To start off with....when he went to the lockdown facility...they were told he was allergic to the meds that they were giving him that were not authorized by his health care proxy and a court order was obtained. Didn't matter. They were medical professionals. My rights and his rights were ignored. I was called and told he swung a broom at patients and staff. He had never been violent before. I was called and told he was going to jump out the window. That didn't make sense. Then called and told he was swinging a belt with a metal beltbuckle at the staf and patients. Come on now. He's in a lock down facility. Why was a broom left out on the floor. The belt buckle...I can't believe that one. He wasn't allowed shoe laces. Jumping out the window...yeah I can believe that comment. He wants to go home. He hadn't seen family in over a year and he's in his 80's. I would call to talk to him...but no one answered the phone. Then when I was finally allowed a visit...while I was calling his daughter she died. His wife passed a few months before. Because I didn't have the ashes I was refused to see him and tell him. When I was allowed to see him. He had scabies. I went to the nurses station and was given someone elses meds to put on him. No gloves....just cream. I went to see him and a patient came and grabbed me as I walked down the hallway. I stated very loud, "I can't touch you!" No one came to my rescue. I took my step father out for lunch and a hair cut. Brought him back and something happened and punched the man that touched me. They called said they were bringing him to Bay State Medical. I said no I wanted Holyoke Hospital. They refused. Took him to Baystate. I went there. They never told the hospital he had scabies. I did and the people around him were moved. Day Brook Village was told he was allergic to the meds they were given him. One of them caused him to be combative. The other causes halucinations. He has been out of there over a year. He doesn't even make a fist anymore. We are in the process of taking him off the second drug. If the medical staff don't listen to you and they are too busy in their cubical talking on the phone and eating....it's not the place for you. They didn't even care that there had been a court order removing him from those drugs....after he was sent to a special hospital and removed off of them. They started them up again with no reguard to his life. I wouldn't put anyone in Day Brook Village Senior Living.

My review is mixed. My mother, Laura, was a resident at Day Brook Village Nursing (formerly Loomis) for over three years until she died of Covid-19 eighteen days ago. I visited as often as I could. I found the majority of the staff were very qualified and excellent at their jobs. Most of them genuinely cared about my mother and her many needs. My mom had her favorites, because they paid her special attention. Its clear to me, however, that Day Brook management understaffs the facility. In my opinion, too few nurses, nursing aids, and other skilled health care workers are rushing about to bath, dress, deliver meals, allocate prescriptions, and provide compassionate comfort to too many residents. I suspect the upper management of Berkshire Healthcare is trying to balance quality of care with lowering the costs of that care. I think they should put more emphasis on quality of care and not understaff the facility at Day Brook. One last criticism. My siblings and I have to date received very little information about how our mother died. We would like to know if she died alone or if someone held her hand as her lungs filled with fluid. We would like to know if she was in pain or not. We understand that the facility is very busy with this viral crisis. We applaud the heroic efforts of the staff there and understand that they are at risk too. They are brave to show up. But, at a certain point we would like to know these things.

The people are wonderfully caring, the food is excellent, but what surprised me most is the great coordination of care as my mother-in-laws needs changed.
