After an adjustment we love birch heights! Originally we were in a one bedroom apartment and we had the opportunity to move into a two bedroom! Love the two bedroom! It’s so spacious and bright with a lot of natural lighting.

I love it here. I’ve been here a little over three years and everything is going really well! I love the staff, it’s more like a family than anything.

hallways and elevator need housekeeping - until I spoke to a staff member the elevator was a germ factory - should be cleaned thoroughly once a week! Dinner this evening left a lot to be desired - chicken club sandwich consisted of one slice of micro-thin processed chicken, stale bread, undercooked bacon and a slice of cheese with the paper still attached. Kitchen staff must be asleep! Staff is pleasant but do not follow thru on some requests. I will give the dining room servers a thumbs up - they are great!

The food is above par from our local cooking in former house....more healthy and ample amounts....salads w/every lunch and soup w/every dinner. Breakfast offers abundant choices and is the best meal of the day....this writer's opinion. Love our apt. Thought I'd miss the big house on Lake Winnepesaukee, but have not. Lifestyle definitely different, but we adjusted right away. Lots to keep you busy. My cat even loves it here in Derry, NH. Affordable compared to other sites we searched for a year. Highly recommended.

The facility is extremely clean and bright with designated areas for activities such as crafting, bingo, exercise, movie nights, religious services, dining, corn hole, jig saw puzzling, choral group, etc. The staff treats everyone - residents and family of residents - like family. They know you by name when you walk into the lobby. The management staff is accessible and responsive. My family member has been at this facility for 9 months and loves it. She is so excited to participate in indoor activities as well as the many coordinated external field trips / activities.

Birch Heights is everything I need. I have a really bad back and preparing meals, vacuuming, and changing my bed causes me great distress. The people are friendly I enjoy my time with them. Birch Heights works well for me

Many things have changed in the 8 years that I have lived here and not for the good. The activities used to be on the back of the daily menus which served us well for reminders. During snow storms the staff would clear off our cars and move them for us. Before the renovations we had prints of the classic artwork up and down every hall in beautiful wooded frames. Now it is all abstract modern art in cheap frames. The new carpeting that was installed in strips is not staying adheard to floor, where we have so many walkers and wheel chairs this was not a well thought out plan. Although I like all the staff, I feel they are all over worked, need more support, the staff quantity minimum needs to be increased along with there rates of pay. Considering our yearly rental increase, this should easily be accommodated.

I have only been here a couple of weeks, however my experience had been pretty good. Living among so many other friendly people is far better then how I was living alone. The food and the activities have been great for me to socialize and meet other residents.

Due to my progressive disability, I felt if was time to sell my home and move into an independent living community for assistance with daily tasks. Birch Heights has met my needs.
October 2025
At the age of 83yrs. and having lived in my own home for over 28 years the decision to have to sell my home and move into independent living facility was very difficult. Having visited a number of facilities and not too happy for a number of reasons, I was referred to Birch Heights by my realtor/friend. It was the best visit (virtual) I had and all aspects that were important to me (location, atmosphere, what is included in monthly charge, etc.). I made the decision "sight unseen" and have been very happy that I did. All staff that I have interacted with (administration, facilities management, housekeeping) are very friendly and most accommodating. Activities are well prepared including in-house activities and outings. I recommend giving Birch Heights a serious consideration when looking for "that right place" to retire. Respectfully submitted, Lydia Stavrinos

Staff is wonderful. Building and rooms are clean. Lots of closet space, some have balconies, grounds are kept neat. 3 meals a day, food is good.

My Mother has resided at Holiday Birch Heights for 5 months now. We are extremely pleased with the friendly staff and the cleanliness of this facility. There are many activities that get the residents involved, including Bingo , movies and many other entertaining activities. There is always something going one to keep the residents engaged with being social. We feel confident and at ease to know that she is in calm caring and friendly environment.

My mother has lived here for over 6 years now, and I visit her frequently. The place is always clean, the staff is extremely friendly and helpful. With the recent updates to the common areas it has become brighter and more cheerful. I am very happy that my mother has adapted to living here and hope that she can continue to live here for more years. Also the Manager allowed us to throw a surprise party for my mother in the activity room.

They take good care of my great grandmother!

My mother has been a resident here for 12 months. She is very happy and has had no complaints. Staff and management is very attentive, know all the residents and offer a great environment for independent living. I have no worries about her safety and well-being.

The quality of services at Birch Heights has declined markedly over the last several months. In previous months & before, meal services regularly involved 4 servers. It is now currently (often) down to as few as 2 servers. Consequently, residents who are last to be served can wait as long as a solid hour prior to them being served. The issue (largely) is that it is difficult for the facility to find additional help. Likely (us residents don't know with certainty) staff salaries have not increased sufficiently (if at all) to attract more help. Yet, the corporation (Atria) just announced a multimillion dollar refurbishment of the facility (all new carpeting, repainting of all walls, replacement of paintings, & more facilities renovations.) They (sheepishly) announced that there would be construction disruptions for about 4 months that would involve noise, closures of various community sections (including rec. room, game room, etc.) & other inconveniences of the building. Yet evidently no new monies for staff salaries is included (as was stated by Atria staff...not part of the project!) Much more of the quality of this facility has denigrated in the last 1 to 2 years. You can do much better than here with the current declining services & especially given that the costs for most rooms here are well over $5,000. a month!

Beautiful facility, hair-dresser is nice, cleaners are great, food is good. The value wasn’t there for us. It was the least expensive option we could find around and should have known something was fishy. I asked during leasing process about annual rent increase and they assured me verbally no major increases incremental if anything. I would estimate that in 5 years my relative was staying there, the rent went up 9% annually! So eventually we (and many others) couldn’t afford it anymore and went through the very unfortunate circumstance of having to uproot relative AGAIN. The cost is a total bait and switch. Then after the move Birch Heights said my relative could have security deposit back but it’s been 3 months and still a check in the mail story. I don’t know if they are short on money and robbing peter to pay paul. The other big thing about value we didn’t realize is we were thinking this is worth it because of the food being included. Elderly people tend to eat lightly and my relative did not want to do a sit down restaurant everyday never mind 3 times per day. So at best they would go down once per day but they didn’t always want to and was forced to. Getting dressed, socializing “ just to get a sandwich. They have no pick-up option to bring it back to their room. They charge 5 dollars to delivery from inside the building and my relative said it was frown upon to ask for it. So we ended up having to buy groceries all the time anyways. If your relative is still fairly independent and not super social “ it would have been less expensive to do a meal service and a private cleaner in another complex that has similar amenities.

My wife and I toured the facility last week and found the staff and residents friendly. The apartments, dining room and public areas were clean and well-cared for in our estimation. As Jennifer showed us around the building, we could see ourselves living there. We give our experience an excellent assessment.

We moved in one week ago with the help of our family. Our new bed arrived and it really fits in our bedroom. We are finding our way around the area, but we hardly have any time to leave our facility! Will send pictures when we have all of our furniture in place. We love it here!

We moved our elderly parents here in November 2015 and they were quite happy at first. My father then passed away in March of 2016 and we were very grateful my mother had the folks at Birch Heights to help her out. Over the past nine months, all my mother does is complain about the food, "corporate," and the constant turn-over of staff. They have had new managers every few months, which tells me the corporation is not taking good care of its employees. The food has gone from bad to worse, and the new residents moving in are not independent AT ALL! The anxiety this has produced for my mother is very concerning, and we are now looking for an alternative. When talking to the senior housing consultant, I learned there have been very similar concerns and complaints from other residents. Holiday Retirement-if you want to run an exceptional facility, then I suggest treating your employers better and go visit and speak with your tenants.
January 2017
The facility is kept up nice however it is not gourmet food as advertised.
June 2012
The facilities are beautiful, and kept up very nicely. The place was a little pricey but we felt it was a safe environment for our mother, however the price went up every year. The food continued to go down hill, until it become intolerable. Spending extra money on food every week. We were told that the place was for independent living, yet the majority of people are using walkers or those motorized carts and age wise, are 80+. The wait for the one elevator at meal time is ridiculous. Needless to say our mother has moved out and is happily living on her own.
