My Mother in Law moved into Walking Horse for the last seven months of her life. I can unequivocally say that she was loved and fussed over by the staff, exactly what you want for a loved one who needs any level of assistance. Hospice was well-networked in and had a team approach to her care with the Walking Horse staff. Chanel, the Director, sets an environment that is welcoming and wants the Residents to feel like they are home in a cozy and caring environment. Thank God we found this little gem of an Assisted Living Facility!

As a community partner, Walking Horse is one of my favorite places to visit. Every time I go, I am greeted and welcomed with a smile by EVERY member of their staff. The community is clean, and welcoming. The residents are happy and most often are always engaged in some type of activity. Clarksville is blessed to have Walking Horse to serve our senior populations!

As an adult child of a resident of the Memory Care unit at Walking Horse Meadows in Clarksville, Tennessee, I will admit that this life transition my mother is in is difficult to watch. When a loved one lives with dementia, you feel helpless. The staff at Walking Horse Meadows reassures me with their love and care for the residents. I have no doubt Mom is in good hands.

First, I have very high expectations, but honestly who doesn't where your loved ones are concerned? The staff and leadership are all very kind, compassionate people and they truly care about the residents. Structure, detail, follow through are areas they desperately need to improve on. My mother had Alzheimer's and was very high functioning, yet she really needed the daily assistance/structure and that's why we made the difficult choice to move her there. When we got there, we discovered after some time that the daily activity schedule was essentially fake and not being executed. Thank goodness they hired a new activity director; she has been wonderful. Without this change we would have had to move my mother to another facility despite how difficult that would have been for her. My mother had a fair amount of other health challenges that really couldn't effectively be handled by their nurse practitioner and LPN's. We started taking my mother out to her own physicians and honestly, we had a heck of a time coordinating her care and medications with the Walking Horse team. This is an area that they need a great deal of improvement with. As my mother's Alzheimer's symptoms started to get a bit worse, she no longer was able to maintain her own grooming. This is where Walking Horse really fell apart despite many meetings with them to address these concerns. My mother would resist the help, this would result in her room not being cleaned as well as it should, her not being bathed regularly, not getting dressed, not participating in activities, etc. This really could have been addressed by training and coaching their staff on how to work with difficult residents and not giving them the option to opt out of the basics of daily living. Toward the end my mother's other health issues really took a toll and she required more care. My wife and I both witnessed several occasions where the response to the call button was longer than it should be. We had to have a meeting to tell them to please keep her portable oxygen machine charged and assist with getting her switched between the portable and regular oxygen machines. Really basic things that we should not have had to tell them to do. Without much additional effort this place would really be top notch.

My mother began her walking horse experience as a day visitor and would come a few days a week so that my father could complete some personal errands. After she had a fall last year and went to a local rehab my family noticed that not only had her physical mobility changed but dementia had increased as well. I work at Walking Horse Meadows and even as an employee of the community and familiar with health care communities after working over 20 years in it, I had a hard time accepting that it was time to place her in a community. After placing her at the community I never once regretted it at all. All the team members treated my mother as if it was their mother and to this day I cannot express how thankful I am for that. I recently lost my mother and even though its hard to come to work and see her room, my team mates are there for me and continue to be there for me. My mother had fun while she was here. She made friends with the fellow residents and team members and her last days here were comfortable and full of love from everyone that encountered her. My mother spent her last days full of friends and love and that in my opinion is the best thing that I was able to give my mother. People think that persons that work in health care are numb to things but we are not....the team here at walking horse grieves every lost resident and enjoys each new friendship at the community.

This has really been an unusual experience for me. First of all, I have never slept in a room by myself and that was hard to get used to. Eventually, I thought it was kind of nice. Second, I found that I didnt have to worry about falling anymore. When I was at home I mixed up my medicine and would fall 3-4 times a week. I found that I had a really good friend, who worked at Montgomery Central K-12 and she cordially invited me to join her table during meals in the dining room. Strangely enough, there was a man at the table who really caught my eye. He had big blue eyes... VERY blue... Sky blue. Which was a change for me because both of my previous husbands had brown eyes. Thats the beginning of our love story. After 6 months during covid restrictions, we decided that we would get married. My son, Cayce is a minister and he performed the deed outside of the building with our family and watching us from a window. When I look at everything from where I am now and when I first arrived and was lonely and in a room by myself, I feel like God put us both here. Even though there are no walking horses I would still like to give our home here a five star rating!

My mother stayed at Walking Horse Meadows for three years after we were no longer able to provide care for her in her home. I believe the management and staff are Heroes everyday for all the loving care and they provide for their residents. Theyre also very excellent in providing care during urgent situations. They were superheroes this past summer during a storm that knocked out power in a large area of Clarksville. I talked with the condominium owners who are located right beside Walking Horse and they said during the storm there was an electrical fire ball running down the electric line for several minutes and many startling noises and electrical . There were also huge power fluctuations in the area and then the Transformer blew. The staff at Walking Horse did an amazing job in protecting the residents and doing everything possible to ensure their safety during this difficult situation that affected many people in Clarksville. I believe the management and staff at Walking Horse are angels protecting many senior citizens. Im very thankful for all the Care they provided for my mother and provide for all residents and Im very blessed to call the management and staff at Walking Horse my friends. Sincerely, Barry Schmittou
