For the past decade "Independent Living" has been an option in our financial plan. Living in a small semi-rural town with limited services and somewhat isolated, driving for groceries and medical services became increasingly stressful. As we approached our nineties, friends and family increasingly expressed concern for our wellbeing, suggesting it might be time to at least get our name on a waitlist at a senior living facility. Persuaded by the wisdom to do so, a close friend scheduled us a tour at Atria Bell Court Gardens, a quiet residential oasis in central Tucson. Upon stepping inside, my spouse exclaimed "I'm home!" No wonder; the core of Atria is a charming 1926 Mediterranean-style hacienda which reminded her of her grandmother’s guest ranch a few miles to the east where she was raised. The common areas include a spacious well-appointed living room (for relaxation and used for concerts, lectures, and meetings); a comfortable library and reading room; and a spacious dining room with views of the lush vegetation, bath house and swimming pool in the central courtyard. The efficient residential apartments which form the perimeter of the facility are comfortable and quiet, most have modest balconies and views of the interior courtyard or the surrounding landscape. All units and public spaces are air-conditioned, pets are welcome, and a second courtyard serves as a dog park. Atria makes it possible for its residents to forget the stress of grocery shopping, the time and energy of cooking and cleanup, with the advantage of inhouse dining. The main course menu changes daily, with a set of standard items also available. Servers are friendly, engaging and courteous, and residents clearly enjoy the options of lively conversation with close friends, the pleasure of making new acquaintances, or the peace of dining alone or the convenience of takeout. Although personal cuisine tastes obviously vary immensely, the kitchen consistently provides an appropriate mix of food choice. But it is the staffing and services that make life at Atria so welcoming, comfortable and personable. The robust Engage Life program offers a daily array of activities and programs designed to enhance the quality of life for residents within a supportive and caring environment that is both friendly and gracious. These qualities are essential for elderly residents in their advanced years, often away from lifetime friends and family. Although we are relatively recent arrivals, we immediately started developing new friends and acquaintances; consequently, we could not be more pleased with our decision to make Atria Bell Court Gardens our new home.

I was reluctant to come at first. I didn't want to leave my house that was full of my memories of a happy marriage of 63 yrs. My husband had just passed away and I was comfortable here. I soon was convinced that I wouldn't have to worry about the upkeep of a large home, nor any financial surprises. There would be no need to cook or clean up, because two meals were provided in the rent, as well as housecleaning. I could be a " lady of leisure" and enjoy the many activities, fun and educational , as well as keep my health in check with the many types of exercise, mental stimulation, and various other informational health aides from different health care visits from professionals in their fields.

My husband and I enjoyed volunteering for several winters at Picacho State Park so I was familiar with the beautiful Sonoran Desert of Southern Arizona. When he passed away during a dreary winter in the Pacific NW, I decided I needed more sunshine in my life. Tucson looked like a perfect fit. I came as a winter visitor in 2017 thinking about what I wanted for this next chapter in my life. After renting a park model home, it was clear that I no longer wanted any home maintenance and absolutely never wanted to plan a meal, shop for food or cook a meal again. I also decided that more social contact would be optimal. I spent that winter visiting senior living communities in Tucson. They all met those basic needs, but Atria Bell Court Gardens was outstanding in so many other ways. First of all, it has an old-world charm and ambiance that can never be matched by the glitter of a new build. The original (1920's), poll house and plantings; the historic hacienda's original wood floors, ceiling beams and stone fireplaces; the children's dining room (now a quiet meditation room) off the main library with its vaulted tin ceiling; four delightful guest rooms in the hacienda. These features, matched with an ideal hidden location near medical facilities, restaurants an shopping, made it an ideal match for me. The resident apartment wings were added in the 1980s when it became a senior community. Atria Bell Court Gardens has been my home since 2018. My large 5th floor apartment overlooks the Rincon mountains as the sun rises. Maintenance is done for me, the food is much better than I would have ever made, and the Engage Life Director and staff are superior to anything I could have wished for. We moved from our home in VA 4 years ago to be near family. Atria Bell Court Gardens provided us with a built-in community of neighbors and fun activities. It was so easy to adjust to our new surroundings and make friends. Residents and staff are friendly and caring. We enjoy the socializing and the food in the dining room. We use the transportation provided for shopping and appointments. Come and sample retirement as it's meant to be lived!

2025 saw major budget cuts, food quality plummeted from great to poor, many residents left because of that. Older building, more maintenance needed, poor management plus low budgets. Great staff, wonderful residents too.

What an absolute home run this Easter weekend was at Atria. Everything you could desire in one place. The experience was hands down stellar. Atria had a welcoming atmosphere, entertaining activities, and being a part of it all was very fulfilling for the holiday. My mother moved in two years ago. She truly enjoys living here. She has made many friends and that is huge since my father passed prior to her moving in. She loves the many, many activities they have. The staff is friendly. I would recommend this community to everyone. It's a historic building and has lots of history. Soon as you walk through the front doors the lobby area is delightful and cozy and warm. A must see if you are looking for a place for your loved ones.

The facilities are unique and attractive. This ambiance helps make your transition more comfortable. The residents are understanding of the need to adapt and often use humor to make the days brighter. Meals are not "as Aunt Joan" would have made them, but they are tasty, with ample portions and an interesting variety offered. The maintenance, dining room and administration staff are all excellent and always ready to fill requests and answer your questions.

If I could move in I would! It took my dad a few months to the idea of moving but after 1 month of finally officially moving in, he is like a new person! He LOVES the food. The staff is amazing. The environment fun, and loving, Everyone is always friendly, and my dad is not a social person, but he always makes friends at meals. Vicki and lauren have gone above and beyond to accommodate us and welcome our family and it's specific needs, despite several setbacks, they still rooted for us! I love the mansion ad the atmosphere better than any other place I visited. The dog park and pet friendly environment is a huge plus. I sure hope my Dad can stay Independent as long as possible so we can keep visiting him there and I LOVE that you can rent one of the gorgeous suites to stay in! Huge bonus! The pool feels like a spa resort, just like The Arizona Inn, which I also love. I hear it's very quiet compared to other places and peaceful and there are always fun activities and events to attend. I can't say enough about how much I love this place.

Before making our decision we visited a number of senior living places and came back to Atria. We have been here several months now and know it was a good decision. My mother, 94, has lived at Bell Court for nearly a year. Last week, four of her favorite nieces came to visit from Ohio and South Texas and it was wonderful to be able to have them stay in guest rooms on campus just steps from Mom’s apartment. A few quick call-outs: Megan and John and Samara at the front desk are always a pleasure to deal with. Trevor and Puhl in the dining room provided friendly and efficient service on the evening all six of us dined together on site. The food was delicious, thank you Chef Xavier. Waitress Suk was a delight at breakfast. And Deborah is always responsive and accommodating in sales. I’m sure I’m leaving out some friendly faces that my cousins enjoyed interacting with during their stay, but the bottom line is everybody had a wonderful time and came away impressed with Atria Bell Court Gardens!

I lived at this Atria for three years before I left for medical treatment. So much has been written about the food, beauty and activities at Atria Bell Court Gardens and I would like to write about the staff. You won’t find people kinder, more helpful or fun than the staff at Atria. Each person has special qualities that are just what you need at the time. They treat you like family not renters.Tony Penacchio, the director, is a good example.He makes sure you know the rules and follow them but does this with kindness and understanding. You feel comfortable around him know you can talk to him. If I didn’t have a medical problem I never would have left Atria. Where else can you find a work staff who pitches in to help without being asked or checks on your animals if you’re sick.Tony has been seen helping in some areas when workers don’t show up for work. Other staffers will bring a package to you if they think it is too heavy. So if you want to be part of a big family rather than just a renter this is the place to happily spend your senior years.

BEWARE of the lease terms, move in specials, and referral bonuses. Atria is corporate owned, driven by profits, shareholder demands and dividend yields. Independent living with annual arbitrary lease increases of 5% - 8%, with no logical explanations. Be prepared for a non-refundable community fee, and eventual corporate doublespeak on the refer a friend. Mom will love the location and food until next year’s rent increase. Lock in your lease for at least three years. The transportation, and amenities are competitive with other Sr. Living communities. Choose wisely.

Atria Bell Court Gardens is an absolutely beautiful Independent Living Community and a piece of Tucson’s history! The old mansion home creates a very homey yet sophisticated atmosphere. The staff here are always so friendly and have been going above and beyond during the pandemic to make sure their residents are as safe and as happy as they can be. My mother had lived at Atria Bell Court Gardens for the past ten years. She recently moved due to her need for an assisted living facility (Atria is independent living). One of the top reasons for our high rating is the competency, and caring of the staff who create an environment that focuses on being responsive to residents requests and needs. This year they've worked well together as a team to ensure resident safety during COVID-19 pandemic. The physical environment and grounds are lovely. We will forever be grateful to the executive director and staff.

I recently moved my parents from San Diego to Tucson. I wanted to find a place for them on the east side that was easy for me to get to. I looked at a lot of places, and this one just felt right for them. It is not pretentious and has a charm about it. The grounds and common areas are lovely and well kept up. The staff that I have encountered thus far have been wonderful. I spent quite a bit of time here prior to my folks moving, to get things ready and bring stuff over. The main receptionist that is there during the day, I have seen the most often and she is fantastic and very caring. As you walk through the halls, the residents are smiling and very welcoming. You have different ages on the elderly spectrum here -- it is Independent Living which worked well for my parents. My Dad is completely independent, whereas my Mom has some dementia and needs assistance with ADL's. They provide basic Independent Living amenities including the emergency pendants and have a home health care agency onsite that contracts out space. The dining room -- as being someone that was an ED at a Senior Living community in San Diego many years ago -- I know this is HUGE with residents. We recently had dinner with my folks this week in their dining room. The servers were moving fast to be responsive to a full dining room of residents. The food was pretty good, and definitely a step above from the place my parents came from in San Diego... tasted more fresh. So far, we really like it (as does my Dad) -- super close to everything, nice staff and lovely residents and community.

We have a very friendly community with supportive staff. I feel well taken care of in the two-plus years I have been a resident. We are well fed and have outstanding programs, including exercise and musical entertainment. Our residence is in a beautiful historic building in well maintained grounds in the incomparable Tucson climate in the Sonoran Desert valley surrounded by four picturesque mountain ranges. It's almost like living in a western movie set. Come for a visit to experience the wonderful life we live every day..
