My sister has been at Sunrise of San Mateo for 3 years. I am very satisfied with her care. The nursing staff is always responsive to her needs as well as to any questions I might have. They keep me well informed regarding her progress ( or lack of), for which I am very grateful since I live 2 hours away and can only visit in person every few weeks Joanne, as her case manager, has been particularly involved in her care. She works very hard to resolve any issues or concerns I may have and my sister’s well being is always first and foremost during discussions about her care. Theresa, the Concierge, is especially kind and helpful. She is well informed and competent regarding facility operations as well as the needs of all residents. She always makes the extra effort whenever I visit or reach out by phone.. Overall, I would highly recommend Sunrise of San Mateo to anyone who is looking into Assisted Living for a family member.

Mom needed more care so we looked at 6+ places in the area and was very impressed by Sunrise during our visit. The staff and residents were all friendly and welcoming, and the place has a really strong community feeling. A few months later now and all dimension have exceeded our expectations. The dining services accommodated Mom’s dietary restrictions. She is so well cared for round-the-clock. Most of all, they are patient, warm, and often just stop in to chat with Mom. Sunrise has far exceeded our expectations!

My Mom has been at Sunrise of San Mateo since February of this year. (2026) I cannot adequately express how caring, dedicated and kind the staff is. And not just to the residents which is a big enough job in itself, but also to the family members of the residents. Each and every day, they show up and give 100%, if not more. In the 5 months that my Mom has been there, the staff has come to feel like our extended family. From the warm and welcoming greetings from the front desk staff, the caring nursing team that constantly keeps me updated on how my Mom is doing and strive to take the best possible care of each of the residents, the dining room staff who always have a smile on their faces, the kitchen staff, cooks and the Dining Services Coordinator who work hard to prepare nutritious meals for the residents, the Admin team who always make themselves available to answer any questions, no matter how small (or silly) and who keep everything running smoothly behind the scenes and the Activities Director who plans such diverse, interesting and FUN activities for the residents, Sunrise of San Mateo truly is top notch! I always look forward to going there, not only to see my sweet Mom, but also to see all of the other residents and the staff, too. It absolutely means everything to me that when my friends and co workers ask me how my Mom is doing at Sunrise, I can confidently say that my Mom is doing GREAT and really thriving at Sunrise. I chose Sunrise for my Mom after touring at least 6 different senior living places, because it felt really warm and welcoming and homey. And every day since she moved in, I can honestly say that I still feel that way and more importantly, my Mom feels that way about Sunrise, too. I am forever grateful.

After looking at multiple facilities, I found Sunrise of San Mateo! They have a special wing dedicated for Alzheimer’s, and my husband was happy, comfortable, and engaged in activities. My 94+ yr old father has been a resident at Sunrise since start of August 2024. I do not have enough positive things to say about Sunrise. While the place "checks the boxes" on all the physical aspects (beautiful and well kept facility, dining experience, etc..), what differentiates the place are the people. He is at a stage where he both needs extensive support and can be forgetful - a challenging combination. I have been constantly taken by how caring and patient everyone is toward my father. They not only do an amazing job supporting him, it is very clear that they care about him as a person (which is priceless). I was very nervous when we moved my father in as it is a massive change to undergo at any age (and especially when very old). My dad feels at home there now and it is due to the kindness and care of the staff.

Sunrise was one of 4 facilities my brother in law and I toured in San Mateo for my sister who was needing a lot of assistance for dementia. First impressions are important and Sunrise did not disappoint and continues to impress me after her living here for a year and a half. The facility itself is beautiful, comfortable, spacious, clean, stately, yet homey. The staff is welcoming and professional and make every effort to address emotional and physical needs. Daily communication with the staff is well received with timely and positive feedback with all concerns. The transition from assisted care to memory care was handled with sensitivity and wisdom from the staff which was extremely helpful. The meals prepared are well balanced and provide a variety of choices for residents. The Staff works hard at assisting individual needs and creating a positive meal time experience for each person. Many different activities are provided daily with an emphasis on music appreciation, and group participation like bingo and word games. Sunrise has helped ease worry and concern for my sister in many ways which we continue to be very grateful.

Our prayers were answered as we searched for the right place for our elderly parents. Dad, with severe dementia, and mom needing more help with his care and her activities of daily life made living in their home impossible. Sunrise of San Mateo is a smaller and more intimate Community for both my parents. The highly skilled and compassionate staff made the last few months of my dad’s life as comforting as possible while providing my mom and our family the care and support we needed to get through. We are forever grateful for the incredible teams in Reminiscence (memory care) and assisted living. This is a follow up to my post 4 months ago. My mother, who was in assisted living since January, passed away just before Thanksgiving. She had wonderful caregivers and Med Tech staff who were reliable and compassionate during her transition to hospice. We couldn’t be more grateful for the wonderful staff at Sunrise and their coordinated care with the hospice team to make my mom as comfortable as possible.

Although I do not have a family member at Sunrise, I have been genuinely impressed with this community. I’ve been visiting for several weeks with my toddler every Saturday morning for Teacher Steven’s music class, and the level of care at Sunrise is admirable. Some of the residents join the class, and it’s clear how well they are cared for”the staff is always attentive, hands-on, and ensures everyone is comfortable, engaged, and happy. The manager personally welcomed the children with snacks and balloons, and even made sure parents had coffee. The facility itself is spotless, beautiful, and welcoming. I’ve truly enjoyed coming every week with my toddler, and if I ever needed senior living in the future, Sunrise would be at the very top of my list.

My dad moved to Sunrise last year after attempting to live on his own after my Mom passed away. He was forgetful, lonely and needed support. Sunrise has been a great community for him. The staff is friendly and caring. I really appreciate the reminders provided to my dad regarding daily outings and activities. The staff makes an extra effort to come and get my dad so he doesn't miss out. The staff has also been very sensitive to my dad's changing needs. He needs more support as his condition changes and they have been wonderful in recognizing his changing needs and responding to me when I think he needs more support in a particular area. My wife had chosen Sunrise but ultimately did not like living there. The staff were unable to truly integrate her into the community and this can be partially attributed to her relative youth. The unwelcome advances of another resident caused her no small degree of discomfort and she no longer felt safe there. The staff are so patient and extremely nice towards my mom who suffers from Dementia. The care is a learning curve that changes daily and they understand the challenges. There is always room for improvement but my mom seems happy and that's the most important. I love the fact the facility is so close to work and home, makes it convenient for me to get there if any special needs are required. When visiting - the many seniors I see seem very happy which is a good sign of the attention and of their care. Joanne and her team are pretty amazing and blessed with a lot of patience and love.

It has been a year since we moved our mom from out of state to live near us at Sunrise of San Mateo in October 2023. The relief that I feel knowing that her needs are being taken care of is incredible. Mom's care managers are patient, kind and treat her with respect. Joanne Gutierrez, the Assisted Living Coordinator, has been tireless in coming up with different tactics to engage our mom. She is now spending all morning downstairs participating in activities instead of spending her morning in her room. As her care needs evolve the team modifies their approach to her care. They are wonderful about keeping us in the loop and are very willing to problem solve together. Joanne made it clear that she wants her team to get to know the residents in their care and I feel like they do a wonderful job of it. We are so grateful to have found the community at Sunrise of San Mateo.

I had the pleasure of visiting Sunrise San Mateo as my daughter is in a string quartet that performed there recently as part of a community service project under which the quartet was founded. We were met by the sweetest residents who were engaged and active participants! They were indeed a lovely audience! The lobby was welcoming, and the ambience was serene and reflective. The areas we walked through were clean, and organized. The activities team that helped organize the visit was responsive, warm, thorough and helpful. The quartet hopes to visit again once they have a new music set. Thanks for everything!

My Mom has been at been at Sunrise Assisted Living for six months. My Mom is happy living there, she is active in the many daily activities that are offered to residents, and she likes the food! Both the other residents and the care team members are very friendly and welcoming. The care team has been very good at selecting the right service level for my Mom and communicating when any health or other issues arise. The care team members who are assigned to my Mom and help her with daily activities like bathing and medication management are very positive and competent and have shown they really care about my Mom and her well being. The dining room team members are also very competent and accommodating of personal tastes and special requests. I’m very happy we chose Sunrise and would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for assisted living.

The Sunrise Community opened their arms to my Girl Scout Brownie troop in the Fall on 2022. We came by to visit and play game with the residents. Lisa the resident director was amazing at preparing the residents for our arrival. We have very fond memories of that day!

I moved my mom into this facility Dec 2020, & at first was not happy with the management/nursing staff or how communication was not happening clearly or concisely for the caregivers to be able to do their job. After multiple complaints, by myself, & others, a changeover in staff & management happened, & things turned around significantly. What a vast improvement in the new management team & nursing staff. From Minnie, Sunrise Sr. director who is warm & friendly, compassionate & has good heart, has an open door policy to her residents & their families. Her clear communication via email was helpful regarding changes at the facility or issues as in Covid of when we could visit our loved ones, was informative, timely & beneficial especially if you didn't live close by. The nursing staff currently, Stella & Loa, is far & beyond amazing. They're warm, friendly & communicative, as well as cognizant of any changes of residents health issues that they have observed or developed. They coordinate with Dr's, physical therapist, other healthcare practitioners & family members on best health practice for their patients/residents. Meds are always being regulated & oversee'd by the med tech care team, such as amazing Norma, to be sure they are administer timely & correctly. Another amazing management staff member is Joanne the Sr. Manager of the caregivers group whose energetic, upbeat, personality is always looking for a solution to whatever issues I brought up to her. Joanne always communicated clearly to me, & made sure I was informed of any changes regarding my mom & her behavior changes as her dementia continue to increase. Joanne especially made a difference once she got hired as she took over as manager of the caregivers & provided the direction that was needed which enhanced the care being given. Not to forget the creativity of the Activities Director, Lisa & Joie who enjoyed getting residents involved in games, arts, watching movies, current events etc. as they were always accommodating to us when we needed a ride to a Dr's appt via their shuttle/van. Lastly, the welcoming admin. team: Teresa, Faye, Trish, Princess, all would greet you with a smile, give our dog a treat or 2, help with understanding our billing questions, or get you the help you needed to your questions or concerns. The entire staff at San Mateo Sunrise are there to provide love & care for your loved ones, support you & keep you informed allowing you to be able to leave your dearest family members in very capable & the best of hands.

Sunrise of San Mateo is a beautiful assisted living home and offers great care to the residents and their families. Their hard working and caring staff keep our mom safe, assist in her daily routine, and support her to maintain as much independence as she wants. The management staff is always open to discuss changes or concerns with her care and always offer suggestions and advice to improve her physical and mental well-being. Our mom enjoys having a variety of activities everyday, especially the exercise class and frequent live entertainment. We like that Sunrise of San Mateo is a smaller size community and everyone is treated like family. Highly recommend Sunrise San Mateo! From the moment I stepped into the facility it felt like home! The staff is so warm and engaging and the facilities are beautiful. From the entering the lobby and being greeted, to the cozy living area with fireplace, the library with books and tables for puzzles, to the cafe where there is always an activity going on to the white table cloth dining room where the residents gather for breakfast, lunch and dinner. My mom, who requires assisted living level 1-2 care for dementia, is very happy! Their skilled nurses and care team engage all the residents and treat them like family. They are also very communicative with updating the family and are also super flexible with the level of care needed as changes do occur. The residents are always happy and many are active in the multiple activities they offer throughout the day and evening. My mother specifically loves the fact that she can be independent in her own apartment (kitchen/bath) even though she needs a structured agenda and reminders to do things. She loves the services they provide including hairdresser, laundry, house cleaning, and most importantly meal time! I feel blessed to have found such an amazing place to care for her throughout her memory care journey.

My sister and I moved our Mom into Sunrise of San Mateo approximately 2 years ago. We were lucky to secure a one bedroom that had enough space for the things she liked to be surrounded with. Mom’s care team was always excellent - keeping us up to date on her physical and mental health. They always encouraged her to participate in the social aspects that Sunrise offers. When Mom’s mobility declined they encouraged us to move her into a smaller unit - so they could monitor her more closely. This suggestion and attentiveness for our Mom was really appreciated. The whole staff at Sunrise is warm and caring and our experience was very positive!

Sunrise provided excellent service in the memory care floor and was always responsive to my mother's needs. They do make a real effort to keep the residents active to the extent they can be, and have concerts and live music and holiday parties for all residents. It is as if they are staying in a luxury hotel, and the food is good as well. The caregiving staff were fantastic.

Sunrise of San Mateo has been a wonderful experience for my dad and my family. The care managers provide excellent care and are always so kind. The nurses make sure to inform me of even the slightest change in my dad and listen and respect my wishes with regards to his care. During the pandemic a new Executive Director joined the staff and she is so kind and makes sure to follow-up swiftly whenever I call or have a concern. The place is so clean that you could eat off the floor! i would recommend this assisted living facility to anyone looking to place a family member. They really go the extra step to make sure the residents that live there are happy and well cared for. Cudos to the staff of Sunrise of San Mateo!

A five star rating for Sunrise San Mateo is well deserved. Having had my mother in an assisted living home prior, I have the ability to compare. In my opinion there is no comparison. My mother came to Sunrise San Mateo in Hospice. The care she has received from the staff is incredible. They pay attention to detail and actually care about my mother. They coordinate with Hospice and I truly do no worry about my Mother now that she is there. I know that if even the slightest incident takes place, i.e., a small cut on the hand, I receive a phone call immediately. The residents are friendly, welcoming and very happy. It's a smaller facility so it is easier for people to get to know one another. They have activities taking place all of the time. I believe a great Assisted Living Facility is 'great' because the care starts at the top. The Executive Director, Director of Sales, nursing staff, and the care staff all have the right attitude. They are responsive, friendly and get to know the residents AND their families. I highly recommend Sunrise San Mateo and am grateful my Mom is there

I think this place is out-of-control . Cannot keep administrative staff - lost their book-keeper, general manager and in general all management level positions are like a revolving door. Fourth floor Reminiscence is short staffed - you pay for services that you do not get. I had to move my family member out of there because of on-going concerns.
