We have investigated a lot of assisted living options in New York and New Jersey and we would like to give a shout out to Andre Bongiorno, the Director of Community Relations at 305 West End. She has given generously of her time and explained all we need to know to choose our next home which is likely to be 305 West End, based on our experience of the food, residents, amenities and ANDRE!

When my sister moved to 305 three years ago she first noticed the superb quality of the food and the stimulating variety of daily activities - from Tai Chi to acrylic paining classes. But the backbone and heart of 305 is the exceptional staff who create a cheerful and caring place to live. When my sister - who is a fall risk and needs help showering, -starts singing and cracking jokes, some aides join in and and her day starts with laughter.. The wait staff knows her dietary restrictions as well as I do. The med techs are wonderful as are the housekeeping personnel .The PT and OT therapists are excellent. They are contractors permanently assigned to 305's gym with its first class equipment. They have helped her balance and boosted her self-confidence. I can't say enough good things about the Wellness Director. I am very hands-on and visit a lot. When there is a problem with meds or my sister's care -- and there have been several serious issues - she is quick to resolve them. She is a calm, very capable presence. In short, my sister feels she has an extended family around her.

My mother moved into 305 West End Avenue Assisted Living a little over a month ago and we are very happy with our decision to choose 305. The building, common areas and residents’ rooms are very well maintained, clean, bright and fresh. There is quite a lot of programming, daily stuff and special events, outings, interesting presentations, talks, music. My mother often goes to watch a film after dinner at the in-house theater (just a large room but well fit out with theater-type seating). Popcorn is served. The staff, really everyone I’ve encountered from the Executive Directors to the Community Relations Directors who introduced us to 305 to the wellness team, and all the many caregivers have consistently been just pleasant, caring people. Location is great too - West End Avenue is elegantly quiet, but a block away you have the action on Broadway and a block the other way is the green serenity of Riverside Park. And last but not least, the residents themselves seem to be a nice bunch of people, a community. So for me and my mom, so far so good! Four stars rather than five only because we’re so new on the scene and still settling in. We’re very happy!

Staff (notably Andre and Drew) went the extra mile, staying late to show us around and remaining patient and flexible as our process had a number of false starts, twists and turns. Would definitely recommend 305 for attentive staff, good accommodations and great location on the Upper West Side.

I thought long and hard about whether or not to post a review; I honestly am so happy to never have to be involved with this place again. I moved my 86 year old mother, who has a Traumatic Brain Injury, in January of 2023. I live out of state, and my mom’s Live-In caregiver of 14 years was dying of cancer. I moved mom out last week and feel a profound sense of relief. Full disclosure: I have had no previous experience with an Assisted Living Facility, and now NEVER again. I was quoted $14,000 per month for rent and Care Services. Within 1 year, that cost was up to $17,000 per month. Within 6 months or so, it topped $20,000“a combination of two rate increases and management telling me she needed more care. What made it worse was NO consistency of care, apathy from Case Manager and insufficient follow-up/follow-through from nurse and wellness staff. They sell you a story about them taking responsibility for your loved one’s care. I had to stay on top of them for EVERYTHING, from housekeeping protocol to repeated lost laundry, to follow-up urine test after courses of antibiotics for repeated UTI (caused by a male resident who was visiting my mother at night, which some of staff knew but never told me) to Podiatrist appointments that never happened. My mother gained 10 pounds in the first 6 months, and they could not come up with any way to have a low calorie diet or some other way to assist with this. There were some kind staff members who made an effort with my mom, who has no short -term memory but does not need Memory Care. But overall, the staff were so inconsistent and more interested in socializing with each other. I blame Very poor training and oversight. Also, her last week there we ordered pizza delivered and ate in the Bistro area. I filled 2 glasses from an unmarked container that I thought was water, only to find out that it was an ALCOHOLIC beverage. Neither the staff in the dining room, nor the reception desk could confirm ,when I asked, that there was alcohol in the beverage out on the counter. The response was ..could be, but I’m not sure. No one was monitoring it. Finally, as I fully expected, they are not returning our Security Deposit saying that they need to replace the carpet; no effort to clean it, no effort to replace only the part that was stained. Money and profit is what management cares about. Perhaps if your loved one can advocate for themself it might be o.k. But I would never recommend this place to anyone.

I moved my father into the memory care unit at 305 West End last week. The degree of hospitality, attentiveness and professionalism has been incredible. I came into the move with high expectations based on research, our guest visit and the outstanding initial presentation and maintenance of the facility. Those expectations have immediately been surpassed. The staff is energetic, compassionate and caring, top to bottom. I feel fortunate that we chose 305 preferential to the other good places we researched.

My experience with 305 West End Assisted Living has been nothing short of exceptional, and I have to give a huge shoutout to the nursing team. They are truly the heart of this community”caring, professional, and always going above and beyond to ensure residents feel safe, comfortable, and well cared for. From the moment you walk in, you can see the dedication and compassion they bring to their work. They take the time to truly connect with residents, treating them like family rather than just patients. Their attention to detail, kindness, and patience create a warm and reassuring environment, which is so important for both residents and their loved ones. I can’t say enough about the level of care they provide”it’s rare to find a team that combines skill with such genuine warmth. If you’re looking for a place where your loved one will be in the best hands, 305 West End Assisted Living is the place to be.

We have been thrilled with how the staff has helped my father acclimate to his new home. The staff's warmth, patience, and responsiveness have truly been remarkable. The programming director has created a roster of activities that are diverse, well-planned, and very engaging. Every morning my father looks forward to starting his day with the one of the group exercise classes, and taking a walk along the wide, peaceful sidewalks that surround 305 WEA and lead to Riverside Park. Dad has also expanded his horizons, learning acrylic painting, something he has never done before and found he really enjoys. He's also been able to continue pursuing his long held interests in politics, travel, and reading by participating in 305's current events group, lectures, and book club. Monthly trips provide Dad a change of scenery and a chance to explore parts of New York he hasn't seen before. Dad's photos from a recent trip to Wave Hill were so beautiful that my hisband and I are adding the park to our list of places to go. Last week was Dad's 93rd birthday, and the staff went out of its way to help my father celebrate at a dinner in the private dining room, with our family and two new friends he met at 305. These new friendships and experiences have confirmed for us that we made the right decison in choosing 305 WEA for my father.

Thank you 305! It is exceptionally challenging for family to consider assisted living for a loved one. Take it from me, I know. This is our second return to 305 East End AL. There is no other place we would be. My husband has had various serious (life-threatening) ailments over the last few years, necessitating consistently competent, professional care in an environment our family did not have the skills to provide. Not only did 305 welcome him with open arms but with professional attention and in the environment he needed. Most importantly, they gave him compassion, consideration to every detail, and love. Everyone on staff is top notch: capable, conscientious, and caring. It’s their vocation. They want to be there, part of this loving community, and it shows. Andre and the staff were outstanding: attentive, concerned, competent and compassionate. I cannot express my gratitude adequately. 305 was our home away from home for a time, and we are grateful for their professionalism, competence, and care. Mostly, for their love.

My husband lived for two years at 305 West End Avenue Assisted Living. I am deeply grateful for the loving and competent care he received. I chose 305 AL after checking several places in the neighborhood, as I wanted to be able to walk from home. The 14 story building is old but just completing a full renovation. My husband lived on one of the two dementia floors. Here, each of the up to 20 residents on the floor has a small studio apartment along two corridors. Residents share a dining room and common room. The facility is jaw-droppingly expensive, even compared to other luxury assisted living places, but that’s mainly due to the location on Manhattan’s now fashionable Upper West Side. 305 AL is part of the Bristal chain of for-profit assisted living facilities based on Long Island. I was apprehensive at first because I had had a bad experience with a similar luxury assisted living place in Washington DC, where my mom lived from 2014 until her death in 2020. While outwardly elegant, the place cut corners where it didn’t show, especially on night staff. On her second night, a staff person dropped my mom against the bed, tearing a big piece of skin off her leg. Despite multiple complaints from residents’ families, the woman wasn’t fired until she broke a resident’s arm while yanking her out of bed. I understand that ill-trained, over-worked and under-supervised staff is a common problem at even the most-expensive facilities. I witnessed only one staff problem at 305: an aide who started yelling at demented residents. She was dismissed within days. Caring for demented residents requires skill, patience, and a good sense of humor. The 305 staff have these qualities in abundance. I noticed almost no staff turnover, a good sign. While my husband is usually a friendly outgoing person, staff sometimes had to dodge his punches when they changed his diapers. The food is excellent (I often ate my husband’s leftovers). Mealtimes were a cheerful circus as staff laughed, helped and encouraged residents with their meals, often with a hug and I love you. Rooms are cleaned and linen changed daily; laundry twice a week. Residents have scheduled activities during the day, including exercises and live performances by musicians. They also go on walks to nearby Riverside Park and bus excursions as they are able. There are always nurses available in an emergency. There were some problems: My husband’s clothes often disappeared in the laundry, probably delivered to the wrong apartment. For a long time, the streaming didn’t work properly in the common room TV. Meals often came upstairs late. Sundays were sometimes seriously short-staffed. I reluctantly brought my husband home because he now needs around-the-clock aides. I could not afford the assisted living charges on top of the aides. While it’s good to have him home, I feel sad we’ve lost our home away from home at 305. I also feel sad that such excellent care is available to only a small minority of elderly or disabled Americans.

I’d like to take a moment and tell you my experience with 305 West End Ave. My mother is in the middle throes of Alzheimer’s dementia. She has basically no short term memory but is otherwise largely capable of handling other day to day things. Nevertheless, six weeks ago, it was time to get her into a memory care unit as functioning at home was not keeping her busy enough to be happy. We were referred to Nancy Hays at 305 by Urban Eldercare (Nancy and Tony). I could not be happier. First, the location is easily accessible. Second, the staff “ from the front desk (Patrick, Osman, and JC) to the sixth floor (Nancy, Karine, and her team). They know who you are and communicate how she is doing. My weekly visits and four or five calls during the week are well received, directed to her quickly, and when I have requests or need more information the team there handles them quickly and satisfactorily. Third, the place is beautiful. When I was reading other more negative reviews it seemed that they had a renovation a year or so ago, but right now you feel like you are entering a hotel and it is nicely kept up. Hope this helps your decision, and I’ll continue to update this review every few months. Good luck. March 2021 It has been about 3-4 months since my mother moved to the Reflections at 305 and I want to update you on the transition . The transition is of course difficult as she had to learn new routine’s and remembering them is a challenge with Alzheimersthat said, Nancy Sondag and Colleen Curran (and I suspect all the staff) have been incredibly patient and have gone above and beyond. Nancy has supported her with honesty about her short term memory and yet her outstanding ability to participate in the community discussions and events. She also prompted that they keep a record for her so she can refer to it and see she is doing things and people have not forgotten about her. I have taken this tack now as it really helps her understand why 305 is the best place and that she is engaged, welcomed and appreciated there. Colleen has gone out of her way to help me get her former professional colleagues into zoom gatherings, and now she has at least three of these a month with different groups. It is the time I see her smile the most and the thoughtfulness putting it together and continuing it is incredible. Additionally, she arranged a once a week FaceTime visit in addition to the daily calls and weekly visit I make. Finally, 305 instituted a way to send pictures to residents and quick noteswhich I haven’t yet tried, but it shows forward technologically adept thinking and personally I appreciate that as this shows it is not a warehouse. And of course the guardians at the gate... Osman, Jaycee and everyone have been most helpful getting me up to speed, arranging my visits and other activities for her. The bottom line is that they continue to perform above and beyond and I safely recommend it.

My family and I were making the difficult decision of finding a place to move our mother who needed assisted living. While we debated keeping her in NY or moving her out of state, Nancy and the staff at 305 were amazingly helpful, supportive and comforting to us as we navigated our way through the process. In the end we decided to move our mother closer to us, however had we kept her in NY there is no doubt that 305 West End would have been her new home. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a "family" of people to help with your loved one.
