I live across the street from The James. There are wonderful residents that stop by on their walks to visit with us. The staff is very kind and receptive to the neighbors around The James. The staff and residents at The James want to be a friendly neighbor and a positive addition to our neighborhood. We really appreciate the kindness and neighborly attitude of The James and all who reside and work there.

The James in Ferndale is a terrible place. Zero Star Rating here's why. My sister died in the facility. The management changed abruptly, leaving our family with no closure. We called the facility and spoke with [name removed], who refused to provide a number for us to contact the leasing department. My sister's place was cleaned out by the family and then deep-cleaned by a professional service. The Keys were returned, and her vehicle was removed. Nothing was left for us to complete. No one called us regarding the return of the security deposit. There is no excuse for tacky service. I would suggest that anyone considering The James in Ferndale WALK AWAY. You can get better service at a homeless shelter. What kind of management is this that fails to communicate with its residents' family members and its staff? Shame Shame Shame on The James in Ferndale.

I am writing this review for Patrick . He has been here for almost 6 years and I can say that his experience has been very good. He likes his room and enjoys going to meals each day. He enjoys the food He uses the gym each week. He enjoys being able to live as best he can independently. The management has been receptive to any concerns we have had. I think we may need some additional support in the future and I like that they have these independent services available so that Patrick will be able to stay in this environment.

I just recently toured The James with a group from Birmingham Next. I have been hosting these housing tours for almost 10 years and have toured over 50 communities. We were all very impressed by this community. it was clean, bright and modernized. We looked at two units and they were spacious and spotlessly clean. The best part about the tour was the very warm and welcoming staff. Kai-Anne gave us the most creative and informative tour and was very knowledgeable. I would not hesitate to recommend The James when people ask me for referrals.

I am searching for a place that meets my expectations and I believe I found my home. The staff is attentive and show great respect to their residents. During my tour, I learned that the services makes it easy to pay one bill all in one. Most charge for every line item, but The James makes it easy to pay one bill to cover it all. My experience here has been pleasant and comfortable. The people that I met are friendly, caring and kind. I loved my window view of the greenery garden and the meals are deliciously prepared. My move-in experience with Kai-Anne was very smooth and easy. The services are excellent and I encourage anyone searching for themselves to visit.

Extremely clean and very contemporary building, with extremely attentive and friendly staff. Executive Director, Kizzy Parks and, Senior Leasing Agent, Kai-Anne Radcliffe made the entire leasing and move in process seamless and professional. I highly recommend this facility!!

Over priced, over promised and looking for anyway to cut corners. Food quality has consistently diminished over the last year and now they are limiting how many meals are included and have the audacity to call them complementary. No longer serving a hot breakfast, rather putting out a pot of oatmeal and sugary pastries. The management is telling residents that they should be utilizing their full kitchen and cook for themselves. Their management team has been replaced several times and now only cares about the bottom line and not their residences. This all happened within 60 days of a rent increase. We have asked a number of times to speak to the people who make the decisions. We have been told that they will “absolutely call you back and address your concerns” but no one has called us back. They charge a premium to rent there and it is not worth it anymore. You would be better off moving your parents to an American House because that is same quality that The James is now. I would look elsewhere for your loved ones if you care about the quality of their lives. One final note- if the residents knew how to leave reviews, there would be dozens more of them. I speak for all of the residents with this review. If you decide to look at this place, take the time to speak to the residents. They will confirm everything I’ve said and more.

The James is an old schoolhouse converted into a senior apartment complex. When I first moved in all meals were included in the price. Now, we do not get hot breakfasts, but cold self-serve continental breakfast. The number of meals drops down to 20 meals included in your package. The remaining meals you have to pay additional. All meals now are served on cheap plastic, with plastic silverware, definitely not luxury. I read the other reviews and the Management team with Sarah, is no longer here. The limited staff and residents are all very welcoming but we do not have a Managment team at this time.

While looking for a more upscale resort style independent living for my mom, I had heard many good things about The James. Upon meeting with Stana and Sarah my mom was immediately welcomed and supported. The leasing process could not have been easier and the communication is great. My wife Jo Ann and I had a great experience at The James. Sarah, the Executive Director, really helped us a lot in selecting the right apartment through her great Marketing Director, Stana, and we very much enjoyed the apartment! It had great features such as a full size, updated kitchen and very large windows. We were allowed to add custom features like an automatic door opener and extra bath cabinets. The food was very good, restaurant quality and we enjoyed the convenience of the free laundry rooms on each floor. It was a terrific experience!

i am a healthcare worker and have worked in multiple senior living facility and i have to admit that this place is one of the best place for your loved one. What makes any place great is the care and self respect an individual is given when he old and can no longer care for himself or herself. This place respect an individual dignity and does not discriminate with any caste creed or color. The manager , marketer and everyone who works here has only one goals " to make your loved one comfortable and welcome" i have been going to this place on and off from last 3-4 yrs and all i can say is that if i had a loved one who needed care i would send them here. The food and housekeeping is excellent and you will not find this place smelling like other places . Hygiene and sanitization is top notch The place is almost full now and the resident population is fantastic . I would love to be living here one day

I’m looking for a place for my Mom and I love this place! I saw the people who work there interacting with the tenants and it was wonderful. The apartments are nice sized and you can put your loved one’s furniture in their room. It has a nice sized refrigerator and stove if they want to cook their own food. There is also a memory care wing where they are well taken care of and lots of daily activities. I also love the transportation service offered as part of the monthly rent. Love, love, love this place!

We were looking for a place for my dad because his current Place have lost a lot of their amenities, so someone told us about the James in Ferndale. We had a tour with Sara and Stana and they were so sweet and so personable during the complete tour as well as accommodating because my dad uses a walker. The place is absolutely adorable and the community is so sweet and inviting. My father fell in love and moved in immediately. If you are looking for a community that treats you like family, this is your place because it's amazing and not to mention near alot of shops. Sara and Stana, thank you for everything that you do.

Before my mom passed, I was looking for a senior community to place her in. The James staff was wonderful and went above and beyond their duties to make sure that my mom what's comfortable and had all that she needed. After her passing the staff continue to check on my family. If you're looking for a senior community I would highly recommend the James of Ferndale.

Amazing transformation from what was once a school building. Unique layout of rooms. Contemporary, clean, and bright with high ceilings in all rooms. Nothing like the "stuffy" d©cor you see in many senior facilities. Wonderful staff. Highly recommended!

Assisted my elderly Aunt with her move to The James. Beautiful apartments, excellent meals, outstanding staff, truly caring and helpful. My Aunt was able to stay in Ferndale in the area she knows and is quite happy with her new home.

I took a tour of The James and it is really nice. They have renovated and modernized the entire inside of the building. They will have over 100 living units when the project is completed. Residence can choose a variety of different floor plans; one bedroom, two bedroom, studio, and wheelchair accessible/friendly. They also have lots of amenities, such as a theater room, salon and barber, game rooms, exercise room, on site doctors office, spacious cafeteria area, and laundry room.
