The following is a section of a letter that I wrote to terminate care for my mother who is diagnosed with Alzeheimers. My mother was accepted to the Lighthouse Senior Living at Hopkins Creek (on 1813 Old Eastern Ave, Baltimore MD 21221) into their residential memory care unit. She moved in October 23, 2023. On December 16th, my mother was sent to the ER by way of ambulance alone. I get a phone call that evening that mom was sent to the ER at Franklin Square. During that discussion of trying to figure out why, I was met with multiple people on the other end on a speaker phone. There was no compassion, concern, or understanding; instead I was met with distrust, anger, accusations, some of which are noted below in the letter that I sent. Imagine your mother with Alzeheimers being sent alone in the ER. My sister went to the ER to be with mom. Mom was subsequently moved to Sinai Brain Health unit from FSH. Those weeks between the date my mother was sent to the ER (December 16) until January 22th were a nightmare. We didn’t know if mom had a home to go back to. We had to find a new facility before she was released from Sinai. It was very challenging – adding that it was over the holidays did not help. During those weeks, my calls were not returned. Message after message was left with the Executive Director, Head Nurse, and Manager.at the Lighthouse. I finally found out that she was not welcome to return by a Sinai social worker (who spoke with Lighthouse personnel). I reached out to a woman with WPM Real Estate Management to send my letter and arrange to pick up my mother’s furniture. Lighthouse evidently outsources their management teams. Prior to the night that my mother was forced out of the facility, we learned that this was not a kind, compassionate, understanding place for those with alzheimers. There were no activities to engage those in memory care. The other unit for assisted living did have activities and we were promised that those with memory care would participate during the sales process because that is what it is – a sales process. Anyway, activities participation for the memory care residents rarely happened and then it was for just one or two. The attitude of caregivers was unacceptable. The entire culture of the management team and caregivers was an “us against them” attitude. It’s funny that we were accused of the same (noted below). Any concerns that we raised as a family was met with ‘we are the professionals. We will handle it. Her (mom’s) behavior is all part of the transition. Let us handle it.” They assured us that this was typical behavior and they were on top of it. So my mother entered Lighthouse on October 23rd and was kicked out sent to the ER alone on December 16th, that’s less than two months. It was a very difficult time for us as a family as you can imagine. After this experience, we have been educated: trust your instincts. Ask many questions. And most importantly look at the current residents to see if they are happy. Instead many if not most stood by the door begging to leave. This is not normal. We are fortunate because we found a new place. The section from my letter was to break the lease agreement. It follows: “This letter is to inform you that I am terminating the lease agreement for xxxx xxxx, (herein “my mother”), from the Lighthouse facility effective December 16th the day you discharged my mother to the Emergency Room (ER) with no intention of taking her back. For the following reasons, I am giving a 2 week notice. • Lighthouse’s continued refusal to return calls and of requests for meetings regarding the care of my mother. • First contact with Lighthouse was with Executive Director (ED) was January 4th after many URGENT phone calls were never returned since my mother was sent to the ER weeks earlier. • Lighthouse’s discharge of my mother to ER at Franklin Square Hospital, with refusal of taking her back. • Lighthouse’s failure to provide Sinai brain health (according to Sinai admissions personnel) with the Psychiatric Evaluation required with a referral – disallowing mom access to their facilities. Franklin Square had to supply the evaluation. Again the ED refused to take our urgent calls. • Lighthouse’s refusal to communicate with Sinai (calls were not returned) after her transfer from the ER. • Lighthouse’s unprofessional complaints that family members are “working against us, and not with us” on same phone call to tell me that my mother is being sent to ER. • Lighthouse’s lack of compassion towards my mother’s care, and instead worrying about whether she, an Alzheimer’s patient, was going to call the local TV (WBAL-TV news) station, or whether or not I believed that someone hit my mother. This on the same call that informed me that mom was sent to the ER. [I’m convinced mom’s threats to call the local TV station caused them to send her to the ER.]” Overall, I gave Lighthouse full autonomy over mother’s care, being assured multiple times that you; “we’re the professionals,” had things under control when we raised concerns. I will NEVER do that again.” I am sometimes haunted by those residents still in their memory care unit.

No one wants to have their elderly parents living anywhere but in their family home, yet life happens. I can honestly say it is hard to see my mom living in an assisted living place, yet having her in The Lighthouse Senior place allows me to sleep at night. At least I know she is in a safe clean caring environment.

My sister, a former nurse, has been extremely pleased with her recent placement in this Lighthouse facility. Transfer from rehab to this residency went very smooth. We have to commend Kevin Jones and the other staff members in this regard.

When we had to look for a place to move my mom after she had a fall, Lighthouse Senior Living at Hopkins Creek came to the rescue! From the first contact with them (through A Place For Mom) we felt that this was the place where mom would be safe and would receive the care she needs. We were able to complete the entire move from a rehab center to Lighthouse in 1 week, thanks to the assistance by the staff at Lighthouse! The staff at Lighthouse has been nothing short of amazing. They have shown patience and caring support toward my mom. Whenever we have needed something to be done for her, they have responded quickly and with professionalism. We especially want to thank Ruth Corrado and the Care team at Lighthouse for their help in making my mom feel welcome. We live 2,500 miles away, but feel that my mom is in a safe and supportive environment. We highly recommend Lighthouse Senior Living at Hopkins Creek!

My Family and I are just getting started with Lighthouse. We recently did a tour and spoke about all possible needs and concerns of our loved one. The communication back and forth has been wonderful and most helpful in answering all of our questions and concerns. The Director we met with spent time with us, answered all of our questions, gave helpful suggestions and truly cared about my family. Entering the Facility is comfortable and personable, with the utmost care of sanitation and precautions for our ever changing world. I was happy to be there even in the sections, that have potential to be very sad because the staff gave me the sense of their commitment and compassion for each and every resident.

I received this note from a former residents son. Needed to share what our families really think about the Lighthouse. Mom was at lighthouse for a year and a few months. she went in with every intention of hating it, she was wrong !!! mom had very few complaints, was VERY well cared for, was given lots of attention and love. the staff from top to bottom went out of their way to please her and her family. the place is spotless, always clean and looked after. again, the entire staff was awesome, all the time. My father in law was at Lighthouse and had the best experience. He loved the daily activities that the Activities Coordinator, Ashley, would provide for them. During COVID they took the residents on their bus and just drove them to the Harbor for a change of scenery. My father in law absolutely LOVED the food. He would quite often brag to us about what he had to eat. For us its was very comforting to know that there is management on the property at all times. From the beginning, Ruth assisted us through the process of getting my father in law into Lighthouse, to all the others that made his senior time the best. I would highly recommend Lighthouse as the place to be in your later years in life.

Lighthouse was a great fit for my father. When I was no longer able to take care of him, the staff at Lighthouse did the job for me. He felt at home from the the first day that he entered the doors. The staff were always warm and welcoming to my father and myself who came to visit often.
