After an unfavorable experience with my parent’s former assisted living community, I toured many facilities in search of a place they could truly call home. From the moment I walked through the doors of Starling at San Jose, I was impressed by the beauty of the community, its values, and the genuine warmth I felt from both the staff and residents. I especially appreciated that Starling is locally owned and operated rather than part of a large corporate system. It has a welcoming, family-oriented atmosphere. The enrichment team is vibrant and keeps residents engaged in meaningful activities, which is especially important for supporting an aging mind. The transition into Starling was smooth, and my parent settled in quickly and happily. The Director of Nursing and nursing staff also helped resolve an ongoing concern, relieving a tremendous amount of stress for me. I have been equally touched by how the residents look out for one another. Because life sometimes takes me away from the city for extended periods, the peace of mind Starling has given me is invaluable. We recently moved my mother into this assisted living community, and the experience has been wonderful. The Executive Director has been incredibly caring, professional, and attentive, which gave our family confidence from the very beginning. The entire management staff, including the sales director and director of nursing has gone above and beyond to make this transition as easy as possible. The activities department does an amazing job providing engaging and meaningful programs that keep my mom active and involved. The food has been excellent, and my mother has really been enjoying her meals. What stands out the most is the friendly and compassionate staff. I’ve had a great experience with this senior living community. The staff is always friendly, caring, and treats everyone with kindness. It’s easy to see they genuinely enjoy what they do. The administrative staff is welcoming and helpful, and the executive director brings such a positive energy to the community. You can tell the director is highly engaged with both the residents and the staff, and that attitude creates a warm, upbeat environment. One thing that really stands out is the activities. There’s always something going on, whether it’s games, crafts, exercise classes, live music, holiday celebrations, or group outings. What an incredible place! My grandmother moved here and absolutely loves it. I can barely catch her on the phone because she’s so busy with all her new friends and the activities they have every day. I was lucky to visit on the day they were doing their very own Antiques Roadshow’ where residents each brought special family relics and told us their stories. It was incredibly sweet!! The care all the staff take to make every day special is evident. Plus the food was awesome. Starling at San Jose is the best 🙂

I moved my father into Starling at San Jose in July, after we both agreed that he could benefit from assisted living. I wanted something that didn't look, feel, or give that "facility" type esthetic; something that offered all the comforts of home and daily living; something that could tend to an urgent need at the press of a button; something that offered planned activities, outings, and opportunities to socialize; something that would coordinate and manage his medical, medication, and home health care needs; something that would preserve the dignity of an aging parent. That "something" is Starling! The community feels like a resort hotel and has all the luxuries and amenities you could need for your loved one. Kuddos to Amy (Sales Director) -- she was amazing during the entire process and made the transition from rehabilitation to assisted living seamless and stress-free -- and she still makes herself available for support when needed. The Community Fair at Starling was such a fun day! I loved how the event brought people of all ages together. The residents were smiling and enjoying the activities, and it was clear how much thought went into making it special. Today marks day 7 since we moved my mother from her single family home, where she lived alone, into Starling at San Jose. This was a big, scary transition for her after 17 years living alone. We toured a few assisted living communities prior to Starling at San Jose, and left feeling uncomfortable with the idea of leaving my mom in their care. Starling, on the other hand? From the moment we walked in the door it smelled fresh and clean. We were greeted with a BIG smile from Demri at the front desk, and she introduced us to Amy (who we had been communicating with to set up our tour). Amy immediately made us feel at home, like we were already a part of the family. She was considerate of my mom’s feelings and asked in advance if there was anything we should avoid discussing in front of mom. She completely tailored the experience to our needs. Amy held our hand every step of the way. I always felt like she was available for me to be able to ask questions, or share and concerns (which there were literally none!). After a single week a Starling my mom is more energetic, vibrant and healthy than I’ve seen her in decades! She’s making friends with the residents and staff. She’s participating in activities. Most importantly she’s getting the professional medical support she deserves. The team at Starling at San Jose are what makes the environment so warm and welcoming. They are the heart and soul of the operation and I have to say thank you to, Remi, Kristin, Nicole and Demri for always greeting us warmly and genuinely at the front desk. Thank you to Flynn for hanging my mom’s TV, and helping her make this feel like home. Thank you Ana for stopping me in the parking lot and asking how you can help inspire mom to join in activities. You’re doing great! Thank you to Arenshia, Jessica, Sheila, Cheryl, Frank and the entire nursing staff for providing the highest quality medical care, with compassion. I appreciate their incredible teamwork and communication. Thank you to the housekeepers who took the time to engage my mom in conversation when you cleaned her apartment. She may not remember your name, but she remembers everything about your kind chat with her! I know there’s so many more incredible team members to meet (and I apologize if I missed anyone!). The decision to choose Starling at San Jose as mom’s forever home has already drastically improved her quality of life, and I feel very confident she will live longer and happier than we ever could have prayed for. My daughters are in the Girl Scouts and we have done a cookie sale event with Starling for two years now. I cannot begin to explain how amazing all the staff is there and how lovely of an experience it is every year going there. Boy did I get lucky when my mom chose to live at Starling at San Jose. I live at the beach and would have preferred her to live closer to me but it turns out she picked the perfect place. The staff and caregivers are exceptional and are very caring. Especially in memory care when the residents can be challenging they are always kind and patient towards the residents. The food is great and the rooms and hallways smell clean and fresh. I do not have one single complaint.

horrible place.......staff always needing more workers..slow response when needing help...former head was not honest...they took away my medicine and lost it when i was leaving...i slept in my wheel chair for 5 days waiting for a hospital bed...their bed too high for my feet to touch the ground ...1 server in dining room with 14 tables to serve..management in the office not helping him..6 thousand dollars for a month in hell.

My husband and I care for my 96 year old mother who has dementia. Planning a vacation can be a daunting task when it comes to making sure my mother will be properly cared for while we are gone. That was until the day I walked into Starling of Mandarin and met Amy. Amy was very professional, personable and down to earth. Making the decision to have my mother stay in their Respite Care was an easy decision. Everything Amy explained to me about the care and services my mother would receive were not only met but exceed my expectations. She totally understood about caring for a love one with dementia and the anxiety that comes with changing their surroundings even if it was only for a week or two. The staff in their Respite Care showed such loving care for my mother. They were very professional, courteous and knowledgeable about the care my mother needed. I can not wait to plan our next vacation because now I know the perfect place that will care for my mother while we are gone "Starling of Mandarin". My father is a memory care patient at Starling during this "Pandemic". Naturally, he has no understanding of what is occurring in our country right now. However, Starling has been absolutely amazing to work with given all the new protocols. The patients and staff have been regularly tested. They have been very cautious about keeping everybody healthy and safe and it is working. My father had a birthday during this time and Amy arranged a "drive-by" party. We have also been able to "visit" via Google Duo or Facetime, in order to assure Dad that we have not forgotten him. Step by step, we have been kept abreast of everything. I absolutely love Starling! My only regret is that they were not open when my Mother was needing memory care. Thank you, Starling for giving us peace of mind, and for a job well done!

I cannot speak highly enough about this facility. My father has been in the memory care at Starling San Jose for over a year. The staff is friendly, courteous, professional and caring. One of the best reasons I like Starling is because they have a wide variety of daily planned activities to keep the residents engaged along with live music on occasion and then there are the bus excursions to outside activities such as restaurants, movies, bowling etc. or just doing some sight seeing. It is a beautiful facility and reminds me of a hotel when you walk in. The food is very good and they have buffets on the holidays and special events so you can enjoy a nice meal and share time with your family members. I moved my mother from another facility. The difference is night and day. Eating 12 hour window. Clean and fresh all over. Great staff. My mom is in assisted living with a 1 bedroom apt. She is happy and that is what counts.

Starling at San Jose has beautiful views of Goodby’s Creek. I love to sit in the gazebo and watch the ducks and look for different bird varieties. Starling has some of the most caring and friendly staff I have ever seen in an assisted living facility. They have a very liberal transportation policy and try very hard to accommodate religious and social outings as well as medical trips. We have a very full activities calendar. Our enrichment coordinator is very open to any ideas the residents bring to her. You will be missing out on a wonderful opportunity if you don’t consider starling at San Jose when you’re looking for an assisted living facility.

Place is beautiful. People are really nice. However, negatives are that the Directv package that they have is awful. No option to add movie channels and no High Definition broadcast. The internet is also very spotty and doesn't reach some of the rooms. Would love to see them improve this to match everything else there that is top notch.

Families and their loved ones are encouraged to do the following before deciding on a community.
- Schedule a tour and visit the physical location to make sure community description is accurate.
- Confirm with community manager that living and services required for you or your loved one's unique needs and budget are met.
- Check with state government websites for additional provider licensing and information.

Assisted Living Center uses the term "assisted living" or "personal care" to inform users that a community provides assistance with some Activities of Daily Living (ADL's). It may not meet your state's legal definition required for that level of care.
