My dad moved into Bennett Place a year ago. Our family put a lot of thought moving him into this facility. He's 91 and it was a really hard decision. We chose this place because it just felt right. The staff is very warm and caring. I can tell that they love my dad. There's a huge room when you walk in the front door and that's where our family celebrated Christmas. We even brought his dog that my daughter keeps to visit. His room looks over the courtyard and he loves that. He has a really nice, big window and he enjoys watching the birds.

I had Thanksgiving lunch at Bennett Place with my Dad. The staff, as always, was very attentive, and the food was delicious. I’m happy I was able to take part in this special time together. Bennett Place has become my second family.

This is a lovely, moderately priced facility, which feels more like a home than an institution. Bennett Place has one-bedroom and studio apartments. It accommodates only 39 residents, who furnish their own units with their favorite items and mementos. It is conveniently located off of I-265 and Charlestown Rd, close to groceries and shopping areas. Good security, as staff must unlock the doors for entrances and exits. The building is laid out in a square with a nice courtyard in the middle. This allows residents to walk safely inside the equivalent of 2 or 3 blocks to make the full circuit. The dining room and den with a fireplace creates an open, "homey" feeling. The staff take a personal interest in the residents, and they have planned daily activities and good outings like going to IUS musical performances and community theatre. A nurse practitioner, physical therapist, and podiatrist make scheduled visits.. As with any organization, sometimes you do have to remind the housekeeping staff of essential chores, but texts to the director usually gets things done. The nursing care is added on to their basic rent and is graduated according to the level of care one needs as time progresses. Thus, as your loved one becomes more dependent, they do not have to move into a separate facility. The food is quite decent--sometimes excellent and sometimes mediocre, but much better than most institutional food. Guests can join their loved ones for a meal at a modest fee (less than the cost of a fast food meal). My sister now resides here and is quite content, even though the move from her home was initially a challenge. She recently was hospitalized for a few days and commented, "Boy, this food really makes you appreciate Bennett Place. I can't wait to get back there." She has found a supportive, loving community and has bonded with other guests. We all are very grateful we found this place for her.

Very nice facility but it was a long wait to get into the facility. I was there on a Sunday (6/23/24) evening around 7p. First rang the RED button then the White doorbell. Then the red button again after it took so long for someone to come. Finally someone came. She apparently didnt know the code to get us in and had to get someone else. Took another 10 mins for the other staff to come and let me and another lady in. The visit went well with the resident. I went to leave and had the same problem leaving as when I went in. No one to let me out! Another person was waiting also up front. We were both going down the hall trying to find someone but to no avail. I even called the number to the facility with my cell in hopes someone would pick up but NO ONE! I went down the hallway again and finally a staff came out of a rm and I asked him to let us out. I also asked if there were just two ppl here working and he said yes....this is so inconvenient for visitors. I don't know what your hiring status is but you should consider hiring someone at least a few hours on the weekends particularly until visiting hours are over to sit at the desk and let visitors in and out! Particularly if you only have 2 staff working, attending to patent needs. They should be focus only on patient care and not have the responsibility of letting ppl in and out of the facility!

Updated review. Well, here’s the good and the bad. Good: Beautiful garden and courtyard, nice dining room and nice apartments with nice bathrooms. The people are nice overall. The bad: The lack of attentiveness. They aren’t paying attention when executing basic tasks; examples I’ve seen with my own eyes: spilling urine when emptying catheter bag, hanging catheter bag on wheelchair handle (it needs to be below bladder) not wiping the urethra when changing briefs, not washing face, not changing socks, no trash bags in trash cans, dirty clothes mixed with clean clothes, giving miralax daily when told to stop, 1+ hour call light wait times, or they don’t answer it at all. Not all aides have pagers or are lost. Some aides out if the building. You have to go daily and watch and monitor the care of your loved one constantly. It’s a struggle at $7k per month.

It is always very tough when your mom graduates to the last chapters of life and needs professional care and social interaction. Bennett Place has made this so much easier for mom and me. The management and staff are top notch, all smiles and so welcoming (And so are the Residents). They always have games, activities going on and take everyone out to Restaurants, Plays, Ice Cream, etc.. As you can tell, I am very thankful.... Keep up the great work Bennett Place!

December 2022
Bennett is a solid smaller facility with excellent medical care for residents. Here’s what I like: Staffing is done based on acuity, rather than numbers. That makes a HUGE difference with the amount of care and attention a loved one receives. Rooms are small but clean and generally well kept. Two residents have dogs, and one has a cat; the staff help care for them, which is great. All staff”including temps”are vaccinated for Covid. Staff are also well trained. Several residents are in wheelchairs, like my mother. Staff know how to handle transfers (my mom is a one person transfer at level 5) because they’re trained correctly. That also makes a huge difference. Staff are nice, and the director of nursing is top notch. I can’t say enough good things about the director of nursing; her deep experience as head ICU nurse for two units shows. She is a big reason we chose Bennett. Are there things that need improvement? Yes. The food would be one. It shouldn’t be so hard to hire someone who can make food taste and look good. Residents do complain about the food, but those complaints are nothing like where my mother was before. Bennett also seems understaffed, and it can be hard to get someone to let you into the building. Residents also need a better sense of community. Most stay in their rooms or engage at mealtime. No place, however, is perfect. Bennett has its issues, and so do most other facilities. If the level of care is key for you, you’ll be hard pressed to beat Bennett. I looked for a facility that would be able to care for my mother until the end of her life. I’ve found that now with Bennett. I recommend this place.
November 2022
We moved our love-one to Bennett last year. I have to say, the facility was well maintained, food was good, house-keeping was on par, we thought what a great place. Unfortunately, it went to a very good well-maintained place to something less than desired. We moved our Mother out a few months ago. The nursing care (I believe is very good and they truly care for the residents). However, my Mother did not need this level of care. What she needed was ALL the other things, such as good food, house-keeping, laundry, etc., they lacked. This is a small facility and a large percentage of the residents (in my opinion) need to be in full-skill level nursing care. With the exception of nursing staff, management in the front-office is non-exist. This facility is old and with the amount of security/move in fee they charge, the rooms have not been updated. The maintenance staff is very good, but I believe their hands are tied by management. Bottomline, look at other places. I would not recommend this place. Lastly, Bennett please do not comment on this post and ask me to reach out to you about further comments, questions, etc. We have already done that.....
November 2022
My mother was a resident there . She has since moved to another facility. The hands on nursing staff and maintenance person were great, but the cook and housekeeping left alot to be desired. The acuity level of the residents that were being admitted was almost too much many days for the staff to handle. Several residents should have been in memory care units or skilled nursing homes where they could be monitored more closely. These patients were at times urinating on the hallway carpet etc. Too trying to get into the facility to see your loved ones especially on the weekends was difficult since a staff member has to let you in and they were short staffed on the weekends. Also, at least one resident should have been in a mental health institution and not an assisted living facility. He would holler out at all hours of the night and could be very aggressive with the staff. We felt he was there because of course Bennett Place was receiving payment for his care. We were always afraid he would hurt one of the residents and the staff was afraid of him too! The food choices left much to be desired . My mother lost weight during her stay secondary to the items they were serving these elderly people. Definitely not quality food menu. Some residents were allowed to have animals and one dog was very aggressive toward visitors and staff. One dog smelled so bad since the owner could not bath the dog and this is not the responsibility of the staff who are already overworked. We definitely WOULD NOT RECOMMEND placing your loved one in this facility.
May 2020
My mother was there a couple of years until she passed away, and my aunt is there now. The staff is very caring and the residents are given much individual attention. The food is great, and the activities are well planned for all residents. During the pandemic extra care has been taken to protect the residents, with innovative ideas for visits. I looked at 5 facilities before choosing Bennett.
