I moved into Lorien Encore three months ago. During the previous 18 months I had been living in another assisted living facility elsewhere ln Ellicott City. The experience of the last 90 days has proved to be a significant improvement in the care I have received. At the previous venue they were so short staffed that it often was 45 minutes an hour before staff would respond to a request for service at Lorien is usually within 20 minutes [with an exception at times of shift changes]9. The quality of staff is also exceptional. I include in my hall of fame’, people like aides Phe and Rosa, who are training the next generation of caregivers. The food is institutional but is quite good for institutional meals. The desserts for lunch and dinner are the highlights of every meal so I can’t recommend this place to diabetics or people looking to lose weight but the chocolate Oreo pie is truly worth splurging on. The final criteria in my evaluation is the training of the staff working with Parkinson’s patients. At the previous facility I could not trust the staff to be sensitive to the timing of medications that is so critical to those with Parkinson’s disease. I self medicated. Here I was sufficiently confident in the med tech team to turn over that function to them. This Lorien facility has special certification in Parkinson’s care and has a director of Parkinson’s programs. This includes at least five days per week of exercise. This is consistently presented in a way that inspires participation even by those of us who have avoided working out for more than 60 years. I attribute some improvements in my health to the move to Lorien. ..

My mom has 3 people left in this world. Her last days could be very lonely for her, but there are some staff members that really shine every day and bring a lot of joy to her. Three people that especially stick out in my mind are the CNA’s on day shift, Alex, George, and Rani. They treat her as if she were their family member. They shower her with so much special attention and love. She feels like a queen when they interact with her. They make it a point to stop any interaction with her whenever they see her. She told me they are such great people and they are always there for her. She never feels like she is alone when they are around, they feel like they are her family. It’s nice for me to know that when I’m not here to be with her, there are people like them, and others, that are taking time to show her a lot of kindness. I do have great concerns on a whole for the nursing home care. They are continually under staffed, which leaves the residents waiting for long periods of time when they are in great need of help. They rarely seem to have enough nurse’s aides to cover the patient care demands. During meal times in the dining room, there are more residents that need to be spoon fed, than there are nurse’s aides to feed them. The facility is very nice and clean and considered to be one of the good nursing homes, but they have the same issues as all of the other facilities that are considered not so good, they are understaffed.

A family member was recently a patient in sub-acute rehab at Lorien Encore in Turf Valley. We had a super positive experience with the social work coordinator Judy Dixon-Lloyd. She worked thoughtfully and diligently to facilitate superb discharge planning. As is often the case, the perspectives of the patient, the PT/OT staff, and the family do not align, and she skillfully managed this to put together a plan acceptable to all parties. We appreciate the time, energy and communication skills it took to make that happen!

We were fortunate to place my elderly Mother at Lorien-Encore at Turf Valley for rehab following a hospital stay to help her regain strength to return home. The facility is bright and welcoming, and the food is of decent quality. The PT & OT staff and facilities are wonderful- shout out to Gillian & Frederick who really care and know just how much to push their patients without overextending them! The floor staff (nurses and aides) are also exceptional! They are compassionate, caring and provided dignity to promote and encourage healing. A HUGE shout out to DeAnte, Toni, Mela & Kendall, Valentina and Jackie. These folks went above and beyond every single day they were on shift and we are beyond grateful! There are also many activities and social gatherings for residents which is wonderful! Additionally, upon discharge, Judy arranged for home health care to continue - another burden off our plate and so appreciated! If you’re looking for care for a loved one- we HIGHLY recommend Lorien Encore- all facilities in Maryland should emulate their approach for caring for our elders!

No one ever wants to find out they need rehab after a hospital stay, but Lorien Encore has created a climate that exemplifies respect and dignity for every patient on the floor. My mother has been here for six weeks, and our family could not be more grateful for the "home away from home" they provided. The daily care my mother received was nothing short of exceptional. We want to specifically recognize Kendall and Mela, who handled her daily needs with a level of kindness and compassion that went above and beyond. They approached every task with a smile, ensuring she felt safe and cared for while preserving her dignity at all times. Her nurses, Toni and Deante, were equally impressive. Their attention to detail was exceptional, and they addressed every request with a sense of urgency and a "not a bother" attitude that made my mother feel completely at ease. On the rehabilitation side, the therapists Stephanie and Jillian were amazing. They knew exactly when to push her and when to adjust her activities based on her ever-changing medical needs. It was clear they were monitoring her progress with genuine interest. Communication was also a major strength. Judy, the social worker, was fantastic at coordinating care meetings and was always available to answer questions as we navigated the next steps for her discharge. What struck my mother most was how everyone seemed to know her personally. We are so thankful to the ENTIRE team for their professionalism and heart. If you are looking for a facility that treats patients like family, Lorien Encore is the place.

My mother became a resident at this facility in January 2020 . on the LTC side. Thai is an improvement from her previous facility that was out of state . I see that they have attention to detail and. just like many care facilities there are times when they are short staffed and I can see that the staff is overworked but they do try their best. she is always clean and dressed and seems to be well taken care of. Activity staff to keep her involved, I do come in often to see her and make sure that I take care of some of her other personal needs . the staff is responsive. If you email or call for a question usually someone gets back to you. I had some ongoing concerns and I emailed the director. Within a few days he had the nursing and social work staff follow up with me and the concerns were rectified. The facility is in a nice location.

If you want to put a contract out on a family member; send them here. How can the state of Maryland give a license to these facilities?? The care is terrible. My family member was here for rehab after surgery. The reason I am giving 2 stars is for P.T. which was fairly decent. Nursing staff is horrible. Aides would come into my family members room and go into their bathroom and talk on their cell phones. No one came to answer the call bell and when they did, they yelled at my family member! My family member contracted a UTI while here which they had never before had in their life. Food was cold. Room left dirty for days. Hallways stink. Noise from every radio and TV in patient's rooms at full volume blast all day and night. The place is short staffed, morale is low and the staff let you know it. The pathetic thing is, all nursing facilities in Maryland are like this. No human being deserves to be treated like this. The Office of Healthy Care Quality in Maryland is a contradiction in terms and they need to be audited, investigated and fined for their dismal performance.

I was a patient in Encore’s Rehab for one month for post-surgical care. The staff’s support and care and my PT during my difficult recovery was excellent. In particular, my main nurse was Charmaine, who is an outstanding caretaker. Every morning, she would greet me and ask about how I was feeling, and then she would help me. She would continue to help me throughout the day. Her empathy and compassion is amazing and she was so comforting to me! This kind of compassionate care is exactly what a patient needs at a difficult time like this! Charmaine is the ultimate caretaker - five stars and I would give her a million if I could! My Rehab experience at Encore was excellent and I recommend it to you or your loved one.

Medicare patients going for post surgical rehabilitation in-house care BEWARE! Lorien bills Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) as a Skilled Nursing Care center and not as a rehabilitation Center. Consequently if you expect BCBS to pick up any deductibles after Medicare they don't! You will be liable for 1000's of dollars not paid by Medicare!! They claim that they didn't know this? Right like no one else has ever found out the hard way? And just what skilled nursing care did my wife get? Well when she needed help to get to the toilet the so-called "Skilled Nurses" most often would just call foe an aide to do this as they walked away! Often the aide arrived 20 to 30 minutes after her initial request and long after she soiled herself and her bedding. Oh the nurses did deliver her meds to her, and I guess that takes an RN to do that. And as far as the 5 days a week of both Physical Therapy (PT) and Occupational Therapy (OT) she was supposed to get. The session were often for far less than the requisite 45 minutes, in which they put her on a stationary bike for much of the time while they worked on their laptops. believe they included in the "45" minutes the time it took them to wheel her from her room to their work site. She didn't receive any truly useful PT or OT until she received at home visits two to three times a week by PT's and OTs who spent the time actually being engaged and working with her. Mom really loved the food and the staff. They seemed to like her as well. However, we went to move her out today and under the bed and by her chair, garbage and dirt was piled up. The floor was sticky. So many things were shoved under her bed. It was very obvious that no one had cleaned anywhere near her chair or the bed for a very long time.

This place is immaculate! Always clean and the staff are absolutely friendly. Every time my Grammy has had an issue she’s contacted Jack Hedges and he’s been there for us through thick and thin. To say he’s become like family is an understatement. He’s truly a hard worker and friendly face. You can tell the residents adore him as well as their families. He honestly knows how to get things done with a welcoming and warming manner! Thank you Jack for all you do for my Grammy and everyone else! You truly are spectacular!
