Four years ago we moved my mother to Seattle from her home in NH to live with and be cared for by my family. One year ago she transitioned to Callahan House after a short stay at Aegis of Shoreline. My mother suffered from dementia and was in decline for the full year. Last week she died while in hospice at Callahan House. While obviously a difficult situation my family is grateful to the staff at Callahan House for caring for her. When she moved in she was able to have her dog Beanie with her which was huge is helping her transition to the new environment. While eventually we had to keep Beanie at our home the staff always was welcoming when we would arrive with Beanie for visits. The activities were the centerpiece of her life at Callahan. Seeing my mother engaged with a group in exercise class, arts and crafts, or a live concert meant so much to me and her. The staff always made the effort to include her in the activities. The staff were wonderful in her care and it is a testament to the entire staff that after a stay in a hospital we were relieved to get her back to Callahan House in hospice care, in a familiar setting with a staff that truly knew and cared for her with Beanie visiting. While she did not pass her last days in her NH home she did pass “at home” in a familiar setting surrounded with family and staff members she knew and who knew her. The pandemic has put stresses on the medical system and assisted living in general. My mother’s care for the last four years has been a bumpy ride at best. My thanks go out to the staff at Callahan House including concierges, nurses, activity directors, care directors, managers, med techs, general care, facilities and kitchen staff for the caring environment they created at Callahan House to support all the residents on this difficult phase of their lives.

Aegis Living at Callahan House has been an incredibly supportive environment for our mother. The staff is so personable and sincerely cares about the wellbeing of each resident, even in some of the most difficult situations. Everyone, from the direct care-givers, to the activities staff, to the concierge, to the support staff, and the management, is so attentive. Even during COVID lockdown, they have tried to keep residents and their families as connected as much as possible.

Our family considered ourselves and our father so fortunate to have him in the Callahan House. It was safe, clean, the staff were incredibly attentive to all the residents, and made an effort to get to know him and provide social enrichment activities.

We feel very fortunate to have discovered The Callahan House at Aegis. It is a first class operation from the top down. Great administration, wonderfully caring staff and a beautifully appointed, always clean, facility.

Two years ago, due to our moms quickly progressing dementia, my sister and I decided to move her from N California here to Shoreline, close to where I live. We feel really lucky to have found Aegis at Callahan House. We love that it is its own cozier, quieter building devoted to Memory Care, separate from the bigger, bustling Aegis of Shoreline Assisted Living building (next door). The atmosphere is both comfortably family-like, and very competent and professional. All of the staff, from the directors and concierges and nurses and care staff to the arts and music therapists to kitchen and facilities staff, are so good at caring for residents with dementia, and every staff member Ive met is warm-hearted, calm and competent, kind and amazingly patient. Many of the staff have worked at Callahan House for years, and everyone, even newer staff, seems to get to know each resident well and can anticipate their needs. In these past 2 years weve dropped by at some point during most of the different shifts and have observed that no matter which staff are on shift, mom is surrounded by caregivers who have gotten to know her and who are familiar to her (even though she cant remember names anymore!)We always feel very welcome to use any of the common spaces, or to join in activities. Mom especially loves sitting by either of the two fireplaces, or to sit out on the pretty garden patio when the weather is warm, or to join the daily walking club over to the beautiful park across the street. Our family has also been happy with the great variety of activities, especially those with the professional art and music therapists on staff, performances by musicians who come in several times a week to entertain the residents, and the scenic bus rides once or twice a week.Like for all the residents and their families, this is a poignant and treasured time for us. Our mom is frail in both mind and body, and two years ago she was going downhill pretty fast. Since settling in at Callahan House, shes been much more stable, lively, has her sense of humor again. She is well-taken care of, and were very grateful for the peace of mind that having her at Callahan House gives us.
