My mother has been at Highgate for about two years. She started in assisted living and then moved over to the memory care side as she declined. The experience has been trying but the Highgate folks have done a good job helping me manage through it. There are much more expensive options out there with more activities, larger outdoor areas, and such, but Highgate feels high-end to me with plenty of staff and attention and a clean, well-designed building. The care for my mother has been very good--I never worry about her safety, hygiene, nutrition, dignity--and while she's struggled through dementia, she's now at a spot where memory care at Highgate is a solid fit for her. Recently Highgate has hired a new care director and she has increased the science-based care and improved staff interactivity with residents and we've seen even more improvement in my mother's mood as a result. They have also recently increased family outreach activities including a dementia "simulation" presentation which was incredibly helpful in educating families on how to interact with their afflicted loved ones. Kelsey--the community relations director--is spectacularly helpful and always responds immediately and helps me no matter the topic.

My mother moved into Highgate at Bellingham about a year ago (2023). She has made many good friends since that time and she has enjoyed getting to know the staff as well. She loves the afternoon drives into the countryside, as well as the programs at the facility. The staff has been terrific! They truly care about the residents, and they always greet my mom by name with a smile and a kind word. I have found the staff to be flexible and accommodating and helpful to our needs. I am happy to have found such a loving group of folks for mom!

We moved my parents to Highgate in Bellingham after a bad experience at Creekside in Burlington. The level of care provided has been excellent at Highgate. The staff are engaged with residents, and the Executive Director is very approachable, available and involved. Highgate has a homey feel and the residents are friendly and inclusive. They have fun activities and events daily and the food is well prepared, presented and tasty. The pricing is fair, and there are add-ons such as a spa treatment available also. Well located near restaurants and stores so you can take your loved ones out to eat or shop. Highly recommend.

My stepmother moved into Highgate in March of 2021. At that time, she had mild, moving towards moderate, dementia. Soon after moving in, staff determined that they could keep her safer and happier by moving her into the memory care side of the facility during the day. They did this on their own, without asking for anything from me, just because they thought it was the right thing to do. In fact, everything they did while my stepmother was there was because it was the right thing to do. My stepmother died on September 7th 2022. I cannot praise the staff and administration at Highgate enough as to the care, attention, dedication, compassion and love that they showed her while she lived at Highgate. In addition, they worked collaboratively with me to ensure that, while although I live in Canada, I was able to offer her the care and support she deserved and needed. For this I will be forever grateful.

The team at high gate are amazing. Big shout out to Annette who has treated my mum with patience and kindness while she would forget the time of day. They have always been on top of things such as switching her medications and ensuring she was adequately taken care of despite her memory loss. Her health at 86 has progressively gotten worse but the staff have been there with our family every step of the way. We value the constant communication to keep us updated on my mums health.

Mom has had a great transition to Highgate, she has made friends and feels comfortable there. She is 94 years old and has some memory issues but the team is happy to help her find her room and remind her that she does live there on a regular basis. It's hard getting old, the things you once knew are no longer there at your easy access, it's great to have mom in a place where the team understands the struggle.

My mom was a resident at Highgate for a few months. All the staff were wonderful. From first phone conversations through a first visit, everyone at Highgate was so supportive and kind, and helped to make her difficult transition to assisted living easier. Mom's needs accelerated quickly, and everyone stepped up to provide her the very best care. Although her time there was short, she was very happy there -- she loved the folks who helped her, she loved the food, and she loved the facility. I was so grateful for everyone's compassion as her needs changed so rapidly. The nursing, caregiving, management, housekeeping, and front desk staffs were all exceptional. Highgate Senior Living staff in Bellingham have been very helpful and kind. They help my mother with all of her needs, and allow her to make choices when appropriate. They are happy to take a cordless phone to her in the cottage Memory Care unit, anytime I call. They are available to answer any of my questions via phone or e-mail. Mom tells me they are very nice, and she's not easy to please.

This is our second Assisted Living experience in Whatcom County. We selected a different facility as our first choice primarily because of they had a 2 bedroom room that Highgate did not offer. After a year we needed to relocate to a smaller Living area and the best choice was Highgate. We are very pleased with the staff, the homey intimate feeling of the facility. The food and menu selection is excellent. The dining room is a wonderful area and a great dining experience. The staff is excellent, attentive, kind, curteous and genuinely care for the residents. They offer a good variety of activities and getting involved was another primary reason for the move. The building is clean, quiet, comfortable and all the residents seem pleased to be there and enjoy each other's company. I recommend Highgate and it should be near the top of anyone's list looking for an assisted living home for themself or a family member.

A client for whom I was trustee resided at Highgate for several years. I became thoroughly familiar with Highgate, both the administrative staff and the nursing staff. The administrative staff made the initial stages of my clients residency very accommodating and easy to conclude. I could not have asked for better help. All communication was prompt and left no mystery as to my client's status. When an increase in monthly payment was necessary, the staff discussed this with me at length and there was never any question but that the bill was accurate. Similarly, the nursing and housekeeping staff informed me by telephone or email every time there was a change in my client's status. I was informed of every incident that would ordinarily cause alarm, especially when my client would suffer any kind of fall or illness. When my client became too ill to reside at Highgate, the staff facilitated her move to hospice care. When it came time to remove my client's affairs from Highgate after my client passed away, the housekeeping staff went out of their way to make sure that we could access everything, and they assisted in moving furniture out of the building. One could not ask for better service from a care facility than the service I received from Highgate recently.

We're just finishing the first month of Mom's residence at Highgate, and our impressions are very positive. The most important thing is the Mom is happy. This was our big worry because she speaks only Japanese, and communication would clearly be a challenge. The staff has been fantastic. They are attentive, supportive, and compassionate. Since it's a small community, the staff seems to know all the residents well, and the residents themselves seem to know everyone too. This fosters a very helping atmosphere among everyone. The food is quite good. We love that the portions are relatively small and the salt content is low. This shows a true sensitivity toward everyone's good health. Mom has enjoyed the sightseeing outings, and she has quickly felt that she has become part of the larger community. The one suggestion we have is to offer "extra" services on an ala carte basis. For instance if someone on the basic plan wants 1 or more spa services in a month, offer some way for this to happen on a per-request basis.

Thank you for the chance to let you know about our feelings toward Highgate. Our Mother's care is, of course, of utmost importance to us. Truly, we do not have any negative concerns about the care she is receiving. The facility always smells clean, Mama is and smells clean. She always has clean clothes on, her bedding is clean. Meals seem to be well balanced and now that Mama is not feeding herself on a regular basis she is either receiving finger foods or a care provider shows immense patience in feeding her. Mama is also sleeping more and more and the staff is so very patient and kind when it is time to get her up for dinner. They are careful with her in how they rouse her and move her from bed to wheelchair. They talk to her in gentle tones. I am very grateful for this care. The staff always tries to include her in activities and always these activities are geared to all patients and their ability to be included. One day one of the care providers bought and set up a child's wading pool in the courtyard and wheeled about five women out to splash their feet in the pool. Mama was one of them and tho she resisted at first she totally enjoyed the experience. Finally, the staff seems to always be knowledgeable about our Mom what her weight is at a moment's notice, what she as eaten, how long she has slept so we don't go home wondering what is happening to Mama. In short, we are very pleased with all aspects of care she is receiving and appreciate you reaching out to make sure we have no concerns. Melani

My sisters and I are very glad we chose Highgate as home for our mother. It was an enormous move for her, not just because it was across the country from where she had lived most of her 88 years, but because of the compromise to her once brilliant cognitive abilities. From the first meeting, we knew the staff understood and believed in our approach and objective of helping her to be as content as possible. Six months in, our belief in both the model and the skill and compassion of the entire Highgate staff has only strengthened. We appreciate how much they seem to genuinely like and "get" her, what is important to her in maintaining a sense of herself and purpose. We so appreciated that they supported our idea of her having a cat to love and care for. They seem to genuinely care about and care for the cat too! There have been some physical health issues that have arisen that have required collaboration, diligence, observation and not always fun intervention, which the medical team and support staff have handled well. They strive to keep us in the loop of decision making. The food is exceptional, the place itself feels lovely, warm and modern. The activities, including outings, are designed to create community, be fun and gently stimulating and we have enjoyed joining her in them whenever possible.

Highgate has a very relaxed homestyle feel to it. The decor looks good and the accommodations are okay. Family members can come and go without hindrance. There are two sections: The Manor for Assisted Living and the Cottage for secure Memory Care. I'm curious however about the level of housekeeping.
