Moving my mom into a memory care facility was one of the hardest decisions I had to make. She has dementia, and due to changes in our family's living situation, it was no longer possible for her to live with a relative. I was worried about how she would adjust, but after 9 months, I can honestly say it was the right choice. Brookdale Utica's memory care senior living has far exceeded my expectations. Since moving in, my mom has become more social, active, and genuinely happy. She is always smiling, has made new friends, and thrives every day taking part in different activities. It’s been such a relief to see her enjoying her golden years in a safe and supportive environment. The staff here are incredible”kind, friendly, communicative, and truly attentive to her needs. They treat her with dignity and care, and it shows in how comfortable and content she is. There entire team is amazing to work with. Knowing my mom is so well taken care of gives me peace of mind. My mother resided in the memory care building. However, when I toured the facility, most of what was shown and discussed reflected the assisted living side ” not the memory care unit. The memory care area lacks critical support: there is no nutritionist, med techs instead of nurses on staff and nurse/director and no specialized care for residents with additional health needs. Follow-up and care of residents relied heavily on the family if they had someone. The food provided is high in carbohydrates and includes juices ” both of which are major concerns for a diabetic diet. My mother suffered a severe fall that occurred here at this facility and if my mother didn’t have six children actively involved in her care, as well as a patient advocate, she would likely be in serious trouble possibly died. While the aides at Brookdale Utica are outstanding and makes the place look good . They are kind and hardworking, the facility itself is severely lacking in proper oversight and medical support and cleanliness. Heavy urine oder at times. You’re paying a lot and not getting the care. The billing portion was vague and easy to hide charges. When making inquiries, met with a bad attitude. Still fighting for a refund I Have since moved mother to a new facility and amazed how she is thriving, happy and alert. She is starting to stand and transfer with assistance when prompted. This is r remarkable from a server fall - neck injury. Her meals are balanced with meat and carbs.

Our family knew two people who had been at Brookdale and spoke highly of the care they received, so we decided to look into it. From the moment we chose Brookdale, we knew it was the right place. The staff, the cooks, and the overall environment made it feel just like home. It was truly a wonderful place for my grandma. She loved being part of the community”playing bingo, attending mass, enjoying music, and doing crafts. My mother was a resident at Brookdale “ Utica for a 1-1/2 years. Throughout that time she received consistent and compassionate care. The staff assured she didn’t miss any meals, administered her medication timely, and helped her to attend numerous social activities (bingo, painting, cards, musical entertainment, games and so on). There was almost no turnover in staffing, so Mom got to know everyone and they all knew her. Yes, there are larger facilities but Brookdale’s smaller size was to its benefit. The facility was clean and felt like home. All of us would expect this kind of coverage for the outlay involved, yet it is seldom delivered elsewhere. I know my mom received excellent care on a daily basis. A special thanks to Ursila, the in-house nurse for her skill, honesty and integrity throughout our journey. Our family is forever grateful.

Brookdale assisted living is a great place compared to the last place I was living at. The staff are very professional, attentive and compassionate to your needs. Their good at doing the daily things that you no longer can do by yourself, and that takes a special person. Their on top of their game with nursing needs and weekly doctor visits along with physical and occupational therapy as needed. You have to realize that it's not the name on the building that makes it great, but it's the staff that works there. Just ask any of them how many years they have been working there, because that says a lot. If your concerned about cost, you will not find better living accommodations for the money.

When the time came to move mom to an assisted living facility 1 1/2 years ago our family selected Brookdale Utica after visiting others in the area. The management at Brookdale were professional and showed compassion at this difficult juncture in our lives; when the roles of parent and children change. My mom, Anne, could not have been in a more caring and safe environment than at Brookdale Utica. All of her caretakers and the staff possessed empathy and understanding to her evolving physical and memory capacities. Each of them treated mom with consistent respect and care. Mom loved to banter and laugh and all at Brookdale were quick to come to know her as an individual and engage with her. Family and friends were welcomed and enjoyed being able to visit in her room, other areas of the facility or sit with her at meal times. She loved participating in the daily activities and socials and when her memory and physical abilities declined would be escorted by caretakers and staff to attend. My biggest challenge when not able to visit her in person was to reach mom by phone as it seemed she was always out participating in activities during the day! Thank you to everyone at Brookdale Utica for their compassion and professionalism throughout my mom’s residence. It was so comforting to know that she was in good hands.

We moved our Mom to Brookdale in February 2024 from a different assisted living facility where the care and cleanliness had continued to decline since the 3+ years she was there. As she has dementia, her personal care and hygiene was a priority, yet they continued to neglect it. From the moment I made the call to inquire about Brookdale's services, I knew I had found the perfect place. I explained mom's priorities, and how important it was to ensure she was getting hour by hour care for her particular needs. In only 4 short weeks that my mom had been there, the amount of care, communication, and sincere kindness was quite unbelievable! Brookdale has everything mom's other place was lacking: An onsite nurse and maintenance; consistent laundry service, cleanliness (no urine smell), consistent personal hygiene care, good food, and best of all, CONSTANT communication about mom's needs (none of which we received at her previous facility). I have received calls from the nurse, the caregivers, the sales manager on a weekly basis to ask me questions about mom's needs. This facility is like a dream come true! Nicole, Brooklyn, Ursila, Leah, Flori, are all outstanding professionals who truly care about their residents. They bring so much enthusiasm and interest to their jobs every day. Our only regret is that we didn't bring mom sooner. If you are considering assisted living, I highly recommend Brookdale Utica!

Our family was very reluctant to place our mother in the care of others and delayed the process for as long as possible. Once we were no longer able to care for our mother we visited about 12 different facilities and felt the most comfortable with Brookdale. Its smaller and more intimate and very clean. We were very happy with the care that was provided for my mother who I believe was a very challenging patient. The staff was always patient and communicated well with our family to ensure we were up to date with everything. In hindsight, we probably should have moved her into Brookdale sooner because they were able to provide better care in a professional manner than us trying to figure it out. They notified us when it looked like things took a change for the worse and let us occupy the facility 24/7 for the final couple of days. Highly recommended.

We went into Brookdale with high standards and expectations and were impressed with every aspect of care (e.g. nursing, nourishment, PT, medical visits, coordination with hospice). The facility itself is extremely well-maintained, bright, and, in general, welcoming. Brookdale Memory Care Utica was our mother’s home for two years before her recent passing. When it was time to look for a place where mom would be safe, secure and well cared for, we toured and talked with many facilities. Brookdale Utica staff (and the building set up) felt warm and welcoming, from our first visit. The majority of staff had longevity (in some instances more than fifteen years) and we could feel the homelike, friendly and caring team atmosphere. Our mother had seven children and each adult child had a different parenting style when it came to mom. Brookdale Utica staff could not have been more accommodating with each of us! Each went above and beyond to be sure we all were comfortable with mom’s care. If we wanted to take mom to church, a restaurant or an outing - they would have her ready. If we wanted to sit with her in the gorgeous sunny courtyard, they would offer coffee or a cold drink. Any question or concern we had was answered by Claudia, the facility nurse. Monika, the Life Enrichment Coordinator was also a special person. She always stopped and spoke to our mom, held her hand, gave her a hug and tried to get mom to join activities! Though we’ve specifically singled out these two caregivers, all of the caregivers went above and beyond to make our mother a part of their Brookdale family. The staff’s love and genuine caring was visible to us and to mom’s visitors. Our family is thankful we entrusted our mother’s care to Brookdale Memory Care in Utica. We are sending our thanks and sincere appreciation to each staff member because each member really made a difference in our mom’s life!

The matriarch of physical care - Ursula - who is the glue of the operation there - is one of the finest people in physical therapy and nursing care I have ever met. She works with some of the nicest and kindest people in the industry, including Flourie, Marija, Bryon, Chenita, Shanrita, Kelly, Nicole and Brooklyn (intake specialists), and Pat (the cook who took special care with dad's eating specialties. We were blessed to have Mom so well cared for. Mom moved into Brookdale Utica’s Memory Care in April of 2022, and was there until her passing January of 2024. Due to her advanced Alzheimer’s she was unable to walk or feed herself and required an elevated level of care. It takes special people to make a career of the role of caregiver, and the staff at Brookdale is amazing. First and foremost Dorina “ who provided Mom, who she called Oma, with constant warmth, smiles, affection, and the best of care. Also Claudia, Flori, Mike, so many more, who cared not only for Mom but all the residents with the same kindness, patience, and compassion. I witnessed this each and every visit. I highly recommend Brookdale Memory Care to anyone with a loved one in similar circumstances.

My 98-year old mother stayed at Brookdale for nearly 5 months recovering from a broken hip and femur. She was well-cared for and treated with kindness and respect by everyone on staff. Those who worked with her most closely (helping her with dressing, showering, medication, getting in and out of bed, and to the dining room and back) paid attention not just to her physical needs, but were careful to protect her privacy and dignity as well. We are deeply grateful for the professionalism, competence and sensitivity of staff, which includes the Physical and Occupational Therapists associated with Brookdale. PT & OT were instrumental in providing the therapy which got mom back on her feet, walking, and able to "graduate" from Brookdale. I hope my mother does not have to return to an assisted living facility but, if she does, I will be on the phone to Nicole, Ursila & Tracy to let them know we want Mom to return to Brookdale.

Some people can just drop their loved ones at a memory care facility and leave. It is truly hard for me to fathom that. And those same people can be asked to do a review of a facility that they never visit - and they do. As a frequent visitor to four different facilities that my mother was in over the course of six years, I was afforded the opportunity to see the good, the bad and the exceptional. I am not going to lie, Brookdale of Utica’s Memory Care (BOUMC) was the oldest of the facilities and we paid a lot more here than at previous facilities. But in contrast to all of the previous facilities, the turnover of caregivers was minimal and they were some of the most hard working and dedicated individuals I have encountered. It was refreshing to see that they were not playing on their phones - as was an issue at all of the other facilities where Mom had lived. During my interactions at all four facilities, I managed to maintain close relationships with the caregivers and many other staff members. As a result I have learned first and foremost that the CAREGIVERS are the heart of a facility! Don’t ever forget that. The CAREGIVERS are the ones in the trenches! The CAREGIVERS, at BOUMC have more heart than I have seen at ANY of the other facilities! Anyone in a leadership role who does not encourage their caregivers to bond with family members is out of touch with the reality of this disease, and the pain it imparts on families. And they certainly do not belong in a leadership role of a memory care facility! The bonds between family members and CAREGIVERS are ESSENTIAL to helping weather an EXTREMELY difficult journey. The honest and open relationships that I had with all of the caregivers and most of the staff, allowed me (and my family) to process the slow decline of Mom and what was to come. I cannot say enough good things about the CAREGIVERS and the other staff that I worked with closely at BOUMC. There were many who worked more closely with Mom, so I really got to know them and saw their kindness firsthand. I am beyond grateful to these individuals including Dorina, Amanda, Sandra, Esha, Angel, Lala, the two Lauras, Mimoza, Nelle, Suzana, Loredana, Monika, Flori, Claudia, Midnight Mike and Kitchen Mike. Thank you for giving my mom the best care, making her smile and feel loved! It makes my heart happy knowing that during Moms last year and one-half she had care that was second to none! Your care and concern allowed me to sleep at night, knowing she was in great hands! And your love, and hugs gave me strength that I needed to push through this difficult journey! The Brookdale staff is very enthusiastic in working with my family to ensure that my father's needs are met. They are all extremely kind, compassionate, care very much and treat my father with respect and dignity; especially Ursila the Health and Wellness Director and Sybil the Executive Director. Ursila always makes herself available to answer our questions about our father's care and she is always on top of his needs and medications. The facility is beautiful both inside and out. The place is extremely clean with many community areas including a hair salon, library, pool table, outside patio with gazebo, TV rooms with comfortable couches, dining facilities along with rooms with large tables for residents to play games, do puzzles or play cards.

We moved our Mom to Brookdale Utica in July 2023 from a different assisted living + memory care facility where she had been neglected and treated like a vegetable. My only regret is that we didn’t move her earlier. From the moment Mom walked in the front door, every staff member at Brookdale Memory Care treated her with kindness and a truly caring attitude, for which our family will always be grateful. Even when her health rapidly declined and she was restricted to a wheelchair, staff was always by her side or just a few steps away. And when she became incoherent and unresponsive, staff continued to speak to her cheerfully and, most importantly, as a person with a name. It was in the final days of Mom’s life that Brookdale really excelled and I will forever be thankful that she passed peacefully in their care in her lovely room. Nursing staff and aides could not have been more compassionate with Mom or with our family as we gathered by her. The women who appeared and kept her comfortable treated her with tenderness and dignity, as always. Update to previous review: My mother was at Brookdale Utica for just over one year. She passed away peacefully on August 12th. My heart is broken, but I will be forever grateful to the wonderful staff for the love and care that they gave to my mom. They treated her like their own family. I highly recommend Brookdale Utica if you ever have to make one of the most difficult decisions of your life. This is a truly special place with very special people. My mom has been at Brookdale Utica for just over two months and we couldn't be happier with her care. Claudia, Flori, Denise and the entire staff are AMAZING. They treat my mom like family. My Mother-In-Law moved into Brookdale Utica at the end of January 2023. She passed on August 17th at Brookdale. When we first pulled up in front of the building (middle of January) she said "It looks like home". She loved the homey look and feel of the outside, she also loved the smaller size. The other facilities we toured were much larger and was very intimidating to her as she had some dementia and was scared she would get lost. She didn't have that fear with Brookdale. She loved the whole feel of the place when we toured and the staff was very friendly and helpful but, lets be honest, ALL the places we toured were friendly and helpful because they want you to pick their facility. We figured time will tell and we can always move Mom if it doesn't work out. We didn't need to. Brookdale lived up to the hype. Everyone was always helpful and friendly! They took very good care of Mom until the end! We cant say enough about this facility! From the Aides who took such good care of Mom even when she fought to understand why she needed certain services. They were so incredibly patient and gentle with her! To the Activities Director who would go to Moms room to take her to the numerous different activities during the day ( she LOVED Bingo and the Bingo store!). She also enjoyed the morning exercises, music in the main lobby, the last activity she participated in was an event for 1st responders in the parking lot that included hot dogs, ice cream etc...She made some wonderful friends in her short time and we know for a fact that she will be missed by the entire staff as many were very upset with her passing. One of the biggest selling points for us is the longetivity of the staff!! That speaks volumes about a facility that keeps the staff for long terms! We truly are glad that this was the facility that Mom choose as it turned out to be a blessing as we watching her blossom during her time there. She was around her peers again and they all became fast friends!

Update: My mother had such a wonderful experience with Brookdale. The staff are simply amazing. The turnover of employees is very low with Brookdale. So your loved one is always cared for with familiar smiling faces. The staff not only cares for the physical needs of your loved one. They engage with them, greet them with smiles and affection, and provide a loving hug with they need it. It was difficult for my family to relinquish care of my mom. But I had the greatest confidence that she would be looked after with dignity and respect. I still highly recommend Brookdale. Do not hesitate to put your loved one there. Updated review: I wrote a review over a year ago about Brookdale of Utica Memory Care. This is a follow-up to that. My father was at Brookdale of Utica MC for one week shy of two full years. He passed away on March 8th. I just can't tell you how grateful my family and I were to have the most compassionate people who took care of my Dad for these past two years when we could not anymore. The most amazing part was when we were still with my Dad after he passed, waiting for the funeral home to come, all of the staff came in to see him and kissed him, told him they would miss him, and had tears in their eyes. I knew that they cared about him, but the love they showed to him and our family after he passed was just incredible. If you must make the worst decision of your life to have to put a family member in a memory care facility, look no further than Brookdale of Utica. Thank you to all of you!! We had to find a place for my father to live last March. His dementia was making it too hard for him to live at home anymore. What an awful situation that was to be in, but what a Godsend it was to meet the staff at Brookdale of Utica. Right from the very beginning, they tried to accommodate my dad by getting him a hospital bed, a cushioned pad for the floor in case he fell out of bed, and they would even ask him what he wanted the chefs to make for him to eat. One thing that my family and I find truly amazing is how all of the staff who work there know all about him on any given day. They know how his day is going, what he ate that day, what his demeanor is like, etc. Most of the people who work here have been here for more than 10-15 years. They truly care about each of their residents and their families, and it shows. They even had a Veteran's Celebration complete with lots of red, white, and blue decorations, balloons, and cake. The most amazing thing about that is that my dad was the only veteran there. It was like a whole celebration in honor of him! He even said, "I was treated like a King!" So thankful for all of the staff at Brookdale of Utica Memory Care. A special thanks to Claudia, Isi, Flori, and Dorena! If you find yourself in an awful position to find memory care for a loved one, give Brookdale of Utica a call. You will be glad you did, and be able to rest knowing that your loved one is being well-cared for.

From the moment I started contacting BrookDale Senior Living I knew I made the right choice for my grandma. Sadly she only lived there for 18 days before gaining her wings but she was well taken care of. You walk in and it feels like a home. The staff greet you and continue to treat you and your loved one like family. We had different family members visit throughout the day during her stay and we were all pleased. My Mother lived at Brookdale Utica in the memory care section for over 5 years. Every day that she was there, I was so thankful for the wonderful staff who took care of her. From the kind ladies in the front office who were always there to answer my questions or give me some help or advice, to the cooks in the kitchen that cooked up and served many amazing meals, to Brookdale’s loving nurse who looked after the health and wellbeing of all the residents to the most WONDERFUL caretakers, who went over and beyond each and every work day, showing patience, love and compassion to everyone they cared for, I realized very quickly that this staff was not just taking care of the residents, they were taking care of each and every one of them as if they were taking care of their very own Mother or Father. As time went on, I felt the staff came to feel like an extended family to my Mom and all our family. They were all a WONDERFUL BLESSING not only to Mom, but to all of us. I can't speak highly enough of the care he received, as well as the truly caring and understanding staff. Whenever I visited, Dad's room was always immaculately clean and organized; the staff friendly, caring, and always available to lend needed aid or answer questions. My choice of Brookdale - Utica came down to the people I encountered from Jacob in Admissions to Claudia the Head Nurse and the wonderful aides who saw to Dad's many needs. Another factor was I found the facility not too big nor not too small -- it was just right! I was so relieved to know that I made the right choice - five stars all around - highly recommended!

Our mom moved into Brookdale Memory Care in Utica, MI on Valentine's Day, 2020. She spent twenty wonderful months there before she passed - this past October at the age of 98 1/2. We have nothing but positive things to say about her time there - as we know her life was extended due to the phenomenal care and love she received from the Brookdale staff. Our mom had visitors - four to five times a week - and she always looked beautiful - with her hair styled, wearing her jewelry and makeup. She looked just the way she wanted to look - and this was so important to her. To the staff at Brookdale - every single patient was important - they were all treated LIKE FAMILY. Our mom would mention the fun activities and celebrations they had for the residents, and often, we were sent pictures/videos of these special days. Before her stay at Brookdale while she still lived at home, my husband and I had been taking my mom to play cards with her friends - at other senior facilities in the area - and we never saw anyone else receive the extraordinary treatment and special care that our mom received from the wonderful, compassionate, professional Brookdale staff. Throughout Covid, we were sent regular updates from the facility as they all worked through the protocols, so we always felt well informed- and we knew they were doing everything possible to keep our mom safe and healthy. She really enjoyed the meals too - and at the end, when she was too weak to feed herself, her caregivers fed her to make sure she was receiving her nourishment. She began to exhibit acute behavioral disturbances due to her struggle with dementia, as well as an anxiety disorder. Despite trying the best we could, this heartbreaking development made it ultimately impossible for us to keep her and those that cared for her safe and secure. Faced with this realization, we turned to Brookdale Utica for assistance and support. Our experience with the staff has been nothing short of amazing, as they went out of their way to ensure that my mother, and even I at times, had enough emotional support throughout the duration of my mother’s transition. The nursing team properly administers her medication, keeps her social, and holds events that create a sense of community and inclusivity. They are equipped to deal with her violent outbursts in a kind manner and have gone above and beyond to ensure that she is safe and taken care of. I couldn’t be more grateful to Brookdale’s staff and highly recommend this facility to anyone that has a family member that is struggling with this horrible condition. We moved my dad into Memory Care at the end of March. He had behavioral disturbances which made staying at home impossible. The decision to move a loved one into a home can be so hard and heartbreaking and the expense can be shocking. We were SO glad that a place for mom helped us find Brookdale. We have been VERY pleased with this facility. My dad who loves to eat always seemed to enjoy the food and it always looked good. They had a lot of fun activities for those who could participate. The home was always clean and well kept. My father needed to be sent to the hospital and I found the support I was given by their nurse director to be so helpful - I will always appreciate that. We used their hospice services which turned out to be the best thing for my dad. They were always there checking on him and giving us updates. My dad and all of us got so much support and kindness from them. They made sure his passing was peaceful which we all are so thankful for. All of this said a place is only as good as the staff who work there. That is where Brookdale shines. They have the MOST AMAZING staff. They always new who my dad was, could tell us all about him. They were always so kind and caring even when my dad was at his worst. The staff always made us feel welcomed and would always make sure we were ok during tough times - thank you for that. My father was a resident at Brookdale Utica first in their rehab building and then in the memory care unit as he showed signs of dementia. Dad could not walk but he was given therapy to keep his body moving. The caregivers were great with him. Especially with this pandemic, the whole Brookdale staff did all they could to keep the residents safe. My family was able to see dad safely with the protocol that was in place. We were always free to voice our concerns regarding his care and medical needs. The administration, nurse on staff, and assigned caregivers treated him with compassion and love, as part of their family. Holidays were celebrated and family was always invited.We were very pleased with the three years of care he received at Brookdale. Dad passed last November at the age of 91 . He was happy there which made my mother and family relieved to know

My Mom was at Brookdale after some medical emergencies and it was decided that she just could not live by herself any longer. Every single member of the staff was great and very patient with Mom, and some days that could be difficult, to say the least. Kind, caring and compassionate is how I would describe the staff at Brookdale. One staff member in particular puts her whole heart into everything she does for the residents, that would be Doreen G., she is an excellent caregiver and you would be so at ease knowing that she is watching over your loved one. The facility itself is very clean and well appointed . The rooms are quite spacious and cleaned daily. The meals are good and they try to keep the residents happy with many different activities.
