My mother received very poor care there. Was there for speech and physical therapy. She didn't receive speech until day 12 the day before she was discharged. Came with UTI. I asked repeatedly the nurses to take another test because still had symptoms a week later. It was not done so she had to go to primary dr the day after discharge to get test. It was overall a really bad experience.

The facility is lovely, unfortunately the admissions directors are very unprofessional. My loved one was evaluated by their nurse and approved for assisted living. During the evaluation process I let the nurse know about a single incident that occurred. She didn’t seem to think it was a big deal as she approved my loved one for assisted living. I had a conflict with the director of my parent’s previous home and apparently when the admissions directors spoke to the young and vindictive director at the previous facility, they decided not to allow my loved one to move into assisted living. They said we had to go through another evaluation and have yet to contact me regarding a second evaluation. This looks like the brush off to me and the directors NEVER EVEN MET MY PARENT!! How very unprofessional of them both. They are also slow to respond to voice mails. So my loved one loses out on an opportunity / chance to live in their facility due to two very unprofessional and malinformed women who didn’t even take the time to meet my loved one.

As a patient still here and not a medical professional I can only give you my opinion based on experience since I've been here with a broken hip. Nothing but the best of services from house keeping to the doctors but I'll say a special thank you to all the physical and occupational therapists while I'm sure to them they're just doing there job to .e and this includes all the staff THEY CARE ABOUT THE PATIENTS and that attitude has made a huge difference THANK YOU FOR CARING

The best nursing home in Tucson, probably Arizona.

When you're talking about Handmaker you must decipher between patients with money and patients with very little. The memory Ward drugged my friend so much she was hallucinating. She sat in her own feces so much she had to be rushed to hospital with infection. She is now being evicted. After years of being drugged and no phycsicsl therapy she can't go anywhere because she can't all

In having been transferred to Handmaker from OV Hospital, I got fabulous therapy (the occupational variety) from day one. Plus, in having spent 10 days there, the food was terrific. Unfortunately, it went downhill from there. First, I was rudely awakened during the night just after falling asleep for no apparent reason; not even to take my blood pressure which was wildly fluctuating initially. Then, my 1st nurse told me that my suite-mate would not be using our shared bathroom as his condition did not permit that. Well, after about 8 of my 10-day stay, that promise was negated and the sharing began. I was not used to being lied to and made my displeasure perfectly clear, thus forcing me to remove my personal "stuff" from the bathroom. Lastly, I checked out 2 days before they wanted me to, as I just wanted to go home as I felt that nothing new could be accomplished at that point. My release was smooth and I was happy to be comfortable again. The only thing is that upon going thru the medications that they gave me, one of them was not mine but my suite-mate's med! So, I was compelled to call my social worker and report that this med was not mine and that they need to get this med from their pharmacy asap to administer to him. The social worker was frankly astounded and ran down to my area in order to rectify this obvious mistake. I had hoped to relay a more positive tale but not this time!

If you're looking for a place for someone you love, pick Handmaker. It's clean and has great services and nice rooms, but what really matters is the care they give. My grandpa, a tough former police chief, was not easy to handle. At first, we had a problem with one nurse. The reason doesn't matter; he was let go shortly after. The receptionist was always kind. The director was amazing. She truly listened to your wants needs and went over any questions. But what really stood out was one amazing nurse. She connected with my grandpa in a way that no one else did. She made him laugh, talked about his memories, and brought joy to his last days. She was kind, genuine, and treated him like family. She supported me through the hardest times and made sure I understood everything without pushing me. Thanks to her, my grandpa was the happiest I'd seen him in a long time. He loved going outside, and she made that happen even when others didn't. She made his final hours peaceful and full of love. I can't thank Handmaker enough for the care and love they showed my grandpa. I think of that nurse often, and I'm forever grateful for what she did for us. Thank you Mo, for absolutely everything.

Handmaker has provided my Mother with the best service possible. Every body here from the chef, the administrative assistant, and especially de the nurses have been very helpful. I think Handmaker is the best place for the elderly. Thanks to everybody at Handmaker!
March 2024
This is an extraordinary place… the leadership and the staff care about the residents and they really try to create a special environment.
February 2024
I was impressed with how clean and nice this facility is when I visited a friend who is recovering there. Having been a nurse for many years and working in similar facilities, even the fanciest ones are usually only pretty in the front…and all the same in the back…no odors, no old carpet, no abandoned patients left to sit in their wheelchairs. A different level of care from what I saw/ the wings I was in at least. The food also looked much better than ANY I've ever seen in a Nursing Care & Rehab facility.
February 2024
Patient in January 2024. Excellent experience. Staff very confident and caring. Private room with shared bath. Food service very good. Facility spotlessly clean. PT excellent with experienced providers. Highly recommend Handmake.
October 2023
I had rehab care after surgery twice. My first experience was good. The second was awful. I was placed in a shared room - with a patient who should not have had a roommate - without even a chair for a visitor. There was no comfortable place to sit in the unit to read or relax. I was mobile and miserable.
August 2023
My experience with Handmaker is very limited and brief. I do have a loved one who recently moved in and is happy living there. If you are looking around, I'd encourage you to include Handmaker in your search.

Amazing activities - especially the memory care programming and Adventure Bus, very caring staff
March 2023
I want to praise and recommend the activities provided by the Adventure Bus, (one of the programs sponsored by Handmaker Jewish Services.) We were told about this program soon after my husband was diagnosed with the early stages of Alzheimer's disease. Angela Salmon does an amazing job providing a wide variety of stimulating discussions and hands on activities. My husband enjoys socializing and comes home happy from the fun day. It is comforting to know he is being taken care of and it gives us both a break from the regular routine. I have shared with many of my friends about this program. Thanks Adventure Bus!
March 2023
This home is truly an oasis in the desert. What a wonderful warm and loving home that knows how to treat their residents in the right way. From A to Z they take care of their residents with the utmost care and dedication. Staff is wonderful there and you are always greeted with a warmth that is unmatched anywhere else. Very grateful to the wonderful people determined to truly be a gem in Tuscon for skilled nursing services.
December 2022
The staff treat you and others with utmost courtesy. They are concerned about how to help you and get you back on your feet. Food is good and plentiful. But the caring of the staff is amazing.
December 2022
It's taken me over a year to write this, but I'm finally ready. The end-of-life care that my father received at Handmaker is the kind of care I wished he had received through his final stages of Early Onset Alzheimer's instead of his final 2 weeks on earth. I was (and still am) scarred by the facility he was at prior to Handmaker, which ultimately caused his accelerated demise. My sisters and I could not have asked for better care from Handmaker. We were not easy to deal with as we were there all hours of the day and night. They were completely understanding, loving and accommodating. My father fought for 11 days while Hospice advised that he had merely minutes to hours to live. Handmaker accepted that we were not leaving his side. Everyone from the nurses, front desk staff, management, kitchen staff, cleaning staff, etc. went above and beyond for us but more importantly, for my dad. A true level of care that I had lost hope in. To the staff of Handmaker- thank you for your kindness, level of care, and the love that you showed to my father and my family. You were a blessing to us and I'm forever grateful.
November 2022
My mother has been at Handmaker for awhile now and our family is pleased with the care she is given . They do their best to accommodate the residents. I highly recommend Handmaker for your loved ones care in every level possible.
October 2022
My 91-year-old mother was just admitted here this week after falling. She has been treated very well and says she really likes the PT staff. We are very grateful to Handmaker for helping her during this rehabilitation period. We are very impressed!
September 2022
My mother was admitted Handmaker and she is having a great experience. The PTs and OTs are top notch and she's not complaining about the food.
August 2022
My mom attended the Adventure Bus program a few years ago before she passed away at age 98 from Dementia. She looked forward to being with her friends every day. It gave her a reason to get up early and made her truly happy. The Handmaker manager, Angela, was truly magnificent. The program also gave me a chance to get some things done without worrying about mom's well-being, which was extremely important. I would highly recommend the Adventure Bus to anyone in similar circumstances.
July 2022
Handmaker is a beautiful & welcoming place! The staff are warm, friendly, and compassionate. It can be hard to find a good place that cares for its residents and I am thankful that Handmaker & the staff provide a high level of care.
April 2022
The best nursing home in town! My mom gets the best care and everyone coordinates with each other to make sure the great care continues. Is it perfect; no, but it's not from lack of trying.
March 2022
My father is still pretty independent but he chooses to participate in lots of activities which keep him active and engaged with other residents. Our experience has been appreciating Handmaker staff for their kindness towards our father and also their interest in his continued success as a happy, healthy and thriving resident. We are pleased to recommend Handmaker.
March 2022
The first day that I was sent to Handmaker for more services for my Depression and using my bad knee, I heard the Nursing staff say that I should not be here because I wasn't going to be able to pay my bill. From there on it was all down hill for me. I don't know how many staff members I went through to try to get a phone number of my Doctor, they would say that is no problem and never get back to me. For the first time that in this facility, I don't want to come here again!!.
February 2022
My mother Sophia has been living in the assisted living at Handmaker for over 3 years and could not be happier. Before that she was a member of Handmakers "Adventure Bus" program for non-residents. I have always had positive encounters with all the staff and have no doubts that my mom is being cared for with competence and genuine concern by the staff. The administrative team is always available for answers to questions as well. The pandemic has caused all of us with family there to become frustrated and I understand (and agree) that to act on the side of of caution is both desirable and required by law.
February 2022
My mother in law has been at Handmaker for the the last 3 years, my mother's just finished rehab and moved to assisted living, I'm a 25 year retired SNF nurse. Yes, surprise surprise, Handmaker is not perfect. But every employee has ALWAYS been kind, caring and compassionate while struggling with a broken medical system that does not adequetly reimburse these facilities. Both my mothers are doing INFINITELY better at Handmaker than they did at home alone. There will always be bumps in the road, but having reasonable expectations help things go more smoothly. Thank you to ALL the people at HJSA who have done so much for my family
February 2022
Handmaker offers a wide variety of programs and activities to residents.
January 2022
My mother was in rehab at Handmaker and was too frail to return home. The Handmaker staff (marketing and social workers) worked closely with me to understand her options and to help me select the best option for her. She was placed in the Tynan neighborhood for the medically frail, and has been there 8 months. I live out of town and receive frequent updates from the staff. The unit nurse is amazing, caring and knowledgeable. She made sure mom was as comfortable as possible, and recommended changes in medications to minimize side effects. I am so grateful to have them caring for my mom - I sleep well at night knowing she is in great hands.
January 2022
I was there for 21 days after being in the hospital. I was very pleased with the services I received and the whole staff was wonderful including the nighttime shift. I chose Handmaker because I had family that had lived there before and they also received wonderful care. I was primarily at Handmaker for the physical therapy and the p/t staff was outstanding.
January 2022
My experience with Handmaker was poor and I cannot recommend Handmaker for their rehabilitation nursing services. We encountered a number of people at Handmaker who were working hard and trying to be helpful. I want to acknowledge that. However, the management of the facility was unacceptably poor and resulted in the rapid deterioration of my mother's health. My mother was at Handmaker for about two weeks after a week hospital stay for a compression fracture in her lower vertebrae. She was at Handmaker to recover and get rehab services so she would move to an assisted living facility for longer recovery period before returning home. We experienced several significant problems. She seemed to receive minimal rehab services during her and she rapidly lost capability. It was hard to get information on what rehab was being done. They didn't seem to have good recordkeeping. She also developed a urinary tract infection which they did not diagnose. This caused serious hallucinations which is common in older women with UTIs. We had to diagnose the situation remotely and direct them to test her. They did that and treated her but missed a recurrance when she went off of the antibiotics. Again. we had to insist on another test and then treatment. They are the medical experts but missed this major problem and we had to figure it out on our own. The discharge process was simply terrible. The communication was confused and often wrong. Twice we arranged for transportation to take my mother from Handmaker to assisted living. Twice we were told at the last minute that she would not be discharged. When finally she was discharged, all the medical orders necessary for discharge were not completed. Her discharge was clearly unsafe since she needed oxygen, but they had not prepared an order for oxygen. There were also problems with the order for a wheelchair. It was only through the extraordinary efforts of the assisted living facility (Amber Lights) that we got her moved. It took several days of repeated escalation on our part and by the assisted living facility to get everything resolved. It was often impossible to get in touch with management and to get them to address the problems. From my perspective this is all clearly a management problem. The facility seemed significantly understaffed and management was consistently unresponsive. I would avoid Handmaker until they have had a management change.
December 2021
My mother has been at Handmaker for a few years now so I have had numerous opportunities to observe the facility and the staff. I couldn't be happier. Truly caring people ready with genuine smiles and sincere interest in my mother's well-being. We didn't just find a "good place" for her, we found the most WONDERFUL place. She loves it and so do we.
August 2021
Skilled nursing community visiting relative.
March 2021
I would not recommend this Rehab center to anyone, due to the shortage of nursing staff. There was a lack of tender loving care that was needed, and medications distributed in a timely fashion ”
November 2020
July 2020
My mom was on memory care unit for about a year before she passed away, I knew she was safe and well taken care of. Every time I went to visit her before work I just loved how nice the morning staff was, and how they always made sure my mother was dressed nice and always had her hair fixed nice. The employees, nurse, and even servers (Kari, Selvia, Raymond, Dakota, Stacey, Merana, Tracy). Care and love the residents even my mother. I would recommend handmaker if you are looking for a place for youre loved one.
July 2020
This is a bit late but several years ago my mother was at Handmaker to recover from a pulmonary embolism. I am a healthcare professional and so I know how things are suppose to work with this care. Im happy to report that my mother did well, felt right at home, I was not at all worried about her in Handmakers care and she returned home. I can recommend this organization
June 2020
I just wanted to give a 100% great review, my dad has been going to different rehabs for therapeutic rehabilitation since February and he has been put in horrible places so far until he was taken here. I am very impressed with this rehab program and how they treat my dad and how they treat me his daughter. They give me weekly updates and keep me in the know with any new covid patients that they have taken as patients. I am too happy with our experience so far. Thank you so much for treating my dad and me like family
April 2020
Handmaker has gone above and beyond for my parents and we are so thankful!
April 2020
Clean, friendly and the food they serve their residents is exceptional.
January 2020
Some people are unhappy where ever they are. My stay so far has been very comfortable. The staff is friendly and accommodating. Most of the guests are happy but, you cant please everyone. I ended up here by chance. I feel grateful to be at Handmaker.

A great place for elder recovery
October 2019
Handmaker is one of the most clean, huge, professional staff, polite personnel ever. My mother was there ordered from her doctor and our social worker suggested that place here in Tucson Arizona in Pima County. The first day we didnt know exactly what to expect, but nurses and technicians did answer all our questions regarding my moms staying for therapy. They have several sections with an amazing facilities in each section and I should say that the security of this place is great, if you are visiting after hours, you need to call from the phone by the main entry, then they will direct you so you can come in. In the section my mom stayed it was always lit, no mater what time of the day is, hallways thru the whole building is well illuminated, each room has their own television set with remote control, closet, counter, air conditioning, adjustable bed (not exactly hospital bed, but close) vinyl floors throughout and restrooms with bars. Each bed includes a buzzer to call for help. Breakfast, lunch and dinner times always in time and with a delicious food. They also have bring a piano player, singer and so many distractions for patients. This place is great.
August 2019
What a wonderful place. My Father has been there for several weeks now and the staff, both medical and administrative, are very kind and knowledgeable. They helped us every step of the way and I cannot imagine having gone through this situation without their help. It was not a one size fits all approach, they really care and are extremely attentive to the needs of their clients.

Only non profit nursing home in Tucson. They wont throw you out if you run out of funds. Truly caring place with very good Kosher food. Many activities and employees who care

Its really great
September 2018
I have been a volunteer at Handmaker for a little while and it is really nice to see how much all of the staff genuinely care about the residents. They know them by name and are always looking for new activities, programming, and things that can be done to enhance the lives and experiences of the residents. Definitely recommend.
July 2018
So pleasant and friendly. Enjoy visiting with the residents and there is always something to do.

November 2016
Clean, good staff and mostly private rooms.
April 2016
My mom is a resident at Handmakers. They take such good care of her, and it is clean and comfortable. It gives my dad peace knowing is is safe and cared for in a clean environment. We love it there!!
April 2016
Unfortunately, many are not inclined to share a glowing review of a nursing facility as they would their favorite pizza place. At the time of this writing, my mom is a resident and is receiving very good care from a largely competent, conscientious and compassionate staff. Not everyone fits this description but what institution, business is completely free of at least a few sub-par people?Additionally, besides being centrally located and proximate to 3 hospitals, the courtyards and grounds are lovely and invigorating for the residents (only caveat is family needs to take them out there) and the facility very clean, which for me is telling. In short, I am very pleased.
September 2015
Lillian Fisher, a friend and a wonderful woman, spent her last days in Homemaker. No one wants to leave their home, especially Lillian, but this retired Superior Court judge, was very comfortable in this assisted living facility.
