This is an excellent retirement Community. While it is not cheap to move there, it is really beautiful and it's set up and they continue to upgrade the facility

My father has been living at Berkeley Assisted Living for 1 year. I hope I am successful at giving an objective review. When I moved him up from Florida, I visited 6 facilities and chose Berkeley for its proximity to my home, the layout and amenities (including enhanced food service options like a public restaurant) that were promised by the sales team. Some of those promises have not materialized. The nursing care is outstanding. The nursing staff is compassionate and competent. They communicate with me and are always pleasant and professional. Additionally, the therapy team is amazing. The facility is very clean and the facility is committed to keeping infectious diseases like COVID and the flu contained. The facility has an impressive fitness center with fitness classes Monday through Friday. Dad really enjoys this. There are more Assisted Living activites since Dad moved in and we appreciate the efforts in this area. There are no regular weekend activities and at times when I visit Dad on the weekends, there are no residents out and about. In addition to the lack of activities on the weekends, food service in the dining area has been suspended for all three meals on the weekends. Because of limited reasons to come out of his apartment during the weekends, Dad has begun calling the weekends "prison time". The lack of activities on the weekend and limited food service on the weekends combine to make the weekends very isolating. Eating with other residents provides great social interaction and that has been eliminated on the weekends. This is very distressing to me. In addition to food being served in the apartments on the weekends, breakfast is served in the apartments every day. There are no eggs to order for breakfast at anytime during the week. When meals are served in the apartments, there is little interaction with the food service staff to ensure that Dad is satisfied with what he is being served in his apartment. The food in general is very institutional (like "nursing home" or school cafeteria food service), served on trays and the menus are heavy on sandwiches and chips at times. They do have an anytime menu but it is pretty limited and has a lot of sandwiches. When we chose Berkeley, we were told that they were going to begin breakfasts being made to order in the dining room and that the dining experience was moving to a pre-COVID experience. This has not materialized. I feel the food service quality at Berkeley currently is not in line with price point quoted for per day services when you compare to other facilities. When Dad moved in, there was a restaurant in the building that was open to the public. That restaurant (The Coach House) provided a dining option. It has been closed since May of 2022. We feel fortunate to be actively involved in Dad's care and we can augment the food service issues by taking him out and providing him meals we have prepared at home. If you are touring this facility, I would ask to do it during lunch and ask to speak with a resident about the food service. I wish I had. We continue to hope food service will improve and combine with the positives I've cited to make Berkeley the ultimate destination for Assisted Living. Bonnie McDaniel
