Reviews The Orchards at Canterbury-on-the-Lake
August 2026
This place is disgusting, it stinks when you walk onto a floor 90% of the time, and the care you get is minimal. You are showered only twice a week and lucky if that even happens. The food I wouldn't feed to my dog! My sister has been there over a year, and now she has been sick for going on a month. Her hair or mouth hasn't been cleaned once. she hasn't eaten more than a spoon full of food and yesterday they brought her Mac and Cheese with ham chopped up in it just left the tray by her bed and walked out, I wish I could post a video of how she looks, they know she has not been eating and couldn't feed herself if she wanted to but they don't care they dump the tray and leave it's a joke. The food in there is awful anyway. I wouldn't put my worst enemy in that place! Before you even think of putting a loved one in a nursing home do your homework. I'm sure most are all about the same.

My wife was in the Pavilion for 3 weeks after she had surgery. She received excellent care from everyone there. The therapists have her walking again. All the nurses and aides were extremely attentive. Food service was very good. Everyone from management on down worked as a team. All our thanks to everyone involved.

Overall, The Orchards is a great Rehab facility. Taylor is one of the best CNA's I've had. She is always helpful, joyful, and attentive. She hooks you up with the best snacks and drinks. Garrett, Shawna, Joanna, and Russell are the best therapists I've ever had. I've been able to improve and become stronger under their guidance. There are issues with the kitchen staff, but if you're attentive and assertive you will be fine.

I highly recommend Canterbury On The Lake Nursing Home Rehabilitation. I came to Canterbury March, 2026 with ALL my lower extremities broken (both legs, knees and ankle) and I was none weight baring. It is now 2 months later and I can independently do everything for myself. I am up walking again. I am VERY GRATEFUL and THANKFUL for ALL the WONDERFUL STAFF that helped me along this journey. I had a great experience during my short stay in the Pavillion. The staff were caring and attentive. Therapy team got me up and moving my first day. The DON was kind and courteous and her team worked very hard at meeting my needs. I would highly recommend.
May 2026
I've been a patient now I Canterbury on the lake for about 2 weeks I believe that all the staff and nurses are pretty cool especially physical therapy however today like most days one of my favorite aides came in her name is Taylor, when I say it just a matter of her taking two seconds to talk to me or to make sure that I have my apple juice cuz she knows I like it or anything just having compassion and she always answer my light quickly she makes me feel like I'm a human and I just obligation or annoyance she always seems to maked e me laugh her little jokes and she just makes my day better like today not feeling good she got my juice helped me get propped up. The aides TRULY make a difference here especially when your bedridden like me. So thanks to all the staff but especially TAYLOR helping making the healing process just a lil better.
May 2026
No longer a non-profit changed to for profit last year. Staff shortages so if you cant get out of bed yourself you won't be happy. Check the Medicare site for the rehab rating.

A Wonderful Place for My Mom — Highly Recommend I am extremely happy that I chose The Orchards at Canterbury-on-the-Lake for my mom. Moving a parent from their longtime home is never easy, but this community has made the transition far smoother and more comforting than I could have hoped for. Her room in the Southminster building is very pleasant — it's a great size, includes a nice kitchen, and has a beautiful view of the trees and water. The updated finishes help it feel like a real home rather than a facility, which is incredibly important for seniors transitioning from living independently for most of their lives. There are multiple daily activities and outings, which keep residents engaged and active. The dining experience is also excellent — residents can order by phone and have meals delivered directly to their room at no additional cost. The food quality is generally very good, and this convenience makes a big difference. What truly sets this place apart, though, is the staff. Every employee I've encountered has been willing to go out of their way to help both residents and family members. It's clear they genuinely care about the residents' happiness and well-being. While everyone has been wonderful, I want to give a special thank you to Shannon, Jammie, and Debbie — their kindness and dedication have meant a great deal to our family. Another major benefit is having skilled nursing care under the same roof. When my mom was hospitalized and needed time in the nursing home for recovery, I was able to bring her back to her Southminster room regularly so she could feel at home again and spend time with her grandson. That continuity made a difficult time much easier for all of us. Overall, this has been a fantastic experience. If you're looking for a warm, caring, and comfortable community for a loved one, I highly recommend The Orchards at Canterbury-on-the-Lake.

It was a great pleasure residing at The Orchards at Canterbury on the Lake for a short period of time, completing rehabilitation for my total knee replacement. It was a great pleasure meeting Q. She made my stay at Canterbury very comfortable. She was there to answer all questions and went beyond and above to see that my stay was pleasent. From Adminastative to Nursing, Physical Therapy, Social Work, Activity Department, and etc, were very nice, professional, and always willing to help. All the staff at The Orchards at Canterbury on the Lake were fantastic. I had staff members that were willing to go the extra mile to make sure my stay was very comfortable with no worries. I would like to give a special thanks to Q, Natalie, Ben, Aniya R, Lynette, Marqueta, Garrette, Rachel, and etc from Physical Therapy. The Orchards at Canterbury on the Lake is a very nice facility.

The Orchards at Canterbury-On-The-Lake is a beautiful campus with numerous levels of care and facilities to fulfill the needs for yourself or a loved one. As a Hospice/Home Health Care representative, I have visited and/or worked with a majority of the skilled nursing, assisted living, and memory care facilities throughout the tri-county area and Canterbury has always been a standout for me. I can truly say, Canterbury and their staff make this a place that feels like home in a well maintained property that excels at cleanliness while providing an extremely high level of care. I consistently recommend Canterbury to friends, family, or acquaintances looking for some guidance on next steps for placement.
October 2025
I have had many family members at The Orchards at Canterbury on the Lake since it opened in 1994. The Independent Living area (Southminster) has been a wonderful home for 7 of them. The beautiful outdoor and indoor surroundings, friendly and caring staff, numerous recreational activities, and parties have all contributed to the overall family atmosphere that exists when you walk in the door. I have had one family member live in the assisted living area (Leas) and she was given compassionate care. Another family member is going to be living there soon and I expect the same level of care and support will be provided as was years ago. Shannon has been extremely helpful in guiding us through the process. The ability to transition from one level of care under one roof throughout the entire community is a tremendous benefit for those families that have spouses and wish to visit them without going outside. Additionally, the ease of renting your apartment and not purchasing it allows greater freedom, flexibility and affordability in the senior retirement community. One day I may find myself enjoying it as a resident.
October 2025
The staff at Canterbury demonstrate a high level of professionalism and genuine care, consistently prioritizing the well-being of their residents. The long-term residency of many individuals is a testament to the welcoming and supportive environment that Canterbury fosters.
October 2025
Shannon and the Canterbury staff are awesome. The facility is always super clean, the food smells fantastic, and they are heavily involved in the surrounding community. I refer people and their loved ones here every opportunity I have.

I spoke to Mary in admissions about placing my loved one here. She was very kind and supportive when I was overwhelmed. She took the time to explain the process to me and even helped me with questions I had after my loved one was placed here. I highly recommend working with her.

August 2025
cannot recommend Canterbury on the Lake Rehab based on my family’s recent experience with the care my 81-year-old father received. The level of attention and professionalism was shockingly inadequate. Call bells went unanswered for an average of an hour, which meant my father was left waiting for basic care. Because of this, our family had to create rotating shifts to ensure his soiled clothing was changed in a timely manner. There was no doctor on call. When my father became severely dehydrated, it took two full hours before we were able to get a response from a physician. This delay was completely unacceptable and dangerous. The facility itself was unclean. The carpets were filthy, creating an overall environment that did not feel sanitary or safe. Nutrition was not handled properly. We had to argue with the food service staff to make sure my father was given the diabetic diet that was prescribed for his health. This experience has left our family deeply disappointed and concerned for others who may not have family members available to step in. Patients deserve dignity, timely care, and safe conditions — none of which were consistently provided here.
August 2025
I have a family member there right now and she has been treated like crap. This is in the short term rehab. Luckily she’ll be coming home soon or else I’d move her because she hits her call button numerous times with no help, often has to track staff down for her meds, won’t see any staff for hours, food is always cold when served, she’s barely eaten since being there. On one occasion she was served an orange juice with dinner that was 1/3 full. She was also given a Boost that expired several months ago but luckily she caught it. She tells me there are a few staff that she can tell care about the patients but most of them don’t even look at her or treat her with respect. The whole place smells of urine and seems unclean. This is only the short term rehab part, we’ve had good experiences with the senior living part.
August 2025
Canterbury provides care to my father. They were compassionate and respectful even on difficult days. I appreciate the entire team.
June 2025
A legal document should mean something. A tenant is certainly held to the terms of a lease. My father was a long-standing member of the Canterbury community. After his passing, month after month, my inquiries regarding the return of his security deposit were ignored. Once it was determined that the funds should not have been held due to a "possible bill for the storage of his body from the coroner's office," expediting the check was fully expected, especially since there is no provision for this action in the lease terms. The amount of the check, the estate name, and the mailing address were confirmed mid-April, yet still no return of the deposit. Meanwhile, his estate remains unsettled. It's hoped this does not happen to other "valued members" of the Canterbury community or their families. The Gene & Virginia Waye Family

I have visited my mom here recently and I feel like the staff I've met working with her these past couple of Saturdays were excellent. My mom was happy, her nurse (I think she was the nurse) Minnie was very uplifting and patient as was the other staff I met. Thank you ladies on the second floor for taking such good care of my mom
December 2024
My mother has stayed at this facility twice for rehab services. The staff did an excellent job, especially Ashley and Nadia. The facility is very clean and does not have that…smell…like many other facilities we have been to. The food is also much better than other places. The admissions staff did a great job securing insurance coverage and informed us regularly of my mom’s insurance eligibility for coverage. Overall, the staff seem to really like working there , most seem to be having a good time at work and care about the patients, including my mother Sharlot.

Melissa Klingler is Totally Awesome, you need more of her ! From day one she has helped me with every need I have. Helpful, pleasant, smiles, patient and Gentle. Doesn't leave you on the pot forever after you alert that your done. Comes within 5 to 8 minutes when u push your call button. Unlike others that you wait over 45 minutes for. Doesn't rush off, she makes sure your comfy and needs are met. You can tell she cares about you. I'm sure she probably isn't making what you should be paying her ! This woman is a Golden Blessing ! I am Thankful every day that she is here.

Melissa Klingler very helpful and compassionate with residents I am truly grateful for as my hall partner. Truly a Superstar!!

Just love Canterbury on the Lake, my mom has resided in both the assisted living (the Leas) and the memory care (the Meadows). Both communities have so many activities to keep the residents engaged. The caregivers are kind and are very approachable as is the management, and are quick to respond and help through the changing times.

We are happy to write a review for Canterbury on the Lake’s Independent Living Facility! First of all, everyone, including all the residents and staff, has been friendly and accommodating. We can hardly believe our good fortune at selecting Canterbury especially after visiting many other facilities. In the mornings, we take a walk around Canterbury’s beautiful campus before most folks wake up! We usually go around twice which is about a mile and during these walks we have seen deer, rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, cranes, and other varieties of birds who pay us little attention! There is also a small lake in the near distance. Our apartment, with its “open floor plan”, is perfect for us too…with one bedroom, bathroom with a walk-in shower, living and dining room and also a den. We have “converted” the den into our office which is spacious enough for both of our desks and computers. As avid readers, we are thrilled to have so many books at our disposal here at Canterbury’s library. In addition, the Waterford Public Library is nearby and will deliver books if requested. We joined the Canterbury Book Club and recently attended their first book talk. However, the best thing about Canterbury for us, is that we don’t need to cook anymore as each afternoon we go to the dining room for a meal! Canterbury also offers a once-a-week “happy hour” where wine and snacks are provided which is a great way to socialize with our neighbors. Amazingly, we can also make an appointment to get our hair and a pedicure done by simply going to the salon downstairs. We have utilized both of these services and were very satisfied. There is also a wellness center and work-out room available for all residents. Canterbury also offers drivers who can take us to medical appointments and other places for a small fee. We have kept our car for the time being although we could easily survive here without it. We check the activity schedule periodically and have attended three excellent concerts off campus. Canterbury has a bus and has taken any of us who signed up. Many of these concerts are free as is Canterbury's ride. Additionally, Canterbury also offers many other outings with enough variety to please everyone. We are so glad we moved here...

When they transferred my Dad from the hospital it was on the weekend and maybe they were short staffed but he was pushed in his room nothing hooked up to call for help no lights were on so he was in the dark and no phone hooked up so I take care of that ordered him something to eat and warm blankets. Most of the staff were friendly and I believe that did the best they could but my issue is with the social worker this young woman’s poor attitude and how she addressed my father upset me and I had to get this off my chest because I don’t want her nasty attitude to prevail. I suggest that if you have loved ones in this facility please go check on them everyday make sure you speak with the dietitian about the things they like to eat and if help is needed to eat. Get to know who is helping your love one daily because it changes work with the staff for a great stay for your loved one. My father has passed away now but I’ll never forget how I found him that day with no means of getting help and in the dark. I saw you response and I’ll call ASAP because after all this time it still bothers me.

My mother-in-law was recently admitted for rehabilitation services at Canterbury. She is now being moved to the assisted living facility. The staff has been extremely helpful throughout this process. We have been very happy with the care shown to her and the guidance provided to us during this difficult period.

My son needed a rehabilitation facility for several weeks after an accident before going home. Canterbury was a very good fit for us! The staff was very caring, friendly, and professional. The atmosphere was relaxed and positive. I spent most of my days there with him so I had a lot of time to observe the interactions of the patients, staff, administration, and families. I saw teamwork, support and caring for each other, and many small kindnesses and smiles each day. Yes, there were a few snags and delays, but overall we both were very, very glad to have Caterbury as our temporary home.
