Nurses and CNAs are truly outstanding at their respective jobs. Armstrong, Sarita, Inatu, Freddie, Deysi, Joseph, Hawanatu, Mariatu, Kent, Mekdes, Sahar, and so many more, deserve high praise for their care and attentiveness and compassion. Tajia and Tatiana have been most helpful in helping to navigate the complex bureaucratic world of one-size-fits all Medicare. While the therapists are highly professional, I believe they could be more creative and flexible to motivate my husband to participate with them. He wants to initiate, does initiate with others, but they haven't found the button for him to initiate with them. Trust and empathy are not lost on the infirm. Because of time, God, me, family, and the hourly care he'sreceiving, he is recovering slowly, as is usually the case with stroke patients. Thank you to everyone. And to God be the Glory!

My husband and I have been treated very well as perspective residents of the Virginian. We first visited when we went for the Grand Reopening, which was amazing. Such a state of the art place. Then we met Jenna when we returned for more information and a tour. We were very impressed. Saw the whole place, all the floors and facilities followed by happy hour and dinner. Our experience was fabulous. We also went back with one of our daughters when we just dropped in and had a tour. Last week we toured again with Jenna and another daughter. We were impressed with Jenna who answered all our questions and showed us around again. We particularly like the idea of a rental as opposed to a buy in. When we were there we talked to the residents who seemed very happy. We are not ready to move but are pleased with our experience at the Virginian. Jan

My experience with The Virginian as a prospective resident has been very positive. My first tour of the facility was during the remodeling. It has been wonderful to see how beautiful the finished product turned out. The open house was an amazing event. Kevin Rios from the marketing department has been my point of contact. He's very helpful and responds quickly to my questions. He's introduced me to residents who seemed to be very happy living at The Virginian.

I first became aware of The Virginian when a friend of mine brought it to my attention when she saw the article in The Washington Post regarding The Virginian, back in November, 2023. I first met with Jenna Ballard in November, 2023 who gave me a tour of The Virginian and pointed out the amenities that were available to the current tenants. I was very impressed with the cleanliness of The Virginian and all of the tenants that we encountered during our tour appeared to be very content and happy with the facility. Jenna took time to speak with many of the residents that addressed her during our tour time. I was very impressed with the renovation that was in process at the time of my first visit in 2023, and completed at the time of my second visit in 2024. It showed me that The Virginian was willing to spend some money to make things better for the tenants. Jenna is a beautiful sales associate that takes pride in being a promoter of The Virginian in that she takes everything potential residents have to say very seriously and answered all of my questions in a way that I totally understood. What impressed me the most about Jenna was that she not only took The Virginian into consideration with her answers, but also took into consideration that the person she was talking to was a potential upcoming resident. I had looked at a place exactly like The Virginian and when the sales associate my son and I met with started introducing me to the current residents of the facility, she introduced me as the next resident in Apartment # 201 – even before I had even seen Apartment # 201. Jenna did not pressure me in any way to make a decision the first day that I was there, and has not since – which I think is fantastic. If I decide to stay living in Virginia, and decide to move in to a place like The Virginian, it will not be a place "like" The Virginian – it will be The Virginian.

I am happy to share my experience and the tremendous support that I received, along with my siblings, and our Mother, from Jenna Ballard, who is the Sales and Marketing Director at The Virginian. I had heard of The Virginian when my mom had mentioned an interest in moving there several years ago, having gone by then for a site visit, and remarking what a nice facility with beautiful grounds that maybe she could do some gardening if she moved there. Fast forward to April 2024 when Mom turned 94 and my siblings and I realized that it was no longer possible for Mom to live safely, alone in her two level house. She either needed to get some in-home help, or move to a safer community. I live in Phoenix, AZ and one of my neighbors in my community is Jenna's mom—crazy small world! I had heard about their $60 Million dollar renovation and was inspired to reach out immediately. So I was introduced to Jenna over a Zoom call on a weekend to become familiar with her, learning about options for Senior Care, and The Virginian as a possible option for our Mom. The fact that someone would take time on a Sunday to meet with me was a great starting point, and I learned that Jenna came to The Virginian with many years of experience already in Senior Care—something I know nothing about. She took me and my wife through the process of dealing with an aging parent needing more support and care that Mom now needed, explaining the various options for Independent Living and Assisted Living at The Virginian. After that Zoom meeting, it led me to then connecting with my siblings—all back in Northern Virginia, near Mom—and got the process started for an in-home evaluation of Mom, followed by a site visit where Jenna hosted Mom and my 3 siblings. I was not able to get back to Virginia to attend the tour and lunch—but heard that it was fabulous and my older brother commented that it was equal to many resorts he had been to. No surprise, Jenna made a video of an available Independent Living apartment room that might be ideal for Mom, so that I could see what everyone else saw, and that made me feel as I was part of the decision process along with my siblings. She has responded to dozens of texts, several phone calls and emails from me and my siblings, and been very patient and informative in helping us—and Mom—get to this point where we have just signed Mom up to move in to The Virginian in July! This process to move Mom out of a home she's lived in since 1968 was not an easy one at all, for any of us, especially Mom. But the sensitive and professional manner in which Jenna approached Mom, me and then worked with my family, just spoke volumes about her own character and experience in this delicate manner. As an amazing "ambassador" for The Virginian, Jenna Ballard's support and care for all of us was a major deciding factor in my family choosing The Virginian as a safe community for Mom to live out the next phase of her life, thriving in a beautiful and vibrant setting with other seniors around. My siblings and I are grateful to Jenna and The Virginian for giving us some peace of mind that's been needed for way too long now. Thank you Jenna, I look forward to meeting you live and in person the next time I come out to visit Mom!

My experience with The Virginian has been exceptional. The staff is very informative, caring, and accommodating. My parents, who are new residents at The Virginian, seem to be pleased with their decision and transition. Given what we have experienced so far, I would confidently give The Virginian a very high overall rating.

My dad's experience at The Virginian was wonderful. People that made a difference were Taija in admissions and Isatu, Armstrong, and especially Kent. There were a few areas that could be improved which include more timely response by late night staff and the kitchen staff who need to improve how they fill orders as requested. I would highly recommend other families to use The Virginian. Despite some of these improvements that are needed people truly care about your loved ones.

This community has invested a great deal in a beautiful remodel, to continue its long, stable history of excellence. I've worked alongside their staff, in supporting the move-ins of multiple residents over the past few years, and their team always displays a high level of hospitality and thoughtful care. Their team is more unusual in this industry in that they have stayed together and solidified over the past several years while many others change positions and locations every 6 months or year. If you are considering different communities, make sure to visit with Jenna and Michael, for a tour and a detailed picture of what it will be like.

At least half of all the staff members at The Virginian know exactly who I am, my father is a well-respected/loved and generally well-treated resident up on the 3rd Assisted Living floor, and in my assessment (and I am a realist), I've made positive bonds with many of Daddy's regular caregivers - the majority of whom are kind, understanding, and accommodating. So to post this review, I must be exceedingly brave, exceedingly dumb, or a combination of the two. Sigh. Here goes nothing. One would think that it would be a relief to have a skilled nursing unit under the same roof where your loved one is receiving memory, assisted living, or an independent level of care. Translated as, consider this scenario: your loved one already lives at the Virginian (on one of the upper levels, where it's beautifully renovated and pristine-looking) has had a fall? Broken a bone? Had a windfall medical emergency, such as infection, which required an extended hospital stay? Skilled nursing would logically be the best post-hospitalization "bridge" to spend some time (ideally) getting more intensive, individualized attention and TLC while building up their strength to successfully head back up to their baseline level of care. In my Daddy's case, that's Assisted Living. Oy. Vey. IMO, the other Skilled Nursing review posters who are appalled, aghast, and otherwise PO'ed are well within their rights to feel that way. Daddy is currently in skilled nursing (his several-eth-time-around) after a week-long hospitalization due to a very serious urine/blood infection, and resulting muscular atrophy from spending a week in bed. Dear reader, Daddy's discharge from the Skilled Living basement back up to his upstairs assisted living unit can't come soon enough. My Daddy is one of the most kind, agreeable, grateful, and kind individuals you'll ever want to meet - AND he's been at the Virginian since 2019, and many employees know and love him, AND it's taken having a 24/7 caregiver (hired from an outside agency) with him in the room, AND a team of geriatric case managers (hired from an outside agency), AND me to keep things halfway straight, and things are still messed up six ways to Sunday. The double doors that lead to the lone area of The Virginian which has NOT been renovated, and goes by such charming, Virginia-themed names as Cardinal, Willow, and Dogwood seem to be a deliberate secret from those who otherwise visit or tour the property. So much so that when Daddy was admitted to Cardinal from the hospital this time around, there was an "event" going on that day, and his admission to the skilled nursing unit was deliberately scheduled after said "event" was over. This was NOT for his comfort, or even due to space constraints, I am convinced it is part of a cautious white-washing veneer to make sure outsiders don't see patients at their most vulnerable. I feel like The Virginian does not want to mar its aesthetic, clean appearance (just look at the stunning front lobby) with the most fragile, worthy-of-care residents of all - those in skilled nursing. And I can't help but feel that based on the lack of attention to any detail (to include providing acceptable cleanliness, providing not-cramped spaces to residents, providing a fine balance of attentive care and privacy/dignity, including helping out with food choices, and being careful to not lose belongings, such as personal clothing which goes into the community laundry) and IMO, a lack of true individualized care - and how overworked and overtired and disenfranchised the staff appear on skilled nursing, that the residents, staff, or anyone else on "B1" is treated as and seen as an afterthought and a bottom-feeder. It isn't like the rest of the building is without fault - it's not - but I feel like it's at least workable, and people are trying to improve what's not right. I implore you, Deena and staff - DO BETTER. Not just for the more-able-bodied, pretty older folks. But for them ALL. .

My wife and I recently took a guided tour through the Virginian that absolutely took our breath away! The recent renovations have flawlessly integrated very modern updates with an incredible "at home" level of comfort. The common use areas such as the library, sports bar and activity centers gave us a sense of community inclusion without the need to travel out into Fairfax County. It certainly appeared that there were such diverse opportunities that would include the interest and hobbies of virtually every resident at the Virginian. The living accommodations were extremely well thought out, planned, and constructed. The varying floor plans maximized living space and optimized the functionality unique to senior living requirements. It certainly appeared that every consideration for a seamless transition from independent to assisted living has been considered. We were very impressed by the staff and the endorsements of the residents we met during our tour. The Virginian certainly is everything we could want in a Senior Living facility and community.

The Virginian is the best community! We looked at many places for my grandmother. We relocated her and found this place to have everything we could possibly need! We met residents and staff which was nice. They just finished a massive renovation. It looks like a resort when you walk in. They have 5 new restaurants including a bar, wine cellar and a bistro. We liked that there were so many offerings that many places didn't have. We ultimately chose The Virginian because it was a rental that has all care one could need for life and not have to move again.

My mom moved into The Virginian last year and it's now totally remodeled and gorgeous. The staff is great - I was there over the weekend and when I arrived I was greeted by two people at the front desk who were very informed about the community. Security is very good. There's a new bistro in the lobby area with a great menu. My mom raves about the food. I hear they have a new executive chef who comes from the Four Seasons and Ritz Carlton. Very happy with our decision to have her move here.

My father is in memory care and I am dissatisfied. There used to be more activities for them. Since some of the staff have left they seem to just house them. Some of the aids are good, but many are not. I know it is hard to work on that unit, and my Dad can be difficult to work with because of his dementia, but maybe the aids need extra training on communicating with dementia residents. Also I would like to be able to call the unit and have someone answer the phone.

The most important advice i can give when placing a loved one in memory care is that the staff is more important than the facility. You want to meet with the unit supervisor and RN and assess their character and competency. You want to observe the staff at mealtimes and during the morning and nighttime routines as these are the most challenging and important times. Are they attentive? Do they work as a team? Are they kind and friendly or tired and cranky? Are they professional or just going through the motions? You want to observe activities and evaluate the activities coordinator and the overall program. And finally, you have to have a plan to actively participate in your loved one's care if you want the best quality of life for them. No facility, regardless of cost or resources or reputation, can replicate the care and tenderness of a loving family member or friend. Through observation and active participation, you MUST cultivate a respectful relationship with the staff to reach the best outcomes for your loved one. This includes respectfully working with the staff from an informed position to ensure accountability and higher quality care. If you treat the staff poorly, do not expect the best outcomes for your loved one. My mother was in the memory care unit at the Virginian and received excellent care. Overall, the staff was very caring and attentive to the needs of the residents. It is a tough and taxing profession, and I applaud the CNAs that pour themselves into it. I am especially grateful for Nurse Yenis. She is a saint and treated my mother as her own. The sales director, Jenna Ballard, was highly professional, knowledgeable and responsive. It wasn't perfect, but through patience, observation, active engagement, and remaining objective, my mother received excellent overall care and was treated with dignity and kindness for which I shall be eternally grateful.

The Virginian is a lovely community. A bit overpriced for what I consider Vintage 1980s aesthetics, but nevertheless a nice place for seniors to call home, with sweet people working there. Our dad finally decided on The Virginian after courting the idea of moving into a community for a couple of years. The rehab department is excellent; 5-star rated as we know it. Will spare the details, but will say that we worked with Lauren, the social worker, who guided us through a pretty stressful time. The community has great nurses, too. We also worked with Alton in marketing for many weeks, who was so gracious to us, especially to my dad, and went the extra mile. Thanks! Sincerely, V.

My mother moved into the Virginian in Fairfax, VA last week. From the initial visit to see the facility through the signing of the paper work, Jenna Ballard has been a godsend. Jenna has personally looked after every step and made my mothers transition so smooth! She arranged for my mother to get her 1st Covid Vaccine, prior to moving in, meeting her at the door and staying with her throughout. Then the day we signed the paperwork, she and her coworkers had champagne to celebrate. She has checked on my mother regularly. I am not so sure this is her job, as she is in sales, but she continues to be so supportive, keeping me in the loop, and never fails to forward me information, answer my texts or calls, every day of the week and at all hours. She is so sweet kind and hard working! The Virginian is fortunate to have her working there, and the residents too! I have to give a special shoutout to all the employees, from the women at the front desk, to the nurses, aids, doctors, dining staff, engineers, & the rest of the sales team. They have all welcomed my mother so graciously, and made her living there enjoyable, despite the COVID restrictions still in place. Another special shout out to Cameron Cousin, the exec chef at The Virginian. what a nice guy. He personally delivered her food on the 1st day to welcome her, asking if she had any other requests. He came back with extra dessert and drinks. I am so happy she is enjoying the meals, and the food quality is on point. My mom is happy and safe living there, and I know she is in good hands when needed. I look forward to the next year and watching the transition of The Virginian as they renovate and update! Its going to be beautiful!

We found the Virginian after months of looking for an independent living facility for my mother. Jenna Ballard was my contact and so informative and helpful. She sent me virtual tours of the facility, and all the renovation plans that look fantastic. She was able to get me all the information my family and I needed to make an informed decision and my mother made the move to her new home. She was welcomed by all and has been treated with such kindness since her arrival less than 2 weeks ago. She loves every employee she has met so far, is just over the top with how wonderful everyone is. I highly recommend the Virginian and appreciate all Jenna and the staff has done to welcome my mother to her new home.

After a somewhat traumatic health setback, our loved one was placed in The Virginian for rehabilitation. Our family knew that we had to decide on a long-term solution as returning home wasnt a viable option. Whats most appealing about The Virginian is that they offer different levels of care, including in-person rehabilitation and skilled nursing, in one building, via a rental model. Four star review as The Virginians fee schedule is unfortunately not straight-forward and there are random price increases. For example, literally everything is an add-on, additional fee, which made budgeting somewhat difficult. This differs from other communities we looked into. We will be paying just as much for add-on fees as we will monthly rent. Hopefully this will change in the future, as a strong recommendation. We can honestly say that our loved one, and our family, went from absolutely not considering The Virginian to falling in love with the staff, food, and overall accommodations. A few staff members who wed like to thank (we hope they see this). Nurse Diane in the nursing area was incredible as well as Dr. Gaddipati. Also Jennifer, one of the Directors, is a very knowledgeable nurse and kind. Our point of contact from the very beginning, Alton Ward, is very professional, knowledgeable and charismatic, helping in a great way to set The Virginian apart from others in the area we had also carefully considered. Thank you!

This is the best rehab team ever! I wish I could give them more than 5 stars! They gave us hope in helping my father who has been suffering with the effects of a stroke (paralyzed). We came to them one year and a half after his stroke as an outpatient. The treatment here was unmatched and far exceeded the services at INOVA rehabilitation centers. They defied the odds at helping a one year and a half stroke patient who was bed-ridden and a hopeless case yet they did not give up and helped him stand up!

My family are so very grateful for all the loving care my mother received at The Virginian. The staff always seemed so caring towards the other residents as well. They were always willing to listen to us and were more than happy to assist my mother with anything she needed. We observed firsthand the professionalism and concern exhibited by staff for those residents requiring special care. We will be forever grateful for the care, love and attention given to my mother in her final days. On behalf of my entire family and all those who loved her I will forever be grateful for the staff who truly went above and beyond the call of duty.

Our family carefully weighed our options and The Virginian was unanimously the top pick. The Virginians Alton Ward, our first impression at the community, is a gem and a credit to the organization. Deciding on a senior living community in the midst of a global pandemic is extremely stressful, and takes a leap of faith, too, as one might imagine. Alton listened to our unique needs, which drastically shifted, and he shared how The Virginian could meet those needs. We also learned about the big remodeling project thats about to start, as we understand it, the continuum of care, and The Virginians management company. Prior to our mom moving in, the team set-up a nice outside meeting area for us as visitation restrictions were in place. We met the Executive Director, Andy; Administrator, Priscilla, and Head of Sales, Anna - all wonderful people who came out to welcome my mom. Andy and Priscilla routinely keep families informed of things happening inside, which is critically important, especially during these times. Although we havent been able to visit our mom indoors, we are confident that shes in the best hands, and for that we are thankful. Wed like to sincerely thank everyone at The Virginian for doing your unique part to help ensure our mom prospers in her golden years.

My mother, who had been a resident at The Virginian Retirement Community in Fairfax for almost ten years, recently passed. I wish to express my heartfelt appreciation and gratitude for the outstanding staff and exemplary care which was provided to my mother. My husband and I consider The Virginian part of our extended family. Again, thank all of you for all of the provided tender loving care. We recommend the Virginian Experience highly when encountering retirement and extended care for a loving family member.

wonderful place to work and very kind staff. Nurses are very attentive and make sure the residents are well taken care of. I would bring my parents here when the time is right. Lots of fun activities for the residents to keep them entertained

My parents are in Independent Living there, and absolutely love it! The staff is so wonderful! My Dad quickly made friends with whom he plays poker weekly. My Mom is very social and wants a lot of interaction, and doesnt miss an activity. I was worried in the beginning because my mom didnt want to leave her home of 40 years, but now without the stress of taking care of the house, shes more relaxed, happy, and active in the community there. My Dad still drives so they can drive less than a mile to the CVS and grocery store. I know that there is also a shuttle that goes there but they havent needed it. They are also still close to their old friends, neighbors, church in Vienna; so they continue to maintain their longtime relationships. This was a difficult decision for my parents and us to make, for my parents to leave their home and move to an apartment in The Virginian retirement community...but it has really been a blessing! By the way, Im confused by these other posts that dont appear to be relevant to The Virginian Retirement Community.
