We had private care for my mom Marie at home (home helpers) it was a disaster. I got in touch with Sunrise as my dad was there quite a while ago. We were so pleased with them. We had to wait a bit for an opening as soon as they had one we moved her in right away. Surprisingly her transition from home to Sunrise was amazing it was like she had been there all along. The staff is remarkable and so accommodating. Believe me I’ve been in contact with them almost daily. They send me updates and pictures of her often. My brother and I are so amazed and grateful for them it’s hard to explain I could keep on going. Chris Sbragia

My sister moved our mother into Sunrise this January. Sunrise staff assessed and chose the service level and team to care for her. She was given a spacious room with a sitting area and everything she needed. Being a picky eater, the kitchen and dining staff did a nice job to accommodate that. Annie and her daily care team kept her happy. At one point I asked mom what she thought of her arrangement there and she expressed that she liked her room, there was nothing she was missing, nothing she would change, she was happy. Everyone there was very nice to her and responded to individual requests kindly. Thankfully Annie and her team were able to coordinate FaceTime visits and share videos to keep in touch via cellphone. A special thank you to everyone and the Hospice staff for their care. Would highly recommend Sunrise for their care, communication and comfort. Tim W

My 93 yr old father has been a resident at Sunrise since start of August. The facility is beautiful. The staff is caring and attentive. The food is good. He enjoys the activities. For what could be a very challenging transition (from independent living to assisted), it has gone really well.

Sunrise of San Mateo is a warm and caring community with a wide variety of activities to keep seniors active and engaged. They put a great deal of thought into the Plan of Care for each resident, and allow for flexibility as needs change. We were greatly impressed by the empathy and one-on-one attention from everyone we worked with, from senior level staff down to caregivers. Highly recommend.

My Mom has been at been at Sunrise Assisted Living for six months. My Mom is happy living there, she is active in the many daily activities that are offered to residents, and she likes the food! Both the other residents and the care team members are very friendly and welcoming. The care team has been very good at selecting the right service level for my Mom and communicating when any health or other issues arise. The care team members who are assigned to my Mom and help her with daily activities like bathing and medication management are very positive and competent and have shown they really care about my Mom and her well being. The dining room team members are also very competent and accommodating of personal tastes and special requests. I'm very happy we chose Sunrise and would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for assisted living.

As a vendor providing an essential services to Assisted Living & Memory care, I truly admire the quality of care and overall atmosphere. The staffs/CNA's are not just professional but also compassionate. Taking care the residents like it's their family. They make sure that the residents receive the highest standard support and care. One aspect that separates the Sunrise of San Mateo apart is it's focus on giving a vibrant and engaging community lead by Joann. I can tell that the residents always look for her and wanted to chat with her. Joann made the residents feel that they are being heard and helped. She leads the team that go above and beyond their service. 

We moved my mom from out of state to live near us at Sunrise of San Mateo in October 2023. The relief that I feel knowing that her needs are being taken care of is incredible. Mom's care managers are patient, kind and treat her with respect. When she first moved in she was recovering from an illness and we expected her care needs to be high. Joanne Gutierrez, the Assisted Living Coordinator, approached me on the third day to arrange a meeting to re-assess my mom's care needs. The team had already seen an increase in her independence and felt that she could move to a more independent level of care. Alma, Jusely, Rashmi, Gisela and Carmen make up her care team. They look out for her and make sure that she is getting to meals and encourage her to try the daily activities. When my mom overdid her walking and hurt her knee the team did an amazing job of taking care of her and getting her back on her feet quickly. Shirley, Alma and Norma are very encouraging and make the family feel like we are part of their team. Joanne made it clear that she wants her team to get to know the residents in their care and I feel like they do a wonderful job of it. This was a hard decision for us to uproot our mom and we are so grateful to have found the community at Sunrise of San Mateo

I appreciate the philosophy of Assisted Living Coordinator Joanne of having people out in the community with activities; there is much liveliness there, something I felt was lacking at my father's prior residence.I also like that several of the nursing staff have been here for many years, which to me is an indication of good work place.

Sunrise of San Mateo is a beautiful assisted living home and offers great care to the residents and their families. Their hard working and caring staff keep our mom safe, assist in her daily routine, and support her to maintain as much independence as she wants. The management staff is always open to discuss changes or concerns with her care and always offer suggestions and advice to improve her physical and mental well-being. Our mom enjoys having a variety of activities everyday, especially the exercise class and frequent live entertainment. We like that Sunrise of San Mateo is a smaller size community and everyone is treated like family. Thank you to Sunrise of San Mateo for being attentive and caring to our loved ones and for providing an open and engaging relationship with their families.

I visited a few assisted living facilities on the Peninsula and this was the best fit for my dad. The lobby, dining and activity areas are attractively decorated and clean. Nice outdoor patio areas as well. Joanne, the assisted living coordinator, has been very helpful ensuring my questions are answered and my dad gets what he needs.

I want to give a high marks to the Care Staff at Sunrise of San Mateo. My Mother lived there for 10 years before we had to recently move her to another facility. I give very high marks to all the Care Staff but especially to Joanne, Assisted Living Coordinator; Lisa, Activities Coordinator, Teresa, M-F Concierge; Princess and Jennifer, weekend Concierges; and Care Managers: Salita, Shirley, Ben, Carmen, Filole, Alma and many others; Medication managers Norma and Loa and all medication and nursing staff; all the members of the dining staff and maintenance staff. All of the staff at Sunrise of San Mateo always had my Mother's best interests in mind when caring for her. I appreciate them all, give them all very high marks and will miss all of them very much as they were like family to us. My Mother's time at Sunrise of San Mateo was very enjoyable and I trusted them to take care her at the highest level. Thank you.

Highly recommend Sunrise San Mateo! From the moment I stepped into the facility it felt like home! The staff is so warm and engaging and the facilities are beautiful. From the entering the lobby and being greeted, to the cozy living area with fireplace, the library with books and tables for puzzles, to the cafe where there is always an activity going on to the white table cloth dining room where the residents gather for breakfast, lunch and dinner. My mom, who requires assisted living level 1-2 care for dementia, is very happy! Their skilled nurses and care team engage all the residents and treat them like family. They are also very communicative with updating the family and are also super flexible with the level of care needed as changes do occur. The residents are always happy and many are active in the multiple activities they offer throughout the day and evening. My mother specifically loves the fact that she can be independent in her own apartment (kitchen/bath) even though she needs a structured agenda and reminders to do things. She loves the services they provide including hairdresser, laundry, house cleaning, and most importantly meal time! I feel blessed to have found such an amazing place to care for her throughout her memory care journey.

My sister and I moved our Mom into Sunrise of San Mateo approximately 2 years ago. We were lucky to secure a one bedroom that had enough space for the things she liked to be surrounded with. Mom’s care team was always excellent - keeping us up to date on her physical and mental health. They always encouraged her to participate in the social aspects that Sunrise offers. When Mom’s mobility declined they encouraged us to move her into a smaller unit - so they could monitor her more closely. This suggestion and attentiveness for our Mom was really appreciated. The whole staff at Sunrise is warm and caring and our experience was very positive!

The Sunrise Community opened their arms to my Girl Scout Brownie troop in the Fall on 2022. We came by to visit and play game with the residents. Lisa the resident director was amazing at preparing the residents for our arrival. We have very fond memories of that day!

Sunrise provided excellent service in the memory care floor and was always responsive to my mother's needs. They do make a real effort to keep the residents active to the extent they can be, and have concerts and live music and holiday parties for all residents. It is as if they are staying in a luxury hotel, and the food is good as well. The caregiving staff were fantastic.

Sunrise of San Mateo has been a wonderful experience for my dad and my family. The care managers provide excellent care and are always so kind. The nurses make sure to inform me of even the slightest change in my dad and listen and respect my wishes with regards to his care. During the pandemic a new Executive Director joined the staff and she is so kind and makes sure to follow-up swiftly whenever I call or have a concern. The place is so clean that you could eat off the floor! i would recommend this assisted living facility to anyone looking to place a family member. They really go the extra step to make sure the residents that live there are happy and well cared for. Cudos to the staff of Sunrise of San Mateo!

A five star rating for Sunrise San Mateo is well deserved. Having had my mother in an assisted living home prior, I have the ability to compare. In my opinion there is no comparison. My mother came to Sunrise San Mateo in Hospice. The care she has received from the staff is incredible. They pay attention to detail and actually care about my mother. They coordinate with Hospice and I truly do no worry about my Mother now that she is there. I know that if even the slightest incident takes place, i.e., a small cut on the hand, I receive a phone call immediately. The residents are friendly, welcoming and very happy. It's a smaller facility so it is easier for people to get to know one another. They have activities taking place all of the time. I believe a great Assisted Living Facility is 'great' because the care starts at the top. The Executive Director, Director of Sales, nursing staff, and the care staff all have the right attitude. They are responsive, friendly and get to know the residents AND their families. I highly recommend Sunrise San Mateo and am grateful my Mom is there

My mother has been at Sunrise of San Mateo for about a month and is doing very well. All of the staff is extremely friendly and considerate. Any time my brother or I stop in to check on her, she is always involved in some sort of activity and is very happy. She had an incident the other day with her dementia, and the staff has been very good about handling her and keeping us engaged and informed. They have been very nice to her, as well as to my brother and I.
