Five stars are not enough for Winchester Gardens. On a 10-point scale, where 10 = Extraordinary, I would definitely give it a 10. I spent 55 years at Bell Labs Research and AT&T Labs writing and executing surveys of 100s of thousands of customers, integrating the surveys with objective data and creating predictive models such as Early Adopter, Churn, Growth and many others. As I thought about writing this review, 3 major factors came to mind. These are Behavior, Mental, and Interaction, which comprise a new BMI index, that has been validated by numerous medical and psychological studies as major predictors of a happy, healthy and often longer life. One can look back to "Bowling Alone" by Robert D. Putnam for the increasing trend of declining membership in organizations and socializing, which has been amplified through technology and reflected in dining alone and loneliness. Winchester Gardens provides a remedy for this behavioral, mental and interactional decline. It is a CCRC (Continuous Care Retirement Community), but this label misses the boat in so many ways. The acronym gives the impression of thinking more about insurance against decline than in living a happy, healthy life Day to Day. Chinese philosophers wrote that focusing more on the present enhances mindfulness, peace and taking action. But Retirement can have a connotation of Retiring to Bed, from social activities and from growth with declining interaction often Remote. For Winchester the R stands for Renewal and Rejuvenation. Looking at the new BMI index whose 3 factors are highly integrated, Winchester stimulates and enhances Behavior, Mental Well Being and Interaction with physical, intellectual, entertaining, mindful and social actitivies every hour. As I walk through the halls or the beautiful 37 acres designed by Olmsted, I see large and small groups deeply engaged in activities or just enjoying the company. Dining Alone is a relic of the past, not only for meals but for coffee breaks and the daily Social Hours. In fact, Ezekiel Emanuel says in his new book "Eat Your Ice Cream" that the social gain of having a drink with others once or twice a week more than compensates for the negative effect of alcohol. And the mental stimulation from BMI can delay or reduce the impact of Dementia. Winchester excels on each of the 3 factors of the new BMI model. The residents and staff are its greatest asset and it's motto or branding should be based on the Barbara Streisand song, "People who need people at the luckiest people in the world." My 94-year-old mom has been in independent living at Winchester Gardens (her own 2-bedroom apartment) for over two years. This is an amazing continuing care community. The residents are incredibly warm, kind and accomplished in their fields, so my mom was immediately welcomed and is now surrounded by a group of friends with whom she speaks on a daily basis. In addition to the residents, the staff is extremely high-caliber, caring and attentive. My mom stays physically, mentally and emotionally strong by participating in two exercise classes specially designed for seniors, attending fascinating lectures on a wide variety of topics (some led by residents who are distinguished in their fields!), concerts with talented live musicians, classic films, greeting card-making and flower-arranging. She found friends with common interests when she joined the gardening club and a group that meets to observe Jewish traditions on a regular basis. She was recently admitted to the sub-acute rehab within Winchester Gardens following a hospital stay, and her experience there has been excellent. It makes a world of difference to recover surrounded by her friends and with access to the activities she enjoys. Importantly, she is receiving physical, occupational and speech therapy from kind, highly qualified therapists as well as quality care from nurses, mental health professionals, dieticians and health care aides as she grows stronger each day and looks forward to moving back to her apartment in independent living. I cannot imagine a better continuing care community than Winchester Gardens. I am grateful that my mom chose to live there when she could no longer live in her house on her own.

My family member just completed 7 weeks of post-surgery rehab at Winchester Gardens. The PT, OT and nursing staff were fantastic 7 days a week. Peggy (social work) provided weekly updates about progress. The nursing managers and therapy manager were responsive to all concerns, and took all questions seriously. The rooms are lovely abd the unit is calm and attractive. We are very very satisfied!

Follow up to original review, shown below; My father recently passed after 15+ years living at Winchester gardens through increasing care levels, appropriate for his needs. From Sue Lippy and David Weiner on down, the care and consideration he recieved made his time well spent there. We, his family, appreciated all that was done for him, and we know he felt the same. My father and his wife moved to Winchester 10+ years ago, starting in independent. He now lives in assisted living, he has been involved in various activities during his time there, and has met a great group of other residents, as well as much of the staff. He especially appreciates the nursing staff on his floor, Marge and the others. He enjoys David Weiners company, as he checks in on him. Every morning he gets a program of the days activities to pick and choose from. Many days he starts with exercise class, or could read in the library. By the end of the day he's ready for a good dinner and off to bed.

I have been visiting relatives who lived at Winchester Gardens for 25 years. I’ve observed first-hand the various aspects of life there. In my view, under the leadership of the current Executive Director, the facility has been very well-managed and the staff very caring. In my dealings with her, I have found the Director to be always professional, straightforward, kind, and responsive. How she handled COVID was impressive. My mother lived at Winchester from 2000 until she died at the age of 93 in 2015. Her two sisters then moved into Independent Living in 2016. One died in 2018, but the other continued to live in her own apartment until 2024, when she moved to Assisted Living at the age of 100. That aunt died in July 2025. During my many visits (at least weekly) over the years, only in the rare instance were the staff anything but professional and caring, whether it be administrators, program heads, nurses, therapists, health aides, maintenance and facilities workers, concierges, or van drivers. To the contrary, the staff conveyed a real sense of willingness, and even eagerness, to help. When my mother and aunts lived in Independent Living, I was impressed with how management and staff advocated for the independence and agency of the residents. I learned a lot from them about the capacity of the elderly to live full, independent lives. My most recent and most intense experience was with the Assisted Living side of the facility. My aunt received care there for a year and a half before she died. Up close, I saw how challenging the staff’s job is – emotionally and physically. They do such important work under what can be difficult circumstances. Yet they were across the board responsive to my many questions, concerns, requests, etc., and I felt as if we were on the same team – working together to make my aunt’s life easier and more comfortable.

However, I am delighted to say that Winchester Gardens stands head and shoulders above all facilities combined. The staff, from the top administrators, to the hands on nursing staff, the doctors, and therapists: David, Peggy, Kayla, Sabine, Michelle, Theresa, Mary and many more have been professionally and personally over the top! I usually do not post google reviews but I am compelled to give this review. My 97 old mother fractured her leg close to three months ago and went to Winchester Gardens (Sheffield) in Maplewood for rehab. Luckily, because of the great care received, she was able to finally make it home yesterday. The admission process was handled with much caring and professionalism as was the discharge process. The administration, nursing staff, PT and OT staff, aids, Medical Doctors, housekeepers, activity staff and the dining room staff all deserve a shout out for their expertise, professionalism and compassion. They truly made us feel like family. A plus is all the wonderful activities provided to the residents and rehab patients. The facility has a beautiful parklike setting which mom really enjoyed. I strongly recommend Winchester Gardens to anyone needing rehab. Kudos to all of the Administrators and staff listed below who made mom’s recovery happen. My apologies for those I forgot to list but they deserve kudos as well. Selecting a rehab facility to go to after my hospital stay was easy. I live at Winchester Gardens and it seemed the most practical thing to do. I would be in familiar surroundings and it would be easy to keep up with the daily routine such as taking care of mail and keeping in contact with friends. I am no stranger to the rehab system as I was the health care proxy for my aunt who had many rehab stays, sometimes positive and sometimes negative. I was so fortunate to have been admitted to the Winchester Gardens health care facility and to be taken care of by such a professional and talented staff. All of my needs were responded to swiftly and with great care. I was greeted and interviewed by the director of nursing; my personal needs were always responded to quickly and efficiently by the warm and caring staff of aides; my medications were dispensed on time and correctly with an explanation of what they were when I asked; the nurses checked in on a regular basis; physical therapists were readily available and ever evaluating me; the social worker never tired of answering my questions about my rehab plan and release plan; and the health care administrator was reassuring throughout my stay. I can't say enough wonderful things about this place. My mom bought her villa and had such a wonderful time there. The people at WG are all so helpful and responsive and caring. They have everything you would ever want - exercise, PT, haircare, entertainment, town hall meetings, excursions - the list goes on and on. My mom has loved her time at this community, and made wonderful friends and really enjoyed her villa and the beautiful grounds where she would walk her dog every day. When our mom passed away recently, the staff at WG could not have been more wonderful - they truly care about all of their residents, and their families. My name is Richard and I have had the pleasure of living at Winchester Gardens for 2 years. I originally moved into Independent living with my wife. Unfortunately, she devolved dementia and had to move to the memory care section. I am very pleased with the care she receives there and I am able to visit her with a short walk from my Independent Living apartment every day. My apartment home is comfortable, I have nice view, and love maintenance free living. I meet with a group of 8-10 residents in the Stonewall Cafe every morning for coffee and breakfast. Knowing that I have friends that are waiting for me every morning is a reason to get up and going with my day. The staff is fantastic, friendly, and responsive. It amazes me that they know every resident by name. The programs are very robust and can be appealing to almost anyone. Better yet, if someone if interested in something that is not offered, our LivWell team works to get it integrated into our calendar. I would highly recommend making the choice to move to Winchester Gardens for yourself or a family member. I wish I had done it sooner!

It’s 8 months since we relocated to Winchester Gardens. Our current lifestyle reinforces the wisdom of our decision! Downsizing was made much easier by following Brooke’s advice to employ a move management company. We were advised how to proceed with the tremendous task of choosing what to take, purchasing some new furniture, and donating or selling what our family chose not to take. Our WG apartment was renovated. The move managers packed, unpacked and arranged our belongings. We slept in our own bed that evening. We are now enjoying the freedom and easy life style of WG. We have time to participate in many enjoyable activities. We dine with interesting people and have the opportunity to make new friends daily.

One of the best decisions my husband I ever made was to move to Winchester Gardens. We love our villa with it’s ample closets and storage, generous sized kitchen, lots of windows and the gas fireplace if very cozy on chilly evenings. My parents moved to Winchester Gardens in May 2024 to be closer their two grown children and their families in Maplewood. Prior to their move, we visited in November 2023, and it was hard not to be captivated by the original buildings by renowned classicist John Russell Pope. They evoke the past with their historic traditional details for elegant living, yet have been maintained and updated for today's needs. The Great Hall and adjacent gathering spaces are now the setting for parties to TED talks to yoga and more. The spacious grounds with established landscaping add to the bucolic feel. The attention to detail in maintaining the buildings, grounds and common spaces is quite remarkable. It is sophisticated, without being stuffy. The staff is very committed to helping new residents in their transition to the Winchester Gardens community. They work to foster new friendships immediately between existing and new residents. My brothers and I were incredibly grateful for the "soft landing" they provided when my parents moved in. My parents chose to live in the Villas which provide more space and amenities like attached garages. The front doors and porches face a common green. Neighbors enjoy walking their dogs and catching up with friends sitting outside with the morning coffee and paper. We've been impressed by the sense of community, as well as the distinguished, and diverse backgrounds of the residents drawn to Winchester Gardens. When coupled with the maintenance free living and the helpful staff, this really couldn't have been a better choice for my parents to embark on this chapter of their lives.

My mom (an elderly retired nurse) stayed at Winchester Garden for about a month in early 2024 for rehab following cardiac surgery. We were all very impressed by, and grateful for, Winchester's wonderful care of her as they shepharded her through recovery and ultimately a succesful discharge. The staff was kind and mostly quite attentive, the food very good, and the care by and large superb. The leadership was also particularly attentive, from admission including personalized tours (thank you Dave, and also Ali!) and working directly with us to ensure a smooth intake (thank you Shelli, and also Kayla!) to during her stay checking in with us, and eventually to a smooth discharge. Physical and Occupational Therapy was also effective and well done. Nursing care was good as well. Thank you so much WInchester Gardens!

Our journey to Winchester Gardens began a few years ago when my mother and stepfather started exploring options in their area. They took their time, considering all the viable choices carefully. From the beginning, Winchester Gardens stood out as a clear frontrunner, and earlier this year, my mother decided to make it her new home. In just a few months, she’s come to feel that Winchester Gardens truly is her home. She is settled and genuinely happy. When considering where to live, my mother weighed several factors equally: the physical environment, the location within the community, and the warmth of the residents and staff. From the start, she was captivated by Winchester Gardens itself—a beautifully preserved historic building, thoughtfully constructed and well-maintained. The lush, well-tended grounds offer space for peaceful walks, while inside, attention to detail is evident everywhere. The interiors are always clean, with inviting touches like books placed thoughtfully on tables near garden views, creating a welcoming and home-like atmosphere. It’s clear that management cares deeply about both the place and its residents. Throughout our experience, we were in regular contact with Brooke Imperatore, whose warmth and kindness, combined with her deep knowledge of Winchester Gardens, made a strong impression. Brooke is truly dedicated to ensuring each resident’s experience is as fulfilling as possible. Over time, we’ve come to know many other members of the Winchester Gardens team, and they all share the same calm, considerate approach, ready to address any needs. One aspect that stands out is the care and planning that went into my mother’s transition. There were numerous opportunities for her to learn the ins and outs of the community and meet other residents. What’s more, these opportunities weren’t simply offered; Brooke and her team made a personal effort to invite and encourage my mother at every step. Their support wasn’t about following protocol but about making sure she felt comfortable and connected. Finally, being in Maplewood is a wonderful benefit. Maplewood is a warm, vibrant town with a unique charm, offering amenities like a classic downtown filled with great dining options and a fantastic bookstore. Being part of this lively community has added a special layer to my mother’s experience, making Winchester Gardens feel all the more like home.

What is Life? WG is a sanctuary! Acording to Maslow’s hierarchy, life can be understood in two tiers: the basics—food, shelter, transportation—and a higher tier that fulfills one’s purpose and desires. Having resided in Winchester Gardens for over a year, I feel deeply fulfilled and connected. The community here brings a meaningful friendship and intellectual camaraderie that enriches life in ways I hadn’t anticipated. I consider myself a “learned ignoramus” and find perpetual learning, exploring, and sharing to be my greatest passions. The environment here supports this beautifully: accomplished poets have encouraged me to break free from traditional forms, and thought-provoking discussion groups open us all to fresh perspectives. My wife and I even had the pleasure of organizing the Valentine’s Day party, teaching line dances that brought laughter and joy to all. Music abounds, from operas and American classics to Chopin and Bach, with weekly concert performances lifting our spirits. Trips to restaurants, gardens, Tanglewood, etc. whet our cultural palates. The grounds of Winchester Gardens add to the charm—flower gardens, a dog park, chirping birds, and quaint villas that blend natural beauty with history. It’s a tranquil haven where body, mind, and spirit are continually nurtured. exercise classes, aqua aerobics, art classes, and meditation sessions create a balanced lifestyle that enhances well-being and joy. The healthcare and support services here provide peace of mind. Knowing we have access to assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing, all within this community, brings an ease that’s priceless. Winchester Gardens is more than a place to live; it’s a sanctuary for the soul, where life’s purpose grows clearer each day. My mom, a retired 82 year physician, is currently residing in Independent Living at Crane’s Mill, and we investigated WG for a potential transfer, but we were denied since mom suffers from moderate dementia. I’m compelled to write this since if you are considering Independent Living at WG for a loved one who may have cognitive decline, it’s not worth the energy. My first visit, alone, was with Brooke Imperatore and Ayleen Pinto. We had a lovely conversation about mom, and I was upfront about my mom’s cognitive decline after suffering a stroke in 2020. Since Ayleen and I had an in-depth discussion about mom’s cognitive decline and her need for a 24/7 companion, I feel they should have been up front with me instead of scheduling 2 subsequent visits, and requesting 2 years of complete medical records from her cardiologist and neurologist. Mom had her yearly neurology visit a week earlier, and there was noted to be no significant cognitive decline. I took my mom back to see her prospective apartment, which was lovely and is pictured here, and we took a tour with the director of sales. After we left, mom was excited to move, but Brooke then asked for another visit, where I would not be allowed to attend, for mom to be interviewed by the staff nurse and the director of resident services. A day later, my mom and her 24/7 live-in aide were denied entry. The denial was despite medical clearance for Independent Living from mom’s cardiologist. As my mom’s guardian and physician, my goal is to keep her living as independently as possible, near to my home. In my professional opinion, mom is well cared for and definitively happy with her current companion in Independent Living, and any changes would be detrimental to her wellbeing. Mom was upset to have been denied entrance. Now I will state the positives of WG. It is definitely a step up from Crane’s Mill. The facility is newer, immaculate, and vibrant. They have many activities for seniors who want to keep busy, mentally, physically, and spiritually. There is meditation, games, puzzles, arts and crafts, woodworking, entertainment, and much more. The apartment we viewed was a Pinehurst, 2 bedroom, 2 bath, and was bright, and newly renovated. The campus is gated with a guard, and the campus is lovely. If you’re looking for Independent Living with many activities in a clean and vibrant environment, WG is certainly worth the visit. If you’re looking for Independent Living for a loved one with mild-moderate cognitive decline, this may not be what they are looking for in their Independent community. For the last 3 months, my mom has been happily residing in her brand new apartment at the Delaney at the Green. She was the first occupant, and her 2-bedroom is spacious, and lovely with a patio that leads out to a common area of lawn. The residents and administrators at Delaney are beyond kind. They just celebrated their 1 year anniversary, and the facility and amenities all have a “new hotel smell.” If you are in a predicament as I was, looking for friendly, clean, Independent Living, The Delaney in Florham Park, NJ is worth taking a look at. My mother was moved into Winchester Gardens after a trauma caused her to no longer be able to live alone. They dropped everything and were able to accommodate her and move her in at a moment's notice. That was during the end of the pandemic when staff was minimal and life was delicate in most assisted living environments. Within a couple of weeks, the staff was greeting her by name and everyone felt very familiar. As her condition declined, they attended to her every need and even moved her to the Sub Acute care unit (which is on site and incredibly convenient for elderly parents who see a rapid decline in their ability to live independently). We were met with care and concern at every change in her physical abilities and guided carefully through the process at every turn. I encourage anyone who is seeking a care facility to look into Winchester Gardens as an option.

Winchester Gardens has provided me with everything I needed at this point in my life. I moved here 9 months ago, after retiring. The location in Maplewood, NJ was ideal, since my daughters and grandchildren have lived here for many years. My wife has Alzheimer's disease and needed full time care. I needed an apartment where I could live, but still visit her every day without walking outside on a rainy or snowy day. I now have both, and so much more. I have a spacious 2 bedroom apartment, an elevator ride down to a well appointed gym for daily exercise, daily activities that include first class musical performances, stimulating lectures, delicious dinners in the dinning room, daily walks in the park-like beautiful grounds, and easy access to Manhattan via the train in Maplewood. I now have the social life that I had missed for several years. I now have close friends with a wide variety of backgrounds and interests. I am part of a community of friendly and supportive people that includes the residents as well as the professional staff. I am delighted with the care my wife is receiving in memory care, allowing me to enjoy my new life in this picturesque environment. I love my new life. I love Winchester Gardens.

I'm the Power of Attorney for a dear friend of 45 years, who is like a grandmother to my children. We were all delighted when we were able to move her into Assisted Living at Winchester Gardens 2.5 years ago - it's the loveliest we visited and, more importantly, the staff is absolutely wonderful. She very much enjoys the activities that are provided. When we take walks, she's always greeted by everyone by name, with a friendly smile. Recently, it was necessary to move her into the memory care unit. It was very distressing to me...but, with everyone's help, she transitioned seamlessly, and is still delighted to see her friends everyday and participate in activities.

Winchester Gardens is a lovely and lively senior community for independent living or assisted living.There are separate villas on the grounds and varied size apartments in the main buildings. The grounds are beautiful, arrayed with vegetation of many kinds by the Olmsted Bros who designed Central Park. The English Tudor design of the outside and inside offers a homey quality of elegant beauty. The Great Hall with it's grand Steinway piano houses free concerts every week and other activities. Sing-a-longs and many card games abound. There are billiards, ping pong, corn hole, scrabble, trivia, etc. There are several exercise classes of all kinds and a lovely new fitness center arrayed with varied exercise equipment. There are beautiful garden benches and tree-lined walks, making one's aging years enjoyable and comfortable. The residents, in the great majority have higher degrees, and afford conversations that are pleasant and interesting at Happy Hours and dining times. There are four lovely dining rooms and a cafe. The Winter Garden in particular retains is beautiful English Tudor design, as does the grand Great Hall with it's fireplace in winter and its large patio with umbrellas in summer, overlooking a great tree-lined lawn. There is always a cozy gazebo for picnics and a putting course for practicing golf, a dog park and just about anything one could desire.There are nursing facilities as well as a rehabilitation division, where one can recuperate after a hospital stay, and then return to one's own independent living quarters. Health care opportunities are available. We love to welcome new people, though we're nearly full and filling fast. The grounds and architecture are a major attraction and it was The English Tudor style that attracted me. Happy trails to you! Daniela

I am an octogenarian who has lived at Winchester Gardens for two years. This has been a marvelous experience. Within two weeks everyone knew my name. Very early I joined several committees, and later was selected as the chairman of a very active healthcare committee. There are exercise programs, lectures, weekly concerts, all of the highest quality and interest. The grounds are beautiful and the buildings stately, with plenty of exercise programs both inside and outside.I have truly enjoyed being here, and I would recommend that anyone looking for a continuing care retirement community look at Winchester Gardens and consider it seriously.

My father (80 yr.) recently had a stroke. My siblings and I had to find a place for him to recover. Checking other places in the area we were hesitant. Some places were dirty and had a smell of death in the air. Other places, there were a bare minimum of staff. We finally toured Winchester Gardens and I can honestly say this place is like a 5-star hotel with caring and attentive staff. My father has been there for five days now. So far so good.
