I like the comfortable environment and positive nature of people at Essex Meadows. A few of my favorite activities are the winter walks on trails of the property and adjoining preserve; swimming in our indoor salt-water pool; and attending weekly current events discussions led by a director who is well-prepared with challenging questions and up-to-the-minute news topics. Essex Meadows is unique among Continuing Care (Life Care) retirement communities. It is located on 104 acres of woodlands which allows a large garden area with raised beds and hiking opportunities. The size, about 250 independent residents, and a 45 bed Health Center, is ideal for getting to know not only all the residents, but the staff. The food is superb. With the exception of those living in six duplexes and a single unit, when the weather is poor, the complete facility is available walking inside. There are a variety of activities which significantly contribute to the residents mental and physical well being. It would be a huge mistake if you did not visit here, and compare with other communities.

The residents and staff are friendly and interesting. The staff go out of their way to be helpful. There are many activities available; my favorites are hiking, exercise classes, and music programs. The food is also fabulous.

There is a remarkable culture of care and of kindness abiding at Essex Meadows. Every individual on our staff from Executive Director to Dishwasher to Maintenance Man is intensely predisposed to love seniors. Patient as Job, everyone know your name AND likely your pet's name and your favorite dessert. A ready smile greets you, even if you just spilled that dessert all over the tablecloth!

I came to Essex Meadows in 2020 from Long Island, my lifetime home. When I lost my sister & many of my friends, I knew EM was THE place to move into. I have met so many nice, fun intelligent new friends here. I have a lovely apartment, yummy food, lots of activities. Where else can you sign up for a dinner cruise on the Connecticut River, being served lobster roll & wine , plus trips to theaters, musical performances, in house bridge, art classes, billiards, plus new croquet & bocci courts. The team at Essex Meadows was absolutely wonderful. Following my 87-year-old mother’s hip fracture, the nursing staff provided excellent pain management and displayed incredible patience. The physical therapy team was top-notch, getting her up and moving confidently within just a few weeks. Additionally, the administrators were amazing, guiding us through the complex transitions of senior care with ease. We couldn't have asked for a better place for her to heal.

When I arrived at Essex Meadows from Manhattan a little over 4 years ago, I wondered how much cultural life I would enjoy here. I’m happy to say it’s been great: lots of theater, musicals, opera, and wonderful museums to visit. And the quality is terrific with many professionals from New York City and Boston. My mom is in the final week of a seven week stay at The Health Center at Essex Meadows. She was independent prior to her fall and needed total care with two people assisting her upon admission to Essex Meadows. The care she has received there has been phenomenal! Everyone we have encountered is caring, compassionate, and professional. This care started from the first conversation with the admission coordinator prior to her arrival and continued through her stay. The patient coordinator at the front desk always has a bright, welcoming smile! They’ve accommodated every need from her gluten free diet to her physical needs with nursing care, occupational therapy, and physical therapy, to care coordination behind the scenes by their great social worker! They also have an AMAZING recreational therapist who has gone above and beyond ensuring she was engaged with activities she enjoyed. I’ve had several meals there and the food is excellent! There’s a variety of options at every meal and they’ve all been delicious! The dietary staff is also wonderful! As a nurse, I’ve been extremely pleased with the caring environment in The Health Center. The facility is bright, clean, and is decorated for each season! The staff truly treats the residents like family. No one is ever rushed. The staff is also kind to each other! They take time to have a conversation with residents and their families. I’ve often seen them give residents a hug which is so needed when people are alone and separated from their families. Thankfully, she is well enough to return to her home. Many thanks to everyone at the Essex Meadows Health Center! We will miss your smiling faces!

We moved to Essex Meadows when caring for a house and grounds was getting to be too much for us. Now we can sit back and watch all the work being done without lifting a finger. Furthermore, at Essex Meadows, we have found that exercise classes, at multiple ability levels, as well as individual training when desired, are available and very manageable for us. Since the exercise is right here in the building, we actively participate.

Essex Meadows surpasses all expectations you may have of any aspect of a retirement community. This has been my Mother's happy place for 18 years where I visited regularly, and I think of it more as a luxury cruise ship. The staff (all staff) are courteous, professional and attentive. The property is meticulously maintained and fully featured. Activities of every nature (external and internal) are going on all the time. The food is outstanding, as good as any restaurant I've been to. The residents are happy, active and a joy to engage with. When needed, the health center is, by my estimation, state of the art and expertly run. If there were a sixth star for exceptional, Essex Meadows has earned it and I thank them one and all (on behalf of my Mom) for setting the bar so high.

Essex Meadows is home to many artists and art lovers. Being included in this group, I have enjoyed serving as a volunteer member of the Art Gallery Committee by visiting local art exhibitions and associations, and conducting online research to help select artists for changing gallery exhibits. For its moderate size, the library here at Essex Meadows is amazing, offering readers daily newspapers, magazines, CD’s, puzzles and abundant non-fiction and fiction choices including mysteries, biographies, history, etc. All is managed expertly by our resident librarian Sarah Nisenson assisted by other resident volunteers. As I walked back from the Essex Meadows Preserve, I pondered how fortunate we are to be a 1/4 mile walk from extensive woods (900 acres!) - where I was treated to one the most abundant and extraordinary Mountain Laurel blossom displays ever - and at the same time - being aware that at just over mile in the opposite direction we have a drug store, liquor store, restaurants, fitness center, fresh fruit and vegetable stand (in season), plant nursery, and meat market! Nan and i were on the official Essex Meadows (EM) waiting list when Nan became 75. If a person on the waiting list was having a birthday, EM would provide a meal for that individual’s family and guests. Nan, myself, and her two sisters and brother’s-in-law visiting from California came to dinner here at EM. The six of us were seated in the Sun Room, and what was on the table? A bottle of Champagne, a bottle of red wine, and a bottle of white wine! What an introduction to EM! One of the brothers-in-law said, I’d like to move in here right now!

ESSEX MEADOWS REVIEW My wife and I have lived at Essex Meadows for 10 pleasurable years. One of my greater pleasures has been singing with The Bokum Boys, a barbershop quartet whose ages add to 365 years! I wrote new lyrics for some old melodies for special occasions. One of my favorites I called The Essex Meadows Anthem. It sums up what I like about Essex Meadows. It was sung to the tune of Let Me Call You Sweet Heart. The first verse goes like this: Life at Essex Meadows is so very sweet. Protected..pampered..entertained, it can’t be beat. Some folks think it’s magicPlease don’t make us laugh. You must know it’s what we owe to our great staff. There are endless examples of how we are protected, pampered and entertained. One was the special efforts that Essex Meadows made to keep our lives as normal as possible despite the very real threat posed by Covid 19. We could not imagine what it would have been like living on our own during those bad years.

Five star senior living! My parents lived at Essex Meadows for six years. They experienced the independent living, use of their assisted living, and the health center. All levels had outstanding care. The food and services are all excellent. Would not hesitate to be a resident there or place a loved one at Essex Meadows.

I moved to Essex Meadows about two years ago. It was a perfect decision for me. I had been alone in my house for seven years and did not want to spend another winter worrying about my furnace or driveway! I travel a lot and being able to call a cat sitter and just close the door behind me and not worry about anything is fantastic. I still have friends in the community and now I have a whole new group of resident-friends whom I enjoy immensely. The staff is terrific and, oh, so helpful. Plus there are activities and entertainment all the time. I love my new life.

I had an excellent experience for a week in the Health Center after a total knee replacement. The nursing care and the Physical Therapy were amazing. My room was comfortable and my stay definitely made a huge contribution to my recovery.

The Facility is great. Many a friend is there. The food in the dining room has taken a deep dive to marginal. Sad. it used to be a huge draw and rhe new management and or kitchen seem to ignore their residence.

We have lived here for over 12 years in a free standing cottage. The location (between Boston and New York City) was a big factor for us. We also liked the proximity to a very pleasant small town and all the acreage around Essex Meadows, with gardens, woods, trails and ponds. We wanted a place that had a skilled nursing facility on the premises in case we ever needed it, which we have. There are lots of activities, both physical and intellectually stimulating. My husband uses the gym and I use the pool. We both go to concerts and lectures and particularly the current events discussions. We have reached the stage where my husband needs some help and an aide comes morning and evening to help him get dressed and ready for bed, which is a great help for me. The food is good, too!

My experience with this outstanding facility was when both parents were in rehab together. My Mom had a broken arm and my Dad was recovering from a bad case of pneumonia. Both my parents were in their 90's at the time. The staff was so attentive and easy to work with. Everyone, from the front office to the cleaning staff were so caring, took the time to listen and get to know our family. Communication between departments and shifts was outstanding. In addition to highly skilled nursing care, my parents had access to activities, excellent food and beautiful surroundings. I would wheel my Dad to one of the library areas or by the fireplace for our visits. Once, we even bundled up and went out on the veranda on a sunny day. They accept Medicare for rehab only. I highly recommend this facility to anyone needing high quality skilled nursing care.
