Dirigo Pines, I am a widow and was living in a very comfortable large home and decided I needed a change so here I am. I made the change, it was a hard decision but I am content and there is much going on. We have a delightful Chef that knows how to present a delicious menu, no more cooking for me!! Dirigo Pines offers a community in the best sense of the word. Our experience here is that people in the inn and in the cottages genuinely care for one another. Importantly, the administration supports and encourages the thriving of the community in many ways. Staff members are sensitive to the fact that older people vary considerably in their abilities and show respect for individuals in that range of variation. I find that the physical beauty of the place is joined with the caring attitudes of the residents and the staff form a positive place to live.

My stepmother has resided at Dirigo Pines for the past four years, beginning in Independent Living and now in the memory care Arbor Unit. Throughout her time there, she has received wonderful, high-quality care that has made her life as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. One of the most important aspects of her care has been the low staff turnover. This consistency has allowed both my stepmother and the staff to genuinely know and trust each other, which has greatly contributed to the quality of care she receives. The compassionate and professional attention she receives brings our family peace of mind, knowing she is being cared for in such a supportive and respectful environment. The social activities provided are appropriate and have brought her much joy. Additionally, medical support is excellent”her primary care provider visits Dirigo Pines weekly, which makes accessing medical care simple and seamless. Based on our experience over the past four years, I would gladly choose and recommend Dirigo Pines again.

I helped my parents move into Dirigo Pines in November 2021. My dad passed away soon after, but my mom continued to live happily at Dirigo Pines until she died in July 2025. From the beginning, I was impressed by the caring professionalism of all the staff members, from the executive director to the servers in the dining room. Every single person at Dirigo Pines interacted with my mom and dad with dignity, compassion and humor. Chef Lew organized a special 90th birthday tea party for mom. Karen, a wonderful nurse in Meadowbrook, called me as soon as she noticed that my mom was beginning to decline. Mikka, a CNA with the heart of an angel, made my mom feel loved and valued until the end.

My children and I have volunteered at various events at Dirigo Pines throughout the last few years, and they are always so gracious and welcoming. We absolutely love, making cards, sharing hellos and smiles, and watching the faces of the residents light up as we walk through the beautiful facility and chat with them about their life experiences. With Christmas coming up soon, my kids have already asked when we can return to make ornaments with our friends at Dirigo Pines, we cannot wait to return and volunteer again!

My father is a long time satisfied and happy resident of Dirigo Pines. This past weekend marked his 100th birthday and the family held a birthday party for him at DP. The Dirigo Pines staff was most accommodating in helping us to plan for, set up and hold our celebration. We could have not been more satisfied with the facility or with the outstanding support that we received, particularly from Lewis, who was there from set up to departure to make certain that all went well at the event. This was a very important event for our family and the Dirigo staff made certain that it went off without a hitch. Many thanks for the party and for all that you do for Great Grampy.

This is a beautiful retirement community, but there is one glaring problem - the food served is not good - it is clearly pre-packed in bulk and microwaved for individual serving, similar to many large organizations which are trying to cut their costs. But this is a high class retirement community. It should be serving far better food and it should be prepared in its kitchen from scratch. The quality of food is very important for retirement communities.

More than a year ago, my brother was was diagnosed with dementia. He had always lived alone but now needed help with everything. Although I live out of state, I became his guardian and set out to help move him into a place where he’d be safe, well cared for, and able to enjoy his remaining years. After an extensive search, I decided that the memory care unit in Dirigo would be a good choice, and in January we moved him in. I must admit that I had my concerns about being 1000 miles away and unable to visit often to see firsthand his care and wellbeing. However we spoke frequently over the phone, and each time I’d him ask how things were really going he always said, Oh they couldn’t be better. I believe he meant it! In October, he suffered a major cardio event from a preexisting issue that made it necessary to begin palliative care. I was privileged to spend his remaining 3 weeks with him in Dirigo which also allowed me to witness firsthand the care and love he had been receiving all along. There are many on the staff who obviously contributed to his excellent care and happiness during his time that I would like to thank. However, there are a few who’s names stand out me: Nathan, Stephanie, Sarah, Jackson, Rachael Miller I particularly want to thank 2 others for going above and beyond the call of duty to make my brother’s remaining time full and enjoyable. Monica Nicknair, Life Enrichment manager for her excellence in drawing him out and ensuring that his days were active and happy. And Jessica Lundquist, who took the time to really get to know him, becoming a friend who listened to his needs and concerns, advocating for him when he needed it - key to his happiness and comfort at Dirigo.

My best friend for the past 50 years is a resident of the Memory Unit at Dirigo Pines. He has advanced Alzheimer's. When he first arrived, he could speak very little that was understandable, yet was very mobile. Over the period since his arrival, he has lost the ability to speak, is bedridden, likely doesn't know who I am, and responds to stimuli only sometimes. I visit him often, and I pay particular attention to how he is being treated. In the beginning, staff encouraged him to exercise and participate in activities. As the disease progressed and he could no longer participate in such activities, they continued to work with him in any way possible. In my experience, the staff at Dirigo Pines take very good care of him, and treat him with dignity. If I have a concern, the staff immediately address it. I've been approached by staff, whom I haven't yet met, and politely asked of my connection, which I have appreciated because it informs me that they are concerned for the well-being of the residents. I've played music for my friend, to which he appears to positively respond. Staff have expressed that they have been using music with some residents with very good results. I appreciate such efforts. I haven't been concerned with the cleanliness or sanitation of the facility, and I am quite conscious of such things. The staff are pleasant and appear to enjoy working with the residents. The Executive Director, Paul Arbour, is very easy to speak with, is accessible, and appears to have genuine concern for the residents. I appreciate all that Dirigo Pines and its staff have done for my friend.

I have had two elderly relatives at Dirigo Pines. The current administration has done a great job of motivating the staff to be caring and attentive. One extremely good change they have made in the last year was to hire an RN to oversee the Meadowbrook neighborhood. This has made a big improvement in the level of care and communication with families. Meadowbrook has private, spacious and cheerful rooms. Nothing institutional about it. The food is fantastic...I wish I had Louis and his staff cooking for me! It is self-pay but they will do the paperwork for long-term care insurance. When I get to that point, I hope I can go there vs. the standard nursing home!

I have lived at Dirigo Pines, in an independent living cottage, for almost 5 years. I love it here. It’s a welcoming community where residents can be as sociable or as private as they choose and there is a wide variety of activities for those who wish to participate. A big plus for me is that I don’t have to worry about home maintenance. And when it snows, my driveway is plowed and my walkway is shoveled before I finish breakfast!

My father moved to Dirigo Pines about 7 years ago. He progressed through independent living, assisted living, and finally memory care. The staff at Dirigo Pines provided him with excellent care through the end of his life. They are incredibly compassionate and foster a true sense of community. Their memory care unit is truly exceptional. Residents are provided with stimulation and entertainment through the many activities that are offered. This is not the case in many other facilities.

My mom was a resident at Dirigo Pines for 10 years. She started out in independent living and later moved to assisted living. I am from out of state and have visited there almost every year. The staff is amazing and addressed mom by name. I just got back home after being there for a month as I came to visit and mom got sick and passed away. The nursing staff were amazing to her. She was on Kenduskeag at the end. Previously she had been on Penobscot. I can not say enough about all the amazing staff from every department.

Over the past six months my father, a resident at Dirigo Pines, began to decline. As we all navigated the reality of Dad's approaching passing, we met with the team at Dirigo Pines, and other agencies involved in Dad's life, to ask for their help in honoring his request to remain at home in his apartment. We were met with an overwhelmingly positive response and the partnerships, teamwork and, above all, the care and compassion that followed was unimaginable. We knew we were asking a lot but the commitment to excellence at Dirigo Pines was evident in every thought, word and act of kindness from staff members and residents and associates alike. Our family cannot say enough about the care and staff at Dirigo Pines. We were living overseas with Dad when he developed health issues beyond the care limits of the local medical facility. We had toured Dirigo Pines in the past and they helped us arrange to move Dad into the assisted living neighborhood. This was 2019. When we arrived, everything we had ordered or shipped, like furniture, clothing, and sheets were all unpacked, labeled, assembled, laundered, hung up..... whatever we needed! After returning to Japan, 2020 happened and, throughout all of the challenges, with a 13 hour time difference and no way to return home for almost 2 years, the staff at Dirigo Pines worked with us patiently and tirelessly to meet my Dad's needs. We have just returned to the US to find Dad very comfortable, content and very much part of a very vibrant community that is is not only facilitated by, but includes, the wonderful staff at Dirigo Pines. My kids were so happy that I was able to receive both Covid vaccine shots in a timely manner. Kudos to the staff at Dirigo Pines for making it happen. It was so well organized and we are now feeling safer--one of the many advantages to living here.

My wife and I just completed our COVID-19 vaccinations last week. The events were arranged through the Dirigo Pines administration and CVS. It was well advertised in advance for the day and then subsequently when various groups would be scheduled during that day. Everything worked perfectly for all our residents. The CVS people were patient and well prepared, and the friendly Dirigo Pines staff was everywhere, being helpful from parking to a cookie afterward. At the last moment I had to change my scheduled time and that was done seamlessly. All the residents that I spoke with were very grateful and relieved to have this important step behind them.
