Having to make a decision to place a loved one in a nursing home has been an extremely hard one but the folks at Hickory Hill Retirement Community have been so kind working with us patiently and answering everyone of our questions. The retirement community is in a beautiful setting and is more like a home than a facility. Our loved one is very happy there and has had the best of care. The staff has been very attentive to her needs and keeps us informed which is extremely important to us. They have daily activities and the food is fresh and homemade which is a bonus. Hickory Hill Retirement Community has given us peace of mind for sure and we feel like we have become part of their family. If you have to make this difficult decision for a loved one the first and only place to call is Hickory Hill Retirement Community in Burkeville VA, you will be glad you did.

Our dad has been at Hickory Hill since late October 2024. We toured numerous facilities. We were attracted to the fact that HH is family owned and operated. Everyone during the admission process was very helpful and accommodating. From day one all staff engaged our father to welcome him and help him transition the facility. In fact, Dad thanked us for bring him to Hickory Hill. Within a month, he called HH home. We were thrilled. Shortly after admission, Dad fell and broke his hip. We were so grateful that he was at HH since previously he lived alone at home. The outcome of living home and breaking his hip could have been deadly. We were so happy to know that HH was able to handle the hospital admission and his return to HH. HH staff has worked to keep Dad healthy, in the best spirits possible (at 98 years old with dementia), trying to get him to socialize, go to PT (will prompting from staff) and encourage him to go to daily meals. He, in fact, is in a larger pant size. We are SO grateful to the all the staff at Hickory Hill Retirement Community for all they do for our dad- nurses, aids, maintenance staff, dining room staff, PT staff, administration....everyone that sees him speaks and assists as needed. They tell us they enjoy talking with him. There are not enough words to express our gratitude. Pam and Deb

This place will take anybody in for money its full of bed bugs the memory care unit smells like urine there a family-owned business but treat their employees with no respect. Housekeeping issues they do not sanitize the building its full of germs state needs to come in this company has a-lot of violations. Hiring employees with no type of experience with begin a PCA or CNA skills. I would advise no one to have a family member to live here. These reviews are lies!!!

My father enjoyed his time at Hickory Hill and they worked tirelessly to make his life enjoyable and peaceful. It is a blessing to have a facility and caring staff like this in Southside Virginia. My aunt recently moved to the memory care center at Hickory Hill. I am so pleased with the care she is getting and the activities they provide. She even received a manicure with her nails painted. The care givers are wonderful to all of the residents and have lots of patience in handling difficult situations.

Hickory Hill has been a tremendous blessing to my parents and to our family. It is a small, family run facility and that has made all the difference. I have been able to get to know the family and the staff on a first name basis, all concerns and questions I've had have been quickly addressed, the nurses have been attentive and intentional in my parents' care, and even though the facility is a little older, it is organized, well decorated, and (most importantly to me) it is clean. The meals are fresh and made from scratch. Our family wouldn't hesitate to eat the food and that says a lot, because we are picky eaters. One of the granddaughters of the founder even makes homemade ice cream for the residents on a regular basis. We all know that some of the residents wouldn't know the difference, so this is truly a labor of love and shows her commitment to their care Although I still wish I could care for my parents and many times rehearse in my brain how I could bring them home again, I know it isn't possible. Honestly, I don't know what I would have done with Hickory Hill. There isn't any other retirement community in the area that I would trust around here. I am very grateful for their commitment.

My mom has lived at Hickory Hill for several years and seems content there. She recently moved to the Memory Care Unit, which is very light and airy with large windows framing a lovely wooded landscape. She enjoys the food and meals and snacks are served on time in a nice setting. Her room is large and spacious in Memory Care. The facilities are very clean and well-kept--there is never an odor or concern about sanitation. The staff is quite nice and accommodating--theirs is a most difficult job. Mom celebrated her 95th birthday last weekend and, since she is not mobile to go in a car, the staff allowed us to welcome a small group of family and friends to visit her (COVID risk is low right now)--they even decorated the room to make our guests more comfortable! Their laundry does a good job and returns clothing items quickly. The owner has a nice lab who "comes to work" and spends his time lounging in the sunshine most days. Mom likes him and feels that it makes HH "homey"--I hope he will be able to visit her occasionally in her enclosed garden area this summer!

The first time I went for a tour I fell in love with this place! I couldn't care for my mother any longer and needed a memory care facility. Everyone is so warm and friendly! My mother has been there now for 3 months. She has put on some weight because they have gotten her to eat, which was an issue at home. She smiles again and is really genuinely happy! Again, I love this place!!

Hickory Hill provides excellent care, wonderful activities, kind companionship and great food to senior citizens with a wide range of needs. The staff is very responsive to special requests, and they go above and beyond "the call of duty" to keep the residents comfortable, happy and well-cared-for. They cared for my mother during the last part of her life, and I will be forever grateful for the kindness and compassion the staff devoted to my mother and to my family. I heartily recommend Hickory Hill as a wonderful place for any loved one in need of care.

I toured about 4 places to put my dad with dementia and after 2 months living with us, we toured hickory hills and it was closer to us and in a beautiful surrounding. With being in an area with farm land around it's nice if he wants to go outside he can, it has a nice big covered porch. The staff there are extremely nice and caring, expressly the nurses. My dad said he likes it there. I was blessed to find a nice place. He been there almost 7 months and threw this pandemic they kept me posted of what was going on. Thanks Hickory Hill.....

After searching one year for an assisted living facility that i was comfortable with i selected Hickory Hills Retirement Community to care for my alzheimers afflicted wife. Their staff have made a concerted effort in caring for her and seeing to her every need. I am extremely pleased with their management and staff. They have provided a loving and caring home for her.

It’s not often that an organization’s performance is so exemplary that you are compelled to share it with the community. This is the case with Hickory Hill in Burkeville. They have a memory unit there for people with dementia and Alzheimer’s. Never have we witnessed a place that has more devoted, compassionate and caring staff. Their personnel are well trained and have routines built that makes sure every resident gets their care needs met in every category you can measure. We moved our mother there and this is first hand knowledge. This is a family business run by Dee Mullens, herself a senior citizen. While we have no first hand knowledge of their assisted care facility, we see no reason why it’s not run as well if not better than the memory unit. Our family wishes to thank them from the bottom of our hearts in their caring for our mother

We toured Hickory Hill as a possible placement for my Dad, who has Alzheimer's. HH was the best of the places we toured. The home-feel of the facility, the cleanliness, how well the grounds and building were kept. The rooms themselves were also well thought out. What I appreciated most was there were plenty of quiet places. (So many places only have one common room and it is bedlam of noise from multiple sources which can be maddening for dementia patients! )

I don’t know how this got posted as I would never rate this place a 2. It had been suggested that google popped up and asked me to rate it and I was trying to swipe it off and maybe I hit a 2. I have only visited it once as a place for my husband with Alzheimer’s. My daughter and I was given a great tour and discussion and answer session. I will most likely place him there.
