My parents moved into The Redwoods Retirement Residence in November 2025, and our family has had a very positive experience since day one. Moving a parent into a retirement residence can feel overwhelming for families, but the team at The Redwoods has been incredibly supportive and has provided guidance every step of the way. My parents often tell me how much they enjoy the meals, and they consistently praise the staff for their kindness and attentiveness. It’s reassuring as a family member to know they feel comfortable, well cared for, and part of a welcoming community. More recently, we’ve been dealing with a new and ongoing health issue, and the support from Crystal and Barb has been exceptional. Their communication, compassion, and willingness to help coordinate care and answer questions has made a stressful situation much easier to navigate. Their dedication truly stands out. Overall, I'm very grateful for the care and support my parents receive at The Redwoods. It has been a great experience for our family.

My mom moved to the Redwoods in 2007 and spent the next 18 years in her new home there. She lived independently in her own apartment and, as she needed more support, transitioned smoothly with the excellent care and resources the Redwoods provided. She passed away at the age of 97 in January of this year. Although I live away from Ottawa, I always felt reassured knowing she was in such a good place. From activities and meals to the compassionate medical and personal care in her later years, everything was exceptional. Crystal, the Director of Care, and her team were knowledgeable, attentive, and always available to answer questions and address concerns. Lynn, the hub of the Redwoods, Karen, Marty and every staff member showed professionalism, kindness, and warm smiles.

Our Mom and Dad moved to Redwoods in 2011, and made their home there for the rest of their lives (14+ years for Mom!). During all of those years, the staff (some of whom have been there the whole time) have been consistently outstanding. Care and services are provided with skill, compassion and great kindness. Our parents experienced the full range of services available at Redwoods, from independent through assisted living. Redwoods' standards in all aspects of care and services are always high, from the varied activities and entertainments offered all the way through gentle, attentive end of life care. Our family was truly fortunate when Mom and Dad chose to become part of the Redwoods community and we would encourage anyone seeking a retirement community to consider Redwoods.

My 95 year old Father chose the Redwoods after a broken hip wouldn’t allow him to stay in the family home. It was definitely the right choice, the Redwoods has the perfect blend of independant and assisted living for my father’s needs. Three delicious meals a day in the dining room, laundry service and housekeeping, it reminded me of A Gentleman in Moscow, it was like he was living in a hotel! It took a few weeks for my father to get comfortable with his new digs, but soon he was participating in the Redwoods community. Attending music in the fireside lounge, popcorn socials, movie matinees and even bingo nights! We want to thank everyone at the Redwoods for the care, kindness and support shown to my father in his final days!

I don’t usually write reviews, but I felt compelled to share our family’s experience with Redwoods. Earlier this year, my 88-year-old father suffered a serious fall that left him wheelchair-bound and in need of more care than my 86-year-old mother and our family could manage at home. After trying a few different places, we did our research and chose Redwoods”and we couldn’t be more grateful for that decision. From the moment he arrived, the experience has been exceptional. The staff”April, Crystal, Karen, and so many others”have gone above and beyond in caring not just for my dad, but for our entire family. The meals are delicious, the activities engaging, and the overall atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Recently, my mother joined him at Redwoods, and I can honestly say they’re both thriving. One of the biggest blessings has been Redwoods’ ability to support my father’s assisted living needs while still honoring my mother’s independence. It’s given them the chance to continue living together in a safe, joyful environment that adapts to their changing needs. Thank you to everyone at Redwoods for making this chapter of their lives so full of comfort and care. We are truly grateful.

Mom has recently chosen to move into the Redwoods. She chose them because they offer the flexibility of opting in or out of 1, 2 or 3 meals a day. Their units have full size kitchens, with full size fridges and stoves. They offer studio, 1 bedroom or 2 bedroom units so as small or as large as she needs and wants to afford. At 93 years, her mobility is getting slower so independant living at Redwoods will allow her to live independently (still shopping and cooking for herself) with the security of emergency medical help if needed, personal safety, housekeeping and laundry.

We chose the Redwoods respite care for my father after his hip surgery, it was going to be as a transition to help him get back to his home of 67 years. After a few short weeks of 3 excellent meals per day, and the discovery of an exercise room, my father has not only started to put on weight, but he's in the process of becoming a permanent resident. The staff have been so caring and helpful that we want to express our sincere gratitude, and big shout out to April whose guidance has helped us navigate these difficult waters.

We moved my Mom into Redwoods earlier this year in May. Her sister was already living there so it was an easy choice to make when the apartment beside her became available. It is nice that the accommodations are a full apartment with a full kitchen, living room, eating area, storage area and separate bedroom unlike some other retirement homes we toured. Once settled in she has been enjoying her apartment, having her dinners made for her, light house cleaning done, the activities, the entertainment and especially being close by her sister. We take comfort in her living there and being cared for by the services that are offered as she needs them and of course that she is close to her sister as well.

My Mother went into the Redwoods for a three week trial stay and never went back to her condo. She absolutely loved it and this was someone who was dead set against an old folks home . She loved the activities offered and still hasn’t managed to try them all after a month. The food is delicious there are always options to choose from. Her suite is newly renovated and very spacious and homey. She has a lovely balcony which she enjoys daily. The staff are excellent, so professional and caring. They went above and beyond to ensure my mother was happy and made many accommodations to suit her needs. April Johnstone is a treasure. She welcomed my mother and went out of her way to make her feel at home. Any requests or concerns we had were answered promptly and dealt with efficiently by April, even on her own time. I feel very fortunate that we were able to get an apartment (and it is a full one bedroom with a full kitchen) at The Redwoods.

My wife had a complete knee replacement surgery and for convalescence we spent 2 weeks at the very good Redwoods . The care which she received was excellent as were the meals which were provided. The staff is very well trained and are friendly and thoughtful and certainly surpassed our expectations . We were extremely impressed with the entire Redwoods organization. My wife will be having her other knee done within the next few months and we will be doing this again. Our stay at the Redwoods was a very comfortable and carefree 2 weeks. Great staff !

The Redwoods is like a hotel with valet parking, dining room with choice of menu, table cloths and napkins and weekly housekeeping. There is entertainment 2 or 3 times a week but much, much more than a hotel. We also have daily exercise classes and arts & crafts. The Redwoods is a wonderful place to live with friendly residents and staff. I recommend it highly. Everyone greets you with a cheerful Good Morning and parts with Have a Good Day. Staff are capable and well trained and many have been here long term. Any problems that arise, be they administrative or mechanical, are dealt with promptly and effectively. All residents have an emergency call bell and there is 24/7 nursing staff on site. The environment is supportive. There are many and varied daytime and evening activities organized by the activities department. There is also a dedicated bus for outings.

I especially like the weekly exercises they offer. Recently, my good friend, Judy, visited me here in Ottawa, and I was fortunate enough to obtain a lovely guest suite for her use. The suite provided by The Redwoods was a two-bedroom / corner suite with full amenities. Judy was delighted by how well the suite was appointed, and commented how "at home" she felt. On the top of her list was the comfort of the bed and pillows! She wished she could take them home!!! I will be entertaining more out-of-town friends in the Fall this year, and hope they will be able to reserve a similar Guest Suite.

I have been a long time resident of Redwood Qualicum Park community for 58 years. When I decided it was time to give up living in my house it was natural choice to move to The Redwoods and to stay in my community. It has been a big adjustment but the wonderful management and staff have made me feel welcome and safe. All staff greet me and other residents by name and were helpful in getting me settled. My large apartment accommodates a lot of my furniture and momentos so I feel I am in familiar surroundings. I have gradually started attending more activities, entertainment and outings. There is always something to do if I choose to but my favourite thing is companionship with other residents and staff. Meals are mostly well prepared and healthy. I appreciate there is always a choice and the menu is posted a week ahead. I am enjoying attending the once a week summer BBQ on the patio. I have been here for 5 months now. My family and I would like to thank the staff at all levels for making me feel welcome. I would highly recommend The Redwoods to fellow seniors looking to make a move to retirement living.

After reviewing similar retirement homes with assisted living options, my family decided that the Redwoods would provide the best fit and care for my mother following her stroke. Even before my mother moved in, April and the other Redwoods staff were very helpful and knowledgeable about the home and what we could expect prior to my mother's stay. After mom moved in, the staff continued to follow-up and check-in on her well-being, ensuring she had everything she needed and participated in various social activities the Redwoods had to offer. I am extremely grateful and pleased at the level of professionalism, care, and thoughtfulness the Redwoods staff showed my mother and us while she lived there. It really made things easier for me as I coordinated everything from outside the country. My mind was at ease knowing my mother was in good hands. I would definitely recommend the Redwoods if you are looking for a safe, caring environment for your loved ones with well trained staff who know what they are doing and care deeply about what they do.

I recently returned home from 30 days of convalescent care at the Redwoods following major surgery. The entire staff were so kind, considerate and accommodating and receiving 3 meals daily, delivered to my apartment, was the crowning touch. The food was so delicious and plentiful I had to request half portions of everything. My one bedroom apartment was so spacious and bright I felt very safe and there were regular checks on me each day and night to ensure I was comfortable. I highly recommend the Redwoods and thank April Johnstone for arranging my accommodation and all the staff for their wonderful care throughout my stay.

My sister and her son travelled to Ottawa for one week and needed accommodation with support services. Her son has MS and is confined to a wheelchair. They fortunately accessed respite care at The Redwoods. The 2 bedroom apartment was very nice and spacious. The bathroom was not wheelchair accessible, however, the manager, April worked around this issue to accommodate his needs. My sister said that the PSW staff are "awesome" and were very helpful to both herself and her son in caring for him. They made him feel comfortable and he really liked them . They enjoyed their stay and many thanks to The Redwoods staff for making their trip a success.

My sister moved into The Redwoods in early April. Her apartment was very clean and a few things that we asked to be changed or fixed were all done. We have found the staff extremely friendly and very helpful. During the recent tornado in Ottawa when they were without power for several days, 3 meals a day were delivered to her and she even had choices. She is enjoying the weekly trips to Carlingwood shopping centre and has enjoyed a trip to see the tulips and a country drive to Almonte to a little restaurant for afternoon tea. She also took advantage of hearing the platforms of two of the major political parties speak in the lounge. I would highly recommend The Redwoods to anyone wishing to make a move to a retirement residence.

When we were looking for a place to move my uncle I looked at various homes and I found the Redwoods to be excellent. The apartments are spacious which was so great because when you’re moving from your own home, it’s nice to have your own space rather then just a room. When we brought him to look at the apartments he was very impressed as well - this was especially nice as he really didn’t want to move at all. The staff are wonderful and know the majority of residents by name A major concern was whether he would enjoy the food - well no concern there as he can’t believe how good the food is. He says he hasn’t had a bad meal ‘. He’s also enjoys the movies they show on the main floor and the music entertainment especially when the bar is open LOL. With all that being said, I would recommend The Redwoods to anyone. In fact when our time comes maybe we will move there

When my now 95 year old aunt decided to move to Ottawa she chose the Redwoods Retirement Residence. Her one bedroom apartment was set up by the time she moved in and she was delighted that it looks so much like her home, in a quiet, mostly residential area of Ottawa, close to many amenities . The fact that the Redwoods has doctors to consult was an added bonus. She is slowly integrating into residential living, has joined in several of the many activities offered daily, enjoys the meals and is grateful for the sense of security she feels, acknowledging that she could no longer live on her own. She has nothing but praise for the maintenance staff, the dining room staff and the personal care workers who are all attentive, respectful and ready to help, even in pandemic times. My interactions with the administrative staff have always been positive and I feel that April, Cameron and the others put the residents’ needs and interests above all else. No question or concern is ever too much for them and the response time to address any issue is impressive. My aunt is comfortable and safe and my worries have been allayed after talking with Cameron or April. All in all, these first three months have been very good for all of us.

In November of 2021 we moved my 90yo aunt into Redwoods Retirement Home. This was following about 2 years of planning with several visits to Redwoods and multiple conversations with their staff. April, the leasing manager was excellent. She was always helpful, patient with our multiple phone calls, emails and questions and very welcoming. Move in day proved that all of the other staff that we encountered - nursing, front desk, social committee, maintenance - were just as welcoming and attentive. It made a difficult transition for my Aunt much easier. Redwoods itself is lovely. The suites are large and bright with large windows and nice views. The lobby and social areas are well appointed with nice furniture and nicely decorated. My sisters and I decided we would like to live there! Overall, our experience with Redwoods was very positive and I would recommend anyone considering retirement living to visit.

My Mom moved into the Redwoods Retirement Home last year after living alone in an apartment. We were prompted to move by a short term illness, but Mom was also just tired of cooking for herself and feeling isolated due to COVID. She has nothing but praise for the staff and the management. Everyone seems to be friendly, caring, and well-trained and the place runs smoothly. She likes the fact that you can spend time on your own if you want to, but you never have to feel alone. There are a good variety of activities of all kinds, going on all day, to suit different tastes, and you can drop in or out without fuss. For our family, its been a great relief to know that Mom is well-looked after and very comfortable in her Redwoods apartment. She goes to a lot of the musical entertainment and exercise classes, and says she has hardly turned on the tv because she is off doing other things!!

The management and staff are extremely friendly and go out of there way to make sure the residence needs are met and that they are comfortable within there surroundings . There are many stories i could tell you on how they helped my mom get adjusted . They made the transition very easy for her . Since being there , my mom has once again become very social and met many new friends . Lots of weekly activities and outings are being continuously planned. My mom is very happy. Sensational Redwoods I just want to say how my mom (Jean Giot) has transitioned from her home in Greely after over 50 years to Redwoods. Mom moved in to Redwoods on Saturday October 9th 2021. with her cat Rambo. Pleased to say both are doing very well. Mom loves to chat and converse and she has been doing that after a couple of days. She is partaking in most activities and meeting several new friends. Each day I learn of all the wonderful things she has done or about to do. She loves the excursions on the bus and this has been an amazing journey for her. Thanks to all the staff at Redwoods that make this experience so special. My mother moved in to the Redwoods Retirement Residence in December of 2020 from Montreal to Ottawa. Being that it was right in the midst of covid I had no way of seeing the residence before she moved in other than through a facetime chat with April Johnstone. April was kind enough to actually walk through the residence while videoing and explaining everything she was showing me. Yes, it still wasn't the same as actually seeing the place but it did help. April was extremely patient and did everything she possibly could to help alleviate the uncertainty of what we were getting in to. We took a blind leap of faith and decided to go with the Redwoods. We could not have asked for a better place. They allowed a family member to quarantine with mom for the 2 week requirement which helped so much since visitors and essential caregivers were not a thing at that time. Now it is almost 7 months later and I can't say enough about how the staff at the Redwoods are always, and I mean ALWAYS, so kind and caring it amazes me that they can constantly be in such a great mood. I have never seen or witnessed any staff member being slightly grumpy. They front desk staff are so sweet and welcoming, always with a smile on their face. The activities staff are just so full of life and always coming up with great activities for everyone to be able to join. Whether it be crafts, various exercise classes for every level of activity, movies (which I wish I could go see), special theme days, outside entertainers come in, current affair talks, zoom presentations, etc. The list goes on. Maintenance and housekeeping..... they have been a godsend. Helping set up mom's apartment when we weren't able to bring in outside help for wall units, etc. Nothing is ever too much to ask of any staff member that works at the Redwoods. The women in housekeeping are so sweet and always ready for a little chitchat. They are always asking if there is anything else they can do to help out. Full kitchen.... mom has a full kitchen which is unheard of at most other residences. Sorry, I can't comment on the food in the dining room because mom makes her own meals but I can say that the dining room is packed with people (socially distanced) so that to me shows that the food is good. When the dining room was closed due to covid all the meals were delivered to the apartments and again, the staff delivering were always smiling and helping the residents set things up. Oh, and the afternoon treats that were hand delivered everyday when covid was at its peak.... they were delicious according to mom and always delivered with a smile. OK, now the man in charge. LOL.... Love him. He is not just a person that sits with a suit and tie on in his office and is just a figure head. Nope... he joins in the activities, he is out digging in the garden and making planter boxes. He sometimes participates in the exercise classes and various other activities but the one that sticks out to me was at Christmas time and they had nerf guns for the residents to try to hit the staff that were pretending to be deer.... OMG.... when the director was "hit" he would throw himself on the floor and pretend to be shot. hahaha!!! He obviously takes a huge amount of pride in the Redwoods and does everything in his power to make it a fun and loving place to live. I'm sorry that this review is incredibly long to read but I wanted to try and get as much as I could in it to help with someone's decision to move in to the Redwoods. It is not a big fancy place. It has more of a feeling of being one big happy home. We definitely made the right decision. Oh, and there is a lovely hairdresser that did mom's hair exactly how she likes it. Laundry facilities to do your own laundry if you chose that are free. I'm sure there are other things that I am forgetting and I apologize for that. The Redwoods has been a great choice for us.

I can only speak on behalf of my relative in this instance, whom I talk to every day, who is not one to complain, but enough is enough and I'm sure is not the only one who is feeling the same way. Yes, the apartments are spacious, staff are friendly and helpful, but the food has gone downhill and dietary needs are not being met. The residents who have the meal package, look forward to their meal, in some cases, it is the only bright spot in their day.This has been going on for the better part of this year-dinners are not being eaten and are being thrown out every night. Overcooked, dried out, mashed potatoes (instant??), are like glue, eggs are overcooked and dried out and are a bright yellow (liquid eggs??).A few examples: for the past month, carrots served every night, meat loaf on a recent night-minimal meat mixed with an abundance of bread crumbs and was burnt, lasagna had chunks of carrot mixed in with the meat as if to stretch the meal, pork chop was dried out and could baely be cut through, let alone chew it. Hard to believe that the current chef is in reality a chef=no chef worth their salt would prepare and serve this sub-standard fare.Who is actually doing the cooking in the kitchen-untrained and unsupervised staff? The food is probably decent, but whoever is cooking, does not know how to cook! If the residents get one palatable meal a week, they are lucky. Chef overheard angrily telling one of the kitchen staff not to give out any ice cream!.Residents say it is not worth their while to say anything to management because nothing will be done, so they will just quietly cancel one or all of their meals. I sincerely hope that this issue will be investigated and resolved without further ado. In addition, long term care clients are being taken in-are housed on one floor which is not locked and clients have been found wandering on other floors and knocking on residents doors.This poses a safety issue.However, this is also somewhat upsetting to residents who are paying substantial rent for promised, gracious retirement living. I;m sure the staff on that floor are doing their best, but the facility is obviously not equipped to ensure wandering does not happen..It is recognzed that perhaps there is no availability in nursing homes for those in need and retirement homes are being appoached for assistance in placing potential clients in need complete with subsidy. October 24, 2020 Update: The meals improved for 3 days, much to the enjoyment of residents, however, thought and care of menu prep and quality of food being served is sliding once again. Pasta meal on a recent night-pasta was like glue. On another evening, pork chop and potato was accompanied by way too much fibre: lentil soup, lentil salad and brussels sprouts and a date square for dessert! Another meal included sliced beets and a beet salad-high in sugar-not good for diabetics. Again, dietary needs are not being considered. What is going on? Better meals are served at the Ottawa Mission! November 2, 2020 Update For the better part of the previous week, meals were below grade.Corned beef and cabbage-corned beef was very tough, Beef Wellington-meat was also very tough-these meals could not be eaten and ended up being thrown out. Breakfast on the weekend and this morning, was the bare minimum, oatmeal and 1/2 bagel-residents were left hungry.No fruit in quite a while.This is not a good situation. What is being done to rectify this? November 18, 2020 Update. It appears someone has been listening to comments from here and there.The Director, in his info. letter to residents asked for comments on the meals in order that improvements can be made. Breakfasts this week have been wonderful, hard boiled eggs, bacon, fruit, dry cereal, another day, mini pancakes, syrup, cranberries, fresh fruit, cereal.Keep this going. December 1, 2020, update: meals have slacked off breakfast a couple of days was only oatmeal.Dinner over the weekend:corned beef(tough), cabbage, brussel sprouts and chickpea salad(fibre overload), pork chop (tough), instant potatoes, carrots.

The entire staff (front desk, nursing, serving, cleaning, activities) at Redwoods is top notch. My grandmother was there when she was alive and my now 94 year old grandfather is still there. Their attention to detail is amazing and he is not only looked after (safe, secure) but he thoroughly enjoys everyday there.I would HIGHLY recommend! They have become his second family.

We just got back from a three weeks stay in The Redwoods. My husband went there while I had surgery and then I joined him for a recovery period. We were very impressed with the whole place. The white linen table cloths, the lovely and varied meals, the excellent service from staff and the attention to every detail we could imagine were really outstanding. We decided we didn't need nursing care, but on one occasion my husband fell and that night a nurse turned up to make sure he was okay. There was daily maid service and a thorough cleaning once a week with clean sheets and all household laundry done for us, and an excellent laundry where we could wash our own clothes. I appreciated that there was a Catholic service in the chapel every Wednesday, (United church on Thursday) and I loved the library which had a very good selection--something for everyone. We didn't take part in too many of the special programmes, but there were lots of things offered as well as an opportunity to take part in volunteering with the library or in other ways. I even picked up some knitting to do for my granddaughter. In effect, residents have their own apartments within the building, but with all the special care the residence provides. I think now, that instead of getting an apartment somewhere and then moving into a seniors' residence, we will just move into the Redwoods permanently!

We hosted a birthday party in The Redwoods private dining room, for my mother and were blown away by how much service was offered to support this event. The meal was delicious and everyone who attended were impressed by the quality. My goodness, since she moved in last March, I have been so happy to feel the caring and consideration offered to all the residents so they have opportunities to engage in so many social events which builds a wonderful community feel among the residents. No place is perfect, challenges arise but the staff at The Redwoods seem constantly up for the task of improvement, getting residents input. I'm so impressed and grateful.

My mother moved to the Redwoods Dec 2018 and from day one, never looked back! Leaving your home of 55 yrs, and being 100% happy in your new environment is quite amazing thing. We have found the residence exceeds our expectations on all levels, the quality of care and food is more than satisfactory. This combined with a staff who "truly" care about the residents and their well being make the Redwood's my moms, and our families, first choice hands down. We looked at a number of homes in the west end of the city before making our choice, and the Redwoods stood out amongst the other residences. My mom is now never lonely, participates in so many outings and events, her life has been enriched by moving to the Redwoods!

I recently helped two friends - a father and adult son - move into the Redwoods and they have told me over and over how glad they are that I "found it" for them and that it's perfect. 3 or 4 people recommended it before we looked at it, including their friend who's been there for a few years, or we might not have checked it out. They were welcomed wholeheartedly from the first tour with April and the staff has been very helpful, with everything that had to be done before the move and with helping them settle in. I was so happy as this was not the experience we had at the first retirement residence we looked into. Their 2-bedroom apartment is larger than others we looked at. Contrary to the comment made by one reviewer, being on the 16th floor, it has a wonderful view of the Ottawa River and the Gatineau Hills, something the son really wanted. They've had only good things to say about the meals, social activities and everyone they've interacted with - staff and residents. Very thankful that we found a great place for them.

My wife and I have been happy living at the Redwoods for over four years. The staff take excellent care of the residents. Each staff member always seems pleased when asked to do a service. The dining facilities are very good. The meals are usually excellent. There are choices at every meal and the menus are varied. During the blackout of Ottawa the staff made great efforts to ensure the residents were looked after. Meals were served in the apartments. Nobody went hungry. The managers joined other staff working many hours overtime to ensure the best possible service to the residents. The distant view from our apartment is excellent. We like to watch the sail boats in the Ottawa River in summer. Looking in the other direction we can see the buildings downtown. Our apartment is about 950 square feet - larger than apartments in other retirements homes we have seen.
