If you are looking for help recovering, you couldn't find a better place to do that than at the Colonnades in Charlottesville, Virginia. I had a very severe fall in France (on the first day of my vacation), and the Colonnades were a lifesaver in my recovery. I came in in a wheelchair with a leg so red and swollen I wouldn't let anyone touch it. Two months later I rolled out of the Colonnades with a walker and a very happy experience behind me. I continue to thrive and improve based on the foundation they provided. The Colonnades were very welcoming when I arrived. The staff prioritized the residents needs and were quick to step in if someone was about to do something risky. The physical and occupational therapists were excellent: dedicated and creative and providing both types of therapy six days a week. We residents used to joke that we needed to make time in our day for the hard work of resting. That was because the therapy was aggressive enough to require a rest afterwards, but never so much so that it set us back. The courtyard with its lily pond provided a way to get fresh air. After my spending most of my summer in bed from my broken leg, I cherished the opportunity to get out (and the doors were set up to where we could press a button to let ourselves out even from a wheelchair). The dining room was peaceful and comforting with fresh flowers daily and relaxing music. The meals were very good with many options and staff eager to meet our needs. The bakery was fantastic. By sitting with the same people at each meal we developed friendships, and I am still in touch with several of these friends from our "Breakfast Club." I give the Colonnades 5 stars.

My parents have been residents since 4/2020. They moved in during COVID. They really enjoy their lives at the Colonnades. They have made many friends. What really stands out to me is the care and attention the staff provides to the residents. I went to dinner last Wed, and the dining room was VERY busy. The staff was out numbered. We arrived a bit late, and there was no open table. However, Faith was able to set a table within minutes. We got our beverages in a timely manner and we're served yummy dinners shortly thereafter. We were so impressed with the teamwork and care and courtesy we were shown. Chef had the kitchen running like a well oiled machine. Thank you FAITH! Thank you CHEF! Thank you to your amazing team!

Everything was fine here until my parents had to relocate after two years. The assisted living program could not accommodate a couple living together. However, even after moving, my parents are continuing to be charged the full amount for three additional months, while paying for assisted living in a new place. This seems unethical and so disappointing. Our attempt to appeal this has been denied.

My Dad was here about 5 years ago. First in independent living, then assisted living and finally skilled nursing. Excellent care all around. My Mom moved into assisted living about 2 years ago. Vast difference. Sunrise (which owns the Colonnades) made changes which resulted in an almost complete overhaul of the administrative staff and many of the nursing staff left. Independent living is probably just fine...those people want amenities (pool, cloth napkins, fine dining, dancing, etc.) and don't need a lot of care other than companionship, pleasant well tended paths, and good food. But when they move into assisted living there's a dramatic change. Woefully understaffed and I suspect underpaid employees. I found most of the nursing staff in assisted living to be really trying to care for their residents...a few in particular were really wonderful...but the administration at the Colonnades does not support their staff...financially or professionally. Sunrise is a for profit business. Their goal is to make money. I would look very carefully at assisted living at the Colonnades before signing up. Very expensive. It's a tiered system. Everything you need help with is an added expense. And costs increase every year. This year costs in assisted living increased 10%. Which was not reflected in quality of care. PT provided in the health care/skilled nursing unit, however, is excellent!

The staff are amazing and so kind and friendly. This is the best facility of its kind that I've ever been to - which is why we decided on the Colonnades. It feels more like a top notch motel with all the amenities you'd expect. I know my dad is well cared for and attended to. Can't say enough great things about the Colonnades.

My parents live at the Colonnades in Charlottesville. I had the good fortune of visiting them twice this summer. We had so much fun! We laughed so hard at our table in the Dining Room one night that a sweet lady with a sparkle in her eye stopped by and asked, "Can I join your group?" Nathalie, Dolma and Mimi were among the greeters who found a table for us each night. They were true professionals and knew my parents by name. They seem to know everybody! My dad can give people a run for their money with his silliness and joking. His memory is not what it used to be, but the ladies were never patronizing. They kept him on his toes by responding to his jokes in the most good-natured and respectful manner. It made him smile and my mom beam. Our servers were friendly and jovial, and ensured we had what we needed. I wish I knew the names of each member of the wait staff to thank them personally, but I count Taishawn, Prince and Betzyra among the many wonderful individuals who made by parents smile. My parents enjoyed our meal each night and felt there was a wide variety of offerings. They look forward to dinner each evening because of the meal and the joyful social interaction. Their friends are delightful and have many things in common with one another, so there is much to chat about. It is a great place to get to know the other residents. I was astounded by the many pretty walking paths around the campus, as well as the paths in the woods. I went out on several early morning walks and felt safe. I have no sense of direction, unfortunately, but I didn't get confused because the paths were well marked with signs giving clear directions. I took photographs and even a few videos while walking there. For example, I recorded a few seconds of a babbling brook and some deer quietly munching away at the edge of the woods. Someone is taking very good care of those paths and I appreciate it very much. Those individuals have ensured the trails are free of debris and that any dangerous bumps (tree roots) were marked with the correct "caution" yellow paint. All of that takes planning and effort and creates a safe environment. I encountered various folks in the hallways and other community spaces. We met up with residents during fun activities. All made an effort to introduce themselves and learn about me and my parents. I found that very welcoming. Even Wayne, the facilities manager stopped by to say hello. The front desk staff cannot be ignored. Tom and the others made me feel welcome and took great care of my parents. The mailman was helpful, too. My parents will continue to explore activities. In fact, they love to dance to 1950s music and are hoping such an event can be arranged. My overwhelming experience in this community is one in which the residents are treated with kindness, patience and caring. As long as my parents are pleased, I am pleased! A sincere thanks to everyone at The Colonnades.

We are so happy to be in Charlottesville at the Colonnades. First the location is almost perfect. We still have 2 cars and find we are only a few minutes from everything in Cville (family, hobbies, stores etc). If you want to drive less, there are cars and buses to deliver you to the door -- we have learned that this is great for going to UVA to the doctors. Basically you can get where you want in your own car and, or with Colonnades transportation. When you are home, it really seems like home. We moved from a large 2 story house (after 35 years ) and our apartment is about half the size (1,400 sq. ft) but it is bright and open and wonderful lighting -- you do not feel small. Our furniture fit in well and we are very comfortable. The kitchen is small but totally what you need to fix a lunch or breakfast or the occasional food for a guest. Main meal of the day is in the Dining Room and the food is very nice (I dont lie, it is an adjustment after cooking and making all the food choices for 50 years but the food is good and the effort -- not! No prep and no cleanup! The best part of Colonnades are the people. They are experienced -- they have been great places and done interesting things and they continue to do so. They are nice to talk to and welcoming. Almost all are happy and still involved fully in life. If you are nice, you will find people that are nice to spend time with. Lots of activities but you are also free to do your own thing -- participate or not. The opportunities are here to fashion the rest of your life to your specifications. If you need more care at some point, you will get the support and facilities right here on campus. We are among the youngest here -- I am so glad we have made our move and finished the work of home ownership while we were in charge. The only one happier is our family who know we chose where we wanted to be and are living the good life as defined by us. Join us.

Several years ago, my wife and I stopped by The Colonnades to visit a friend. This was a couple of years after I had a stroke. I could walk with a cane, but we were living in the mountains of North Carolina and I could no longer hike, work in the yard and do many other activities I loved. As we were leaving The Colonnades, I said to my wife, Thats a pretty nice place. I could live there. But we, especially my wife, were not ready to leave the mountains. However, a couple of years later she got tired of chipping ice on the walk and some other things, and shocked me by suggesting we take a tour of The Colonnades and really check it out. So one of our daughters joined us, we took a tour, they put us up in one of the Guest Cottages. and we signed up the next day! We had so much going on in the mountains we did not move in for about three months. But we have been here almost five years now and love it! If you want to participate, there are all sorts of activities. Some friends visited us for a couple of days and compared living here to being on a cruise ship, but on dry land. Great food, tons of activities, field trips, everything a cruise ship has to offer. We both volunteer in The Colonnades library, use the machines in the weight room, participate in several exercise classes (I can no longer walk with a cane, so I attend sit-to-be-fit where most everything is done sitting in my wheel chair), I play poker, she does bingo. and there are several bridge groups. I cant name everything, but you get the idea. There is plenty do. And transportation if you need it for doctor appointments, shopping, the movies, wherever you want to go. The people are friendly, and the staff is fantastic. Just as I said before, were living on a dry land cruise ship!

My mother was a patient in the Health Care Center for 14 weeks. Every day was filled was excellent care, kindness and compassion. The staff were amazing with my mother and with all of us. Mom chose to remain at the Colonnades instead of entering hospice care because she was so pleased with the experience she was receiving. We spent as many hours as possible with mom each day since we knew her time was limited. The staff were always courteous to all of us even when we were in their way and they feel like family now. The love and support we were shown during moms end of life care was incredible. We will never forget how much kindness you showed us. A heartfelt thank you just doesnt seem adequate to express all they did for us.
