Had I reviewed this place three months earlier I would have given it 5 stars but once it changed ownership the quality nose-dived and we chose not to return mom to this facility two falls under their watch. I moved my mother into Brookdale earlier this year after another memory care facility she had been living in closed due to neglect. At first, Brookdale was wonderful. The staff was caring, the facility was well run, and I finally felt like I had found a safe place for her. Then the facility was sold, rebranded as The Colonnade, and everything changed almost overnight. The new ownership terminated the Executive Director, the Director of Nursing, and several other key staff members. Families were never notified of these major leadership changes. While my mother was hospitalized and then in rehab after two falls, not once did anyone from The Colonnade contact me to check on her or discuss her return. When it came time for her discharge, the rehab facility repeatedly tried to contact The Colonnade to coordinate her care. No one returned their calls or emails. The rehab facility was so concerned by the lack of communication that they called me to warn me. I also reached out requesting someone contact me to discuss my mother's increased care needs. I never received a response. At that point, I gave notice and moved her elsewhere. When I went to clean out my mother's room”the room I had continued paying full price for over two months just to reserve it for her return”I was shocked. The room was filthy. There were dead sand crabs collected in plastic cups beside her bed and on her dresser, dirty adult diapers on the floor, bugs, dirt, and debris throughout the room. It was obvious housekeeping and maintenance had been neglected. Staff members even told me my mother was the fourth resident to move out that week. My experience left me believing that the new ownership prioritized cutting costs over maintaining the quality of care that families expect and residents deserve. It was heartbreaking to watch what had been a wonderful facility decline so quickly after the ownership change. If you are considering The Colonnade for a loved one, I strongly encourage you to ask detailed questions about staffing, leadership turnover, housekeeping, and communication with families before making your decision.

My father just moved into Clarebridge, the Memory Care portion of Brookdale West Ashley. Melissa (Sales and Marketing), Michelle (Sales Assistant) and Wilson (Executive Director) were all wonderful and very inviting. The Caregivers all seemed compassionate and understanding of my father's need and transition. It took 5 years, but because of Melissa's diligence and follow up, we were able to get him there. Looking forward to a continued good experience!!!!

Always viewed any facility like Brookdale as scary place and not a place I would want to be or send a family member. However, Brookdale has forever changed my mind. This is the second memory care facility I've had my mother in. The other was in Tega Cay, SC. This facility is cheaper and has provided a better level of care and service that prior one did. The staff are friendly, responsive and I've seen a dramatic improvement in my mother's health. Keep up the good work

Care above and beyond expectations. Brookdale West Ashley in Charleston is an assisted living community my Mom has called home since May of this year (2023). The people here have quickly become a part of our family. The staff/caregivers take the time to get to know the residents personally. The residents of Brookdale are welcoming and supportive of each other and especially of new residents. Above and beyond the daily needs provided (meals, meds, assistance), there is an active social and activity schedule that has something for everyone. There are regularly scheduled trips to stores, restaurants, parks, and also activities (bingo, board games, puzzles, movies, music, and painting just to name a few). My Mom has always loved flowers and gardening. Chelsey, the activity coordinator, provided Mom a personal trip to shop for/buy some plants and supplies. She then supported Mom as she potted flowers and plants on Brookdale’s porch. This was pure joy for Mom. Mom enjoys watching the plants grow and keeping them watered. The Brookdale Facebook post of a video of Mom (captioned Gardening with Carolyn) shows just how much Mom enjoyed getting to plant flowers again. Mom loves her new home.

I feel sad and sorry that you, another family is in search of a facility and care team for your family member to call home and family. Our country lacks so much support and respect for our elder population and their families. This is the most difficult journey for myself and my family. While I believe Brookdale is not the worst, I believe it could be so much better. I have seen it better. Yes, I may have very high standards. And no I do not have limitless funds. And maybe there was not any planning by my mother to make this any easier on her or me. Yet, could there be better? Do we have to settle? I don't believe Brookdale was honest with me when I was at my most vulnerable, looking for a home for my mother. I feel somewhat betrayed and cheated. But, that is now in the past. I do understand the staffing issues/shortages/retention issues, I believe they may be the same everywhere. More staff, better pay, more incentives,....in the ideal world that could change everything. But, reality is what it is and that does not make it any easier for me, the family. The one that knows who my mother once was, knows how she deserves so much more. I will always strive and hope I can do better, do more, til there is no longer a reason to try or to hope. I hope all at Brookdale caring for the residents can say the same, maybe even just most days. Good luck in your journey. As my mother said at my last visit, "we can only do the best we can".

My elderly uncle moved here last February under difficult circumstances. He had been living on his own all his life, and was not happy about leaving Virginia and all that he knew. It took him about a month to get over his anger, and then a remarkable change occurred. He considers Brookdale to be his home, is very comfortable there, and doesn't like to leave for very long. This is my first experience with an assisted living facility, and I have been more than pleasantly pleased. Brookdale is a clean, attractive, peaceful environment, easy to navigate for elderly people, everyone treats each other like a family, the staff have always been friendly and supportive - they love my uncle and take very good care of him, and the activities director is outstanding - a wonderful person in every way. Brookdale has a very homey atmosphere and my uncle definitely feels right at home.

My father has stayed there for a month. Beautiful facility. Wonderful food. Nice people. Unfortunately there is some real inefficiency, and confusion, in fulfilling medication requirements. On the bad side, there is incompetence of the staff responsible for fulfilling doctor's orders, especially on weekends.
