Spent two weeks here for hip fracture rehab. OP and OT staff were exceptional. Professional and so supportive and knowledgeable. Nursing staff were caring and got my meds on time. My recovery went well because the staff was so attentive. Thank you Shukson

Where do I begin? I have never felt so loved and cared for in my entire life. From the people who prepared my food, cleaned my room every day to the incredible physical and occupational therapy and maintenance. The nurses work amazingly to make sure may meds were right. The staff at the front office and financial expert were encouraging and kind. The CNA's gave me such good care. Not one complaint. I loved talking with them about their jobs and lives. I loved the residents. One gentleman always gave me encouragement and support. Jay, who I believe was head of admissions came in every morning to check on me and asking me if I needed anything. It was difficult to leave. I felt like I was leaving my family. Who ever is reading this and considering a facility for a loved one, you couldn't"t find a more professional and loving environment. They are the best! I wanted to mention the speech therapist. She taught me how to sharpen my mind and think with clarity and a deeper understanding how speech and mental acuity work as a unit.

My mother spent more than three years at Shuksan between illnesses and injuries, beginning in 2011: 26 months as we battled outside doctors' misdiagnoses of Alzheimer's and other progressive, terminal dementias; then, after she recovered her mind completely following a brain shunt to treat Norman Pressure Hydrocephalus at UWMC (NPH--please, please look this up! It's reversible!), another year for incredible physical therapy from Dale, Jan and others, recuperation from skin cancer and cataract ops...Dr. Lindebaum's extra efforts helped enormously. She went back home to live on her own with part time support. From crippled, incontinent and in agony requiring morphine, screaming, delusional...home again, to her New Yorker magazines, books, PBS and Cocette, her cat. Because of Shuksan. Because of caring staff. I cannot describe all the challenges they met, acute physical and cognitive symptoms they dealt with so patiently. But this Shuksan story doesn't end there. Eleven months after leaving Shuksan, my mother's motorized wheelchair catapulted her three feet down into a concrete-floored garage. The fall shattered all the bones in her shoulders, her arm sockets, an arm, leaving her also an aneurysm bleeding into her brain. Eight "Hospitalists" from the same outfit that had missed and dismissed NPH, misdiagnosed Alzheimer's, sentenced her to die without recovering her mind--now insisted my mother's treatment should consist of opiates for pain slipped toward Hospice. No way. I thought of Shuksan's staff, the nurses I'd met there, attention from admin. And when I was told "An Olympic athlete could not recover from this. So don't imagine that at 84-years-old..." my first response was "Don't tell that to Dale." So to Shuksan she went. Two, maybe three months later, my mother returned to her house, Cocette, her books, kids and grand-kids, a stack of fresh New Yorkers. I write today because this is the seventh anniversary of my mother's first hospitalization. Her family and friends hope for many more. I credit Shuksan, people and place. As a former nurse I know how much staff, from CNAs to RNs to doctors, with or without tattoos and piercings, make a difference. My mother sends her best and her gratitude. So do I.
