An elderly relative lived in Oak Woods Manor for several years and thoroughly enjoyed it. He felt at home, made new friends, and eventually passed peacefully in his apartment with hospice nursing care. Thus when one of my parents needed to move to La Porte, Oak Woods was our first choice. We were delighted to see that the building has been well maintained, the staff remain cheerful, responsive, and kind. We've been very pleased with our choice, and have recommended this facility to anyone looking for independent senior living. No facility is perfect, but the staff work very hard to take excellent care of the building and the residents. My parent's apartment is beautiful, roomy but cozy, and well soundproofed. We are encouraged to make it homey by decorating and planting flowers. On-site amenities are terrific, the grounds are beautiful, Chef Tim does an amazing job with meals, and activities are varied and creative. The eclipse party in the summer of 2024 was so much fun! I was glad i dropped in.

After looking at many residences in the La Porte and Michigan City area, our family decided on Oak Woods Manor for my mother for several reasons. My aunt had had a good experience there years ago, and we were familiar with how well-kept and clean the facility is. We also appreciated that the square footage of the apartments was substantially larger than other facilities, with a real kitchenette, a spacious bathroom, and significant closet space. The fact that storage lockers were also available to residents was a plus as mom was downsizing from a 2 BR condominium. Her apartment feels like a 1BR apartment and not a glorified dorm room, and that was important to all of us. But the real selling point was that, the facility itself being desirable, the staff is unfailingly impressive. I state that in the present tense because my mother has been there for seven months now, and I have had firsthand experience with the staff during a visit earlier this year. Oak Woods Manor offers hospitality for friends or family from out of town and even allows visitors to take their meals with the residents in the dining room! I tried not to miss a single meal because the food was delicious! Their chef has experience from several higher end restaurants, and his skills are well above what you might expect in an assisted living residence. Every single staff member I came in contact with had a sense of humor and was helpful, friendly, resourceful, capable, and so kind. From the director, to those at the front desk, to the housekeeping and dining room servers, to maintenance, all are top-notch and willing to accommodate individual needs and requests. I didn't need any reassurances, but on the morning I left for the airport, one of the dining room staff I had seen on many occasions, came to say goodbye. I told her how much I appreciated her attention and patience when mom and I were at lunch and dinner. She then told me that her own mother had lived at Oak Woods, so, she said, "I've been in YOUR position, on the outside. But now, as an employee, I'm on the inside, and I can tell you that the staff here really loves the residents. And it's not that way everywhere." This is what I hear from anyone from anywhere when I describe where my mom is living. "Oh, you are SO lucky!" they tell me. "It sounds like you found a really wonderful place!" And we did, and I'm grateful, and that's why I wanted to write this review. Oak Woods is not the newest facility in the area, but you will be pleased by the light, fresh, spacious appearance of the common areas and the individual rooms. The fact that it's older may account for the apartments being more spacious. It was definitely a plus when we were deciding. I don't know what accounts for the amazing staff, but it's the feature that provides the greatest confidence that my mom is in the best of hands in my absence, and that is the biggest plus of all.

I have visited this community and was quite impressed. The team members were engaging and kind. The residents I met really enjoyed living in the community and commented on how great the services were and how great the team is. Highly recommend this community for anyone looking for senior living in the area.

If your faced with having to find a place for your parents.This is the place.My mother was unsure at first but needed the extra care.Oakwood is so clean the staff is so friendly.Any questions I could go to the director Chuck Kerpec for anything. My mom stayed here for a few years until her final days.I was so worried I was going to have to move her because she needed to be in hospice. I didnt know who to call or what to do.I was just at witts end.I went to tell Chuck I was trying to figure something out.He said I will take care of everything you have the ambulance bring her back here to her home.Sure enough I had a hospital bed hospice was here.The weight that he just lifted off my shoulders was unbelievable. During my mothers final days.The staff was so kind just like they were before all this.Checking on me and mom.I could never thank them for all they did from the first day to our last day.You will never find a better place.More than assisted living trust me

The test is always whether you would recommend a service--Oak Woods is a beautiful environment for senior independent living. Residents are smiling and content, families come and go, seem happy to be visiting. Thats proof positive the staff go out of their way to accomodate! I have been a little disappointed in some things here. Thebulletin board you can hardly read the darn thing. The chalk doesnt show up worth a damn. Chuck get something else so we can read it.. Cant you guys get chocolate ice cream. Why cant we get more bus trips to Michigan City? You have a new bus now what the exse now? I needed some cortizone 10 put on my back for an itch. They cant do that. Is that another rule you guys have here? I guess I have have Leada do that for me. She said shell do it. I cant have anything done without a price. You people say this isnt an assisted living. Why is it listed on the internet it is. You better get it right or its false advertisement.

I have a friend who is a resident at Oak Woods Manor and feel that he is treated respectfully and with a lot of tender loving care. I find the facility to be clean, beautifully decorated and located conveniently in the community. Residents have lots of activities including presentation by community businesses.

I was not ready to move from my home to an independent living Community. When Oak Woods Manor called to tell me a two bedroom apartment was available, I knew Id bitter take it while the taking was good. Im so glad I did. The community areas are attractive and clean, the staff is so friendly and compassionate, the food is very good and there are a variety of activities. Ive made some new delightful friends. I highly recommended that you come see for your self and keep my new home in your plans for the future......I would recommend Oak Woods Manor.

My great grandmother came to oak woods manor in September. Talking her into leaving her home was hard work and gettin her to take the step into even trying out oak woods manor was even worse. Once we got her here... She was very Leary and didnt want to leave her apartment. The staff at oak woods manor made things so welcoming for her. They hosted a fashion show and made my grandmother apart of it...seeing her in this show and how she became so happy was wonderful. That really helped her out of her shell. She started coming down to activities and making friends. Residents and staff here are all so wonderful. The calendar is full of events to fit everyones interests. My grandmother became ill in January and ended up not pulling through... I am however very glad that oak woods manor made the last days she had left very pleasant. She was a very happy lady. I would highly recommend this place!
