I have been looking for a place mom for quite awhile and hitting a lot of brick walls. I was very disappointed mostly due to cost, not everyone can afford today’s senior care costs. I got a response to my email from Breaker’s at Edgewater. I was very familiar with the area as I grew up there and went to school there. George contacted me right of way and was very responsive to all my questions, he was very easy to talk to, very laid back a no pressure type guy. He invited me to just come by and take a look at what they have to offer; he explained he wants whoever goes to his building to be happy there and fit in, so they never have to leave. It’s very traumatizing for the elderly to have to relocate. After visiting with him and going for a tour, I was very impressed with everything I saw, from the moment I walked in, I felt my mom would be happy there. It is a beautiful place with many things to offer, from a library, to a gym, movies, pool many activities and even religious services. Two dining floors and parking in the building it’s a very big place. From everything I had already seen, I couldn’t even come close to Breaker’s offerings and it in today’s market I think they have the best game in town. Also, they offer a little extra if needed with medication and or personal assistance. Therapy and medical services are also available to anyone without ever leaving the building. Pull cords are within each unit in multiple places to alert the front desk in case of emergency. Also before a new member moves in, they totally refresh the apartment. Paint the entire unit, change the carpeting, and replace any appliances that may not be functioning properly, even paint or change the baseboard trim around the carpeted areas. I would definitely encourage anyone looking for a very nice affordable place to stop by, and take a look I think it will be worth your time. I’m glad to have gone there and I saw something that is rare to find in today’s world, very sincere people willing to work with you and actually help your family, to get something accomplished. Update: Mom moved in a week ago, and she loves it. Everything went very smooth on moving day. Property Manager Eric, had everything ready to go as expected. We were running a little late and he even gave me a call. He was concerned as it was a very bad snowy weather day. The apartment was as expected an actually better. Many things were replaced that I didn’t expect, and it was really a beautiful job as George promised, very comfortable and cozy. Furniture was not a big issue as this was a studio and it took very little to fill with furniture. She loves the food, the activities, she works out every other day on the treadmill or elliptical or the cycle. Her legs are much stronger now also due to great food. She skipped a lot of meals as she did not like cooking for herself and now enjoys things she never ate before such as salmon. They have excellent chef’s; she loves going down to the dining room and meeting new friends and just socializing not just sitting in a room all day. This was her first Sunday and I received a picture of Sunday Mass she attended. Awesome place I truly sleep better at night not worrying about her safe care.

My mother has been living here for more than 6 months at this point so I figured I’d give an honest review of this place. During the initial visit and move in, the staff was super nice and accommodating which was very appreciated because moving can be very stressful. She was promised half off the second month’s rent. Although her apartment was not ready by the date we were told, they placed her in a studio on site temporarily until it was ready almost 3 weeks later. They moved her into her actual apartment which was also a huge help and probably why I’m giving 2 stars instead of 1. However, they ended up charging her a full months rent the second month and I had to reach out multiple times to get this rectified. They said because of all the variables in her move in, they didn’t think we should get the half off anymore. I wasn’t having that because this was a huge reason we decided for her to move into this place. The place is ok, decent enough apartments. Elevators are HORRIBLE. You’ll end up paying for parking because you had to wait 20+ minutes just to get downstairs. The food is not very good and makes my mom sick sometimes. I’ve even sat with her and had a meal and it’s much like hospital food. They have tried to improve it but they miss the mark regularly and she’s had to take medicine for the stomach issues. My mother has never really had stomach issues in the past with the food she eats so this has been concerning. Today we found out her rent has gone up $100+ more per month. While I understand rent increases everywhere, there needs to be a fair enough improvement to her quality of life here as well. A smaller apartment would only save her $75/month and may not be worth it. Also, food portions are getting smaller but rent is going up. Please make it make sense. I’ve had a few unpleasant conversations with the staff there with them giving snarky comments and attitudes and being a bit fake with me which I don’t appreciate because I’m already not able to be there in person much since I live on a different side of the country. You people are customer service and have the lives of peoples’ loved ones in your hands, please practice a bit more care and consideration when speaking concerned family members. I wouldn’t recommend this place overall to others.

Staff at every level - patient, kind. Many residents, however, impatient, complain. So much to appreciate and consider being blessed if you can manage finances to live here. Could use more maintenance staff, as I've been 5 days without TV service due to a cable in the wall. But in general, this is a gem of a home for seniors.

I knew it was going to be a good move when I sold my house the day it went on the market. I used Dawson Relocation services for help with downsizing, packing and unpacking. They were wonderful. Bradtke Movers had the truck loaded in 2 hours and unloaded in about 1.5 hours. By the end of the day, I only had 6 boxes to unpack. The staff at The Breakers were exceptional. Kristin Milton worked very hard to make sure the apartment was ready for me with the requested modifications. She was quite attentive to my every need. Penny Cato checked in frequently on moving day to make sure all was going well and has followed up on requests. The maintenance guys came on a Sunday(!) to fix some problems. The staff at the Concierge Desk have been very helpful in answering my questions and are quite friendly. I could not be more pleased with my move to The Breakers. Update: I have now lived here for a year and have no regrets. I have met so many interesting people and can't begin to participate in all of the activities offered. The food is tasty with a large number of choices. There are some building issues which are being corrected if possible. The elevators are slow at times. Even though the kitchens are small, I have managed to fix meals for 6 people and bake my usual batches of Christmas cookies. And best of all, I have a 6x6 garden space shown here,

The staff at The Breakers went far beyond ordinary parameters I would have expected in helping me solve a problem I had related to making my recent move. I will not soon forget the compassion, empathy and patience they expended in helping me to implement some details which were physically and mentally very difficult at this time for me to have resolved on my own. I am more then pleased with my decision to move to this community.

Went to visit a friend and bring her medication. A large amount of residents all have covid. Why are the staff and residents not wearing mask???? This is disgusting!!!! The elevators were dirty. OMG this place has gone downhill! The staff were very rude. Anyone can just walk in off the street and go up on an elevator. This is NOT a SAFE place anymore!

The Breakers staff is wonderful and very welcoming. The diversity of the community was the final deciding factor for choosing The Breakers and is what makes this a standout and unique independent living facility. My mom recently sold her long-time home in New York and moved into a small apartment at The Breakers at Edgewater Beach to be closer to me in Chicago. Long story short, her realtor convinced her to hire a certain moving company that turned out to be a disaster. I'll refer to them as the movers from hell. The Breakers is a senior community located within a high rise building on the Chicago lakefront. There are people moving in and out of the building frequently. Elevators need to be reserved in advance during designated times (either 10am-2pm or 6pm-10pm) that do not interfere with the residents' dining room schedule. Unfortunately the movers from hell were incapable of sticking to the promised delivery dates of her belongings. From day one there was complete chaos. After several days of delays they finally told us they would arrive in Chicago on December 17th. I worked closely with George Vosnos, a move-in coordinator at The Breakers to try to schedule mom's move into the building. The 10am-2pm time slot for that day was already booked, and the mover from hell was unwilling to work the evening time slot. But George came to the rescue! He contacted the movers who had reserved the morning time slot and learned that they really only needed the elevator from noon to 2pm so that freed up the first half of that time slot for my mom's movers. Thankfully they showed up on time (shocker!) and George supervised the move to make sure they unloaded and left the loading dock on time for the next move to begin. George was also very helpful in delivering a very heavy storage cabinet I had ordered online to my mom's apartment. There was no way either she or I could have managed it. Thanks again, George If you or your parents are moving into The Breakers you will receive great customer service from George Vosnos.

My move in to the Breakers was a pleasure. It was facilitated by George Vosnos. He was extremely helpful and made the move painless. After all was moved in George came back later to make sure everything was the way I wanted. His help was greatly appreciated.
