Bickford of Shelby Township is an absolutely wonderful senior living community. The Executive Director Gretchin is amazing, leading the team with genuine compassion, dedication, and heart. And Olivia, the Activity Director, is outstanding at bringing so much joy and creative energy to the residents every day. Title: Disappointing and Unprofessional Billing Practices After a Loss I am deeply concerned and frustrated with the financial department at Bickford. My family member, who was in their memory care unit, passed away on December 1st. Despite her passing on the first day of the month, Bickford charged us for the entire month of December”a very significant sum of money. It has now been three months, and I am still fighting to get a refund. I have made repeated calls to their corporate office, yet no one can provide a clear answer or a timeline for when the check will be sent. While "Beth" in accounts receivable has been my point of contact and claims to send "urgent" messages to the payables department, there has been zero follow-through or resolution. To be ignored during a time of grieving is incredibly disturbing. It feels less like a clerical delay and more like a lack of integrity. I would caution anyone considering this facility to be wary of their corporate billing practices and their lack of empathy or urgency regarding overcharges. I want to begin by saying that the on-site staff at Bickford of Shelby provided amazing care. They were professional, kind, and supportive throughout my family member’s time in memory care. It is heartbreaking that such wonderful care is being overshadowed by a complete lack of integrity at the corporate level.

This is Janet DeMerchant posting. My partner has been here for almost five months as a level 5, and I spend 4-6 hours with him daily. Like most, if not all, assisted living residences, there are pros and cons. My partner has never been interested in socializing with large groups of people, so he has only attended a few activities. When encouraged, he goes to meals, and prefers to remain in the dining room drinking coffee when finished eating. He sometimes enjoys the meals, but doesn’t usually want three meals a day. He’s often hungry in the evening, and we have something to eat. Making sure that his bedding is changed and laundered when necessary is hit or miss. I prefer to launder his clothing myself, as I know how frequently congregate laundry doesn’t get back to its proper owner. Showering and other grooming isn’t always done when scheduled, and part of that is due to his refusing it. Meds are almost always given when scheduled. The fact that he doesn’t want to be involved in activities, coupled with the move to an unfamiliar setting has led to a cognitive decline since he was moved here. Until moving here he was active and always had projects to work on. Overall the staff has exhibited patience and understanding in dealing with unpredictable and sometimes uncooperative behavior.

Bickford is always finding meaningful ways to bring residents together. A recent event was a perfect example. The residents at Bickford of Shelby made homemade dog treats for local shelter dogs. A fun and engaging activity that not only built community, it kept hands and brains active while creating something that will brighten the lives of animals in need. It’s wonderful to see such purposeful and heartfelt activities happening right here at Bickford.

Avoid at all costs. Families have to relocate residents to other facilities due to lack of basic care standards, lack of training, staff shortages, lack of proper medication management, etc. Upper management is aware of the issues and do nothing to resolve problems.

I had my Dad there for a year for assisted living. Bickford is a small place which enables a very intimate setting. Everyone knows each other. Bickford staff was wonderful. Everybody knew each other on a first name basis. It felt like family. He was very happy there. And I felt secure knowing he was well taken care of when I would leave town for awhile. I highly recommend Bickford for peace of mind for the family and a great place for your loved one.

My father in law was very lucky to have lived here. He enjoyed all the meals, events and the outings. All the employees were outstanding. My husband and I knew he was well taken care of so we didn’t have to worry about him.

My mom has been at Bickford Senior Assisted Living in Shelby Twp for almost two years. She has dementia and has been able to manage with assistance. At ninety she still enjoys participating in many of the activities available. The activities director makes every day a special day. She knows how to get residents involved. Today they had a Baked off event. Staff and resident families brought in a variety of desserts. Six residents rated each dessert. They scored each dessert. The other residents and families also ate samples too. It was fun watching the activity director ask residents why they liked or disliked a dessert. Everyone had a good time. Thank you staff for making my mom and all residents feel like family.

My father lived there for a year up until he passed away and I can say I was so impressed with the compassion and the level of care he received from the whole entire staff! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a assisted living!

Beautiful building but the employees should really be given a inservice on HIPPA. I am in the medical field so imagine my shock one morning while I was visiting I could hear a enployee named Rose bad mouthing the very place where she works. She spoke about the repeated plumbing issues and how the employees has to wear boots to work. She was making fun of residents right out in the open. This is sad because it makes me wonder what she does in private. Word of mouth is very powerful so thanks to Rose H. When ever I hear your name I will think of her and the awful statements that she has made....So sad if she is not happy working there maybe you should relieve her of her duties.

Amazing place where loved ones are treated like family and all the residents have smiles on their faces. The extra things they do to bring joy to the residents are amazing. One resident has a cat and they went out and got cat toys, one resident loves music and they bought a CD player and big band music for his apartment and another resident knits all the time but can't now and they bought a beautiful lap blanket knitted to perfection. Excellent place to be!!!!!!!!!!!!
