I was concerned because my movers came early, and my move-in time was 10 am. When I arrived at the Breakers, the staff was very accommodating, ensuring my movers could get me moving a few minutes earlier than my scheduled time.

I knew it was going to be a good move when I sold my house the day it went on the market. I used Dawson Relocation services for help with downsizing, packing and unpacking. They were wonderful. Bradtke Movers had the truck loaded in 2 hours and unloaded in about 1.5 hours. By the end of the day, I only had 6 boxes to unpack. The staff at The Breakers were exceptional. Kristin Milton worked very hard to make sure the apartment was ready for me with the requested modifications. She was quite attentive to my every need. Penny Cato checked in frequently on moving day to make sure all was going well and has followed up on requests. The maintenance guys came on a Sunday(!) to fix some problems. The staff at the Concierge Desk have been very helpful in answering my questions and are quite friendly. I could not be more pleased with my move to The Breakers.

The staff at The Breakers went far beyond ordinary parameters I would have expected in helping me solve a problem I had related to making my recent move. I will not soon forget the compassion, empathy and patience they expended in helping me to implement some details which were physically and mentally very difficult at this time for me to have resolved on my own. I am more then pleased with my decision to move to this community.

Went to visit a friend and bring her medication. A large amount of residents all have covid. Why are the staff and residents not wearing mask???? This is disgusting!!!! The elevators were dirty. OMG this place has gone downhill! The staff were very rude. Anyone can just walk in off the street and go up on an elevator. This is NOT a SAFE place anymore!

I hardly know where to begin to describe how absolutely WONDERFUL it is being at the Breakers at Edgewater Beach. Kristin, the Sales Director, arranged a short-term stay for me. When I entered the apt. on the 26th floor for the first time I was awestruck by the view of Lake Michigan and Navy Pier. The one bedroom suite is completely furnished with everything needed for a temporary resident, even including a folding grocery cart for quick trips to Mariano's for lunch or snack foods, less than 2 blocks away. The location of the building itself is fantastic, near the lakefront walking trails and with express bus service to Chicago outside the front door. By the way, Kristin is meticulous in attending to every detail and really listens to a prospective resident's needs and concerns. She sets the upbeat, enthusiastic tone of the Breakers from the very first interaction and is truly a delightful promoter of living a good life at The Breakers. Breakfast and dinner are included for residents at the Breakers and I would describe the food as truly delicious. Homemade soups, prepared by a chef who's been on staff for more than 25 years, are outstanding, including tomato basil and split pea. Desserts are homemade and always a treat. The dinner menu includes a choice of two soups, two salads, three different entrees, three sides; and, an extensive alternative menu includes entree salads, sandwiches and great crispy french fries. Crab cakes, salmon croquettes and beef stroganoff are among entrees I've enjoyed that are truly restaurant quality. Servers in the dining room are courteous and friendly. Although not a permanent resident, Vicki, a server at the breakfast buffet, greeted me by name the second morning of my stay, as she did nearly every resident. And, I noticed that she remembered many of their preferences for breakfast. I understand that she is another staff member of more than 25 years. It is worth mentioning the atrium dining room, a bright, spacious setting for meals which overlooks a beautiful park. Busy preparing to move to a condo 8 blocks north of the Breakers, I have not had the opportunity to participate in the extensive array of activities offered; but, there are plenty of every variety to appeal to almost anyone. Molly, the Activities Director is a dynamo and genuinely passionate about everyone at the Breakers being engaged in something that interests them. She is initiating a new photography group based on a suggestion by a new resident. There are musical concerts, daily movies and outings to special events, which include bus transportation. Overall, though, the best part of being at the Breakers is the atmosphere created by the residents and staff. The mood is genuinely positive and upbeat. Residents greet one another on the elevators and often share plans for the day. I was acknowledged by many residents as being "new" to the community and was invited to join others at a breakfast table or an event that they suggested. Both my parents had Alzheimer's, consecutively, and I helped a more senior friend navigate a transition to assisted living. I have seen many, many senior residence settings over many years, both in Illinois and out-of-state, including several "chains", such as Sunrise, Brookdale, Atria and Genesis.; as well as others including The Admiral and The Merion. There are differences between many of these; some having assisted living, others offering differing levels of care, while The Breakers is an independent living senior residence. Among all the senior residences I've seen, the Breakers seems far superior in every way. At whatever point I should decide that such a setting is right for me I wouldn't even consider another option. In my opinion, the Breakers is simply outstanding; truly the best.

While the Breakers at Edgewater Beach is positioned beautifully among the transportation options that connect one to the rest of Chicago, its aging physical plant have begun to catch up with it. And this adds to the general problems facing all retirement communities, and, indeed, all institutions involved with serving meals post-pandemic: a paucity of servers and staff. The latter are, almost without exception, kind and helpful, if overworked.Management has vowed to address these issues as quickly and as economically as possible, but the jury is still out,

We chose the Breakers for my Mom after my sister in law's Dad had a great experience living here. Our Mom is extremely happy in her cute, lakefront-view apartment. She's made new friends, has taken classes, and enjoys the library. She also likes the in-building hair salon, podiatrist, and dentist. Very happy!

The relationship between staff and residents is particularly warm and collegial. The light and airy public areas lift the spirit. The nearness of the lakeshore is wonderful in itself and also gives easy and speedy access to downtown by public transportation or Breakers bus.

The Breakers staff is wonderful and very welcoming. The diversity of the community was the final deciding factor for choosing The Breakers and is what makes this a standout and unique independent living facility. My dad is extremely happy living here after moving to Chicago after 81 years in his hometown of Philadelphia.

My mom recently sold her long-time home in New York and moved into a small apartment at The Breakers at Edgewater Beach to be closer to me in Chicago. Long story short, her realtor convinced her to hire a certain moving company that turned out to be a disaster. I'll refer to them as the movers from hell. The Breakers is a senior community located within a high rise building on the Chicago lakefront. There are people moving in and out of the building frequently. Elevators need to be reserved in advance during designated times (either 10am-2pm or 6pm-10pm) that do not interfere with the residents' dining room schedule. Unfortunately the movers from hell were incapable of sticking to the promised delivery dates of her belongings. From day one there was complete chaos. After several days of delays they finally told us they would arrive in Chicago on December 17th. I worked closely with George Vosnos, a move-in coordinator at The Breakers to try to schedule mom's move into the building. The 10am-2pm time slot for that day was already booked, and the mover from hell was unwilling to work the evening time slot. But George came to the rescue! He contacted the movers who had reserved the morning time slot and learned that they really only needed the elevator from noon to 2pm so that freed up the first half of that time slot for my mom's movers. Thankfully they showed up on time (shocker!) and George supervised the move to make sure they unloaded and left the loading dock on time for the next move to begin. George was also very helpful in delivering a very heavy storage cabinet I had ordered online to my mom's apartment. There was no way either she or I could have managed it. Thanks again, George If you or your parents are moving into The Breakers you will receive great customer service from George Vosnos.

My mother and Uncle both had units there, and stayed there for years. While overall, Id say I liked the place, they had many irritating problems. For instance, the elevators kept breaking down. They have 6 of them, but when one or two are out of order, it takes forever for the little old ladies to get down stairs for a meal. The stairs arent an option when you use a walker. Also, the rent was very expensive. Several years ago, it cost us around $2,000 a month for Moms unit. Of course, that included most of her meals.

We attended a bridal shower in the rec room. It was very nice, as was the view. The service and food were great. The parking garage, however, presented a problem. We had a validation ticket, followed instructions, and the gate would not open. We called for assistance, to no avail. Finally , after about 8 minutes of waiting, and several cars waiting behind us, the gate went up. The parking is, apparently, owned by a company other than the Breakers. They might consider improvements.. .

Francophone Bilingual Toastmasters has been holding its meetings at the Breakers for nearly five years. During this time the service has been incredible. All of the staff at the Breakers is courteous and goes out of the way to accommodate our club. We have been holding dinner meetings in a beautiful room that has a marvelous view of Lake Michigan. The tables are always elegant and the food is delicious. Whenever we request something special the chef will adapt the menu to suit us. In addition the cost is reasonable and the assistance from the Breakers is unbeatable.

Its a beautiful place with a wonderful view of the lake, activity rooms, movie theater, exercise and rehab rooms, and a beautiful dining area. We feel blessed that my mom was able to live and enjoy her last days at the Breakers.
