It was a difficult decision to move Mom out of her home and into a senior residence, but Brookdale West Orange made the decision easier. The property is lovely and well-maintained. Her apartment is spacious, bright and cozy. She loves the food and activities and has come to love her fellow residents. This is a friendly and lively community. Always something good going on. We are very thankful to have found Brookdale West Orange.

Editing this in response to the response from owners. The phone # they left is not correct: it goes to an orthopedic office! I apologize for my review, it was far too cynical: I was in a bad mood. I'm revising it and may simply delete it. If you would like to speak to me, please leave a correct phone #; it seems there was an error. I have a friend in the Memory Care unit there and I feel like it's not working for her very well. It's a small unit and very dull and there is not enough physical activity. I know they have to be safe but it's more like a cage and it's heartbreaking. The staff are lovely for the most part but they are not many and a couple of them seem mean, though I know they need to be firm and handle memory care residents a certain way and also within a set amount of time. But they are not sensitive to the needs and feelings of my friend, in my opinion. I want to be there more myself but I can't right now. It's a hard job to care for the residents there, and really the staff are remarkable. Stellar, in fact: some of them. In fact, I take back what I just said, because several of them know very well that simply smiling at my poor friend does wonders, and this one caregiver had a brilliant, genuine smile and wasn't afraid to keep it on her face and brighten the day of my friend and anyone else. Yes, most of the staff were really good - even great - and they did a great job in physical caring for my friend as well as emotional. I don't feel that residents are treated like "mindless zombies," as I wrote. And I certainly take back the other thing I said, especially since the replyer below assures that they care about their clients. My friend is in need of extra care, it seems, and it does Not seem that that was provided, at least not as much as the family is paying for! There are activities, and they're mostly appropriate for the level of abilities of the memory care folks. I Still feel that there could be more physical activity somehow, but perhaps it's not feasible. I also still feel that my friend's intellectual needs as well as her physical needs are not met. Her interests do not coincide with what is available, though it's not as bad as all that. I do feel that my friend has declined more rapidly than was necessary. There were Not the outings advertised when they were in the main part. I still feel that the water is not fresh or frequent enough, that giving them Kool-Aid or soda pop at lunch and dinner should be less emphasized and that fresh fruit could be offered instead of ice cream, although if a person is at the end of their days, maybe they should just have ice cream. The main purpose of the response to my review is probably to get rid of the bad review rather than really address concerns, so I might just delete or rewrite this in time, since I probably don't understand or appreciate all the ins and outs of memory care. Brookdale at West Orange is a clean and nice-looking place. There is no neglect. The staff are very competent in their medical care and all their care, and many the same care-givers have been there for the whole time I've seen the unit (about 1.5 years), so that's a very good sign as it's very important to have that stability. So they Must care: I think Brookdale works hard to find caring and capable staff. I am just sad and frustrated for my friend. So maybe if you really want to talk to me, there could actually be some improvement or at least understanding on my part.

I had a great experience with my Father at Brookdale Senior living in West Orange. He was in hospice there and needed comfort care for 2 weeks. The staff and nurses were so compassionate and caring. Lynda, Diana, Deborah, Trishia and all the nurses and staff were Amazing! The space is bright compared to many we have visited. It’s hidden behind beautiful trees for privacy. Oh! I loved the happy hour too! The food was good and facility was very clean. He wore a necklace that buzzed when he needed nurse service and they would come to help. I hope you would consider having your loved one here. It comforted our family that he was in a good place during his last days with staff tending to him when needed. ™

Brookdale West Orange is a great value for the amenities you receive. My friend has recently begun his residency there and has been treated very well from the start. The staff is friendly. They exhibit great patience when working with their residents, especially those who might not readily accept their new living situation. The facility is very clean and the food is excellent. Overall, this has been a wonderful experience so far.

My mother is a new resident. The Assisted Living facility where she lived for the last three years went out of business. The Director of that facility referred me to Brookdale. That’s when I met Danial. He is a wonderful young man. He arranged to have all my mom’s furniture moved. My fears of having to rent a truck and find people to help were relieved. Some of my mom’s items were missing and Danial referred me to where I can replace them with a significant discount. I know it sounds nuts that I would appreciate having my mother’s stuff stolen and then seek to replace it. However, Danial stepped right up and provided a solution. When you walk in it looks just like her previous residence. Everyone, is friendly and approachable. Today, I had a lengthy conversation with Carol, a resident. We stopped at the same time to read a prayer on someone’s door. I love Brookdale and its staff thus far, oh so does Carol.

My mother and father both entered Brookdale in August of 2015 - we were sold on the fact that there was a medicaid program and memory care unit at Brookdale West Orange ... in case they needed it down the line... My father passed a month later on my 41st birthday in 2015, leaving mom at Brookdale until we moved her into the Clare Bridge memory care unit September of 2019. Mariam and the team in the memory care unit are extraordinary. I suggested to my cousins they move my Uncle to brookdale, and sure enough Bohdan and my mom were eating at the same table again. I really enjoyed when she was in "general population" - plenty of activities, and let me say, the staff has been through the ringer with COVID - even lost a valued staffer - but the care for our families continued in an extraordinary fashion . My mom is generally always happy - she tells she feels safe - thats all I need - I am so grateful that she is at Brookdale West orange - contact me for more info - Peter Z

Wonderful event at Brookdale West Orange yesterday. Their Residents were all around and socializing with everyone as well. I learned that this is daily life for them, it was nice to see such happy faces! The food served was both delicious and healthy. My mother has lived at Brookdale West Orange since 2014. She has been very happy there and likes the food as well. The staff is wonderful and are always very helpful and supportive. Jay Brooks, the current director, has been one of the best directors she has had since she arrived. He has made this very tough time as bearable as possible. He treats the residents as family. All of the workers do the same. My brothers and sisters and I are very happy with the care our mother receives every day.

3rd "Executive Director" in 7 months. Staff tries hard but cannot consistently perform duties. Mom's dinner was still not brought to her room as of 7pm... again. 12% increase in rate for 2022. Hoping new director can iron things out. Food is excellent btw.

Our experience with Jay and his staff at Brookdale was outstanding! From our first tour until my father in law passed away, we knew he would be well cared for---I found every staff member kind, helpful and patient. My calls and emails were always returned while Dad enjoyed his new home for 2 years. I felt welcome there and when it came time to pack up his things they pitched in to help--saying goodbye was difficult. Choosing Brookdale , after looking at many facilities , was EASY--I knew we found the best home in North Jersey for Dad.

My mother has been in the memory care unit of Brookdale West Orange since June 2020. My siblings and I have been thrilled with the care that she receives there. The responsiveness of the staff and their attention to our mother's physical healthcare needs, as well as personal hygiene and her emotional well-being, has been outstanding. They make her feel special and cared for, which has been so important to us during these difficult times of the pandemic when we cannot visit with her. Jay Brooks, the director, has done an incredible job communicating to family and friends of the residents the precautions that have been taken for the pandemic, the current status of the residents and staff, the special things that were being done for the holidays and helping us to feel connected to our mom with ongoing zoom calls with him and with our mother. Jay's concern for the residents and the staff is unique compared with other facilities where our mother has lived. We could not be happier with our selection of Brookdale West Orange for our mother.

My Mom Florence Russo has been a resident at Brookdale Senior Living for over a year and a half. I spent a year researching and visiting several assisted living facilities in NJ before selecting Brookdale West Orange. My main reason for picking this Brookdale was the staff of loving caring people. The facility is a good size and well kept. Chef Bill does a great job with the menu also, but most importantly Mom is happy and safe there.
