Our mother, Evelyn Aust, has been a resident at Commonwealth for the last three years. She comments in all of out conversations how Commonwealth is the only place she wants to be. The staff creates a loving environment for all the residents. There is always something going on, whether it is the field trips, the themed parties or musical guests, Evelyn has never been bored. When she was having to recover at her home, Tina made a recruiting trip to tell her she wanted her back and that she was not going to let her leave. I would like to commend Summer King. I enjoy having her serve us and take care of us at meal time. My mom has been at Commonwealth a year now. She has improved in so many ways. She was living alone and due to her age and physical limitations had limited social time with peers her own age. The activities department is absolutely outstanding with the variety of activities and outings. She loves arts and crafts and painting and of course bingo!! She has visited museums, wineries, dinner theater, a boat ride on Claytor Lake and even a baseball game!! The care team works with her on PT and OT and her physical limitations have improved. The care team staff are very attentive and monitor her health regularly. It was difficult for her to get out to her primary care doctor but now she sees the Commonwealth doctor for checkups and other needs. Getting dressed and out to church became difficult but she now attends church at Commonwealth and participates in bible study. With all this said Commonwealth has been very good for her and our family as we know she is in a good place. I highly recommend Commonwealth Radford for your loved ones. They have an outstanding management team and staff ready to help you make the transition! Our family is extremely grateful for all they do!!

My 92 year old Father has called Commonwealth Senior Living home for over a year and in his own words, which he tells us regularly, "I couldn't ask for a better place to call home!" We have been extremely pleased with the caring Staff in every department and the way they are attentive to each residents specific individual needs. From the Administration and Management, the Medical and Nursing, the Dining and Food Service, the Recreation and Activities, the Maintenance and Cleaning and the On Duty Reception Staff, all are most professional and caring. The Resident rooms are comfortable with nice shower/bath and walk-in closet. The Dining/Activity Room is large and not only hosts the 3 meals per day but many recreational activities to include music, excercise, games, and Church Services. The TV room hosts smaller group activities and many video shows, arts & crafts and table games. The Lobby Living Room features a fireplace and comfortable couches and chairs for lounging and visiting. The two Outdoor Terraces have garden areas and patio seating giving residents a safe and secure area to enjoy the fresh air, sunshine and nature. Our family considered many Senior Living Facilities in the New River Valley for Dad's care and new home and after more than a year, we know we made the right choice. We would recommend Commonwealth Senior Living in Radford/Fairlawn to any family making the milestone decision wanting the best care for their Loved One. We feel we made the right decision!

Went to visit at Commonwealth Senior Living Radford staff is always so friendly when coming in. Tina Clark is a ray of sunshine to this facility always going above and beyond and ensuring you feel right at home everytime you are there visiting. When I was there I witnessed her with a family and the compassion she shows is like no other she is a true blessing to the families and residents there.

Enjoyed the meal, the theme, and overall experience. Always fun to see how Nate is going to express himself with the theme of the dinner. I wish I knew more names as everyone was super friendly. Melinda, Tamara, tina ,kamryn, made a point to come over and say high. The chef asked us how we enjoyed the meal. There were others too but I cannot remember their names. Everyone was smiling and made us feel very welcome. Thanks so much!

I've had enough experience with nursing homes to know that this is the best. My sister lived at CSL Radford for the last 4 years of her life. I do not live near Radford and developed my own mobility issues during that time and could not visit often. She was in the memory ward, suffering from Alzheimer's. This was the perfect opportunity for abusive practices to be employed, but CSL was always great with her on every level. On the rare occasions I was able to visit I was always impressed by everybody there and how they cared for the residents. I also received huge amounts of help dealing with issues caused by the long-distance relationship. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

Making the decision to place our Dad in memory care was very difficult. It's a decision that did not come easy. When our family started looking at facilities we were immediately impressed with the facilities at Commonwealth Radford. On our first visit, the positive interactions between staff and residents was evident. The management and staff have been with us throughout this journey...always willing to answer our many questions, quickly responding to texts and calls. Sending texts just to see how we were doing. So far, my Dad is adjusting very well and that is such a comfort to see him flourishing in a safe and loving environment.

I visited my grandparents and was a bit disappointed that there was no water or cup for water in their room, and their room was dirty. My grandmother barely remembers my name, so she definitely can’t remember to ask for something as simple as water. I noticed her voice was hoarse and throat was dry and bothering her while she talked, and that’s when I noticed there was no water or cups or anything.

Things are improving slowly. I think going forward, when new people are hired, and periodically, management needs to look at camera footage to make sure staff is acting according to management standards. This will prevent the residents from going through unnecessary hardships.

I visit friends at the Common Wealth on a weekly basis. I have always found the staff to be polite, friendly and helpful. The friends that I visit are quite happy to be there and speak well of the staff ant their care The facility is always clean and bight. There are several things for the residence to participate in from bingo and music to Bible studies. It is always a delight to visit there.

On Monday morning I came in to the lobby and the odor was really bad. That's the second time I have experienced this. Also, on Tuesday, one of the residents became ill after dinner. It took longer than I think it should have to get her some help. There must be a real shortage of help in the evening.

The facility is always SO clean and put together!! This is so important when placing a loved one outside their own home! The staff I encountered today were attentive to the residents and helpful to me when needed. Without seeming put out’ by having to stop what they were doing to help.

The staff are always friendly and attentive to the residents and visitors. Despite being hectic and busy at the time of my visit the staff were no less helpful and responsive to questions. I have also noted that the activities provided at the facility are of good quality and constant which is a great change of pace from what I have experienced in other facilities. Thank you for all that you do for the residents and families, your efforts and care do not go unnoticed.

The Assisted living portion of the facility is not bad. If I were just rating the assisted living portion of the facility I would probably give it 4.5 or 5 stars. If your relative has any memory issues keep a VERY close eye on this facility. My mom was 93 and here for a little over a year before she died in the facility. She had severe dementia and was very head strong. She could no longer walk and was on pureed food. Hospice incorrectly prescribed time released Xanax and the med techs were crushing them. She slept for over 24 hours and when she regained consciousness, she did not want to eat or drink. She died 11 days later. I had been going in to the facility three times per day for 1 to 2 hours each time because I wanted to make sure she was properly cared for. There were times she would not be hungry when meals were served, but if you offered the food 10 minutes later she was hungry. Most of the staff are very caring attentive people, but they have a few who don't seem to care at all. As of last November, the staff was overworked. When you have that many needy people, it takes a small army to properly care for them physically and emotionally. Many of them are in diapers and have physical impairments. If you have a loved one that you cant take care of at home any longer, PLEASE plan on frequent visits. Drop in at 5 or 6 am and check if they are clean, sleeping soundly, listen to see if you hear anyone else calling for help and what the response time is. When you take a tour, if the staff dismiss some of the residents as "always complaining" or "they can do that for themselves" or "she/he's Ok, they just ask for...all the time". Let them know that you expect your relative to be responded to regardless of the frequency of their requests. Many of these people are like toddlers. Would you leave a toddler laying in the bed crying or asking for help. This is a very demanding job and it requires a real love of people. I understand that it is also a business, but management should not foster a culture of apathy. Every resident should be seen as having been someone's baby. There was a day that a mother held them lovingly in her arms and loved them with every fiber of her body. I have heard that this facility is the lesser of the evils, but please keep your eyes on them. Don't assume that the job is being taken care of. You will still have to be VERY involved.

If you need a second home for your loved one, you will love Tina Clark and the staff at Common Wealth in Radford. My husband is there now and he thinks that is his home. I brought him home once and had to take him back. They met him at the car and he went right on with them. They keep you informed and you can visit them any time. I can not say enough about Commonwealth Senior Living In Radford, VA! My mother lived on the AL side for a number of years, then I decided to move her home with mea big mistake on my behalf, however I did enjoy the time we shared and now Commonwealth has graciously accepted my mother back into their loving, kind-hearted Sweet Memories Unit. This is my mother on an adventure and it does my heart good to see her beautiful smile!! The directors and staff are some of the most kind hearted loving individuals I have had the pleasure of meeting and I can sleep better knowing my mother is be treating with love and respect. If your aging parent or relative needs Assisted Living or Sweet Memories do not hesitate because you will be making one of the biggest decisions in there life and yours and Commonwealth Senior Living goes above and beyond to see that your loved ones needs are meet. Our questions were always answered quickly and thoroughly. The meals always seemed to have a good variety and quality. The entire staff has shown a true level of compassion that is unmatched. Commonwealth has earned our respect.

This is a wonderful place. My dad has been there for 6 months and has adjusted to this change. The staff at Commonwealth Senior Living are so knowledgeable and caring. They put the residents first and you are treated like family. From the time you walk through the door you feel at home. They are great at communicating updates, changes or needs that your loved one may have. I highly recommend this facility if you are looking for a place for your family member.

Twice recently the latest Nov. 1 at around noon I have found my wife Georgia Wallace still in bed. She resists being pull up by her arms. I showed the aids my way of putting her feet over on the floor and having sit on the edge of bed. I doubt she had lunch. Missing clothing is a problem especially a new pair of red and white plaid shoes and a heavy weight purple hoodie. It seems her supply of depends has dimished significantly and I remind the aids that I am supplying them only for my wife. It appears that the aids are often very young. Do you have a high turnover?
