Somerford House & Place Newark – Reviews
March 2021
Probably the best experience ever for a service that we ended up never using! Dads dementia required that he move to a memory care facility and Somerford came highly recommended from a couple of sources. Our conversations with the staff reinforced those recommendations. We were all set to move in right after the holidays, then his condition took a turn for the worse, had to be hospitalized and he ended up passing away at the end of January. (Not Covid-related for the record). Terri and Pauline were amazingly helpful, professional and most importantly caring throughout the entire process.

I am updating a previous review. My mother was transferred to Somerford from a previous facility. She had a terminal condition. From the moment she arrived, she was treated with dignity and respect by the staff. Her time there (7 months) was truly amazing despite limitations due to the pandemic. She made friends and loved every day there. At the end, the staff took great care of her and she died with dignity. I am eternally grateful to the staff there. Of note, I am a physician in the area so i deal with these facilities all the time. Somerford is among the best in many aspects.

Somerford is an amazing assisted living facility with outstanding staff. Mom moved into her lovely apartment earlier this year and has been accepted and loved on and made to feel so welcomed by everyone there. Staff is always available for assistance, to answer questions and concerns and lend a hand wherever possible. Mom has become more active and outgoing than sbe has the past few years, attending events and participating in activities and has made good friends. Its been a challenge for everyone during COVID quarantine, but Somerford staff has made it work! We are so pleased and blessed to have Mom residing here at Somerford.

I am so proud and thrilled to call Somerford House my Mothers home away from home. She has dementia so sometimes gets confused about things. The staff are friendly, supportive and go above and beyond the call of duty to make sure that Mom is well take care of. Due to the physical layout of the building it makes communication for everyone and everything quite simple. The staffs offices are in such close proximity to one another that an issue can be easily addressed (without picking up a phone or having to write an email!) The residence hallways, dining rooms and various other facilities are also close together, so the residents can get around with confidence and ease. Since March all visitation rights have been cancelled due to the pandemic. It has been necessary but so tough on everyone. Somerford House has made the best of it! They have set up virtual visits via Zoom or FaceTime, organized outdoor drive by parades and have recently set up window visits. I live in New York, so the daily FaceTime visits with Mom are priceless! Moms only complaint is about the food. She has always been a good cook and loves all different types of foods and flavors. I am hopeful that this can be addressed and modified once we get through

Im a student at the University of Delaware and visited this facility as part of a research project. First of all, the facility is absolutely incredible. It offers so many activities and services for all their residents. The staff goes above to make sure the residents feel right at home. I was able to tour the facility and it was beautifully taken care of and very clean! Just from walking around and observing I can tell the staff makes it their mission to know every resident on a personal. It was definitely one of the best assisted living facility I have visited and I would highly recommend it.

I have a family member who is a resident at Somerford Place. It is the best decision we as a family have made. Everyone from the front desk, nurse, cna, dietary, housekeeping, maintenance and the administration team is a caring staff. What a great team! The building is always clean and does not smell. The activities offered by Mary O. is phenomenal. She bakes, sings, dance, paint and tells story. She loves what she does, love the residents and it shows.

We toured many commuities before placing my grandmother at Somerford. We just really loved the home-like atmosphere. Shes adjusted much quicker than we thought, which is a huge blessing. The staff and residents have been so welcoming. The whole community really made it easy. They are so great and accommodating.

My 90 year old father has been a resident here for a few months now, and the experiences have been almost entirely positive. The staff are attentive, professional and obviously caring. The facilities are very nice, and generally well maintained. My complaints concern the services provided, or not provided, on a dependable basis. First, despite the near $6000/ month fee for residence, the management cannot see fit to include even basic internet connectivity for that price. Years ago, that may have been an understandable position, but this is 2019. Walk into any McDonalds, any public restaurant or other place of business. Odds are, there is a free WiFi connection available. How much could it possibly cost them to include this, which is widely seen as a basic necessity? Secondly, the contract states that basic transportation to and from medical appointments will be provided, utilizing the facilitys van. Th van was broken down with brake problems for more than two weeks and no official consideration was made to facilitate alternatives. Thankfully one of the wonderful, caring staff members thoughtfully came through and made private arrangements is Lyft. At her own expense, which we of course have reimbursed her for. These points aside, we are very very satisfied with Somerford House.

Before Somerford my mother was housebound, locked in as caregiver for her husband, who was dying with lung cancer. Mom never got out and they became co-dependent for basic necessities. She is 96 and he recently died at 84. For two years I watched her decline in mobility and mentality. She had no socialization, poor nutrition, and the home deteriorated around them. He wouldn't allow any help. After his death mom reluctantly agreed to visit Somerford. She is there now and thriving. Her voice is strong again, her memory is improving and she loves it there! She is so active she told my brother he didn't need to visit because she had so many things to do! She tells me, "the food is great, we are busy and sing all of the time, and I have so many friends!" Personally, I am so thankful for Somerford! I have my mother back again!

January 2019
Wonderful place! The staff is welcoming and caring. They felt like family! They treat the residents with dignity and respect. They were always willing to listen to our concerns about our mother's health and kept us updated on any changes to medication or care plans. The grounds are beautiful and the facility was always clean and nicely decorated. Residents' rooms are homey and comfortable. Nice dining room with fantastic food and a varied menu. There were always activities and the residents are encouraged to attend. The residents were very friendly too. Everyone from the administrator to the dining room staff know the residents by name and greet them when they see them in the hall. I had true peace of mind knowing my mother was living in a very caring, compassionate community!

June 2018
August 10, 2018 Somerford House 501 S Harmony Road Newark, DE 19711 Hello Denise (Williams) As I travel back today (8-10-18) to visit my Mother (Alma L DiStefano Somerford House Apt E4) I realize I have failed to write this letter after my last visit in June 2018. It is long overdue. I want to express my satisfaction and appreciation with the Somerford staff. My Mother has been living at Somerford 1-year July 10, 2018 My sister and I visit often. Being able to stay in our Mothers room (and have a pajama party!) has made a difficult transition as easy as possible. Its a great ‘perk for us girls ‘ The staff has been warm and welcoming every visit. The fact that I see the same faces every visit is a comfort. I assume Somerford recognizes and values the staff. I know almost everyone by name and we embrace during each visit. The staff is sincerely and genuine. I imagine Caregiving can sometimes be a thankless job, or we forget to say thank you. The crew at Somerford are worth their weight in gold!!! I am located in Colorado, my other sister travels from Holland, yet when I call I am recognized and made to feel issues will be addressed and greetings pasted along. If you had asked me a year ago if my Mother would except AND like the change to her life I would have told you you were crazy. Maybe the move was harder for me then her……. We moved my mother in law in a few months ago. She has Alzheimer's so we weren't sure what to expect. I can't begin to express how wonderful she's doing. The staff are so nice and knowledgeable. They have taught us so much about her disease. Her quality of life has improved Significantly since moving here. We just love this place and the people who live and work there.
November 2017
Somerford recently hosted an Easter Brunch for residents and their families. I must say it was top-notch. The food was great, decorations tasteful, and the energy and friendliness of the staff (as always) were refreshing! As a family member, I do appreciate the special events held at the facility.
