this was not the case in the evening. During several episodes with my father, there was NOT a Nurse in my father's wing, so I would have to leave him to go look for one. This would put him at risk for falling, which did happen once. On some occasions, the Nursing department was out of stock with essentials such as bandaids; I would consequently have to bring in my own supplies to treat my Dad's many skin tears. In all fairness, this occurred more during the beginning of my Dad's stay in 2022. Laundy: Many times, my dad's laundry was lost or not cleaned properly. I would often notice that several garments were folded and put away but still had body excrement odor (e.g. urine) on them. I got so frustrated, I ended up taking his laundry home several times each week to clean it myself. (I complained but they were never able to correct this). Heating/Cooling The temperature in my Dad's room sometimes was so unbearably hot (esp. in winter months), that I would have to crack a window open overnight to make it bearable. Automated External Defibrillator (AED) I was not able to locate an AED hanging anywhere in the Facility, which I find completely unacceptable. There should be one AED in every wing.

After volunteering in Artis Senior Living I have only wonderful things to say! Every staff member is absolutely dedicated 100 percent to the residents. Their attention to detail is amazing and they make sure that the day is filled with enjoyable and beneficial programs to enhance the quality of life of all those that are there. From PT to art or gardening, music or dance they really truly care about everyone. Anyone who sends their loved ones to Artis can rest assured that they are being well taken care of in a place that is not only safe but where they can thrive!

Artis has welcomed our father with warmth , tolerance and a genuine interest in who is is as an individual. The director, Laureen is a strong advocate for the members and this leadership quality is carried by the staff. Our father is loved for who he is rather than being defined by the difficulties he has with dementia. We love the care staff and the program staff Sheree and Serena. The doctors are very knowledgeable and know how to manage dementias and relates challenges. To top it off, the food there is amazing.!!! Hats off to chef Jorje. ! We are SO grateful for all of you ARTIS team. Thank you !!! N

What can I say about Artis Senior Living in Chestnut Ridge? My mom has been lucky enough to be cared for there for over a year. She's as happy as a clam, telling me every day how happy she is, how nice everyone is, and so happy that I found it for her. The staff is great, the activities are enriching and I couldn't recommend it any more strongly. If you need a caring assisted living and memory care facility, thus is the place. Cheers to the Artis Way!

On Dec 11th Veterans from Rockland County Homes for Heroes and the Joseph P. Dwyer Veteran Peer Support Program attended a special "Thank You" luncheon hosted by the Artis Senior Living Center in Chestnut Ridge, NY. The lunch provided the Veterans the opportunity to relax, socialize, eat and enjoy the comradery associated with military service. It is so important, epically during the holiday season, for Veterans to get together and reconfirm their commitment to not only to each other, but to the Veteran community at large. A special Thank you to Artis for providing not only the Venue but the meal and hospitality. It is through these social engagements that we strengthen the bonds between the Veterans and the community in which they live. We are truly blessed to live in a community that nurtures its Veterans and helps to ensure their well-being.

If you ever watched the sitcom "Cheers" then you are familiar with their theme song "Where Everybody Knows Your Name" This truly represents Artis Senior Living Memory Care of Chestnut Ridge staff including Culinary services, Environmental services, Life Enrichment staff, Health & Wellness Nurses, P.T. & O.T. professionals, Culinary services, Case Management, Business services, greeters, Executive Director and all the dedicated positive partners. They all go above & beyond to bring comfort and joy to my husband and family. Most importantly they give us peace of mind to know my husband is active, safe and happy everyday! Yes, this is where everyone knows your name. Thank you so much. “ Kudos to Melinda who was one of the first of many caregivers that he met his first day. She even got him to dance which he hadn't tried in many years. Everytime I see him he reassures me this is a nice place. It takes a caring team to get such high praise from him.

As a resident in Canada, I have heard of Artis Senior Living, specifically the Chestnut Ridge location. The employees there actively work at making the residents feel happy and comfortable from all levels of staff. The receptionist, Kam is always smiling and friendly and willing to assist the residents as required. If i lived in the area it would consider taking my loved one to this facility.

Laureen and Stephanie assisted me with all questions I had and did a very good job making sure I was well informed of everything I needed to know. I was very impressed by how personalized the care is at Artis. The staff really makes an effort to learn about the past and present lives of the residents in their memory care unit to make the residents as comfortable as possible. The facility and the grounds are also beautiful and the residents can can safely enjoy both of them.

The specialized therapeutic programs and approaches including Music Therapy, as I can speak with experience, really seem to engage the individuals participating in a socially interactive way with the Music that they love.

When you have to make the decision to move your loved one out of the their home, it is a difficult decision. It’s even more difficult when they suffer with memory loss. I did significant research and visited many places. Lisa and Laureen at Artis were beyond welcoming and made us feel like family from the moment we walked in. The entire staff was loving and compassionate. There is no place else I would have ever send my mom. They are truly special people and are making a difference in peoples lives everyday. I am so grateful to have crossed paths with them. Artis is a wonderful place.

She settled in nicely, participates in all activities and is forming new relationships. She thinks of Physical Therapy as just fun games they play and enjoys how often they integrate live music into the weekly routine. At home she was sitting in front of the TV, barely moving and missing my dad, at Artis she's involved in everything, zipping up & down the halls with her walker and forming relationships with staff and other residents. She even enjoys the meals and desserts. She very quickly thrived at Artis and it far exceeded our expectations. Their philosophy of 'meeting the resident where they live' emotionally, makes a world of difference. More importantly it's enabled her children to once again enjoy visiting her and really enjoying her company instead of struggling to also be her hands-on caregiver. - I can't tell you what a gift that has been. We are so happy that we chose Artis.
