As a Hospice Care Consultant for St. Maries Hospice I visit many Assisted living community's. What is compelling me to rate Serene Gardens of Sterling Heights is the warm feeling I felt as soon as I entered the building. The receptionist greeted me with cheerful Hello, and how can I help you? She showed me where I could sit and wait until Jenna Shelby (Executive Director). Jenna welcomed me in and led me into her office. We had a wonderful conversation and she answered my questions. She walked me to the doors after the meeting, she thanked me for coming in and gave me a hug before I left. It is not often I visit a community that from the minute I walk in the door felt welcomed to the minute I stepped out of the community. I rate Serene Gardens a 5 star ratings and look forward to working with them.

Spent a lot of time searching and visiting assisted living facilities for my loved one. Came upon Serene Gardens and was immediately impressed with the building itself. Met with Jenna the Executive Director who was knowledgeable, compassionate and took the time to listen and get to understand the unique situation we had. She was up front and honest on the pros and cons of the facility and took extra time showing me around, explaining different rooms and areas. I wanted to wait awhile and let the dust settle before writing a review. After a little over 6 months I know we made the right choice. Food is tasty, caregivers and staff are friendly - they say hello not only to visitors, but I see them interacting with all residents, even if not in their area. The residents seem happy, daily and weekly activities (movies, bingo, and the favorite Wine Down Friday get togethers), outings and the outside patio was a great sitting area during the summer

Tonight I went to the trick-or-treating event and it was even better than last year. And that is a tough year to beat! The staff did an amazing job with all the residents, making sure they all had candy for the kids. The Activity staff always plan great events, and Jenna now being the Executive Director hasn’t changed a thing about her because she is even more involved then ever! Great job staff!

Serene Gardens of Sterling Heights has had a bumpy road with staffing the last couple of months, thank God for jenna the activities Director, Who has been multitasking and doing many other jobs to keep this place running smooth and making sure all residents are taken care of including my mom. She has integrity and truly cares about the residence. Without her help I would have considered an alternative place, but because of her, I am confident that my mom will thrive there now, I hope this establishment will recognize what a valuable employee she is and she gets some recognition on all her hard work! It is people like her that can put loved one’s mind’s at ease that they are being taken care she goes above and beyond!

Very light bright extended care facility. They seem to have lots of fun activities and food excellent menus. Private rooms are large, well appointed and they allow for personal furnishings and decor. Only improvements would be more staff as room bound residents aren't checked on very often during the day.

My mom is very happy to be living here which makes me happy! Having to move in during a terrible time in our lives, I was worried about my mom's mental health. God sent her 2 amazing angel's, Jenna and Silvana. She has met people and goes to all activities, which I never thought she would do. When we were searching metro Detroit for an assisted living for a family member, we came across Serene Gardens. It’s not close to our home, but we decided to check it out because of a recommendation. When we went on the tour the first thing we noticed was it was bright, and didn’t have that typical nursing home smell to it. The apartments were all freshly painted and modern looking. The residents were all over in the common areas and none of them looked depressed or like they were forced to be sitting in a corner alone to get out of their rooms. They have a lot a daily activities, sporting watch parties, their own movie theater in house, a hair and nail service, laundry service, and their menu is like nothing I have seen in any assisted living facility. We did choose this facility for our family member and I’m not going to tell you everything has been perfect. There have been some issues with personal supplies being shared to other residents (that has been taken care of), and issues with having enough staff to help our family member out of bed (they require 2 people), but everywhere in health care has issues with staffing right now, and they do seem to be working on it. She is regularly cleaned up and linens changed no matter the staffing level. However, with the staff they do have, the caregivers there get to know the residents they care for, and the management does take time to address concerns and try to make everything right. Our family member says the food is very good, and often says things like there was too much shrimp in my alfredo or my dessert was too big. (What a problem to have) Overall I’d recommend this facility to anyone looking for an assisted living. It’s well maintained, staff is friendly, you can visit 24 hours a day if you’d like, and they make sure your loved one is fed, cleaned, and medications given. (Photo was before we had everything hung on walls and some furniture was out of place, but you can see it’s large and bright for a solo room)

Jenna Shelby is WONDERFUL!!! She has made a huge difference in getting my brother, Frank to be more social. Her positive attitude and cheerfulness is great. You can see it in how the other residents respond to her. My brother has suffered from depression and social anxiety and now with the care and concern of Jenna he is doing very well. I'm so grateful for the help she has given to my brother. I hope she will be on staff at Serene Gardens for a long, long time.

He came from a lonely environment and once here, he just took on a whole new life. He became a participant in everything, and enjoyed being around people so much. Don't let the beauty of this place fool you! While it's very modern and has nice amenities, the care is horrible. Our mom was there for 3+ years, and each year we watched her care decline over that time. The management staff changed at least 5 times while she was there; the caregiver staff was a revolving door of people leaving. Our mom has dementia and needed extra care for toilet and hygiene. She was never given it consistently. Her room smelled of urine every week that we visited, and her soiled laundry sat piled on the floor. It was obvious they let her soil herself and rarely changed or bathed her. She was constantly falling because she tried to get herself to the bathroom because they didn't do it as much as she needed. Caregivers often were in their own world, on their phones, not paying attention to the residents. We had to become our mom's advocate every week that we visited, i.e., cleaning; removing soiled garbage, because we had no confidence in her care. We also experienced a horrible situation of her toiled being clogged with feces for at least 5 days. No one had bothered to clean it! Again, it was obvious no one had been helping her use the toilet. Such disgusting neglect on their part. When we asked a caregiver if there was a maintenance person to fix over the weekend, all we got was a "no". Needless to say, it wasn't until I sent a photo of it to management that they finally got it fixed. When asked of management, no one seemed to know why it wasn't addressed. Apparently they aren't following health codes. If your loved one needs extra care, do not bring them here! They don't have the staff to manage all of their residents, nor do they care enough to keep the facility clean and organized. Furthermore, Food is subpar; there was never a regular laundry or maintenance person on staff, and mom's clothes were constantly lost and she was given other resident's clothes. Several other residents also left at the time our mom left (approx 2 months ago). Since moving mom to a new facility, we have been amazed by all the care that she is now getting and how differently it's managed. We've experience genuine kindness and professionalism; calls to let us know mom is doing; an onsite nurse; personal laundry that doesn't get mixed up; quick assistance for anything we inquire about--none of which we received while at Serene Gardens in the past year.

We had to cut our vacation short after hearing about the problems our son was having. I had no idea that they did not have adequate staff to take care of his needs. The aids dropped him on the floor one evening. We never got that report from anyone and I’m wondering if anyone there was notified. He has two bruises on his leg. No gait belts, no hoyer. We were told that the hoyers are privately owned and they couldn't use them but their pamphlet clearly states they have them. He was in tears (which he has never done) telling me he had to wait to go to the bathroom and wet himself. He again called to say that he had been waiting and ended up peeing in a wastebasket next to his bed not once but twice. We had family come since we were so concerned. Family had given him his showers and did his laundry. He had stayed here twice before without incident.
