My dad was in The Cottages from January 2019 until the day he died in December 2020. Prior to Covid we were very pleased with his care. I was there every day and we did not have any major issues, maybe some little things every now and then. But overall very pleased. When Covid hit, everything changed. My dad went downhill consistently for 10 months, the caregivers and nurses came and went, interacted with their families, then came to work and interacted with the residents. But me, who stayed isolated working at home, I wasn’t allowed to visit with my father because I might spread Covid to him. It was an absolute nightmare. They wouldn’t even let us in his room when he was dying, to say goodbye. Absolutely devastating experience. Now that it’s no longer run by the Episcopal Diocese, I have heard that it has gone downhill. Very sad.

Edit* since its purchase it’s not what it used to be. Their census numbers are low. Almost all of their long time employees have left. People who worked there for twenty or thirty years have moved on. That really tells you something.

Not Happy

My mom was at St. Martin’s for 4 days for rehab and we were considering having her stay for long term care if the rehab went well. She had 2 falls in the short time I allowed her to stay. A nurse found her in the floor one morning and I have no idea how long she had been there. The other fall happened when I was there and when I asked a nurse for assistance in getting her off the floor, she seemed very annoyed. The staff was rarely around and if she pressed the call button, it could take 15 minutes for someone to even check on her. When I tried to call to check on her, there was no one at the nurses station to answer the phone. I tried to call 6 times over the course of an hour and no one answered. I had her put into hospice care instead because I couldn’t leave her there to be neglected.

A great place for rehab! The nurses, Ms. Charletta and MAC Brandi are just two of the exceptional people who make up SMIP’. Ms. Trina Vines communicates promptly and she is approachable.

My mother has been a resident of St Martin's in the Pines for over 8 years. She spent 6 years in independent living in The Arbors and was able to move into The Cottages two years ago as her care needs increased. I am grateful that such a well-designed facility with caring and thoughtful staff is available in Birmingham.

St. Martin’s is a special place I tell my friends that are looking for long term care to tour and watch how employees treat each other and speak with residents. That will tell you the most about a community. St. Martin’s does this do well!

The staff at Saint Martins are some of the kindest most compassionate people I’ve ever met. My father was very well taken care of the three days he was there. Thanks to Saint Martins I was able to sit with my dad while he passed even through the Covid Pandemic. I am very thankful these women helped me through my fathers last days.

Rating the Independent Living facility from 3 years ago, I would give it 5 stars. My mother-in-law was in the independent living for 2 months and it was everything we had hoped it would be. After falling and breaking a hip, she went to the rehab side. It was like night and day. They were very understaffed. They would take 30 minutes to answer the call button when we were there. They would place the call button on the opposite side of the room in an unreachable location when we weren't there. They were told of this and we would leave notes explaining that she couldn't reach it. They continued to do it until we had her transferred to another location. I would give them 0 stars if possible. Locations like this seem to change regularly, so note that this is a review of the situation from 3 years ago. Everyone agreed that the food was always good, though....but the care itself left a lot to be desired.

This morning, I brought my wife and 3 other very close friends of a man whose been admitted here for end-of-life care. My immediate impression was very favorable. It was clean and quiet, with no "sanitary cleaning" odor. Upon entering one of the staff saw me and asked if she could help. She told me where we had to sign in and what Suite our friend was in. As we walked to his room, his nurse introduced himself and told us a bit the kind of care he was receiving and told us he was available for any questions. Our friends room was very clean and neat. The lighting was very comfortable and welcoming. We spoke with 4 staff members besides our friends nurse. Every one of them were very pleasant and offered their help, for anything we needed. I noticed a number of "little things" that had been done to help keep our friend comfortable. Things that I'm positive are helping him remain as comfortable as possible in his condition and demonstrate a deep level of genuine caring attitude from the nurses and staff. If I ever have a need to place a family member in an end-of-life Hospice Care facility, I would not hesitate to use St. Martin's in the Pines.

Sounds like workers like to be there, the families of loved ones not so impressed. My MIL was there for rehab and the experience was not pleasant. Dirty, run down rooms, so so staff. They lost her pj's and eventually started to ignore her. Sept 2017.

St. Martin's is a great faith based and tight knit community. There is such a friendly atmosphere around the entire campus. The elders and their families are the greatest joy and blessing to be able to care for. Our pastoral team is remarkable; they keep the community grounded in faith and positivity! Not to forget, the food is amazing!
