It's very hard when you have to make decisions to put your loved one in a nursing home, but the Oaks is so clean with a welcoming atmosphere and a great staff that it makes the decision a little easier.

Ill start by saying that I love The Oaks in Pooler. Heres my story as to why: My Mom was diagnosed with moderate dementia in September, 2019. Although we knew something wasnt quite right with her, she had flat out refused to be tested until she had two sodium tanks and ended up nearly dying in the hospital. The nurses there said to me, Wow, she really has some Sundowners going on, you might want to get that checked, so with that support, we were finally able to get Mom diagnosed. I had no idea it was going to be so bad that we would need to find immediate assistance. And by immediate assistance, I mean an assisted living facility. She could no longer live on her own. Wow. I was completely in shock when I started looking for a place for her. Living with me wasnt an option since I live on a boat, and I just did not have the ability to care for her with all the issues she had. Did I mention Sundowners? That was just one of the things we were dealing with. And if your loved one has dementia, you know exactly what Im talking about. Well, some places we visited were to institutional, some were to expensive, some just didnt have a good feel, and by that I mean the staff just didnt connect with me. And then, I walked into The Oaks. Its a beautiful, warm, sunny, open facility. I saw kids, pets, people, and tons of activity, the place is a beehive! People were laughing, friendly, and having a good time. As I was greeted by Sherri Long and the adorable Oaks mascot, Gracie, at the front door, I honestly knew immediately that this place was different. Sherri gave us a tour and then we had lunch there! Wow again!!!! The food is amazing! The Chefs are top notch, and Ive ate there a lot with Mom over the past few months. I also met Garrett, the Director, that same day. Both Garrett and Sherri sat down with me and answered all my questions. There was no pressure, no aggravation, no hassle, and zero stress. Every question I threw at them, they had an answer. Even when I said that Mom had terrible Sundowners and I was worried she would do something to get herself thrown out, they both assured me that the staff there was equipped to handle that, and Garrett promised me that Mom would be just fine. So, in December, 2019, Mom moved into her new apartment. She immediately needed Physical Therapy, and Oaks has a super PT department, right there in the building! Shannon is absolutely amazing, and she took Mom under her wing, and when the Covid hit, and I had to stop visiting Mom, Shannon would take her out for walks in her wheelchair around the building. I talk to Shannon all the time, and she always gives me updates on how Mom is doing. I did see a couple of complaints that Oaks is short staffed, Id like to just say that I challenge anyone to find a place that is NOT short staffed. Everyone always needs more help. Id ask that people be realistic with that. Has it been a problem? In eight months, not that I have seen. She has never wanted or needed anything that she didnt get. Also, a plus is that Mom is able to see a Nurse Practitioner right there in her apartment! And I have her NPs cell phone number on speed dial, and she responds to my calls. And Ill say the same for her personal nurse at Oaks, Kristy. She is incredibly sweet and always answers my phone calls, or responds as soon as she can. She has taken the time to get to know Mom and understands her medical issues. Its great! I can finally relax a little bit. One final thing, I call Mom all the time. Her floor nurse, Maggie, is ALWAYS in and out, and I frequently HEAR her tell Mom that she loves her, and I hear Mom say....I love you too Maggie. Warms my heart! This all sounds so amazing, youre probably asking yourself if anything went wrong and Ill be honest, yes, it did. But whatever issue I had, it was resolved quickly with a phone call and it was all simple things. I couldnt be happier that Mom is there at The Oaks, and I am so happy she is finally SAFE. The most important thing of all.

The staff has been amazing! The level of care and response to the family is excellent. They have let me know about programs and opportunities that I would have struggled to know existed on my own. They make it so easy for me to get the assistance my father needs. I couldnt think of a better place for him. They keep him engaged and he seems to be at peace with his new home.

The caregiving at the Oaks at Pooler is exceptional. They have independent living with assistance as well as a memory care unit, fully staffed with caring and supportive attendants. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming and I cant say enough about how much the staff takes an interest in each and every resident. The Oaks at Pooler has met all the needs of our aging mother. The friends and fellowship she has there have made this time of isolation and Covid more than bearable. Mom has been a resident at The Oaks for over 2 years now and has thrived in her golden years. She loves helping new residents get acclimated, helped with sewing pillows for cancer patients, has lots of activities (pre covid-having outings), confers with the chef for meal ideas, plays the games that are available, and enjoys her visiting time with the staff. I can highly recommend the apartment living at THE OAKS!

The reason I dont give The Oaks at Pooler a 6-star review is because there arent 6 stars. My 84 year old mother got to the point where another assisted living facility could no longer give her the care she needed. I couldnt bear to see her in an outright nursing home. I contacted The Oaks and they absolutely went out of their way and bent over backwards assisting us in getting Mom into their facility. They worked with us on financial arrangements, answered all of our questions, were always courteous, returned our phone calls, and were just generally good, outstanding and caring people! The Oaks was the best decision that we made for the comfort, safety, and well being of Mom. It was so very difficult with the Covid19 mess, not being able to visit, but it was totally understandable. It just went to prove that The Oaks placed the safety, health, and well-being of their residents above all else, and it was greatly appreciated. We lost Mom 2 or 3 months after she moved in, but those 2 or 3 months put my mind at ease knowing she was well taken care of. I will forever be greatful to The Oaks for the service they provided my mother. I know I will omit someone, but I want to mention and especially thank Sherri, Nikki, Diane, Kimberly, and Kayla for their outstanding love, care, and devotion.

Our mother suffered a stroke in late November, 2019. It was devasting to our entire family. While we are all blessed that we still have her with us, she is unable to do many daily activites independently now. This is where The Oaks at Pooler came to our rescue. Our main goals have been to provide a safe, happy environment where our parents can live together and enjoy the comforts of home. We visited numerous assisted living communities and found The Oaks at Pooler to be the most welcoming, safe, and home-like community that provided all of the assistance necessary for our parents to reside comfortably. Our parents now enjoy a spacious two bedroom apartment, located within a beautiful property, delicious meals and activities to keep them interactive with others residents. Family and friends are always welcome to visit. In addition to all this, the most important aspect is the attitude and love they receive from their caregivers. I cannot speak highly enough of each and every staff member and the loving care they provide. It is hard work but they are always so kind!! Sherri Long welcomed us from day one with an informative, professional and super friendly attitude. Garrett Slemmons has also been nothing other than professional and prompt in providing information and answers to our numerous questions. The peace of mind our family has gained is worth a million. Thank you to EVERYONE at The Oaks at Pooler ❤

The Oaks has been a Godsend for my Dad. He is in the Horizons section for Alzheimers and Dementia patients. When it became clear that I could no longer take care of him at home safely I began looking for the best place for him. I wanted a homelike environment, clean, well-maintained and caring staff. Unfortunately my first try was disastrous. He was only at the first try for one month before I brought him back home. It was mutual as they did not want him there either. That is when I discovered the most important trait to be considered...training. The staff has to know how to handle these special patients who can be difficult to manage at times. The Oaks staff love and care for all of their patients and it shows. I am able to sleep well at night and continue to work knowing he is safe and content.

I was first introduced to the Oaks when a member of my family needed assistance. I can say with all confidence the Oaks staff and its Director Nicole Hodges are the most professional, knowledgeable and nurturing out there. They treat our family like it was theirs. They know how to diagnose a potential problem even before it happens. Their in-house therapy unit also provides the best PT, OT, and speech therapy in all the southeast. Oaks at Pooler is simply the best!!

Since I live some distance away, I spend the night with my mom when I visit and eat meals in The Oaks dining room. I have found the staff to be caring, hardworking, and capable. I am always welcomed, and witness the staff popping in and out of my moms room. She knows them by name and has a quick conversation with them. She has made friends, and welcomes new residents. Garret is accessible and always helpful when I have a question or concern. While my mom misses her home and friends, she is much more active and has many more social interactions. We didnt realize how isolated she was, until we saw her blossom at The Oaks. Having her little dog with her is icing on the cake!

There are some very caring people who work here, but my parents did not have a good experience at this place at all. Promises were made when we set them up to stay for respite care after my dad took a fall. Many of those promises were not kept. Wait times for help were longer than we found acceptable, and at least once they were completely forgotten about and didnt get taken downstairs to eat for a meal. The basic problem is understaffing. If theyd be willing to hire a couple more people to help during peak hours, it would make a world of difference. Now that an amazing new assisted living facility is opening near Savannah Quarters, The Oaks will up its game and do better for the people living there.

I just want to say what a Godsend this place has been to me and my Dad. My dad is in the Horizons Memory Care wing and the staff has been amazing. He was previously "asked to leave" another local Memory Care facility due to behavior problems associated with Sundowners after only a month. I was at my wits end. When I talked to the staff at The Oaks about what was going on they assured me that it was not anything they had not seen in other Alzheimer's patients and they would work with him. Their goal is to make sure that this is the last place he would have to be moved to and could live out his life without disruption of moving to a nursing facility. Everyone there has gone out of their way to learn about his life prior to Alzheimer's so they can better adapt his activities to things he likes to do. You can tell how truly caring they are and the genuine concern and care they give my dad. The interaction of the staff with all the patients is wonderful. They are very patient and treat everyone with respect. Dad has been there 3 months now. It took me a little while to relax and realize that they have this under control but it is an amazing feeling to know that when I cannot be there I do not have to worry about him. I could go on and on but for those looking for a place to put a loved one when the tough decision comes I would recommend visiting the Oaks. When you start looking do your homework and make sure that wherever you go there is enough staff and that they are trained well. A place can look great but not have the proper care and staff to take care of your loved one. The Oaks has both.
