Getting in contact with any of the staff is next to impossible after they've sweet talked you into moving your loved one into the facility.

Spring Hills Mt. Vernon is nestled in a nice community immediately off of Rt. 1 in the southern part of Alexandria. The building has a mini-mansion outside appearance but lacks aesthetics inside. It does have a baby grand piano in the lobby which is used by residents with musical skills to the delight of the other residents. Guest musicians come in for special events. But the dining hall is crowded which is probably good for business. The facility - like lots of assisted living sites - is short on caregiving staff. Some of the staff are from the same African countries or Caribbean island nations and sometimes - just sometimes - get confrontational with each other and can be overheard referring to their tribal rank or relationships and complain about their caregiving "colleagues" talking down to them. Residents receive their medicine sitting around in a "medicine station" area where they are given medications in front of each other. For the most part, staff are pleasant but are required to multi-task due to a lack of sufficient staff. So, residents wait for a while - sometimes an hour - to get assistance getting back to their room, for example, after their meal. The facility has a van used to transport residents on field trips, to Walmart, and to other short excursions but it has been inoperative at times. The Activity Director does an excellent job of celebrating birthdays and holidays with the residents and scheduling outside entertainment including musicians to facilitate sing-alongs. In short, the facility provides basic services for assisted living, and social interaction is encouraged with other residents. Sometimes caregiivers could be more gentle but have little time to do more than give meds, get residents down to the dining room for meals, clean rooms, wash residents and do laundry. They have their hands full. You pay a monthly fee based on the type of residence you rent and for a level of care based on an individual's needs. The problem is caregivers have their hands full so you pay for basic care - which can often been very basic - and anything else is an add-on you pay for. .On a scale of 1-10, I would give them a 6, particularly since I've seen other facilities and Spring HIlls does offer and encourage interaction among its residents.

I was referred to SH from A Place for Mom. I've had several interactions with this community. Most specifically, Ms. Latasha White, Community Relations Specialist. My experience has been nothing but positive. Although we are not quite ready for this move due to medical reasons, SH would be at the top for AL needs. Ms. White is a PERFECT AMBASSADOR for Spring Hills. One conversation and you will know what I mean. Thank you, Ms. White for being proactive, videos, invites, and continuing to work for us.

My friend was a resident at Spring Hills for only a few months while she was recovering from a long term illness. I was in charge of helping her coordinate her appointments and other medical issues. The minute I walked into Spring Hills for a tour I felt that this was a happy place. There is such a friendly atmosphere you immediately have a feeling of family. Everyone we came in contact with took the time to pause and say hello. The staff is dedicated to meeting the individual needs of the residents. The food is wonderful and served restaurant style. There are a variety of activities offered each day in which the residents can participate. Since I was in charge of my friend's doctors' appointments I was thrilled that she was given a complete, up to date list of medications to give the doctor for every appointment we went to. All of the doctors loved this because she did not have to rely on her memory. The list was accurate and it could easily be entered into the patient's records. This saved so much time! There are so many positive things about Spring HIlls I can't possible cover them all. For me it was not having to worry about her care or safety. I knew she enjoyed living there and was being well taken care of.
