As a VisaVie Senior Living Advisor, working with Monique Dionne at Chartwell Grenadier is truly an exceptional experience. Her genuine focus on kindness, care, and compassion immediately puts seniors and their families at ease, giving them confidence that they’ve made a wonderful choice. There is a calm, reassuring presence in the way Monique connects with people ” thoughtful, attentive, and never rushed. Situated in the heart of the High Park community, working with her feels less like a formal meeting and more like a comfortable conversation with a caring neighbour who truly understands what matters. It is always a pleasure collaborating with Monique at Chartwell, and I have the utmost trust in the care and experience she provides. ” Mark

The Grenadier has been my mother's home for almost two years, but from day one, the staff made her feel so warmly welcomed. She has found a community here and is thriving as a part of it. There's always a buzz in the lobby for those who want social activity and peaceful sunny areas around the building for more quiet. The communication is excellent - somehow the staff knows the all residents and their families as individuals.

Chartwell Grenadier welcomed my mother into their assisted living about a month ago. We are really happy with the facility, the team have been welcoming and caring and she settled in right away. The food is particularly good (I've eaten there several times and was really impressed , see photo of lunch recently) and it really makes my mother happy. Thank you Grenadier for taking such good care of my mother.

I am grateful for all of the care and concern the staff at the Grenadier have shown throughout the pandemic. Whenever I go in to visit my 93-year-old mother, I am struck by the kindness of everyone I meet. This is particularly meaningful because I know that at the same time, all of the staff members are worried -- about the health of the residents, about their own health and that of their families. I am also grateful for the Grenadier's humane policy of allowing essential family care-givers to visit, and ensuring that we were vaccinated. This has made a huge difference to my mother's mental and emotional health throughout the lockdown. The Grenadier is also blessed with an excellent, creative chef, resulting in meals that are varied, made with fresh ingredients, and very good. We are anxiously waiting for activities to be resumed now that all residents and staff have been vaccinated. But while we wait, I know that my mother is safe and being well cared for. That's a huge relief for all of us.

I can not express how impressed I am by the staff, programming and food offered at the Grenadier. My father, who has dementia, recently moved to the Grenadier. As you can imagine, it is a very stressful and emotional time for my father and our family. The staff at the Grenadier are doing EVERYTHING they can to make the transition easier. They are compassionate, patient, and care deeply about my father's well being (as well as ours). They honour the dignity of each resident. They take the time to answer all my questions. Their doors are always open and they respond to emails right away. Monique handled the sales portion of the process with professionalism. She even takes time out to chat when we see her in the community. She put our minds at ease from day one. Sharangeet and Marie are so patient with my questions and concerns and they both go out of their way to accomodate the needs of my father. Elena provides exceptional programing, offering high quality, interesting and diverse activities for the residents. Only professional musicians are invited to perform at the Grenadier! The housekeeping is outstanding! Thank you Ishaan! The nursing staff and PSWs are caring, patient and respectful of the residents. No disgruntled workers here! And the food!!!! Nacer offers high quality, delicous and HEALTHY meals. Everything is fresh and NOTHING is processed. Even Sandro (general manager) takes the time to chat and get to know my dad and our family. His door is always open if we need assistance. As mentioned, it is a trying and emotional experience placing a loved one in a retirement home. The staff at the Grenadier are top notch and continue to make the experience as positive as possible. I feel 100% confident that my father's quality of life has improved dramatically since moving into the Grenadier. Thank you Grenadier staff!!

I would like to say I came into Chartwell Grenadier as a respite client, as I just had a hip replacement and needed a safe place to stay. For sure I did not know what to expect, even though my parents had spent 4 years in a Chartwell in another town. Everything I needed to support my needs was available but of course everything has a price. With that said I had wonderful care from the PSW's who needed to give me showers, and one notable PSW was Maribel who was always caring and I believe was dedicated to her work. The highlight of my stay was the food, always multiple choices if you did not want the main meal. Having both fish and chicken as alternatives and every meal had many vegetables. Kudos to the chefs at Grendier Finally Marie was attentive and available to answer my questions as at times I really did not know what to ask. Thanks to everyone at Grenadier.

The psw's my mother has are very good. She enjoys the food. One problem is that she has had a mouse in her room for months. That hasn't been dealt with to our satisfaction. Also, I feel the communications with admin staff could be better. I don't always get a call back or a follow up call.

Chartwell Grenadier on Bloor street was the perfect place for my friend and her pet dog. Beautiful apartment on a corner unit overlooking Bloor and High Park. Bright and sunny unit has made all the difference. Lots of activities to choose from, outings, movies etc plus the lunch and dinners never disappoint. I’m very impressed with staff and the friendly atmosphere is wonderful. I’d highly recommend Chartwell.

I can only speak of our family’s experience in Assisted Living and I note many of the other reviews tend to be on independent living side of this facility. I have tried to include information I wish I had known when visiting different options. Most front line staff are lovely. Mom felt genuinely cared for by many of them. Also, I have seen them interact with challenging residents and they were always respectful. Most staff try to use simple language with residents who have cognitive issues and or English as a second language. There is also a doctor who comes in weekly. For residents with mobility issues, it is helpful to be able to transfer care to the in house physician, though it is noteworthy there has been a lot of turnover in this role in the past year. Recreational activities also come to the floor daily. As well, there is a dentist office a few doors down and a hair salon on ground floor with access from inside Grenadier despite it being independent of Grenadier. Management for the most part, respond to concerns in a timely manner. Frontline staff are also good at being helping to problem solve issues as they arise. We experienced infrequent laundry mix ups that where eventually sorted out and no real issues with housekeeping. Physically, many of the bathrooms in Assisted Living are poorly designed for those who need mobility devices. The showers are pretty accessible with built in seat. There is only one elevator (and small at that) for Assisted Living residents. EMS for example cannot fit a stretcher without having resident sit up somewhat. I don’t know what staff to resident ratio is elsewhere but overnight, all of Assisted Living has 3 staff covering it, one of whom is a nurse. We had frequent and varied discussions with management around delays in response to personal alarm calls in the overnight period where various issues were identified to be addressed. We did feel management was working to address concerns. Also, initially personal alarms were reinforced as something to be used for emergencies. We found this unrealistic given it is Assisted Living and there is no alternative to the personal alarm for non-emergent requests for help e.g. assistance with toileting wherein care plan identified need for 1 person assist. For those who have concerns about residents wandering, there is a keypad for elevator use in Assisted Living to help with this safety issue. While Grenadier does have a Hoyer lift and does allow for outside assistance to support residents beyond what in house staff do, people have been asked to apply to LTC with Grenadier identifying them as requiring more care than Grenadier can provide (not for behavioural issues).

Twice now, due to an urgent need to find respite care, I placed my 72 year old sister in the Grenadier. I put my trust in their qualified staff. And in Sharon King especially - the community relations manager who welcomed us and helped us navigate the process of becoming a respite resident. My sister Dot, has beginning stage vascular dementia, has always lived alone and is very anxious. She rejects the reality of her own aging, her own needs and her own cognitive decline. She argued about everything. She said no to us more often than yes. We her siblings were so tired. Miraculously, the welcome and care she received at the Grenadier, slowly over-powered her fears. In fact, Her second respite care visit was planned for 2 months but she chose to stay for 6 months! She became tortured about making a decision to stay or leave. She and I spoke with Sharon, who with her significant background with the elderly and her advocacy experience, was able to listen deeply. My sister almost never cries, certainly not in front of people, but she wept. She was able to speak about her confusion and terror at life. Dot lived it up the last few months she was there, and was confident entering the dining room. She participated in the great range of activities and benefited from the nursing and PSW care . She blossomed. She left having some new confidence in herself. Her issues remain the same, but she is not so paralized by her fears. She looks back with a sense of achievement and happiness. We are totally grateful for the Grenadier. And know if she needs respite care again, we would want her there. (Actually, we are hoping she will move in permanently! It would set our minds at rest)

As Seniors REALTORS, we’ve had the pleasure of helping older adults downsize into the Chartwell Grenadier. From independent living to assisted living, the Grenadier offers a full spectrum of care that meets the diverse needs of its residents. Our collaboration with Sharon King, one of the Grenadier’s retirement living consultants, has been exceptional. Sharon’s deep understanding of what new residents want and need makes their transition stress-free. Her expertise is invaluable, and she’s a skilled communicator. We also have the luxury of working with the entire Grenadier team, including their talented chef and the excellent housekeeping staff. Each team member contributes to creating a warm, welcoming environment. Sharon and the Grenadier team are committed to excellence, and it shows in everything they do. If you’re considering a move to a retirement community that truly cares about its residents, we highly recommend the Chartwell Grenadier.

CAN A LAWYER PLEASE STEP UP AND HELP THEM AND LET THEM KNOW THIER RIGHTS. IF YOU LIVE THERE PLEASE SPEAK TO A LAWYER AND GET THE INFORMATION YOU NEED. THE LANDLORD CANNOT EVICT YOU. SO PLEASE DO NOT GET STRESSED OR START PACKING.THIS HAPPENED AT MY BUILDING AND THE LANDLORD LOST IN COURT.

My mom has lived at the Grenadier for four years. She has a lovely small apartment, she enjoys herself there, and she is very well looked after. At 96, she is thriving because of the good care she receives and the wonderful community around her. First and foremost, the staff are all kind, hard-working, professional and have great teamwork to provide support to the residents. There is a culture of kindness, professionalism and caring amongst the staff; they all know the residents and keep a watchful eye out for them. My mother’s needs have changed over the years and the support for her has been adjusted to meet those needs. The food is fabulous, she eats three daily meals in the dining room. The activities offered to residents are excellent; there is a wide range of activities including daily exercise classes, music, and social activities. There is something for everyone, with many concerts scheduled each month. My mom enjoys talking with other residents, and the front lobby and lounge are great places to visit others. The residence is beautifully located close to High Park, the subway, a residential neighbourhood and local parkette, and shopping in Bloor West Village, so there are lots of places to go for walks. The buildings that make up the residence have outdoor terraces and there is a long hallway between the four buildings, which means that even on cold or rainy days, there are many places to roam indoors. I highly recommend the Grenadier retirement residence. It’s been a wonderful place for both my mom and our immediate family.

Our move to Chartwell Grenadier 5 months ago has been a very positive experience. Sharon, Donna and Paola went above and beyond to accommodate our time restrictions for moving in. There are so many positives.a friendly and caring atmosphere, a good choice of activities, delicious meals, and a great location with High Park and interesting shops nearby. Most importantly, there is 24 hour nursing response, and in the future continuum care when needed. We knew we had made the right decision when we started to refer to Chartwell Grenadier as home. My father has been a resident at Chartwell Grenadier for the past 5 years. His comments follow. The Grenadier’s location is excellent - close to High Park, Subway, shops and the public library. My apartment is roomy and comfortable. The support staff are dedicated, friendly, helpful and provide good service. These include Activities, Food Servers (table or tray service), Maintenance, Housekeeping, Front Desk Reception, excellent 24 hour emergency nursing response, new on site physician twice weekly, and Well Being checks. The program managers are kind, helpful, and keen to resolve problems or make improvements. The General Manager is pleasant, kind, and helpful. She is quick to respond to questions or conerns. The General Manager provided good management of service and protection of residents during the recent pandemic.

My mom lives at the Grenadier. She was afraid to move in initially as she thought she might be loosing her independence. She was surprised how much more independence she gained upon moving in. There are so many activities, lots of interesting people to talk to and share experiences with. No more cooking or cleaning, and great care. She needs medication administration and this has really helped since the Grenadier took over that piece. We don’t have to worry if she remembered to take her pills. No more finding random pills on the floor or on the tables. Her diabetes has stabilized as a result too. The staff here are lovely, it is a very warm and friendly environment. You will feel it from the moment you walk in. We love the area as she can get everything she needs on foot and of course there is High Park. Beautiful. The Grenadier very multicultural. Lots of different languages spoken by the residents and staff. A broad age range, some not needing any care and some with various levels of care, all supported as needed. It has given my family great comfort to know they have a continuum care. My mom will never have to leave unless she chooses to. One of my friends parent who was in a different Assisted Living residence was very upset to find she was refused when she was ready to come back from the hospital. Apparently the care she needed upon return was not supported. They are not all the same. She was welcomed to the Grenadeir. This place is like a stationary cruise ship. Your relationship will blossom with your parent cause you get all the good stuff and the Grenadier takes care of the rest.

Hi, Sharon: This was a landmark day for our Family. I'm sure Mum is going to be happy at the Grenadier and being back where she spent memorable times with Dad. Thanks so much for making today seamless - like drawing up the papers on the spot, dealing with Tom, etc. You belong in the Presidents Club! Sharon, Paola and Donna went 'above and beyond' to make sure our Mum's Medical Assessment was booked on a day that suited our Family the best. There is always something special about attending a retirement home tour. I walked into a beautiful retirement home in High Park area of Toronto. It wasn't the trees or walkway that made it special.. there was one thing that stood out to me...it was the residents. I walked into a home that was full of smiles. Every resident there was pleasant, full of life and was being attended too. This was my prelude to what was to come. It was refreshing to share a conversation with the General Manager Lucy, as we have the same values and beliefs. Luciana Vieira thank you for inviting me into your home. Our mother has been at the Grenadier retirement residence for over 5 years. She is so well looked after in Assisted Living. I must compliment the recreation staff. They ensure that our mother participates in so many programs, singing, exercises, games, entertainment and more. There is a monthly calendar that is published so we know what our mom has been doing and we can talk about that during our family visits. The wonderful, enthusiastic and talented recreation staff ensure that activities are modified to accommodate each resident's capabilities. My mother has lived at the Grenadier for almost a year. She had lived in a large condo building before, and enjoys having the sense of life around her as she walks in the hallways or sits in one of the lounges. At the same time she still has the privacy and independence that living in one of the Grenadier Retirement suites allows. We recently had a large family dinner in the dining room, and the food was excellent and the staff were attentive ad thoughtful (as the staff always is with my mother).

Recently (before she passed) our mother - Joyce Elizabeth Hopkins - moved into the Assisted Living portion of The Grenadier Retirement Home which, although not advertised, when the time came also provided pallative care to her. By policy, Grenadier believes each resident has control over their own space, therefore it was possible for us to spend the night(s)with Mum in the unit. I believe this gave her much comfort. On move in day we essentially placed familiar items all around her, recreating the home she had left. Grenadier also wrote letters of support. These letters were essential in allowing my sister to cross the U.S./Canada border. Covid rules mandated that she stay in one place and that place needed to be with Mum. Again we were grateful. As for the PSWs and nurses on her team each and every one was both heroic and an angel. Not one sat down from the time their shift started until the time they left. Feeding (3 meals a day 1 morning snack and 1 afternoon snack), talking and checking in with every resident every day, taking residents to activities and back, laundry, exercise and a host of other responsibilities that happened on a daily basis I believe that if the PSWs were paid three or four times the wages they earn now they have truly earned every penny. These people are, after all, Grenadier's Front Line Workers. Honestly, having heard multiple horror stories of seniors in LTC buildings at the beginning we all had reservations. By the end of her time at Grenadier we all had peace of mind; knowing Mum had been well cared for each and every day, seeing the respect shown to Residents by all staff combined with The Grenadier's emphasis on activities, infection control and cleanliness meant a lot. Knowing she was safe, medically tended to and living in a clean environment gave us all tremendous peace of mind. I only hope a copy of this review finds itself placed in each and every one of the team members' files that worked with Mum. We are and were well satisfied with the care given. (Joyce E. Our mother lived at the Grenadier for 12 years. She chose to move prior to Chartwell’s purchase of the location. At that point everything started to slip. It was evident that they were only concerned with profits over the care for the residents. The deck used by residents fell into disrepair but they built a deck that was too hot to use due to the sun position. It seemed that aesthetics were more important than functionality for seniors . There are too many examples to list. A few employees do a great job and genuinely care, unfortunately that doesn’t make up for many shortfalls that are caused by a corporation that is more concerned with shareholder returns.

My brother lived at the Grenadier for 3 years and I was very pleased by the quality of life he was able to maintain there. The general manager, Lucy Vieira, is superb. She is highly skilled, compassionate, approachable, and a great problem solver. Both she and many of the staff went over and above to help my brother have a good experience. The location is also exceptional. My brother loves nature and being outdoors, so it was ideal to be right across from High Park. He also liked having access to the shops on Bloor Street and quiet neighbourhood walks. Being close to the subway made it easy for friends and family to visit. Choosing Chartwell Grenadier turned out to be a great decision!

I simply cannot say enough good things about The Grenadier Chartwell, its staff and its culture. After looking into the Grenadier for my elderly Uncle before Covid took hold, we decided to pause and see where this was all headed. Come October 2020 we reached out to find that there hadn't been a single outbreak due to the protocols in place and so we moved forward. It wasn't long before a lovely, one bedroom unit became available and my Uncle moved in happily on December 4th. The team at the Grenadier made everything about the transition as smooth and seamless as possible and our family can all rest easy knowing what good hands our loved one is in. As an essential caregiver visitor, I have been able to visit regularly throughout and have seen how well my Uncle is cared for and how much he is enjoying his new residence; he's especially impressed with the food! Frankly, the benefits are too numerous to mention here but suffice it to say that it is a well run, caring, transparent example of what all seniors residences should look like. Thanks and appreciation goes to each and every one of you who have made my Uncle feel at home and for the diligent efforts to keep all the residents safe and healthy. You should be very proud of yourselves, I know I am!

My mother lived at The Grenadier from spring 2017 to summer 2020. Throughout that time her changing functional abilities were well accommodated by all levels of staff at The Grenadier, from dining room hostess to recreational coordinator. She moved from semi-independent to assisted living, with a 3 week interval at a rehab facility in between. Through the pandemic, and then palliation The Grenadier's ability to provide professional and consistent care gave our family a sense of security. He is 94 and losing his vision but he otherwise remains very self-sufficient, he was just ready for a little help. He has been very happy since his arrival. The staff are very friendly and all know his name. He raves about the food from the dining room every time I speak to him. It's wonderful to have onsite medical care when needed. The weekly suite cleaning has made life a little easier for him too. He loves the neighbourhood and really enjoys walks along Bloor St. W. in the nice weather. The team at the Grenadier has managed to adapt to the ever changing public health protocols to keep their residences safe during the pandemic and communication to residents and personal caregivers has been good.

We have been very happy with Chartwell Grenadier. From the very beginning, in working with Michelle, it was a wonderful Experience. She was very attentive, knowledgeable, flexible and kind throughout the process, from our first visit to move in date. My mother was able to have a two week stay (pre Covid) to see if she liked the room/meals etc. This was an excellent option which not all retirement homes offered. Needless to say, we chose this location as her home. It was unfortunate timing with Covid, but I have been very impressed with the staff, their professionalism, as well as their care and kindness with the residents during the pandemic. I would recommend this location without hesitation. Who knows, I too may move in one day!!!

My in laws had the pleasure of living at the Grenadier for over 4 years. During their stay, they felt supported by the warm and caring staff. The variety of programs offered to the residents were engaging and fostered opportunities for residents to connect with each other. The Grenadier provided a smooth transition from their home and introduced them to a new social community and we are very grateful to the kindness of the staff for facilitating this.

As a Harp Therapist I had the pleasure of facilitating both harp and bell programs. They were all-inclusive sessions with fantastic teamwork between family members, staff and residents. I was able to engage residents to participate using various skills such as visual and auditory, social interaction, singing, and playing instruments which involves the use of fine motor skills. A love for "Mozart" and the "paper plate dance" (Elena's favourite) allowed me to sneak in some exercise and movement using range of motion while seated. Needless to say, an action packed 60 minutes full of smiles and laughter is sheer joy for all!! The staff is totally aware of the needs and wants of the residents as well as the challenges which is obvious by the various program offerings.

I want to acknowledge the hard working staff at the Grenadier! My mother-in-law moved in 9 month ago, and they have done a great job manoeuvring through the unpredictability of Covid 19. Dealing with Will Cara (our Retirement Living Consultant) has been a pleasure. He has been professional, supportive and it is clear that he cares about the residents. Since Kerry Stewart has taken over as ED, communication has been great, which is key when you have a loved one living there. Many thanks to all!

The Grenadier took amazing care of my mother through the last four years of her life. it was a wonderful place for her when she was physically well and when she came to need much more care. The staff were kind and caring and very skilled!

My mum is 96 and has some cognitive decline that means she can't manage on her own. She's been at Grenadier Assisted Living for a year and describes it as her " 'appy little 'ome." The staff have been great with her since she arrived. She had a few weeks' adjustment where she was miserable and confused at the change, and they were so kind and got her through it with lots of care. The staff seem to genuinely love her. There's lots of activities (although Covid has curtailed them) and a really nice dining room. They've done an amazing job keeping Covid out of the whole complex (there's independent living as well) and although there have been unavoidable outbreaks, they've been "on it" and they keep us really well-informed. It's a good choice, I think.

Dear Elena , My mother Maria Styranka has been in the Grenadier retirement home for the past 5 years ! I must say that she has enjoyed most of her time there ! The social activities were especially important for her and they were done with a lot of care and patience ! All the sport activities were also very well conducted and she was a regular member there . The dining area was also a treat for her - and the food was to her liking . My mother very often spoke to me about the wonderful and attentive staff in the kitchen and dining room ! Of course with the onset of the Covid virus the organization of the home was different and quite complicated -however my mother still managed quite well with the extra help of the Chartwell staff . Hopefully this virus will soon die off and I will be able to come and visit her !! Thank you for making my mother’s daily life easier . All the best Chrystyna Salam

As an eldercare consultant, I feel confident recommending the Grenadier to clients. This facility has recently had some refurbishment, and although the building has held a well-established position on Bloor West for many years, the care and programming, common spaces and amenities, and private rooms, are completely up-to-date. The staff are caring, kind and reliable, and always ready to answer questions or concerns openly and in a timely manner. A further bonus is that sits right in front of High Park, where guests can go and enjoy strolling among the trees.

For the past couple of years I have been a regular speaker and bus tour leader at Chartwell Grenadier. I have always received a very warm welcome and I love the interest and enthusiasm shown by the residents in my talks about local history and travel. I always look forward to speaking there.

I have a friend who is a resident of the Grenadier. She, being unable to take care of herself, knows that someone is always a buzz away, should she need assistance. She has had to take advantage of that a couple of times. The staff are certified health care workers not nurses, but everyone has been helpful and friendly anytime I visit. I also know that the meals are hot and prepared on time and done in a social session where tables are shared with 2 or three other people. The few times that she has been unwell, they do allow her to eat in her room, for her safety as well as the other residents. It is not ideal for someone who has been independant and mobile their entire lives, but it is a much needed peace of mind knowing that you are looked after by responsible and caring people.

Elena and staff threw a total blow-out party for my husband's grandfather's 110th birthday, and it was amazing! She also put together a beautiful memorial for us this year, when the grandfather passed away. Much, much thanks!
