Front my first call with Amanda through the whole process of finding a place for my Mom at Somerby was every bit seamless. A decision like this is not fun for children when their parents are not quite able to completely care for themselves but don't want to lose their independence. I didn't know what I was doing and was extremely anxious about the unknown. Amanda put my mind at ease. She finished my sentences about my Mom's moods, diagnosis, fears, etc. She continues to always be available for questions or just to talk about the process. The community is literally like a resort. The residents seem so happy and the staff is warm and so helpful. I Highly recommend Somerby.

During the most stressful period of our 66 years of marriage, we were required to find a memory care facility for my wife. We were considering a number of options, it was a clear choice after getting a tour of Somerby conducted by Amanda Williams. The tour and decision were made on a Thursday before a holiday week end. Although much documentation was required in order to transfer her from a different rehab facility to Somerby, Amanda asked me to allow her to take responsibility for and stress from my family and she would make certain the transfer would be accomplished within the short allowed time frame. Even though a signature was required by a medical official, on a cruise ship, she spent her weekend and holiday securing the required documentation. During all of this activity, she still furnished a barbecue linch for my family. My wife is getting the needed care and assistance in one of the most elegant facilities in the Southeast. This was accomplished only through the professional staff, especially Amanda and Charge RN, MeMe. My family members are so thankful for the Somerby team. My sweet wife has now been living at Sommer for almost 4 months, and I have spent virtually every afternoon with her during this period. I just wanted to confirm that we made the right decision. She has adapted well and has gained the ability to help the professional staff who are doing a great job. She loves them all. The nursing staff and activities director are amazing.! Residents stay engaged and are constantly challenged to use their memory and physical abilities. Housekeeping and food has been exceptional.

I want to start off by saying this community superseded every expectation my mother and i had! The website does not do it justice. We took a tour with a young man named Hunter who is the sales director and he was perfect in every way. My mother is not easy to get along with and does not talk much to people who is not family. Hunter had her laughing and even talking about a time when she was younger and that never happens anymore. We was just as impressed with the young man who toured us as we was with this beautiful facility. Very clean and friendly staff. 5 stars all across the board.

We first saw Somerby when investigating places where my elderly mother might like to live. We said, "We want to live there some day!" Well, that day has come. We always said that we wanted to move into a retirement home when we wanted to and not when we had to. It started when my husband said "Read this interesting article on retirement living." We both thought that downsizing and making a new home in an independent living facility made sense. "Let's go look at Somerby!" We went there the next day and it was as nice as it was 10 years ago! After looking at several other places, we put a deposit on a beautiful 3-bedroom apartment overlooking a pond with two water fountains! Somerby was bright and beautiful and the staff and residents were super friendly. The next day we put our home up for sale. It sold within the week; and we were living in Somerby in less than 30 days. We downsized in 4 easy stages: (1) Selected what we would take to our new home; (2) invited family to come and take what they wanted; (3) invited friends to take what they wanted--all for free; and (4) gave the residue to charity. It was all so much fun, like a free Flea Market! Moving was exciting and easy. Somerby put in new flooring, painted, cleaned and even helped us hang pictures, cabinets, shelving and mirrors! Now, six months later we are so happy with our decision. The staff and residents continue to be friendly and call us by our first names. The Somerby food is delicious. We eat dinner with two other couples that are our age. At dinner we enjoy great conversation and we all share hilarious stories of "back in the day." Twice a month the head Chef demonstrates and cooks a special lunch. One time he invited Don to cook his famous Flaming Spinach Salad! Our weekly housekeeper now feels like a member of our family and she does an excellent job cleaning and washing the linens. The social activities are more numerous to mention but we especially like the Somerby sponsored day trips around the Birmingham area, watching Sunday movies in the Somerby Theater, playing bridge and Bingo. Here's a big surprise you might like--the wine is free! We have said many times, this is like living on a 5-Star Cruise Ship without the waves! This is the most wonderful facility for Independent Living with the availability to transition to assisted living and nursing home if necessary. Our initial visit included a tour and personal meeting to discuss the details of transitioning from home to Ind. Living. Michelle Suggs made mom feel like she had arrived at her new home and she was taking a tour. The staff was extremely nice, staff retention was amazing- many had been there 5-15 years, and the residents were glowing. We got to visit with the residents and they were so gracious to take time out to talk to us- all were happy, loved their environment, and strongly recommended coming. There are way too many nice things to say about Somerby- I’m just so glad we found it and they had the perfect apartment for mom ready within a few weeks.

We move clients into Somerby on a regular basis, and we dont move people back out like we do at some communities. I think that one reason for this is that it is a very lively place!They have empowering and energetic lifestyle program at Somerby called Masterpiece Living , and I was thinking about it recently while I was stuck in 280 traffic on the way home from there. I had asked the activity director what Masterpiece Living actually meant, and she jumped right in to explain it to me. From the first day that we visited I felt that this was where we should make our new home! The entire staff was warm and inviting. While having lunch that day several of the residents came to our table to greet us and made us feel like they really were interested in getting to know us and have us be their neighbors. Weve only been here for three months but it seems like weve been here much longer. Everyone is friendly and seems to go out of their way to help us settle in and feel that we belong. Everytime I walk around the building, I am struck by how caring and compassionate the people that work at Somerby are. The building itself is beautiful - welcoming and cheerful. The meals selections are tasty and vary according to taste. You can always find something you want to eat! The lifestyles department also tries to accomadate a variety of tastes -- and does so wonderfully.I cant think of any place that I would want to live that would come close to where I have chosen. Hello -- Im Trudie Edwards and I have lived at Somerby St. Vincents 119 for four years as of October 28, 2013. Most of our activities are based on our Masterpiece Living program in that it focuses on gracefully aging. The components are Social, Intellectual, Physical and Spiritual. To cover the social aspect we have parties for birthdays and newcomers, as well as Town Hall meetings and games. We play bridge 4 days a week plus lots of other games. Intellectually, we often have speakers from outside the community as well as residents within the community reviewing their lives. When it comes to physical, thats well covered if you want to participate. We have 5 different exercises classes a week -- Tai Chi, Senior Strength, Balance Class, Line Dance with Zumba --just to name a few. Across the parking lot, there is a wellness facility for walking, swimming, and spa amenities. Within our community, we have a retired minister and wife who have Sunday morning worship, Monday Ladies Bible Study and Wednesday evening Bible Study. I have a wonderful time here with many friends!

The other day I started wondering what life would be like if we had stayed at our old house andenjoyed our twilight years in our comfortable abode. One by one our friends had stopped going to the movies and so did we. But here at Somerby we can see 3 movies a week and once a month we can join a group viewing the latest and greatest movies at the local theater. I dont know why our friends slowly disappeared; maybe its the weather or their latest bout with lumbago. Whatever the reason, we get to see our friends every day at Somerby.Birthdays came and went and annually we would get birthday cards which we would readquietly to ourselves. But not here; once a month there is a blast. All those among us that celebratetheir birthdays this month share their joy with us as well as a piece of their birthday cake and something to quench our thirst. And to make sure that the moment is memorable some relate interesting stories from their life. And to keep the mood light we enjoy entertainers playing music that many of us recall from long ago. How much more pleasant the time spent celebrating birthdays here at Somerby.Speaking of music, we enjoy community singing with the gang. The words are flashed on thscreen while the piano player renders those almost forgotten melodies. Its been a long time since we sang, Shell Be Coming Round the Mountain. Or we laughingly point to one of our female friends as we sing, The old gray mare she aint what she used to be. Yes, this singing turns back the time when many of us enjoyed the bouncing ball keeping time for us in the movies when we sang together for entertainment. The trivia game gives us the opportunity for friendly competition to see which team can answer the most questions correctly. We never outgrow our need to compete.Many of us came from small towns and we loved our family doctor. In all candor, although whated to leave them, the skills of the medical professionals just a block from Somerby would be hard to duplicate. Plus access to some of the top medical facilities in Birmingham makes this an ideal city to retire.In all candor we were getting too old to perform many of the much-needed household chores.Shopping and cooking for the family diet was almost as difficult as keeping thelawn mowed. Andfinding qualified help to supplement our fading skills was beyond our reach. But here at Somerby ourskills are no longer needed as they have been replaced by pleasant, qualified personnel. We dine outevery day. Who could believe it? Our meals are more healthful and better tasting than we couldimagine. So, at last, we can safely retire as we are in the best of hands.

I was invited to lunch on a Wednesday, last month. I had never visited Somerby and was not familiar with it. My friend told me about the $5.00 luncheon buffet that was open to the public on Wednesday. She bragged about the food that was prepared by an excellent chef. First of all, I was excited when I first walked in the door, just to know that these beautiful facilities were available to seniors who want a carefree, beautiful place to live out the rest of their senior years. Everything from gourmet food, transportation, a coffee lounge, day long activities of the finest kind and the facilities including doctors offices and a gym across the street. The ambience of the entire property is peaceful and beautiful. Now, all that said, talking to staff sealed the deal that this is just the kind of place that I would prefer when I give up my home in the future to enjoy wonderful living with little responsibility and smiling faces all around. I learned of their Masterpiece Living program to encourage all ages to keep life exciting and active. Thank you Kathy for inviting me to lunch where I discovered Somerby One-Nineteen.
