Our experience with most of the caregivers has been excellent. The best days of the week are Wed-Sat when Jennifer Z the activity caregiver is working. She makes every resident feel special and loved, finding activities that they each like!! She is the shining star at Mary B's in Portage!! There are many growing pains with the new administration currently. I do not feel like I am being heard all of the time. As per Bickford policy, our family members should have activities every day for 6+ hours. Unfortunately when Jennifer Z is not there the TV is on and that is the activity!

Jennifer's approach and leadership as the Executive Director are commendable. She listens, address issues, and steers Bickford of Portage in a positive direction. From my perspective, Jennifer upholds high standards, clearly communicates expectations, ensures accountability, offers well-deserved recognition, and fosters a fun work environment. I've also heard the news of Theresa's return, which is wonderful. While my interactions with her have been limited, I found her truly exceptional, and her departure was regrettable. The fact that esteemed individuals like Theresa are returning reflects positively on the atmosphere Jennifer is cultivating. Thank you, Jennifer and the entire Bickford team. We love seeing your improvements and outstanding efforts!

I went on a tour with the most compassionate, friendly, Bickford employee. She took the time to listen to my concerns and patiently answered all my questions and then some. I feel so comfortable with the thought of my loved one becoming at resident when the time comes.

Since my grandmother move here from Brookdale the care has been exceptional! I know she was nervous for the move. However, she is more active and involved in activities than she has ever been. I can't say enough about Erin as the activities director! The Director sends weekly update emails and keeps all of us well informed. The nursing staff has made medication adjustments that have helped her so much. We are so happy to see her smiling again!

My mother-in-law Barb lived at Bickford in Portage for just under 4 months in 2019. Barb was 87 years old and was riding the Alzheimer's train. Barb's family was very, very pleased with Bickford's care for Barb and Barb's family. Barb's family carefully assessed 5 other potential facilities in the Portage area and felt the most comfort and confidence about Bickford of Portage. Our first impressions were that Director Janna and RN Kim were very caring but with a firm and professional get-it-done attitude. As local family members my wife and I saw Bickford under routine conditions very frequently. In every observation we saw leadership and staff in caring and get-it-done mode. When adjustments in care levels, medications, eating arrangements, etc. were deemed appropriate, changes were made promptly. I never sensed that decisions were motivated by the bottom financial line. An unexpected advanced cancer diagnosis quickly changed Barb's health trajectory. Bickford helped the family with a smooth transition to hospice care. When Barb quietly died in her sleep at Bickford a few weeks later we continued to see many touching moments of sincere caring from leadership and staff. Special thanks from Barb's family to Janna, Kim, and the entire Portage Bickford staff, top to bottom.

My parents moved into Bickford 6 1/2 years ago (Feb 2014). My mom needed memory care and my Dad wanted to stay with my mom. The beauty and strength of Bickford is their ability to care for memory care and senior care and keep couples together to allow them to continue living as husband and wife. My parents always loved their together time and Bickford made that happen in a beautiful way. When my Mom needed to move to 24/7 memory care in early 2017 at the Mary B, Bickford made the transition happen with thoughtful planning, love and care. My Mom's care until her passing Nov2018 was consistently amazing. Memory care is a strength. My Dad passed away a few weeks ago with the entire Bickford family bidding him goodbye with love care and support. Janna has a Herculean task keeping the talented staff and keeping a pulse on all of the dynamics such a place creates and she has been such a strong reliable connection to my folks for me with excellent communication and insights I valued. Cheryl and Kim have been there for me and my family throughout many challenges, changes in care plans and unexpected requests and (without fail) delivered whatever they could for my folks with a 'can do - I'll do' attitude. I was always thankful that my folks had the care and support they had at Bickford. The caregivers there were truly extended family for my parents for over six years. My Dad never had one bad word to say about Bickford, and he always had plenty to say, as Bickford would attest to. We made the right choice when we made that difficult choice for my folks and I would do the same again. Thanks for everything, Bickford of Portage. 🙂

My mom was a resident for over 5 years. I will say that she took the whole day for her to say goodbye to her house. We finally got her out of her home in her pj's and the greeting crew at Bickford all stayed to say "welcome". I can not tell you the stress her family felt as we were sure she would need one of us to stay with her all night. Janna and Jamie (RN at that time) assured us she would be fine. They fed her and were checking on her all night. She refused to go to lunch the next day, so they had a couple that was going to be at her table talk to her and encourage her to come to lunch, and she did! She was difficult at times, but before long she did not want to leave. She felt meals were like going out to a restaurant. After a few years they encouraged me to take her off her drugs to control anger, and now looking back we probably could have done it sooner. Her doctor never thought knowing her as he did that she would ever be "content" and she was! His compliments to the staff! You know all of this was possible as the staff greeted this very shy, quiet woman with a warm smile and a "hello Peggy". She loved the cooks and she made a special effort to tell them how good the meals were. I always complimented Janna on her ability to hire excellent staff. In the years we were there the staff became our friends. I never heard my mother complain about a staff member. Theresa when my brother died stayed with my mom, sat with her and they discussed losing a child. She was such a blessing to my mom at such a difficult time. At the end the nursing staff kept right on my mom to be sure all her needs were met. I believe they all cared about this shy quiet lady who in the past was angry and we realized that the anger was fear of being alone. But the anger she had was all before she came to Bickford. Never a outburst like we saw when she was at her home. At "home" she was lonely and sad and at Bickford she was surround by people who cared. Were the years perfect, no, but to have this woman leave her house after 67 years and then never want to leave Bickford , a place that kept her safe and secure and she even made a few friends. So thank you Janna and Kim and all the staff for giving my mom a peaceful end to her life. Mary (Malnight) Honeysett

My grandmother spent her last many years at Bickford. The staff was always wonderful and took great care of her. We couldn't be more grateful for the love they showed her every day.

My grandfather spent his final months at bickford and my grandmother is still in the Mary B's (the dementia care unit). Their staff is AMAZING when my grandfather was on his death bed multiple aids would come over on their breaks and see how he was doing. My grandmother LOVES it there feels right at home. I can't express how much I love these people and how comforted they made us feel if I could give them more then 5 stars I would! This is a REALLY great place!

I was impressed with Bickford as I visited my grandmother several times. In her last days I can't thank the nurses and staff enough for how well they not only treated my Grandmother, Florence, but how well they treated the family, as we hung around day and night until the end. My grandmother was not a number in their eyes... She was their friend. Thank you, thank you, thank you
