Heritage Woods of South Elgin is my home now in this new chapter of my life. It is clean and well cared for and I feel that the amenities they offer suit my needs and allow me to enjoy my life such as nursing care, housekeeping, good food, resident activities and meetings to share resident input.Help is available at the push of a button. Holidays and special days are enjoyable and celebrated. Activities are planned with a monthly calendar, refreshments, and decorated according to the theme and entertainment provided too! I feel my needs are met and enjoy the many friends that I have made.

I really don't like writing reviews right away. I like to get to know a "product" or a "service" as a much as I can and then I still don't write a review unless something is 1. really bad or 2. really good. Just like any of you that may be reading other reviews of Heritage Woods, I read them prior to my mom and dad moving in back in February of 2024. Here are my thoughts. This past week (mid June 2024), my mom was hospitalized for awhile (4 days) thus I spent a lot of time with my dad at Heritage Woods while taking him back and forth from the hospital. As a result, I can honestly say that I got a very good "close up look" at what residents see and the environment they live in. No...this isn't a 5 star, all inclusive Hawaiian resort!!! But...Heritage Woods is an assisted living facility full of people that truly care about the people that they are working for and serving. I was approached by a ton of employees (and residents) that asked me how my mom was doing. This place in many ways seemed more like a large family of caring people than a place where people just go to work (employees) or live (residents). Just like in any business, there are always things that one can complain about and we can find little things that could be better, however, when one zooms out and looks at the "whole picture", this is a place where one can feel taken care of, provided for and loved. If you have read this far into my review, then I would encourage you to read the rest. There are some retirement homes/assisted living facilities that have "hit the news" lately. We have a close family friend who placed their mom into a facility. That facility had a "buy in" situation. While it was a lovely facility, it just went bankrupt and residents were told that they may need to move out (with no refunds). Upon looking into the history of that facility, they had gone bankrupt previously as well. Heritage Woods is not a "buy in" facility. From my research, Heritage Woods seems to be financially stable which gives my family and I a lot of peace. I would strongly encourage you to look into Heritage Woods. Take a tour!!! As one resident told us as we took our tour prior to moving mom and dad in, "Everything that they have been telling you about this place is true!!! This place is wonderful!" Knowing what I know now, I would have to agree!!!

Heritage Woods of South Elgin has been a God-sent to my mom and her family. When faced with the challenge of moving her out of her apartment out of state and into Assisted Living I feared the daunting task. My husband and I had a tour of Heritage Woods with Melissa Balleto. She was wonderful! She was patient and kind and explained everything in detail. She helped us to develop a plan to move Mom in. On move-in day, my Mom was extremely nervous. Once she met Melissa again she was immediately at ease. Melissa was so good with her showing her around the building and her apartment. Mom was so excited to see the wonderful welcome basked that Melissa put together. Melissa even put a bird feeder outside my mom’s frontroom window so she could enjoy that. I’m so pleased that we made the choice to go with Heritage Woods! Everyone has been amazing, but Melissa is shining star!

Well, where do I start? First of all this place is advertised as an "Assisted Living Facility." They even claim to be among the top 5 "Assisted Living" facilities in Illinois?? However when the Head Nurse came to Rehab to "evaluate" my Mom, to be sure she wouldn't be too much of a burden to the Nurses and Staff, she informed mom, my brother and myself that THEY WERE NOT ASSISTED LIVING BUT SUPPORTED LIVING! RN's do not work past 4 or 4:30!!?? Mom had a horrendously fractured wrist and needed "extra" help getting dressed and toileting. We were told they could not help her everyday as they had too many other residents to care for. She also needed IV Antibiotics for 6 weeks and they told us "They don't do that!!" She had to go to Rehab just to get one IV Infusion every day. Secondly, they have these big square boxes as their alert buttons. We were not comfortable with this and my brother asked if there was a necklace alert button she could have. They said it costs $190 to get. He paid the fee and the first time she used the button she was told by the Staff to never use that button unless it is a medical emergency. If that was told to my brother, before he gave them $$ he would not have bought it! Third: Just within the past 2 weeks there were notices all over HW saying to "Please come and view the movie that tells what really happened in the 2020 election." The movie is 2000 Mules, which has been debunked by almost everyone as a Right Wing Propaganda movie, full of falsehoods, saying the election was stolen from #45. It is appalling to know that HW Management allows this to be shown to Seniors with diminished thinking capacity! Mom pays $5800 monthly to live there. $5000 is detailed as "Services" with $751 to rent the room. She was out of her room for over a month and was still charged for "Services" she did not receive! And her laundry was never done while she was away. Mom was told "They cannot enter her room if she is not there!" It seems to me that this was just an excuse not to do her laundry as a Supervisor could have entered with the Aide. This is not to say that there are no good people working there as Mom has told me she has had a "new person" give her assistance and with a smile. And I also have noticed several new Nurses on Staff, but no Nurses after 4:30 p.m. Thank you.

This was a nice home, but it has turned into a real cesspool. Everything is broken and they won’t do repairs, they feed them nothing but fish and chicken. No juice, no ice, staff is lazy and they got to where they talk to the residents any way they want to!! It’s time for the state to do their job and pull a surprise inspection!!

This is a clean and safe home environment and my mother is very happy in her own apartment with all of her personal things around her including her beloved cat. I don't have to worry because I know she will always receive the best care from the exceptional nursing staff and a hands on administrator who shows personal concern for his residents. Also, since I take care of all of my mother's financial affairs, I have to say that the Business office has been a life saver with paper work. They have been an invaluable resource to me and always helped me when I have reached out to them. Thank you Heritage Woods for all that you do. Denise Schramm

Excellent choice for assisted living. Supportive living too - which means if you run out of money and cannot afford the monthly rent on just social security and other monthly income, they help you apply for Medicaid. Most places do not take Medicaid, but Heritage Woods does. Does that mean it is a slum? By no means! The building is clean and modern, the staff are all very friendly, the food is good, and they have enough activities to keep you active, including shuttles to stores etc. Mom had a 1 BR apartment that looked brand new. Maintenance, housekeeping and nursing were all reliable and responsive. I am the POA for my mother, and the staff were helpful in walking me through the paperwork for Heritage Woods and for Medicaid (there was a lot), and reminding me when things were due. One thing to remember: nowhere is going to give the same level of loving care and attention as you would want for your loved one. That also applies when choosing a nursing home. We were very involved and visited Mom a few times a week. She was there 2 years, and we called or met with the director of nursing a few times when things were not what we expected. Each time they did their best to explain how things worked and fixed what they could. If your loved one is not able to advocate for herself, you have to”with hospitals, doctors, assisted living, nursing homes, etc. I’m not connected to this place in any way; I’m just telling you what helped me.

This is a beautiful facility with good caretakers. My mother lived there for over 3 years. However, when they thought it was time for here to go into a nursing home, we did not agree. My mother had a choking episode and they felt she needed special meals that they did not offer. All she needed was to thicken her fluids, and grind meat if she ate it. We thought it was an easy fix. She could thicken her liquids and get her protein from foods other than meat. The decided to do an emergency involuntary discharge on her, 4 days before Easter this year (2015). My family had to move all her stuff out by the Saturday before Easter. We were suppose to have a family meeting. They knew we would present the swallow study done, and expect them to allow her to stay there. They did not want "the liability" if my mother was to choke to death under their roof. So they cancelled the meeting and went the fast route. I should also mention the swallow study was done on Feb 23, 2015, and the results available that week. If this was such an emergency and she was in such "imminent danger" of choking to death why did it take then until April 1, 2015 to come up with the decision to ask her to leave against her will. So do I have some anger. You bet! I love my mom. I have spent years protecting her from people you take advantage of her. I just want to warn you that if your loved one is going here, be prepared for harsh and uncaring treatment once they decide they should leave.
