I stayed at Penrose Harbor for rehabilitation following back surgery. The facility was almost brand new. The private rooms were clean and comfortable. The staff was marvelous. Everyone was caring and considerate. The physical therapy was just the right intensity and I was able to go home in about a week. I would recommend this facility to anyone in need of rehabilitation services.

Great facility with amazing staff! Clean and attentive to their patients. I am an ER nurse and this is where I choose to send my family member if they are ever in need of rehab services! Barbie and Catherine shout outs and thanks for taking such good care of my dad! Sincere gratitude for all of the staff that works there!

I highly recommend Penrose Harbor for short term rehab. I was there following back surgery. I had a good-sized private room which included toilet and shower facilities. Each day I received OT and PT services from highly trained and caring professionals who moved me toward my physical goals. The food selection for 3 meals a day was incredible in variety and flavor. The care given by the nursing staff and assistants was exemplary. They never appeared to be rushed, found ways to make my days special as they treated me like a friend not a client and went above and beyond in providing top quality service

Josephine Stortini

My name is Josephine (Josie) Stortini. I am a resident at Penrose Harbor Assisted Living at Herons Key in Gig Harbor, Washington. I am 71 years old and was diagnosed in May 2014 at St Joseph Hospital, Tacoma, with a rare terminal neurodegenerative disease called Multiple System Atrophy with Orthostatic Hypotension. My journey from 2014 to present has been full of frequent hospitalizations due to my disease impacting many systems in my body. Before I came to Herons Key in 2012 I was in an and out of hospitals, on Palliative Care, on Hospice in an Adult Care home which was not a good fit. I need more care that my husband could not give me because I was advancing in my disease. My hospitalization prior to admission to Herons Key was the last straw for me. It was emphatic I needed more after care, could not go back to the Adult Care home, Please God Help and Direct me. The discharge social workers gave me three names of skilled facilities and one I never heard of. I had been to the other two already in the past. I looked up the name Herons Key on my cellphone and I saw a picture of the Physical Therapy Room. It looked modern and I figured it looks new they would have maybe more advanced PT therapy so I chose Herons Key.That evening I was transported by ambulance and as I was rolled into the entrance, of course I was laying on my back, I noticed the ceiling and the lights. I said, Am I in a hotel? I was greeted by a friendly staff member who escorted my entourage to my room and I couldnt believe my eyes! The room was big compared to what I have lived in during my hospitalizations and rehabs. The bed was an automated double size bed with a clean coverlet and matching curtains. THEN THE BEST, I HAD MY OWN BATHROOM AND SHOWER! EVERTHING LOOKED BRAND NEW! Herons Key has only been opened about a year! I thought I died and went to heaven! God has answered my prayers! Ken, my husband and I were bewildered! He had been looking and facilities and homes and nothing compared to Herons Key! I MADE THE RIGHT DECISION SITE UNSEEN! THERE WAS MORE TO COME! I can go on an on.The staff is professional yet very friendly and engaging. I met the Head of the Physical Therapy Department Paul and he explained my plan of care and it was very different. Yes it included the typical physical therapy course but it was holistic. I was sold. I started right a way three times a day everyday of the week plus a day off. I also had Occupational Therapy everyday and Speech Therapy everyday since I had swallowing issues. Diet had to be liquid and until my therapy improved my issues and diet would adjust accordingly. I couldnt believe it, I was standing at the side of my bed with a walker the day after I was admitted to Herons Key and first day of physical therapy! This was September 2019.By October 31, 2019 after months of intensive PT, OT, Speech Therapy I moved into my Assisted Living apartment at Penrose Harbor Herons Key Campus. I never thought my life would improve with my disease.. I feel Herons Key has added years to my life expectancy because of the love, care, holistic approach of therapy and health management given to me. I am a retired registered nurse and very cognizant of the health care system and expected health care of a patient and Herons Key is stellar in meeting those guidelines as I know them. As I said in the beginning, I thought I died and went to heaven! Well, Herons Key is, HEAVEN TO ME!

This facility is lovely and the whole staff is supportive, knowledgeable, and caring. I was thankful every day that Penrose Harbor was available to me after a significant leg injury. During my 10 week stay, I was treated by a physician, 24-7 nursing staff, and highly trained aides. In addition, I received comprehensive PT and OT therapy. The selection and preparation of meals was incredible.

I can not say enough good things about Penrose Harbor. My mother (95) spent her last 2 months of her life in skilled nursing. EVERYONE was loving, caring and willing to go above and beyond to take care of her needs. My mother had lived in another assisted living facility prior to this and the care was no where near the level she received at Penrose. I cant imagine a better place for your loved one when care is needed.

My parents started out in independent living at Herons Key but medical issues happened and they moved into assisted living. My parents have loved everything about Herons Key and now the Penrose Harbor area. Assisted living is managed very well, both with the amount of assistance someone may require as well as medications, meals and social interaction. Before Covid, there was as much or as little social activity that someone might want to participate in. My mother was a social butterfly and was always doing something. My Dad is not really social so hes just happy to be in his apartment. And by the way, all apartments and rooms (skilled nursing) are upscale and very nice. Since Covid, I am so happy with the way they have kept my Dad safe (my mother passed away at the beginning of the year). My Dad is very pleased with their actions. I am as well. He feels safe there and that they have gone to extraordinary lengths to keep their residents safe and well. The facility has tested everyone as needed. They have handled meals very well. The staff keep an eye on residents to make sure theyre doing ok and have called me anytime they see a possible issue. My Dad and I both think the staff is amazing!Ive heard about other assisted living facilities. Herons Key, Penrose Harbor has taught me so much about what you should be looking for in a retirement facility, assisted living, skilled nursing. I am able to tell my friends in other states what to look for when they help their parents. I am so thankful my husband and I found Herons Key, Penrose Harbor when we moved here. I am thankful my Dad lives in such a wonderful facility with caring, professional staff.

I was in horrific shape when I arrived. The staff was phenomenal. The Nurses and CNAS were the kindest and most helpful staff. They kept my spirits up for the 83 days I was there. The activities center was great keeping me entertained. I always looked forward to going there. Her attention to detail was wonderful. The PT and OT staff were diligent in pushing me to succeed in walking and to be able to go home with ease . They were beyond exceptional . They supported me every step of the way.The facility is beautiful and extremely taken care of with daily cleaning and sanitizing. The food was quite good. This is why I rated it 5 Stars.

Our latest interlude with Penrose staff was rehab following transmetatarsal amputation of right foot. My overly conservative surgeonensured I received the full Medicare allotment of 100 days of skilled nursing.During that time I interacted with most of the RNs and CNAs assigned to the skilled nursing section. Other daily engagements were with OT and PT specialists and weekly reviews with medical director who is also my PCP.As I progressed from wheelchair to walker, everyone was cheerful and supportive. Nurse Joe erected a bird-feeder outside my window whichprovided entertainment throughout the day - 10 species seen.Dining services were good and special requests cheerfully provided.Due to Covid-19 restrictions, no visitors were allowed, but family could come to my window for face-to-face interaction. If you need nursing care, this is the best option in Gig Harbor.

This is the second time Ive been to work at Penrose, and it continues to improve. Since its conception, the health care management has striven to build a better care team, and it is evident that everyone here is deeply invested in their work.

I am a resident at Herons Key and have had two opportunities to stay at Penrose Harbor Im Skilled Nursing. As a retired RN my care was excellent and truly caring. The food was great. The rooms are all private which provides privacy. I recommend highly.

Penrose Harbor is part of the bigger Herons Key, and it really feels like a part of the community. There were lots of events and speakers and performances that we loved. The nursing staff was very helpful and professional. Thank you for all of your work!
