Moved love one in during winter ice storm from rehab. The tour guide / sales director Oliva was amazing to work with. Dee the director of Business helped put a plan in place. The facility is clean, maintenance Ryan goes above for residents. The food is amazing. They order off a menu with some great choices. Activities are so many to keep everyone engaged . My love one has already made such great friends the socialization is so good for everyone. We have already referred several people. Go check them out.

There really isn't enough room for me to elaborate on this facility. My mother was a resident for over 16 months, she passed on the 11th of April. I could never have written this review while she was there, for fear of retaliation or being asked to remove her. I passed by Dee on several occasions after her passing and she never acknowledged me or my sister to offer her condolences. First let me begin by, She was evaluated before she was accepted and we were assured they could handle her needs. We were told that they would include her in the activities and taken to the special events. After two months several staff made her feel like a burden or they didn't have time to include her. My sister and I spent almost every morning and every evening for the entire 16 months as they never had enough staff to adequatley fill her needs, and or their promises. There were many days where she was left unchanged (she was incontinent) for up to 12 hours a day. We had video and audio recording 24/7 and have the video proof. She would activate her call bell for assistance and no one would show up for 45 minutes to an hour, on several occasions she had to call the front desk from her cell phone to get assitance. She was a hoyer lift and we requested that the staff be trained on the proper use of this equipment, as we also have video proof of one staff member who almost dumped her on several occasions. They are extremely short staffed and are overworking the few good staff members who have stayed and who are there for the right reasons. There are dangerous staff shortages on the weekends. There have been at least 4 head of Nursing Directors in the last 16 months, the turnonver in staff has been a big problem. They let go of the ones who truly cared and have kept the employees who reek of pot. The majority of the five star reviews posted on this page were given by former and some current staff and family members. I have screen shots of them all. There is one who fictiously stated she had a family member there at present and was very pleased with the staff and her care. She was the staff...The elevators are consistently broken, I'm not sure that the inspection certificates were ever signed by the proper people as there were only names and no signatures. . If you take time to talk to the residents and or family in Assisted Living they can tell you how baths are not being given, laundry is not done consistenly, bed linens rarely changed. It is a beautiful facility but that is where it ends.

We are so far pleased and excited. Not even moved in yet, we have received lots of calls that the apt is ready and thankfully, they offer auto draft. The sales girls made our family feel special and we are excited see our Dad do things with the people he's met so far.

Not the place to go. There is no leadership. Noone to talk to about "situations". There is practically no staff. No director, no director of medicine, no RNs. The food system is terrible. The food is terrible. I had my dad in memory care when it first opened. It was awful. I thought maybe all these years later, they could've fixed some of the problems. Things have only gotten worse. They will promise improvement but it's just lies. It is money driven with really no interest in the patients.

I recently visited to consider residency for an elder family member. I was very impressed with the care and professionalism of the Sales team; they were attentive, patient, and compassionate. The facility is beautiful, and the Activities events at that time were well attended and engaged by residents. The entire staff seemed courteous and welcoming: the perfect environment for an elderly family member. This is certainly my top choice if the time for a move does come.

The people make this community a wonderful place to live. I've been to every Senior Living in the area and they all look and feel like senior living, but this is more like an upscale hotel. When I walked in the front door there was a large Bistro area, and it just kept getting better from there. I met my uncle in the dining room for lunch. The servers were nice, and the meal was delicious, and I met the Executive Director when she stopped by our table. This community just has a different feel to it than the other places we had looked at before my uncle moved here. I highly recommend this community to anyone that doesn't want to live somewhere they feel like they're in senior living.

From the moment we walked into The Barclay Senior Living, it just felt right. Miss Tiffany at the front desk was kind and welcoming, and every staff member we met treated us like family. You can tell they truly care about the people who live there. My dad has settled in better than I ever expected. He’s comfortable, smiling more, and finally feels at home. The place is clean, warm, and full of good energy. I’m so thankful for everyone at The Barclay ” they’ve made what could’ve been a tough transition into something really special.

My father in law has been living at the Barclay for 2 years. It is a beautiful facility. We have been very disappointed in the maintenance and cleaning. It is quite expensive so we had expected things to happen as promised. His apartment is supposed to be cleaned once a week and at this point it has been 3 weeks since it was cleaned. He has had open maintenance tickets for months. He also feels that the food has really declined in the last year.

David Cullen The facility itself is impressive. It resembles an upscale boutique hotel with plenty of community lounge spaces and very friendly residents and staff. I have yet to meet an unfriendly staff member. Tiffany and the front staff are truly welcoming, helping and naturally friendly. The memory care unit is locked to prevent residents from wandering and to keep unauthorized persons from entry. The memory staff starting with Lisa right by the door, is very welcoming and by nature nice. She always goes out of her way to speak with us during our frequent visits. The memory unit staff, as a whole, is made up of caring people. Tammy specifically takes my father his medicine, soda and ice cream every night. I really want to say that the activity director, Jennifer is very involved, innovative, caring and keeps us updated with his participation and how my father's disposition is. His care plan and follow up is outstanding. The only issue I have is parking as a handicapped visitor. The residents, naturally, occupy the the generous number of spaces and the specified visitor parking is limited near the front door. I have to rate this facility as very top tier. My wife and I are even considering retiring there as the location, facility, and amenities are outstanding for the costs.

My Folks are very happy here. Employees are friendly and warm. The Nursing team is excellent and respectfully monitors and cares for residents. The Barclay is very clean and well appointed. My folks enjoy the Coffee Bar with Patricia each day. We particularly liked the modern, architectural designs with a large and well maintained interior courtyard with sun and shade options. Residents with green thumbs can play. Staff makes or breaks an Assisted Living facility; the Executive Director certainly has a passion and a heart for the elderly. A big change from the prior. My grandmother has been at the Barclay for about 3 years she transitioned to memory care and we were a little worried about the challenges she would face. It was a hard choice to place her in a facility to begin with. My grandmother immediately took to the manager Jennifer in memory care she's always going the extra mile to make them laugh. Every time I am there they are doing something. She does exercises, crafts, and she's always comes up with fun ideas. She has made a world of a difference in my grandmothers life. My mother entered memory care in this facility when it was still Anthology. Back then, one of the major complaints was that the activities program completely neglected memory care. Since new management took over and it became "The Barclay," everything has improved - care, food, housekeeping, etc. Nothing has improved more, however, than activities. Now that Jennifer C is running activities, my mother is busy doing fun and stimulating things almost daily. What an awesome transition! Greatly appreciated.

Absolutely do not place your loved one here, especially if they have memory issues. We had a terrible experience at The Barclay (which used to be called Anthology — the old name is literally just covered with a vinyl wrap on the sign outside, which should’ve been the first red flag). The rebranding seems like a way to run from a bad reputation, not improve anything. We moved our 94-year-old father with cognitive impairment in, and things went downhill immediately. The room wasn’t clean or ready — we had to clean and fix things ourselves just to move in. We were told he’d be treated like family, but what we saw was him being left in an empty room in a wheelchair for hours. The little bit of food we saw him eat was mostly sandwiches and chips — not the meals we were paying for. Once, they served undercooked chicken to memory care residents who only had spoons and forks. After just 5 days, we found a much better place and let them know. Instead of supporting the transition, they quarantined him in his room and wouldn't let him leave until we moved him out 5 days later. We had to hire private caregivers from BrightStar to stay with him during the night because we didn’t feel he was safe alone. Staffing is a mess. The building is huge and empty, and with how few staff they have, I can't imagine what would happen if they ever filled the place. The memory care unit is already hard to navigate and isolating for someone with cognitive issues. It’s easy to get lost and there’s often no one around. When we complained, one of the staff got fired and the head of nursing admitted she was thinking about quitting after only 5 months — she even said the place was awful before new management and was only “better than it was.” That’s not reassuring. We paid nearly $9,000 to get in and then got hit with another $8,000 bill because they claimed we didn’t give 30 days’ notice — even though we told them just 5 days after moving in that we were leaving. Bottom line: This place is not safe, not honest, and not worth the money. It’s big, cold, understaffed, and just not the kind of place you want to trust with someone you love — especially if they need real memory care.

My mother and I went to all of the top independent living facilities in Charlottesville and the Barclay stood out from the pack. It was extremely upscale, and we enjoyed meeting and getting to know the staff, in particular Elizabeth. She was very knowledgeable and spent a lot of time showing us all the various floor-plans and amenities. We would highly recommend considering The Barclay for either independent living, assisted living and/or memory care needs. It does not feel like an institution, but instead, a beautiful, well run luxury apartment building.

Our mother moved in about 9 months ago and the best thing about it was the people...particularly the aides and the admissions coordinator, Samone. They all went above and beyond to make sure my mother was taken care of. It exceeded our expectations in so many ways. The only negative was the executive director (Steve) who we found to be unresponsive and disinterested. Thankfully, he didn't impact my mother at all but he definitely brought a negative vibe. Otherwise, huge shout-out to the staff - Samone, Tanya, Cassie, LiLi, Markel, Garese, Mo, etc.

If there is any information that is inaccurate or needs to be updated, please contact Assisted Living Center.

Assisted Living Center uses the term "assisted living" or "personal care" to inform users that a community provides assistance with some Activities of Daily Living (ADL's). It may not meet your state's legal definition required for that level of care.
