Reviews Highland Cove Retirement Community
August 2026
My mother lived at Highland Cove for six years, first in independent living and later in assisted living. The community’s strongest features are its attractive grounds, pleasant outdoor spaces, and convenient central location in Millcreek. Unfortunately, our experience with the administrative and operational side was inconsistent. Response times for non-urgent maintenance were often very slow. At one point, my mother’s refrigerator remained broken for months. Room cleaning was marginal and did not consistently meet expectations. Staff turnover was also a significant concern. During my mother’s six years at Highland Cove, there were four executive directors. New leadership was not always clearly announced, and calls were often slow to be returned”or not returned at all. Nursing leadership also experienced frequent turnover, and it was unclear whether the assisted-living activities director was ever replaced. Many times I would have to leave multiple messages to get issues resolved. The facility itself is dated, and the food was adequate. Highland Cove has a lovely setting and a good location, but it would benefit greatly from more stable leadership, stronger communication, better housekeeping, and more timely attention to maintenance. As a corporate owned facility, we though they would have received more and more professional services.

I took a tour of this facility. I was delighted with the beautiful outdoor spaces. Everyone we spoke with seemed very positive and friendly. It seems like it would be a very nice place to live.

I would give this place a 0-star review if I could. I am a former employee at Highland cove. If you hate your parents, this is the place to send them. Do not believe a word [name removed], the executive director says about this place. It is not great, yes, it is falling apart, and a piece of [language removed]. Just ask the kitchen or CNA'S/Med tech staff we will tell you the truth. We will not lie to your face like all the managers that work here. Besides [name removed], [name removed] and [name removed] they are all amazing people and love these residents. I have been working here for over a year now, I only stayed to care for the residents. Wellness director [name removed], a very lazy women who does not do her job. She has no experience in the medical field, no CNA, no Med tech, no RN license. Just a degree in psychology. The only reason why she got the job is because her sister-in-law, [name removed] is the RN manager, who is never here! I have seen her a few times. When [name removed] takes over a med tech/cnas shift she does not know what she is doing. No former training. She expects us as employees to do a lot of work, but when she is in our place nothing gets done. The next day residents are complaining that they did not receive their meds, water, no garbage was taken out. We would have to pick up her slack. There has been bullying going on amongst the CNAS/MED TECHS and it has been brought up to [name removed] multiple times with no resolution. Along with [name removed] going through a divorce, she brings her personal life to work. There have been many times us CNAs/med techs have been left alone with 25 plus residents to care for them, give them showers, meds, pass out garbage. and [name removed] sits on her [language removed] in her office not willing to help anyone. When it is her job and responsibility. She does not know about simple rules of an assisted living, not even how to give a resident a shower. There have been times when she tells us to take a resident's narcotics and give it to another resident who needs it. She also talks to residents about other residents' personal information or with [name removed], her bff who works in the kitchen. Which is breaking HIPPA. Might I add when [name removed] is out, [name removed] quickly steps in to help her. But not her staff who she is supposed to be helping. A former Med tech/CNA named [name removed] was trying to get an employee fired, simply because she did not like her. She would harass this employee multiple times. It was brought up to the executive director, and they did not care. They did not talk to [name removed], and harassment is still going on. I would not trust this employee with your parents. She has had multiple residents fall on her shift, because she is also lazy and does not check every 2 hours on her residents. She left a resident laying on the floor for over an hour, and this resident was bleeding from her head. EMTs could tell she was there for a while because the blood was dry. There have also been complaints from residents that [name removed] was very rude to them, and it was reported but in [name removed] words "nothing could be done." Trust me now when I say you do not want your parents living here. We have a few residents that need soft mechanical diet meals or vegetarian meals, but the manager [name removed] never provides these said meals. It falls on the CNAS/med techs to prepare their food. They do not even have a working food processor in the kitchen. [name removed] is also a very lazy women, she yells at her staff and barley shows up for shifts. The kitchen is always running out of food and supplies. None of the manger's care for the residents at this place. It saddens me to see all of these residents suffer due to be neglected. They cannot stand up for themselves due to Alzheimer's or dementia. I hope to get word out about this place and to prevent any more abuse from happening. I have talked to the high ups, but no one seems to care. There have been over 20 deaths since I been here, there is definitely something wrong with this place. I do not think its old age. The nurse that comes her from Quality, her name is [name removed] just throws medication at these residents. We just had a resident pass away because she was on morphine and lorazepam back-to-back. When staff suspected it was a UTI, due to her always sitting in a wet diaper. When we tried to talk to two nurses about this resident it was dismissed and determined it was just her passing away. Residents are constantly left in a wet brief; trash is everywhere, and this place smells like rotting food.

After my friends husband passed away, knowing she could no longer live at home by herself, I called Highland Cove to put her on a waiting list. I called and spoke with Anne. She went above and beyond in assisting us in a very timely manner. Because a room was available, we were able to move my friend in within five days. It was a God send! The staff greated her so lovingly and made her feel as though she had arrived at home. I will always be greatful for how they made her feel loved and well cared for during a difficult time in her life. They made her feel less anxious and the transition from her family home to her new home with new friends went smoothly. She loves it here. Thank you so much for taking such good care of my dear friend.

An excellent retirement facility! I am so pleased to have found this caring, clean, and fun location for my mother. I highly recommend this place for your loved ones.
June 2024
This place has the most caring employees. My absolute favorite is Ember! You won't find a more caring individual. She is a HUGE asset to Highland Cove. She not only makes the residents feel like a part of her family but the residents' families feel like part of her family as well. Ember is AMAZING! A couple of my other favorites are Tammy and Neil her medical assistants who take AMAZING care of mom and Kathy who is always very friendly and she treats the residents with utmost respect. They are all great assets to Highland Cove!

My mom has been at the Highland Cove for a few years now. I have been so amazed at some of the activities the Activity Coordinator Ember has put together for her patients, friends and families at your facility. My mom still raves about the circus and all the animals that she was able to pet, there was a Hawaiian Lual that was just a riot. There is Bingo, that has symbols for the holidays. Ember is the most amazing, crafty, imaginative, loving and caring person I have met. She is a true asset to the Cove, patients and even their families. You have a couple of medics we are fond of as well. Tammy and Neil are great. They are very loving and caring for their patients as well. I wished we could get more long term staff in the buildings. There is a big shortage of servers and of Cooks. But what I can say..is when shortage of servers all of the staff come to help with serving, taking orders and cleaning tables. I know staff is never recognize much as this world has gotten so negative. I want to shed some positive love to those caring people.

Highland Cove was home for our Mom. She started in the Lane, the independent apartments. She chose Highland Cove, so close to her former home. A brave move after our father passed away to live on her own. She thrived for years even during the pandemic. She found her support through friendships she made...one even saving her life by calling an ambulance. She moved to assisted living...a bit reluctantly at first but flourished with the tender care of the staff. As I visited I knew this was the best place for the lady called "Trouble" Mom left this world with the loving help of her friends at Highland Cove. Thanks is not nearly enough to let all of the staff how wonderful you have been to her.
February 2024
It was so wonderful to have a great reception for my mom at Highland Cove. The process deciding on a place for her was easily made. Thank you.
January 2024
I have lived at Highland Care for two years going on 3. I have great friends and my helpng others has been noticed and commented on. I love the bus rides to Walmart and other stores. The people working there are great and very helpful. My independent living rooms are taken care of weekly and that helps. I don't cook so having all meals available is great. I don't eat beef so when the options are beef and beef. I can get a peanut and butter sandwich or an omelet.

My mom has been living at Highland Cove for the last seven years. She has had a wonderful experience. In fact, when I'm her age, I would love to move in. The staff is so friendly and helpful. You can't find an independent, living center with more beautiful grounds. There are views of the mountains and mature trees, growing everywhere. There's not a week that goes by that my mom doesn't say how happy she is that she lives there.

My dad has been in independent living as well as assisted living and he has enjoyed both. The people at Highland Cove are friendly, helpful and very professional. They make the atmosphere comfortable and inviting. The chef has adjusted menus for my dad’s dietary needs and he really enjoys the meals. The activities are laid back and fun. We feel really comfortable knowing they do the care giving and we get to just go and visit and enjoy time with my dad. Thanks Highland Cove

Very friendly staff that greet you everywhere you go. Brent the Marketeer does a great job giving you an excellent tour experience. I can tell the residents are taken good care of by the environment you feel inside the community.

My Mom lived at Highland Cove in a beautiful Independent Living apartment for the past 8 years. We can't say enough good things about the facility, the services, and especially the staff. Everyone, from the dining room servers to the house-keeping staff to the maintenance staff to the activities directors to the administrators, always were patient, polite, and accommodating. Highland Cove was her home. If you and your family are looking for a retirement community, you really should consider touring Highland Cove.

August 2019
We put my father at this facility for three years and overall we think this community was on the whole a positive place for my father to live. We started in assisted living the moved to independent living. Both were positive experiences. What we loved most about this facility were the staff. The people at Highland Cove from the people in the administration to the activities staff care deeply about the residents. Some individual staff truly went out of the way. I believe the staff are there because they want to support the lovely residents who live there. There are tons of activities (unfortunately my father didn't want to do most of them) but the staff were always working to engage the residents. The grounds are absolutely beautiful and the best of any facility in SLC. And the apartments are spacious. And finally, you receive good value for your investment. And this was important as we were looking to save some money but not compromise on care. You will generally get quality care for your loved one and won't break the bank. Was it perfect? No. We had a few qualms with things like losing internet a few too many times, the loss of a driver for scenic drives (leaving residents without an option for quite some time), and a leak that never seem to get fixed. But honestly, wherever you go, you will find something. So on the whole if you are thinking about your loved one, Highland Cove is an option worth investigating.

In all phases of my father's stay in Senior Independent Living, and later in Assisted Living, we encountered wonderful people working at Highland Cove. The thoughtful management, an interactive and very pleasant dining staff, the patient, knowledgeable and supportive healthcare staff, and the responsive maintenance staff - all these individuals combined their efforts to treat my father with great care and consideration, patience and understanding. Where can you go and have everyone know your father's name? We feel very fortunate to have been a part of this community, and are very pleased with our experience at Highland Cove.
July 2016
Highland Cove has been incredible to work with. We were in a bind to find a place for my in-laws and they were there to get us taken care of. Following this, they were able to get a 2 bedroom unit for them within 2 months. The in-laws moved to Highland Cove from an Ohio retirement community. They have been so impressed with the quality of meals, the prompt maintenance and the overall service and friendliness of everyone at Highland Cove. They love the weekly bus trips to areas all along the Wasatch Front and Back. Marci, Chantelle and Kevin have been incredible. If you are looking for a place for yourself or family, we highly recommend Highland Cove.... They are the best

The decision to place my mother in an assisted living facility was difficult. It was made easier by the staff at Highland Cove. The facilities and serves are excellent, but what really impresses me is the staff. My sisters and I have been supported by Marci and the staff each step of the way. I know that my mother has help 24 hours a day. Daily activities keep her engaged. The meals are delicious and remind me of the foods she cooked. Most importantly, she is safe. I know that she has immediate help if she falls or needs help. She has a sense of independence, but with gentle and supportive supervision.

My 95 year Old mother lived at Highland Cove in the Independent Living for 8 years and then moved to assisted living for 3 months before she passed away. First of all, I cannot say enough good things about Highland Cove and their staff. The director oversees this facility in all aspects in a very professional yet caring manner. The staff are friendly, warm and will always go the extra mile if needed. They "bent over backwards" to accommodate my mother's needs in the last 3 months of her life. The facility is beautiful. The apartments are a very nice size, and very well maintained. The maintenance staff is always there immediately if you need them. The facility itself is just beautiful. It is like living a a resort. There are large and well manicured lawns, gardens and pathways to walk. They even allow pets! The food is very good and only fresh fruits and vegetables are used in their cooking. Also, Highland Cove is a fun place to live. There is never a reason to be bored or alone. Constant activities are available if you choose to attend them. My mother would attend the various activities sometimes from ten o'clock in the morning until 10 o'clock in the evening! You can do as much or as little as you want. And it is a variety: " Not the same old thing" all of the time. My mother absolutely loved living at Highland Cove. She love the place, she loved the staff and they loved her back. Places like this are to find. When I get older, you'll find me there. (If you would like to personally contact me, speak with the individual at Highland Cove who does the tours and placements. She can put you in touch with me by phone. I am happy to answer any and all of your questions.)
July 2014
My parents lived at Highland Cove in the assisted living section from April 2012 to June 2014. The facilities were always clean and inviting. The staff was friendly and welcoming every time I visited. The director, Cody Tower, was extremely helpful after my mother passed away in allowing my father to remain in their apartment, even knowing my dad was progressing into the later stages of Alzheimers. The medical staff was always on top of my parents' health and welfare and kept me up-to-date on their status. They also worked hand-in-hand with the staff of Affinity and Cornerstone Hospice to provide seamless care. During the last ten days of my father's life, when many other assisted living centers would have required us to move my father to another facility, Highland Cove was willing to care for him until his death, telling us he was part of the Highland Cove family. I highly recommend Highland Cove to anyone looking for an assistive living center to care for elderly family members. They will be in excellent hands.
March 2014
My Mom spent 7 years at Highland Cove. It was 'home' for her in every way. The staff is supportive and caring and the chef is world-class. The facilities are well maintained, clean and decorated with taste. The grounds are manicured and lovely to walk in throughout most of the year. My mom had a nice circle of friends almost immediately after moving in and felt welcome from the start. They have a nice array of activities that keep residents engaged, active and busy. She enjoyed the special programs, outings and celebrations that were regularly scheduled. I fully recommend Highland Cove and in fact will live there myself someday! S.O'Hara
December 2013
My grandmother has been living at Highland Cove for over 5 years now. Before she moved into Highland Cove she had a hard time living on her own. Tasks such as showering and remembering to take her pills were quite a challenge. I was not extremely on board with moving her into a facility due to what my knowledge of them was at the time. (I was currently working in a nursing home and wasn't pleased with its results). One day I went and visited my grandmother at Highland Cove about 3 weeks after she moved in. I could instantly tell how much her health had improved and how happy she was. Now, after years of being there, I feel safe knowing her health and happiness is in the hands of Highland Cove.
