A Very Difficult Experience — Former Employee Today I received a “Happy Anniversary” message from Harmony on the Peninsula, reminding me that today would have marked one year of employment. Instead, I found myself reflecting on my experience there and the many reasons I ultimately chose to leave on June 12. In my experience, Harmony was one of the most stressful and disorganized organizations I have ever worked for. The focus seemed to be overwhelmingly on the bottom line and staying within budget, often at the expense of employees and, more concerningly, the residents we were there to serve. The residents are the ones I believe suffered the most. Staffing was frequently inadequate, and I personally witnessed situations where residents did not receive medications, bathing, or other necessary care in a timely manner. I also witnessed residents being “double briefed” rather than being changed as regularly as they should have been. These are vulnerable people who depend on their caregivers for their basic needs, and seeing these situations was extremely difficult. As Culinary Director, I did everything I could to provide the residents with food that was nutritious, appealing, and appropriate for their individual needs. When food orders arrived short or when a resident had a special dietary requirement that we weren't adequately supplied for, I frequently purchased ingredients with my own money so that residents would still have what they needed. I am still owed $540 from an expense report for food I personally purchased approximately three months ago. Unfortunately, the issues did not end there. I am still owed wages for hours I worked as well as vacation time. I have contacted the Executive Director, the Business Office Manager, and Corporate Payroll multiple times regarding these outstanding amounts, yet my messages have gone unanswered. I have heard from others who have left Harmony that receiving their full final compensation has also been an issue. I sincerely hope that is not the case with me, but the fact that I am still trying to get answers months after leaving is extremely disappointing. I also have several friends who are currently looking for assisted living options for their parents. Based on my personal experience working at Harmony, I have specifically advised them not to consider Harmony as an option. When someone is trusting a facility with the care of a parent or loved one, I believe they deserve to know what that environment is really like from the perspective of someone who has worked there. I do want to recognize that there were individuals there who genuinely cared about the residents and did an excellent job. The Maintenance Director and Activities Director in particular stood out to me. Both worked extremely hard, cared about the residents, and consistently went above and beyond to make a positive difference in their lives. They deserve recognition for the effort and compassion they brought to their jobs. I cared deeply about the residents and genuinely tried to make a difference during my time there. That is what makes this experience particularly difficult. Employees cannot consistently provide the level of care residents deserve when they are working in an environment that is understaffed, disorganized, and seemingly driven primarily by budget considerations. I hope Harmony will take these concerns seriously—not for the sake of its reputation, but for the sake of the residents and the employees who are responsible for caring for them.

When we urgently found ourselves in need of a home for our dad, we found Harmony on the Peninsula and we are so grateful we did. The facility is beautiful, and the rooms are spacious and quiet. In our particular situation, Harmony partnered with a hospice agency to provide care for our dad. The staff worked seamlessly to support our dad and also encourage us. Ms. Paige, in particular, was so gentle and funny and kind and she advocated on behalf of our dad. Thank you all for supporting us during this time!

Being new to Harmony on the Peninsula with my mother as a resident, thus far (1 week in), the introductory has gone smoothly. A lot of adjustments for my momhoping for the patience and individual understanding for her, will continue from her caretakers. I do find employees to be very helpful and cordial at different times of the day with any help we need.

My father in law just moved to this facility and the staff, the director and the sales associate are very professional and welcoming. The facility is clean and tidy and the food is very nice and varied. Very friendly and professional atmosphere/

Finally, we found an Assisted Living facility for my Dad that actually "assists the living". The nursing staff and the dining staff are very patient with the residents. And speaking about dining, the restaurant style dining offers delicious meals. The Harmony administrative team is always available to assist. Ask for Tyler for a tour.

Five stars to Ashley on the Memory Care Unit. My family is so happy to have her as an employee at Harmony to assist in taking care of my Mother. Her strong work ethics and passion for what she does has impressed my Dad and I. Wish the world of assisted living facilities were full of "Ashley's". She certainly puts us at ease when we leave the doors. Thank you Ashley! The Joyner Family

I’ve had nothing but a great experience for my dad. The caregivers are kind and concerned, the facility is very clean, the food is great as I eat there with dad all the time. Residents are very friendly, lots of activities to do if your family member is so inclined. Church is available, doctor services, to include podiatrist and physical therapy on siteI’m there almost every day and I’ve seen nurses, aides, dining staff and PT staff very sensitive to resident needsmy dad and family are very satisfied.

Providing care for the aging community is challenging for families and the places that provide it. Harmony has done a wonderful job of providing support and care for our Dad. We love the staff because they love him. It shows. The Life Enrichment Director does an amazing job of helping residents flourish. We are pleased.

A welcoming positive community. The staff is very family oriented and upbeat. Especially Gloria, Sandra and the Chef are taking extra special care. The 1st few weeks are a tough adjustment for a newcomer and they just welcomed us all like family. Nice peace of mind.

Harmony on the Peninsula is a beautiful building tucked away in Yorktown. Close to Poquoson, Newport News and Hampton. Fresh prepared meals and wonderful homemade banana bread that can be found in Bistro along with other special treats.

I had the opportunity to tour Harmony on the Peninsula today. My first impression was great, the community looks so inviting. The facility layout was convenient and the rooms were very large and accommodating. The food looked and tasted great! The best part was the friendly staff who were always smiling and supportive. I would absolutely trust this staff and facility with myself or one of my loved ones!

My father is there and his health has declined dramatically and the staff won't even let me speak with my father, he has been brainwashed and pushed around like a dog after serving his country for 35 yrs. I emailed the director 18 months ago and he assured me they would keep me updated. I haven't heard a word in

I would like to take a moment to recognize the wonderful staff at Harmony. We placed my aunt there after an extensive stay at another rehab facility. All of the management team and caregivers that work there are so kind and loving.. I can think of countless times That the staff went above and beyond making sure she was clean ,fed ,nutritious meals and they keep her busy with activities. The caregivers and management team keep in close contact with me and my family regarding her care and progress. The facility is clean and cozy. I would recommend this facility to anyone considering placement for their loved one

Very accommodating and friendly staff. Made my transition to this facility more tolerable. First couple days here and getting use to the surroundings. Nice amenities.

A year ago this month my sister came to Harmony, to become her new home. Never could I have imagined that she would love it so. I want to thank ALL of the very experienced and caring employees for taking such good care of her. Harmony on the Peninsula is a very impressive facility. I would definitely recommend it for anyone looking for excellent care for their loved ones.

One year ago my brother and I did an extensive search of assisted living options in the area for our mother. Harmony on the Peninsula has been an excellent choice for her and our family - the supportive and attentive medical staff, along with a management team committed to ongoing communications during this pandemic season, made the transition a smooth one. Mom was quickly made to feel comfortable and welcomed in her new home. She has enthusiastically joined in many of the activities offered during the week (and occasionally assists in leading some of them!). Harmony on the Peninsula is a great fit for Mom as they provide us assurance that her care is a priority for the entire staff!

My mother has been on the memory care side since 8 October 2020. To our surprise she really likes it here. She has done a great turnaround compared to when she was in rehab for 7 weeks at a different facility. The staff is very friendly, a second family to my mother now. I do find that they are short staffed in the later evenings, especially on the weekends. I love the fact that I’m able to visit my mother everyday if need be which seems like I’m there everyday or every other day. My mom loves the interaction with the other residents and the hands on activities. The food looks amazing and mom says it’s delicious! She’s feed very well here...no major complaints thus far!!
August 2020
My mom has been there for two years now. The place is beautiful and the assisted living apartments are nice because they are more than just one room. However, there is a high turnover of staff, I believe due to poor managements. Initially the needs of our mom were being met, but not anymore. There are usually only 2 people working the entire second floor. My mom has had to wait from 30 mins to an hour to go to the bathroom (she is in a wheelchair and on oxygen). We have cameras in her room to monitor her care, therefore we have accuracy on the timeline. Sometimes she hits her button for help to get up in the morning at 8:30 and no one is available to help her until 10 am and that is when we have had to call the front office to send someone to help her. We are now looking to move her because her needs are not being met and the cost is going up. It really is a shame, the facility is very comfortable.

The 1st impressions when you walk thru the door are very impressive. I am afraid I would never want to be there in the memory care unit. Some of the things I have witnessed have been sad. We put our love one in the week before Christmas even though it was a very hard decision her care taker needed a rest period. She walked in there and could carry on conversations even though she showed confusion. Within 2 weeks she was in a wheelchair and not really verbalizing. She had fallen a couple of times and had bruises. Now we were faced with could we handle her at home. We decided to leave her there feeling this was the best decision for her. I have been up to visit many times with her just sitting with her head down and her clothes were dirty. Soon we realized she was laying in her own waste many nights when her mattress was discovered. The staff are friendly but I don't see a lot of interaction except to tell them to sit down or go to the dining room or the TV room. We have observed that after dinner everyone is put in the TV room to babysit while the staff sits in the dining room. No stimulation after dinner which is around 4. We were there 1 night when a gentleman was trying to eat and every time he brought his spoon to his mouth it hit his clothes. There is no kitchen staff to serve so the staff is expected to serve and clean up and believe me they would not survive on their server skills. While they are serving no one is available to help the patients feed themselves or anything else. Another night someone fell out of their chair cracking his face open after rescue came to get them the only cleaning I saw was a wipe up of blood with a paper towel. This has played on my mind since I work in the medical field and expect some protocol of cleaning. The lounge chairs and furniture is stained and should be covered in material that can be easily cleaned. We have brought our loved one home for 2 weekends in a row with help from a wonderful private nurse, and our patient is trying to live again she is walking with assistance and talking. Our notice has been given to get her out of there it takes 30 days and this place is not cheap and for what is being paid a month I feel this is adult neglect. It could be a great facility if the staff took some pride in their job and showed some compassion for people suffering from memory loss. Before I ever placed a loved one in a faculty again I would make sure the place knew my concerns and let them know I am watching them.
