Concerned

I saw firsthand how terrible they are to dementia patients. They blame dementia patients for everything that goes wrong, or goes missing and for every injury they sustain. I saw them try to "punish" my loved one for "bad behavior." Uh, she's 89 and has dementia?? This isn't a preschool. The cleanliness of the memory care side was always utterly disgusting. Feces on the floor of the dining room not cleaned up for hours. There was also a nurse who moved from facility to facility (should tell you something) who showed me a picture on her phone of another dementia patient resident who had put on a diaper as a halter top. This head nurse showed me the image, laughed at the poor woman sitting in a wheelchair, wearing a diaper as a shirt, and said "Don't tell anyone I have this, I'm not supposed to take photos of them.. you know, HIPPA/PIPA and all that." Well, I immediately stopped trusting her right then and there! Cindy Digman is fine in the beginning stages, but she WILL turn on you the minute your loved requires an iota of attention... or experiences prolonged hospital stays. Or god forbid "acts up." It's not like we paid you thousands of dollars a month to provide my loved one with special attention as well as medication, food, medical care, etc. Someone there (I can't know if it was staff or another resident) stole prepaid cellphones, a gold necklace & some art from my loved one. Of course, always blaming it on my loved one. Every time I'd arrive to pick them up for a visit (weekly) I'd have to go room to room to try and find their shoes. They told me that was their fault too. I finally gave up and just brought a pair with me every time. The staff physically pushed my loved one, they screamed at them, ignored them, left them outside one night... I really could go on. I'm glad that this place is nice for some people. I have a feeling those people's loved one's aren't on the "bad side" aka the memory care side. I'd be interested to see them take an impromptu tour of it. I recommend just asking one day to see the other side. Where you enter is the "good side," for higher functioning residents. It's brighter, cleaner, cheerier, more active... Look- i understand how difficult caring for several dementia patients must be. I only had one in my home, whom I loved immensely, and over the years it grew increasingly more difficult. But these aren't just some neighbors I left them with; these were professionals whose sole job was to provide CARE. Instead, both my loved one and I were both made to feel like we were a bother, an inconvenience, and were barely tolerated. If a weekly visit from a family member causes you that much consternation, it really makes one wonder WHY? What's going on over there that a sane person's presence is so annoying... are you worried what else we might witness? TL:DR- if your loved one can still care for themselves & are more independent, then this place might be okay for them. It's certainly one of the better price ranges in Naples/Bonita. (Or, at least it was.) But if your loved one has a personality or requires a bit more care/attention, I'd avoid this place unless you want to watch your loved one's spirit die from daily mistreatment. Please know I do not write or share any of this flippantly. And when Kiva changes their name eventually, like they all do to avoid the scrutiny of bad reviews, I'll reiterate my concerns. If I can save one person from dying alone here, my loved one's suffering & my learning the hard way won't be wasted. Hug you people tight.

I am an elder law attorney in Naples. When I am looking for a memory care community for my clients, I always consider Kiva. Kiva is a small and has a homey environment. The administrator, Cindy Digman is always involved and engaged with her residents. We don't have many problems, but if we do, we know that Cindy will be responsive and help- to solve any problem. You will not find a place with more heart than Kiva.

Cindy and team appear to provide a safe, clean, and caring place for many elderly patients. It is not an easy job so our thoughts are not only with our Aunt but all the workers who make her as comfortable as possible. Thank you.

Kiva at Canterbury is a quaint well-run Assisted Living Memory Care Community. The Administrator, Cindy Digman has held her position at Kiva for over 20+ years. Cindy as well as all of the Kiva staff are compassionate individuals who care for the residents as if they were caring for there own families. When an individual requires Memory Care it can be expected that this individual might exhibit some behavioral issues associated with the disease. Kiva at Canterbury will work with these individuals tirelessly to resolve issues. It is a home-like atmosphere where the residents feel comfortable and safe. and Families of the residents are also comforted to know that they can reach out to the Administrator, Cindy Digman, 24 hrs a day 7 days a week.

It became apparent in early July that I needed to find a Memory Care /Assisted Living residence for my 92 year old mom. She’s been living in Independent Living for 7 years but only because I’m a retired RN and for the last 4 years, has been a participant in PACE (Program designed to keep the elderly in their own homes) who provided all her medical, social work, PT/OT, dietary needs. We looked into several places that PACE recommended and chose Kiva at Canterbury and I’m so happy that we did! From Cindy the Administrator to Tariana a Med Tech (studying for her nursing degree), to Denny the Maintenance/Engineer, to the aides and dietary staff, everyone has been so kind & supportive of my mom and me & my family who visit her. My mom has dementia (nasty disease) and as is typical, has difficulty with changes to her day-to-day activities and environment. She said as she first walked into Kiva: “ It feels like home”! (which amazed me). Cindy and her staff have created a home-like environment for their residents. Mom has flourished at Kiva! I’m greatly relieved as she’s now safe (residence is locked), monitored and well cared for (to minimize health risks) and receives good patient/resident care, meals and meds in a timely manner.
