5 BIG stars to Bickford. I dreaded the day I had to put my mom in assisted living. She is 89 and has lived on her own since m dad passed in 2020. She had her daily routine and didn’t want to change a thing. Only thing she needed was a little bit more socializing. Well, that she has now. From the moment she wakes up to when she goes back to sleep, she has something to do. If she doesn’t want to participate, her room is very comfortable. Couldn’t be happier with everyone at Bickford.

We’ve had a wonderful experience with Bickford of Gurnee. The team is caring, attentive, and truly goes above and beyond every day. Their empathy and compassion make a real difference, and it is clear they genuinely care about the residents and their families. I especially want to recognize Savannah, the family advocate, for being so kind, supportive, and easy to work with. She has been incredibly helpful and consistently shows such warmth and understanding. It’s rare to find a team that provides such good care while also making families feel heard and supported. We are very grateful for everyone at Bickford of Gurnee.

The Bickford Gurnee has come very far in the last year! The improvements in the kitchen- their new kitchen manager/cook Carlos has made sure every meal is delicious and the dining room is enjoyable- even has music playing. The activities have amped up as well, weekly trips and visitors thanks to mallory. The new director Christine is really knowledgable and helpful. Alonda is happy to help and stays on top of all the nurses and caregivers to make sure all of the residents are happy and taken care of. The new sales girl Savannah is so friendly and upbeat and spreads positivity within the whole branch. Miguel and rodney keeping up with the grounds and any issues that come up. It is really great. My grandma has lived there for 3 years and it has had ups and downs, they are continuously working to approve. Our family is not perfect but this place really is a home.

My brother moved to Bickford of Gurnee. He's in their assisted living section, and he's a level one. He loves his community, and I love the community, so we're very happy. The price was also right. I was invited to have all three meals with him if I wished. They also have activities all through the day and outings. It's clean and always smells nice. The staff, no matter what their job is, whether they're from the janitor department or the kitchen or the nurse or the administrator, every single person is always very kind and smiles. He said that everybody's so nice there. Those were our deciding factors. We love his apartment. He took the studio because that's really all he needs, and we filled it up and made it nice. I had gone to Walmart and bought him a television and a wall mount so he could have a TV in his room. When I went to deliver it, they had an extra television, so they gave him their television. They're just so nice there, so our hearts are warm and very happy. They have a beauty salon there and a hairdresser comes in every other week, which is really wonderful. He has his laundry day when they come in and strip his bed and take his dirty clothes, and do the laundry. The bathroom is big, and it's really nice, too. It's nice because it's a big square, so when we go there, we do laps. Around every corner, there's a nook and a cranny where there's a television and a couch, so I can just sit with him, or we can sit with a lot of people. The facility was built for Mrs. Bickford, and I think she was a musician, so they have one section with music and puzzles where you can just sit down and listen to music. It's just really nice. They even let me bring my pets in. They have two parakeets that live there, and I have dogs and birds, so when I bring my animals, they're very welcome. I can go visit 24 hours a day, and we really like that too. For instance, he's having a bad night, they said I got my fob so I could just come over and be with him. I thought that was great. The food is really good, and I like what they do. They have a nice, normal breakfast where you can order what you want, whether you want scrambled eggs or French toast. Then they have a big lunch, which is delicious. I like Wednesdays because they do Swedish meatballs, and they're so good. The dinner is light, which I think is really good, too, because no one wants to walk around or get into bed overeating. Dinner starts with a salad, and then there's always soup. Then there's chicken and a vegetable. They don't miss anything, so it's really good. Every dinner comes with dessert. Last time we had German chocolate cake, and sometimes it's an ice cream sundae. They also keep food out. They have a little section of that, if you wake up in the middle of the night and you're hungry. They have either cupcakes or brownies, and they also have fruit at their little bistro. If you get up in the middle of the night and you want to come out of your room and get a snack, they have one. My brother also has a refrigerator in his apartment so he can keep snacks in there. They have a nice big porch and patio in the back, and the activities are good. This month they're having two outings. When we first went there, my brother didn't want to do any of this stuff, but this place has really helped him to get back to his old self, and we're very happy. They keep the memory care people on a separate side of the building, except when they've had a tornado warning, when memory care and assisted living come together in a private safe hallway. My brother knew exactly where to go, and everybody was there, and they're all so nice to each other. It's an upbeat and happy place. I don't know what goes on in memory care, but in assisted living, nobody is whining and crying. They worked with us on the price. We had to pay the community fee, and they gave us half of that back, so I think that they're very fair. Of course, they have add-ons if your person can't take their medication or can't do things, but my brother showers in the morning and fixes himself up. He is so happy

I had the pleasure to tour The Bickford of Gurnee with Savannah and learned about how wonderful the care and living is for the residents. I operate a Home care company down the street and am super excited to be able to point families in her direction because I know this is an excellent community after seeing it first hand. If you are looking for assisted living options for the family have a chat with savannah and see for yourself!

Deciding to move a loved one from independent to assisted living is not an easy journey. Especially when up against an end-of-lease situation. Abby made things happen quickly (which we know is not the norm) and the entire team at Bickford showed compassion, respect, and caring “ both to our father and to us as we made the transition. The approach that Bickford is their resident’s HOME rings true in all that they do. Abby asked about dad’s likes, dislikes, favorite foods, etc. All the little things that matter when making a person feel comfortable and safe. Dad is very content there, and most importantly safe and well cared for.

Great, clean facility, with staff that cares. Being one floor is a plus as you always see residents out and about, often doing puzzles in the puzzle corner, or playing games together. I have been in a lot of assisted livings and you will see how the residents are out and about in the mornings in the courtyard! I also love that the memory care wing has its own courtyard with plants, and residents aren’t just alone in their rooms all day (and are almost always together). Definitely worth a tour!

Abby is truly amazing! She goes above and beyond to answer the same questions many times to help my family understand. She makes everyone feel welcome and special and I just can’t say enough words about her! The facility is very clean and all the staff seems super friendly! The enclosed courtyard is BEAUTIFUL and safe, which I love. They make the residents feel it is their home and not a facility. The restaurantis cute and makes them feel it is a family dining experience. The residents can either eat there or have food brought to their room, and they have many food choices. There are many common areas to watch tv, do a puzzle, etc. They also have a church service option onsite WHICH WE LOVE. Bickford is so accommodating and I have loved every time we have went in there. Again, shout out to Abby and Miss Shirley!

Not having toured other facilities to compare with, I'm leaving 4 stars. But it's probably really 5! Bickford and everything it offers have been wonderful with my father. He is happy here, and I can tell because he calls me and tells me everything multiple times a day! Abby and Shirley are very caring and helpful, always answering my texts and phone calls. Abby even sends me photos of my dad when they have activities/events. This place fell into our lap at exactly the right time and I couldn't ask for a more caring and compassionate staff. Thanks for being there for my dad!

I cannot say enough about the warm feeling you get when entering Bickford of Gurnee. We have been looking for the perfect home away from home for my mom and we can't wait for her to move in next week. From the very first phone call, to my first visit and everything in between, my anxiety has been put at ease. Abby is amazing and truly treats you like a family member, answering questions and caring not just for the individual moving in but also the entire family unit. Thank you Abby and we cannot wait to meet more of the Bickford family.

We moved our Mother into the Bickford just over a week ago, and it this 1st week is any indication of how her life will be moving forward, we are thrilled. Our Mom is happy, and joining in activities we never thought she would! She was even doing ceramics and our Mom is not a crafter. lol We are so happy we found the Bickford, because we were planning to move our Mom to a different facility, but over time, we felt as though they would be treating our Mom like a patient instead of a person. From the 1st consultation with Abby, (who is so caring), we knew had found the right place for our Mother. Abby said that she would have her own apartment, and a sense of community with the activities and other residents. Move in day, it was very emotional for our Mom, being that she was leaving her home of over 60 years. When we arrived, she was teary eyed, and scared. Within seconds some of the staff members, and Abby approached her with hugs and words of encouragement. It was truly like out of a movie set "cue the staff", but their care and compassion was truly genuine and put Mom at ease. Within minutes she was smiling, you could see the relief in her face. The facility is clean, bright and beautifully decorated. The apartments are spacious. Miguel made sure the move went smoothly and quickly for our movers. He showed the movers the best place to park and loaned us his fob for easy access. Once we had all her belongings in place, Joe, came to set up her TV and showed her how to use the remote. Everyone is so kind and caring. After only being there for a few days, our Mom said she liked it and had friends!!! On one visit, we were able to meet some of her friends, and you would have thought they had been life-long friends, as they laughed and teased with one another. The sense of community is outstanding. While our Mom is a people person, the fact that our Mom can, also, have her own space and live independently is exactly what she needed/wanted. The food is plentiful, while being appropriately portioned. Mom says it's very good and is worried about gaining weight because of all the desserts:) All this being said, my siblings and I feel a huge sense of relief that our Mom's needs are being taken care of in a warm and compassionate way. We definitely feel like we made the right decision choosing Bickford for our Mom. If you are considering moving your loved on here, we highly recommend it.

We moved our Mom into the Bickford, just over a week ago, and if this 1st week is any indication of what our Mom's life will be like there, we are THRILLED! She is happy, upbeat, and having so much fun! She is doing all kinds of activities, even crafts! Our Mom is not a crafter! LOL! Originally, we were going to place our Mom in another facility, but as time went on, we felt like our Mom was being treated as a patient, not a person. So we put a halted the move for several weeks. When we discovered the Bickford, we knew instantly that this was the place our Mom deserved. From the 1st consultation with Abby, we knew our Mother would be treated not only like a human being, but a family member! We love that they consider the residence our Mom's home, not a place that takes care of "old people"! The staff is very caring, the day we moved in our Mom, was tough for her! Leaving her home of over 60 years, was traumatic & the emotions were heart-rendering, to say the least. Upon entering that day, she was very teary eyed and scared! Immediately, the staff was there to greet her with hugs and encouragement! It was almost like in a movie, "cue the staff", but the caring and compassion shown her was completely genuine! She was put at ease and I know she felt seen and heard! The facility is super clean, and apartments, are spacious! The day we moved her belongings, the staff, specifically, Miguel, help to ensure the process was quick and efficient! He allowed us to use his fob to let the movers in and out until everything was completed. Once we had the personal effects in, Joe, set up her TV and showed her how to work the new remote! It was a great day! Additionally, the other residents took our Mom under their wings. I was there the other day, and you would have thought her dinner companions and she were life-long friends! The sense of community is just what our Mom needs. She's a people person and likes to have fun! She, also, enjoys the sense of independence! She can be around people if she wants, or retreat to her personal space. It's the perfect balance. My siblings and I were shocked when our Mom said she liked it after only a couple of days there, & especially after all the time it took to convince her to move! Mom's only complaint, is that sometimes it takes long for her meals to arrive, but our Mom has never had the patience of Job! LOL! That being said, the food is well portioned, plentiful and delicious. We cannot say enough good things about the Bickford! If you are considering moving your loved one here, DO NOT HESITATE, they will love it and have all the things they need to flourish! Feel free to reach out to Abby for my #, I am happy to speak with you about our experience thus far! Thank you Bickford Family, we feel such a sense of relief that Mom is safe, cared for and loved!

Bickford is a very caring and nurturing facility! They really excel in making it feel like home- for the residents and even for their family. My Mom and daughter had a tradition of baking Date Nut bread for the Holidays they just weren’t sure how they were going to do it this year or if it could be possible. My daughter thought they would just mix it up and take it home to bake .. but Bickford went out of their way - had it baking right in their kitchen! My Mom was SO proud! You couldn’t get a better Family Advocate than Abby T! She rocks in every way!!

I am very pleased with Bickford of Gurnee. My father has dementia and we had been having a very difficult time finding a place for him. He started to wander but he really wouldn't be happy in the typical lockdown memory care facility. Enter Bickford. They have the ability to keep him safe from wondering, as they have locked assisted living. The best part, they know how to deal with dementia patients without medicating them. We had a rocky start with miscommunication, but once we were able to iron out the issues, both mine and theirs, we are all very happy.

My mother has been at Bickford for 6 months now. Her only regret is that she didn't come here earlier. I interviewed and toured several other places, and didn't find any to be as nice as Bickford. It's smaller, 1 floor, and more like a home environment. Everyone here is very friendly, and caring. Always willing to help no matter what. They also have art classes, bingo and a beauty parlor, and much more. Even a visit from ELVIS! I knew he wasn't really gone! Bickford was a great find!

The cozy and warm feeling you encounter when you enter this "home away from home," is truly ingratiating. Having a husband in Assisted Living/ Memory Care is a difficult decision, but Bickford was a big relief. After a couple of weeks, it was apparent this was an exceptional place, with lovely & caring staff who know each resident and their unique personality. It is impressive that the staff works at having a relationship with each resident. The food is fresh and my husband loves the desserts! I am so glad he made the move - safe, clean and king in his palace!

Our parents just moved in to Bickford and we are so pleased and happy with everything! All of the staff members and nurses are so kind and helpful. They really take care of our parents and treat them with respect. We can also count on Abby to be there for all of our questions she always responds back to our calls or texts. She’s been a huge help and we can see how much she loves her job and taking care of everyone. Thanks to EVERYONE at Bickford

Bickford Senior Living Gurnee continues to be an excellent choice and home for our mom. At 97, she’s provided the care and support needed to continue living semi-independently which is just what she wanted. Our family was able to furnish her apartment with items from her home, bringing familiarity and comfort to mom. The management team and staff have been great to work with, (thanks Tim and Abby) providing friendly, kind, and caring support each day. Frequent activities and interactions with other residents plus tasty well-prepared meals really helps keep mom’s spirits up. (Btw, we’ve been welcomed to join mom for lunch when we visit). After exploring numerous facilities in Lake County prior to selecting, it’s clear Bickford was the right choice for mom. It was also the right choice for US her family as well. The facility is warm, inviting, and quiet enough to relax and enjoy our visits. And we’re able to visit as often as we like.

From the time we walked in it felt homey. We met with Abby she is wonderful and will do anything to help thru these challenging times. Every time we reach out she is there for us. The staff is awesome we have met almost every single person. I had always heard so many scary stories about assisted living I was scared just to even go see one. Well it's not true at least Bickford of Gurnee. I have a fob to go whenever we want and I have been there in the morning, night, weekends and every time I go I find the staff attending to the residents . Thank you Bickford for everything you do for our loved ones.

I been looking around for placement for grandma to enjoy the rest of the time she has, I recently came across Bickford of gurnee! I would like to thank Mrs Vitacco for taking time out and answering all my questions and reassuring me that everything will be just fine.

My grandmother is a resident here, and the only reason I gave 2 stars instead of 1 is because of the amazing CNA’s here. While Bickford is a gorgeous facility and I cannot say enough wonderful things about the CNA’s, something absolutely needs to change with leadership/management here. The turnover of staff is so high that the CNA’s are expected to perform not only their job description, but also pick up the slack from being so understaffed that they’re expected to cook in the kitchen, clean the cafeteria/eating area and do residents laundry. My Aunt takes all of my grandma’s clothes with her weekly and washes them at home to alleviate some of the stress on the CNA’s and because we can’t trust that it’s going to get done. Not to mention their washers are often broken for extended periods of time. We have seen so many good CNAs and cooks come and go because of the amount of work that’s required of them. It’s especially difficult for the residents that have memory loss because they will finally get used to a staff member only for them to resign a short while later. It’s a total revolving door and it stresses the residents and their family members out. Understaffing has also lead to multiple residents walking right out the front door without notice, which is very scary for being on busy a busy intersection of Hunt Club and Gages Road. When family members sat down with management (including the District Manager) to voice concerns and ask what was going to be done, family members were given typical corporate blanket statements with no real sense of urgency or care. It comes off as though all they care about is the money and cutting expenses (staff) to increase their profit, even if it’s at the expense of their residents. For what we pay monthly at Bickford (which is a VERY pretty penny), we will be looking for another establishment for my grandmother if management doesn’t make changes soon. This area has plenty of nice assisted living facilities to choose from and we’d gladly give our money to one who cares more about the wellbeing and care of not only their residents, but their staff as well, rather than greed. Bickford has huge potential to be run the right way and be a wonderful facility for residents, but even the nicest facility with beautiful esthetics can’t outweigh or hide the real issues that are happening.

Denise Meyer

First let me say that the workers and CNA,s are very good at Bickford. So this is not any reflection on them. They are very understaffed and it has been a revolving door. They expect them to serve food, clean up after and cook and clean the kitchen. Ridiculous. There is no one at the front door and server all residents have gotten out. When brought to corporates attention, you get a canned response. Everyone passes the buck. This is a small facility that could be run so well if it wasn’t all about the money. There are plenty of places to pick from in the area. If they don’t get this resolved very quickly I will be moving our loved one.
