Reading some reviews before deciding whether to take my mother was already hard, but after checking around for a place I decided Otterbein. The staff with my mom is very supportive and helpful, ( she likes them all) I would like to name them but I'm quite sure if this is shown they will know. Anywhere that your loved one is placed, don't just feel that you didn't have a choice. Some could've been better, maybe.. but speak to someone and offer sometimes a solution. There are a couple of things that can be changed for better, but slow and steady will win the race. Just be present, and not feel "it's their job because that's what you're paying them for" help out sometimes. It may help your family members feel safe about their new situation.

My mother is a patient at Otterbein on Liberation Way. I came to visit unannounced and am very pleased with this facility. The staff was nice. My mom is well taken care of. I give Otterbein a thumbs up .

My mom is there and she's pleased and I am pleased with the care. I'm so grateful for Otterbein @ New Albany. I can definitely sleep at night knowing she is ok.

I had a family member who required almost four weeks of rehab after a fall and surgery. I found Otterbein through a referral. The facility was much cleaner than many I have experienced in the past and while there were staff shortages, it's understandable since many people are not interested in working these days. I found the staff to be attentive and helpful across the spectrum of leadership, therapy, aides, nutrition, etc. Their caring nature has convinced me that if rehab services such as these are required in the future, I will not hesitate to use them again.

Spouse admitted after surgery first brain cancer. The care provided by the aides and nursing staff was adequate. PT did work with him but nowhere near the 1 hour a day they claim. Discharge was a nightmare. Nursing not prepared, no discharge summary provided, no medication list or schedule. Was told he would be sent home with sufficient medications for a week - nope just two days of most meds and no prescriptions. Do not let them discharge your family member on a weekend!

My husband was housed in the rehab cottage for 2 weeks. To be 100% honest, the first 4 days (which were over Memorial Day Weekend) were an absolute nightmare. The aides were rude, disrespectful, and took so long to answer the call button system, ( over 45 minutes); at which time I went in search of anyone to help. If I was lucky, they helped us. I understand aides have a tough job, and often a large patient count. However, my husband was one of only 4 patients in the entire cottage and there were two aides and one nurse in house to care for them. After 4 nights of no sleep, I wrote a long letter to Mr. Vincent Thomas, the Executive Director aka Guide, The Director of Nursing, and anyone else I could find an e-mail for. My letter was answered promptly, and Mr. Thomas paid a visit to the room to personally apologize. Positive changes were put in place almost immediately. Special thanks go out to aides, Hattie, Belinda, and Terri as well as nurses Joseph and Raphael. Lorna who is a woman who can multi task anything, always with a smile, also deserves a note of thanks. The Physical Therapist, Andy, is fantastic and has a wonderful personality to go with his skill set. Should you have a loved one as a patient in this facility, I highly recommend they not be left alone until they can or will advocate for themselves. I also recommend, should you have concerns email the appropriate Directors. As my daddy used to say, :"You don't know what you don't know, and if you don't know it, you can't correct it." To Otterbein of New Albany's credit, once they were made aware of the issues concerning patient care, changes were made promptly. Given only an occasional "bump or two" the care my husband received was adequate for his stay between the hospital and his return home.

My mother was transferred to this facility from the hospital. Before her hospital stay she had been at another rehab center for a little over a week. From the minute she was bought to the center everyone treated her incredibly well. I personally have engaged with most of the staff and they are all dedicated and kind. Mom's illness during this pandemic means she has been in 2 different hospitals and 2 different rehab centers during her long medical crisis. All of them including this facility have had staffing challenges. However, this facility has not allowed those challenges to impact the quality of care as much as possible. Further, the staff are so empathetic to my mom who can be sweet at times and vinegar at others. No matter her mood, they have treated her very lovingly and been attentive to her needs.

January, 2020, Building Four. My wife was here for rehab after a fall and surgery. Her stay was about six days. Staff was wonderful attentive and medically good. The food was excellent. Management appeared aloof and busy covering themselves on their laptops. Getting her discharged was too long and an unnecessary event. Physical structure is nice but needs maintenance, large spot on carpet in living room, most of the lazy boy chairs were broken. Carpet in her room dirty and full of salt when workers visited, they brought in salt from their shoes. Not sure I'm fond of this cottage concept, workers have to shuttle between five buildings particularly in the winter, this can be a challenge. Perhaps booties or slippers could be provided for workers and guests. We realize that it is difficult to run an organization like this, but it's the small details that are important.
